Also, if you do mod's it's easier to get more HP out of the WRX engine than the STI engine at the lower cost side (I'm not sure if you had a near unlimited budget if it switches back).

      The stereotype was established in the 90's, back when the Miata had really soft lines and cute little pop-up headlights. A lot of them were originally bought by women. However, as time has gone by, the miata has butched up a little and the older cars have been hit hard by the aftermarket bandwagon. As time has gone by since its introduction, the reputation of the car has changed from cute little toy to 'the embodiment of cheap automotive excellence'.

    I currently own a 16 STI, it's great for me as a daily driver with the winters we get and fun enough. But the most fun car I personally owned was my SR20DET swapped s13. That car was around 2500lbs, had limited slip diff, about 275 whp. It was highly modified and required a lot of attention, but handled so well and always put a smile on my face. I shipped that car to Guam when I was in the military and it eventually got a lot of rust being in the tropical weather surrounded by ocean. That was a decade ago and now I own a house, have a career, and don't have time to be fixing stuff all the time, but it's my dream to get a nice imported jdm one someday.

      Buy a 1991-1994 VW Polo 86c 2F "Steilheck"
      They are very lightweight (Around 750kg) have ton of space in the back and they are really slim, they drive almost like a gokart.
      The most powerful ones are 113hp, but you can put a nice Audi TT engine in there, the 1.8T and push that to over 300hp.
      I have one myself with 54hp and it is a really fun vehicle to drive.

    The STI is only heavy because it's AWD, hatchback (if u get the hatchback version) and has a 2nd-row seat. Although i love hatchbacks because you can fit a lot of stuff and actually have room in the back to fit adults, etc.
    Primary weight contributor is it's AWD system, and the fact that it has 3-locking differentials unlike the WRX, (more moving parts.)
    Btw, i agree that the STI is an improvement over an Acura Integra, unless you're broke and don't wanna pay much in maintenance. But finances aside, i'd still take a STI over any small Honda any day. Except a Honda S2000, which have been discontinued since ~2004.

    I had an MX5 until the weekend, as well as my WRX. It had been lowered and given stiffer springs for even better handling, and is the best car I've ever driven on fast country roads. The problem is that most of my driving is on freeways and fast highways. And the MX5 is pretty hopeless on those. Another consideration is that, as you said, when you're in an MX5 drivers often either don't see you or just flat out decide to bully you; that just doesn't happen when you're in a WRX.

  • @TheBluehornz01
    @TheBluehornz01 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I knew for years that I wanted a WRX. It was truly my dream car. When I was old enough and had enough resources to buy a car, it was on the top of my list of cars to test drive. After testing out the WRX (along with 28 other vehicles), I chose the Fiesta ST. It has less horsepower, but is also much lighter (2720 lbs vs 3455 lbs) and is a LOT more fun to drive in my opinion. I chucked my ego to the curb and got what really felt right. It does everything I need it to in all seasons. One year later & 18K miles I have zero regrets. Good luck with whatever you go with next.

(objective opinion of course.) Able to zip around in traffic while still having decent gas mileage and utility as a daily driver. I've had a few trucks over the years but most recently I picked up a 2 door blazer and the thing is an absolute blast. Highway cruising, traffic, mud, sand, or snow the blazer doesn't care. "Blazes" through it all. Everyone has their own preferences, and after much searching I think I've finally discovered mine. Congrats on discovering yours as well. :)

Only lightweight car i'd consider is an Atom. I'd suggest looking at a RS. That right there is like the STI just kicked up quite a few notches. I have a 2013 WRX Hatch, it's a great all around car. Since they stopped making the WRX hatch, I have no reason to sell it and update. 2015 and up might be a better engine design with the DPI and efficiency, but I just love the sound and personality of the 2.5. It was love at first drive when I got my 2005 Legacy. I hope to get a Porsche Carrera as a second project car but boy are they expensive.

    I've had rear-wheel drive (various types), fast cars (various types), two-seaters (various types), front-wheel cars (various types), part-time AWD (bigger) and full-time AWD cars (various types).
    After decades of driving, I also decided that practicality and enjoyment were most important to me, but found that our fourth Subaru was the key: a nimble (and colourful) XV Crosstrek Limited.
    So, different strokes . . . hope you enjoy your next car. And, the buyer of your 2014 STI is obviously going to be extremely pleased.

