  • After a short break I thought I should make a grand entry. I decided to showcase a double whammy makeover which includes two construction vehicles. I hope you like it. I show a new method of axle reforming which I predict will become the standard for all other Matchbox restorers! - Watch this space! Marty.

Breaks are the only thing that keeps you sane, enjoy all you take. Used to drive the model before that, the tractor had front wheels, so it was a six wheeler.

The hydraulic ram at the coupling area is the steering mechanism, that explains how it steers with no steering wheels!

Wow that loader is a 'Hatra' bit of a Holy grail among classic loader collectors...I remember watching West German Army Engineers using them, they were different in the the whole bucket and arms section could be moved through an arc facilitating loading in very tight spaces.

Absolute 'Fair Dinkum' Mate! Like the nail-punch technique too.
    .
When I was a sprog, around 4-5 years old, I would get dumped on baby-sitter for Sunday afternoons. She had a cardboard box almost full of Matchbox construction trucks, with duplicate numbers of various types - like 43 road-rollers, 24 shovel loaders (Hatans), 52 small dumpers, a handful of artic-dumpers (like this one), standard single shovel tractors and bulldozers with rubber tracks (many missing...) mostly in the same Matchbox 'Canary Yellow' construction-site livery, though I recall one or two being a dull green colour.
    .
Most of these old Matchbox vehicals had no hubs, the wheel and hub were one piece, either in a grey or black plastic, or even cast metal. In the same box were also a large number - prob 30+ - red London double-decker buses and around 20 army 'Ferret' and 'Saladin' scout cars. All these toy vechicals were in varying states of cosmetic condition as they'd all been well played with. It was indeed weird playing with them... No cars, or lorries... Just rollers, dumpers, busses, dozers, Ferrets and Saladins ! Lol! Still, with my then vivid imagination, I was obviously kept occupied for hours with them regardless.
    .
I suspect in hind-sight, that she obtained these as a job lot, possibly from a factory (rejects) sale, hence there being only a few types, but in large numbers.
    .
The same old dear, also lived next to a lovely neighbouring garden, around which ran a model (prob Gauge One) steam railway. The old boy next door would flash this loco up, which hauled around 5 carriages around a raised rail layout. He was as regualr as an 'old school' station master, always flashing up the loco about half and hour after Sunday lunch. He always tooted the whistle to indicate the start of the event... I used to watch keenly from the stair landing window as it chuffed around his garden.
    .
Funny what one remembers, especially so far back... [around 55 years...] Lost count of the number of Corgi, Dinkey, Britains and Matchbox cars I had over the years... All of them collectables now.... If only we'd known. But then, playing would have been very boring at times. I do miss some of them - Dinky's - FAB 1 - Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang (one of the best of all time...), The Batmobile, or Corgi's 007's Gold or Silver DB5, or the Austin 'Learner' car (with realistic steering wheel steering), or the 59 Cadillac Ambulance, with blue light (battery in the base....) and sctretcher.... All fond memories.

WOW! - Sounds like you had a great childhood and plenty of model cars to play with too! - I hope I have helped you to remember some of the forgotten memories of your youth. I must admit that every now and again, a small part of my brain is reactivated and a new memory comes to the surface! - Thanks for posting, all the best, Marty.

Faded plastics like those red wheels can sometimes be brought back to life with some heat. If you've got a heat gun that adjusts low, or if you're just careful not to get your plastic too hot and melt it, you can see color being drawn up to the surface from below. When it's nice and warm and the color has improved, some ATF on there gives it some oils to soak back into the plastic and help keep the color. This works on a lot of plastics used to trim cars. Not sure about matchbox wheel plastics, but if you have a real mangled one to experiment with, you might have a go and see how it does for you. Thanks for the nice relaxing videos.

Marty, try using your butane torch at a safe distance on the faded wheels. Sometimes heat will bring the color back to the surface. Just be aware that you have to be super careful not to melt. Hope the tip helps. Keep up the great video's!

It was actually called a Whitlock DD70, Whitlock went on to make some good 360 degree tracked crawler diggers and some JCB competitors. The tractor front unit was based on the engine and fuel tank of a Fordson tractor of the time (supermajor) with Whitlock's own bodywork/cab added. I watched them working on big building projects in my home town as a boy.

Hi Marty, one suggestion for the paint stripper sequence. You could film the whole process of the disolving paint and then speed up the sequence to a few seconds. It would be interesting to see the paint being stripped. Just an idea in case you find it interesting.

Neat toys that I would have played with far beyond the level of wear shown with those had I had them as a boy.
One tip you might try with the little solder globs to reduce the amount of filing. Let the area cool almost completely. Have a small dampened sponge ready, lightly heat the tip solder glob until it just starts to liquefy then wipe away the solder. Of course there is a slight risk that you overheat the joint and it falls apart. The damp sponge will also help cool the joint to reduce the risk of heat creep. That's just an idea that I would try on large solder globs.

Marty, I have a suggestion for the axles the next time you can't cut them off. Grind it off somewhat flat, carefully center punch it, then use a drill bit slightly smaller than the axle and drill just about 1/4" into the axle leaving only a small amount of material. Them you can squeeze the end together with pliers. That should allow the axle to be removed easily. Give it a go and see how it works.

As a welder i would like to give you some advise. The next time file down or use a dremel tool to make a "v" shaped groove into the crack. This will allow a much stronger bond to the repair, there will be much more welding material holding that together, once filed evenly. Greetings from Spain.
