MATCHBOX Restoration Yesteryear Y11 Aveling Porter Steam Roller 1958

  • This little model of a steam roller had definitely seen better days. It was 62 years old and had lost some of its parts at sometime in its life. I could see the potential in this little masterpiece of diecast metal. With a new paint job and some 3D printed parts this model has become a thing of beauty once again. I hope you enjoy this video, it is my first makeover for the year.

This was such a fantastic memory jogger, we lived in a coucil estate and they used one of these REAL SIZE rollers to mend the roads uptil the late eighties, it was a great site to see, I think the local steam enthusists still have it in their collection, thanks Marty...

I very much agree with your comments about the firefighters. Walking out of the house in Wyndham Vale into a smoke-filled atmosphere is frightening even though we know how far the actual fires. Firies, career or volunteer, are real heroes.

OMG - you have just transported me back 50 years to that Christmas I got my Mamod. I can almost still smell that evocative mixture of oil, raw meths and burnt meths smoke and steam. And I can almost still feel the burnt and scalded fingers. Ahhh, happy days. Thanks Marty.

Marty, I am so glad that you are safe from the wildfires. It's good news to hear that your family and your friends are all safe as well. That road roller turned out pretty awesome. A lot of Ingenuity and talent going into it to make the missing parts. Not many people have pieces left of their childhood that still work. Be safe my friend.

My dad has a later model steam engine complete with working steering column. As kids we were warned very strictly not to just handle it as obviously we would have burned ourselves when it has a full head of steam. This was a lovely trip down memory lane.

Marty, you do some wonderful restoration work on these little toys. I had that steamroller when I was a child, well over 50 years ago and am amazed at the TLC you give these models. Great description of the Mamod Marty. Brought back memories of my childhood in the early 50s in the UK. Never owned one as a kid but recently I built an MSS loco kit here in Oz. I can afford these things now but they wouldn't get past the wife. She knows I'm well into my second childhood....

  • @ianallen2

Turned out very good. Yesterday, my mate came up and brought me a Mamod TE1 to repaint for him so he can put it on a shelf. It was the original one with the forward only and the stop go lever at the front all brass, and the iold type whistle with the small brass lever that burnt your fingers when moving the levers as they were very hot. I restored and modded a few of these traction engines, the SR1 and a few stationary engines with the toys / saws and hammer that run off them. That was a few years ago now. I even turned a TE1A into a crane model. Made a low loader trailer for a TE1 or the steam roller, a water bowser and a workmans Vardo to tow behind. All I restored and modded were all runners too.

Marty, your little steam engine brought back some fond memories of my childhood. I had a working steam engine back in the 70s. It was made to look like a little boiler with a smoke stack and it ran on little, white pellets, similar to those candy sticks you lick and dip into a flavored sugar.

Superb. It looks great. Fantastic repairs on the missing parts. Always fond of steam traction. They were revolutionary: the horses working days were numbered, when they showed up. Some of the Showman's type Engines had very elaborate lining and pin-striping on them. 8:10 The 2 horizontal pieces on the back of the water tank is the tow hitch. Just 2 metal plates with holes, and a pin was dropped through to hitch a trailer, or farm implement. A Furphy Water Cart would be a good trailer for it. Good on you for the shout out about the Fireys. Haven't seen much smoke here in QLD for a few days now. They must be getting on top of the fires.