      I actually preferred my AP2V2 over my AP1. The engine is noticeably stronger, especially after a tune, and I had it set to 8.5k redline. you don't really miss that extra 500 rpm. But regardless, ANY S2k is perfect. I've owned an '03, '05, '06, '07 and was 100% smiles every time I dropped the top. God, I miss that car.

  • @shaminy1823
    @shaminy1823 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I own a 2011 STI and a 1995 Miata. The STI is somewhat modified but the Miata has a lot of work done to it. The STI is still mostly practical for all of the reasons you listed AND it's fun to drive. The Miata is not practical at all and really not very comfortable with the suspension work that I've done but it's SO much fun that it more than makes up for it. I don't subscribe to the idea of having a "beater" car and a car that you love because, more than likely, you'll more often be driving the "beater" and not get to enjoy yourself. If you spend a lot of time driving, why not enjoy it? Thanks for making such great videos!

      Haha fair enough, that was my mentality for a long time. But the itch to try motorcycles never went away, so I figured screw it. I try to be the smartest I can about it. I started small on a 250 then got what I really wanted after practicing for a year. The risks are very real, but I'd say the vast majority of them are within the rider's control. How much protective gear you wear, what time of day you go, type of roads you go on/when you go on them, weather, your mood, training, who you ride with, bike condition, where you decide to twist the throttle a little bit more, knowing your limits and staying well within them, etc....all about self control. That and people that don't see you when they're on their cell phone as they make a left turn in front of you. They stink.

      Sounds you have a personal preference! Congrats! From the sound of it it sounds like you prefer an STI over a the new Miata. Now the question is... have you lived with either car? or driven either? I have a personal preference too!! Yay! I thought I'd share. I have owned, flogged, tracked and daily driven an RX8 an RX7, an NB Miata, E36/E46 M3, 2x WRX STI's, a Boss 302 an S2k/8th gen Si and C5/C6 Z06 and I can wholeheartedly say that the 2016 ND Miata is hands down the best drivers cars out of any of these cars just short of a Lotus Elise. No its not going to beat much off the line but when you hit that start stop button and blip that throttle and really feel that power plant frame connecting every sensation into your hands, feet, and ass... and even better, you throw it into a corner and feel the double wishbones up front telling your hands feet and ass every single detail about the road you're fighting with, You might become a believer too. Go to a dealership and test drive one. You might forget to keep your butt from leaking because all the focus is going into the smile on your face. ;) Mazda really created something special for people that love the FEELING of driving rather than creating something that moves quickly. I will admit the moment I was finished test driving the ND (Which I spend a good 50 miles in) I went straight to a Jaguar dealership to get a feel of an FType S... Still can't believe I'm saying this... That Miata will ruin you. Drive one.

      I was just kidding but unfortunately, I know first hand about the stigma of small cars. I used to have a BMW M Roadster and everyone used to poke fun at me. LOL. (Partially because I lifted weights a lot back then and was too huge for the car.). It was all in good fun though. But yeah, that stigma is there. I went on to drive normal M3's after that and my buddies didn't giggle anymore! :o)
      Now I have an STI on order. Can't wait for her to arrive!! (And now I'll probably be ridiculed for it being a 'kids car.' Gotta love the stigma.

    Totally agree with everything you said in this video. Having a good 0-60 time absolutely does not necessarily equate to a car that's good to live with every day, or even a car that's fun to drive in anything other than a straight line. Personally I prefer a simple approach to motoring fun - light, normally aspirated, and with good driving dynamics. Too bad there are very few cars like this being built these days. Most modern cars just feel numb to me.

    A very apt analysis. I've always felt weight made a huge difference over horsepower - feels much easier to control and nimble, especially when trying to do performance-style driving at lower speeds.
    My previous car was a '95 Civic Si, however I sold that and got a '12 STI sport tech four years ago. I like what each car had to offer, but the weight thing drove me nuts. The car feels like a land-yacht compared to a lowered coupe with a 2000lb curb weight. Given the incredibly harsh winters here, I decided to pick up a $500 daily driver to beat on with city miles, ended up getting an '01 Legacy wagon with the 5 speed. That car isn't as powerful as the STI, but it is much lighter and regains some of that lost nimbleness. I can also attest that it handles identically to the STI when breaking traction on all four wheels in snow, so you can have some fun too.
    Ultimately the best way to buy enjoyable cars is with a simple two-step approach:
    1. Max out the ratio of fun per dollar spent.
    2. Keep it cheap enough that you don't need to worry about it.
