MATCHBOX Restoration Yesteryear Y6 1926 Bugatti 35

  • Produced from 1961 to 1967 this model was another marvelous Matchbox model of the 'Yesteryear' range. This is an early one which came out in light blue, later versions came out in red. With it's gold steering wheel, radiator grill and spoked wheels , this model is another 'work of art'! It features exquisite details such as multiple instruments shown on the dash and leather straps holding the engine bonnet closed. These details, which were otherwise unseen whilst played with by a child, in my opinion, are what sets these diecast models apart from the other manufacturers of the time!
    I apologize if the sound is a little bit off but I am experimenting with a new mic for the first time!

    Oh this brings back memories. When I was a kid in France (born in UK) my grandparents who raised me had a lot of toy cars that belonged to my 4 uncles and late dad m . My fav. Among them was this very model car and a Le Man's Jaguar. I used to look after them better than the others. When my grandparents passed away I got all the models as my uncles and late dad didn't want them anymore. Over the past 4yrs I've been ground up restoring them . And use pretty much the same thing you do. I use a air brush and some hand painting and thankfully due to my art background have got rather proficient at it. I really enjoy bringing the little cars back to their former glory. Some of them werent in the best shape when I was 9-12 and playing with them (yes I'm a girl of 47 but I was and still am a big tomboy) . It's a good hobby to have to help you relax and wind down but at the same time keeps your mind and brain young with the detail work.
    You do a great job. I've just subscribed after seeing you Austin Taxi restoration video just before this one.
    The cars we tv look awesome. .

    Your comments about the change from blue to red were very interesting. In 1966 I saw the blue version in the window of a little corner shop in Southampton (UK) and decided to buy it. The lady said that they only had red ones now, but offered to let me have the last blue one from the window. I still have it, in 'as new' condition. Fabulous restoration!

    This is by far my favorite Matchbox Car. The Bugatti Type 35 is one of the most beautiful cars ever and matchbox really did it proud. I've never seen a real one however with gold wheels. A+ restoration!

    Another great makeover Marty! The C-clamp conversion was brilliant. And you never need to apologize for the time you take in your restorations, nor if you are "late" getting the videos out. We all want to see your finished products, but you need to take whatever time you need that makes you "happy with that!" If you worry about deadlines and aren't happy with the product, what's the point. It's just a job then. Keep up the great work!

    My dad had one of these on his dresser. He had only a handful of Matchbox cars. I believe that he had the chance one year before I came along to actually drive one of these at a Limerock event. My granddad was big in the sports section of the local paper and took him many cool places. Superbowl, world series, etc.

    Absolutely beautiful restoration! The model looks great and I thought the modified "C" clamp was a great idea. I expect that a press was used by Lesney to insert the spike though the wheel into the body. I too am impressed with level of detail that Matchbox put into their models and they truly were works of art. Thanks for sharing this tutorial and I always look forward to a new one.

    Had a look at Jay Leno’s garage, he doesn’t feature the exact same model of Bugatti but similar. The inner of the two levers are the gear shifter and the outer is the E-break.
    As always a fantastic work with the model

      @N1inSK 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder what Mr. Leno would think of his show being used as a reference for a British die-cast model restoration? I bet he'd be impressed.
      BTW, I have that same blue Bugatti somewhere in a box, in much better condition than originally shown in this video.

  • @nascargas
    @nascargas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am a Bugatti fan. You did right by this model Lesney be damned. The very plain wheels and steering wheel are exactly how the real 1:1 car look however there is a mix of brass and silver colors on different copies of the car. One such car wound up in the drink on purpose as the young Duke who owned it refused to pay taxes on it whence driving it to his home in Austria. It has been recovered 76 years later and is a hot mess. A Brazilian Kit Car company will sell you this car made with all the original schematics and designs that copy the original so faithfully that most would not know it wasnt a real Bugatti. Jay Leno did an episode on one. They are not $1M but we'll over $1k to purchase.
    Regardless, this deserves all the kudos you are recieving for it!

    This is one of the best ones yet, mate! Good job!
    If you want to make it a little easier to make straight, clean lines with a paint brush, you need to touch the tip of the paint brush to a paper towel after you load it up with paint. You want all of the paint in the belly of the brush, but not so much the tip. If you touch it to the paper towel, you can assure that the paint will ooze out from the belly of the brush to moisten the tip when you paint. If there's too much already on the tip, it just goes everywhere. :)
    Amazing work, and thank you so much for the continuing entertainment!

    • @theBaron0530
      @theBaron0530 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a great point (no pun intended, but I'll take it). That's why rounds are so popular among figure painters-brushes with a thicker head but running to a fine point. They work like a fountain pen. The head of the brush is the reservoir, and the point is the tip. The brush and the technique work particularly well with water-based acrylics.

    Another fine job Marty. Just a quick note on color mixing that might save you quantity. When mixing the lighter shades start with white paint and add the darker drops. It’s easier than adding more and more white to a darker color to achieve your goal. That’s the technique I use for paintings.

Not knowing the brand means it will be hard to get a new tip or needle for your airbrush so you should get another just for that option. Another beautiful restauration Marty. This is one of my favourite Models of Yesteryear. Of course being french I am not too much impartial about Bugatti, one of the most fantastic carmakers of all times. Old Jack Odell did a real miracle on this one. I have got two of them in mint condition; the "bleu de france" one, and the red one. I miss the green one but is seems to be too rare and expensive for my purse.

    • @anridapu
      @anridapu 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Titi parisien I agree, the green one is certainly not cheap! There’s been one on eBay for a few years at an exorbitant price and it hasn’t sold. I recently restored an old chipped blue one in the metallic green livery and finished it with a set of grey ribbed tyres from a Y15 Rolls Silver Ghost. (Saved myself about 3 thousand pounds! 😃)
