Dave you might be a bit larger than most Chinese citizens who will be driving this vehicle, it’s just a daily driver for average people.
hey don't say "large".😏 how about "tall"?
Half a year ago i was debating whether to get the Atto 3 or the Dolphin. Ended up with the Dolphin and absolutely love it. Today i went to test drive the Atto 3 with a friend and she said it was the best car she had ever driven and is now considering buying one.
Try the voice assistant, like open/ close the window, so helpful while driving
I guess they don't know how to do that cause of renal short time only.
Not all people are 6-foot-five. I am 180 cm tall and have no problem at all. We have two ATTO3 at our Perth, Australia home. With self-installed solar and charger at home to capitalize ample sunshine we have here, all car required electricity is free!
nice combination with solar
Did you also install a battery bank to store electricity?
@@peterlai9018 That will be my next objective. I plan to install an at least 20KWH LFP battery to store excess solar energy. However, cost is still high in Australia although price has already drastically dropped in China and but itis still not reflected here, I guess, probably due to old inventory to clear.
It is a small practical SUV. If you are 6 five I think you should will have issues getting in and out of it.
We own a Model. Y and the Atto and the BYD is much better built than the Tesla
Analog phones are different from smartphones, but ATTO 3 is basically a low-end version.
I rented an ATTO in Europe and no - my Tesla Model 3 Highland has better build quality and better performance. BYD makes an OK car but nothing phenomenal. Out of the Chinese makes - Zeeker is better.
@@RagnarinVa As an owner of 2 Teslas thus far you live in your own Tesla dreamworld. We drive on a lot of gravel roads and the Teslas rattle a fair bit. The 2 Attos our company owns are both solid.
I am not referring to quality of materials or performance. Just how well they are screwed together.
@@aljoubert8749 - Earlier models of Tesla's yes. But the new Model 3 (Highland) had a better build qualithy than the MB E350 I traded in for it and BYD has plenty of rattles. Look at their rep inside China where consumer groups there consistently complain of issues.
@@RagnarinVa It's unfair to compare them though, model 3/Y cost is more than double as Atto 3 in China. You need to at least put up Han/Seal and Song L for comparison. Even though, they are still significantly more affordable than 3/Y.
I rented one of these a couple of months ago and was amazed at the difference between the different driving modes. The Ecco mode was horrible, the suspension ridiculously soft and the car just bounced all over the road on the rough non-highway roads I was initially driving on. And it was gutless, really bad, very little power when you needed it to overtake. Normal mode was a bit better, but nothing to get too excited about. But when I put it in Sport, what a transformation. The suspension was quite firm, which I much preferred, and suddenly it had a lot more power, it turned into quite a nice sports car, liked it a lot. It has a readout telling you how much power you are using as you drive along. I tried switching it between the different modes to see if Ecco was any more economical, and I found it did not make any difference. That is, it used the same amount of electricity regardless of the mode, so it was a no brainer for me, I drove it in Sport mode for the rest of the trip. And it was really simple to switch between modes with the button on the console and it had a read out on the speedo screen telling you which mode it was in. I also did not realise it had an opening roof until halfway through the week I had it. Once I realised it had one, it was open nearly all the time, and I loved the light, the sunshine, and the fresh air. Well done BYD!!!!!
Owned my Atto 3 for 20 months now. Only ever drive it in SPORTS mode as so long as you don't have a lead foot, the range is barely different in ECO. Being shorter than Dave I don't have any pillar issues and my elbow rests comfortably on the door's window ledge.
Have also done a few 500km road trips with just a 40 minute charging stop midway while I had lunch, so I'm not sure how far people want to go, but certainly wouldn't see a problem adding another 500km.
BYD needs to improve its ADAS, but apart from that my ownership experience has been excellent.
I own the smaller Dolphin and I prefer Eco mode because the whole driving experience is smoother - more lake a Diesel car. Eco mode has still more then enough power.
cool :) Atto 3 is okay, but the Seal is super nice!
This actually shows how different it is, the market in China accept more on Atto 3 and Seal get liked more in the West.
The BYD Atto 3 is a fairly recent arrival in UK, the equivalent sized MG ZS EV arrived 2019-20 , and I bought a launch model then. Very similar but smaller battery then at 44.5 kWh , latest model has a 70 kWh usable one. This segment in Europe is a general use commuter / family daily driver, and popular with older drivers for ease of access. Don't forget that your 6' 5" height is way in the corner case here, with most being 5' 8" to 6' 1" male and a couple of inches less for female, so the B pillar is no issue. And cars here need to be smaller for the generally tighter roads, off highway.
Buy a plane ticket to China to experience more EVs. China now has a 144-hour visa-free policy. You can see a lot of travel bloggers coming to China on youtube.
FYI Tesla has used BYD LFP batteries in the berlin built model Ys. The inclusion and placement of the start/stop button is so the front passenger can turn on/off the infotainment without the driver in the car. it also allows for the exterior accent lighting to be turned off while still remaining in the vehicle.
The BYD Seal wouldve been a better choice if it was available to rent. As its much more similar to Daves model 3.
“We came, we saw, we didn’t stop.” Cathy’s quote from the last video. It sounded like she was channeling my family re: road-trips. You guys are awesome. :)
What a beautiful spot Out of Spec Dave!
Indeed it is Diddy!!! :)
Dave and Kathy, you had me at stringed instrument.
I knew that would get you!
The start/stop button is convenient, because you can leave and lock the car with letting the air on. The newest model offers the option to start the car by pushing the brake. I normally start and unlock the car with the key.
This car is not for you, it should be byd seal U
Or perhaps YangWang U 8.
@@hermesliteratus882
I prefer the YankYourWang 69.
I have same issue getting in most Honda’s - built for shorter/skinny folks.
wr
Xiaomi SU7 is what I am hoping to see in the market
Didn’t realize MG is also now owned by the Chinese…
Has been for nearly 2 decades
Also Volvo and Lotus.
@@cheungchingtong indeed and Im fine with it. The Chinese companies seen to be actually making compelling products under those banners. Especially on the MG side of things!
@@simplygregsterev Agree, look at the new Lotus products after the brand was bought, especially that new SUV, a combination of European sport DNA and Chinese new techs and building quality, and Volvo, turning itself from making big old safe cars to quite some posh ones.
Disappointed that China Car companies did not buy Jaguar...I trust Jaguar will leap all over the world if Chinese worked on it...Look at Volco, from a dull matchbox car to mouth watering models..its a pity Jaguar was left behind.....
With the back floor down and its lowest position BYD reports that it can hold 300 cans of Pringles. Orchestra teacher/musical instrument, LOL.
BYD Atto 3 (Yuan plus) fully loaded top spec priced at 20.3k USD in China。
0:55 Dave, you should do a Short of the string instrument. I bet it would go viral.
0-60 in 7 seconds is more than enough for European cities and even the highway. My former Mazda CX-5 Diesel was slower and I never had problems. Charging time is slow, but I charge at home and I make only a few longer trips (500 km). But then I enjoy a 20-30 minute break for charging.
The Atto 3 is a little small for me, I'm waiting for the BYD sealion to appear here in the UK and it will be my next car. Additionally, the software makes Chinese vehicles more popular than Western vehicles in China.
more like smartphone.
Good show honest review lookin forward to hearing Kathy jammin some strings
Dave great informative video - but I have to wonder - the students in class looking out the window wondering - What is that tall Yank doing in the parking lot talking to a car and a camera. ;)
Love my BYD
Regen is ok for me because I prefer to coast. The brake pedal uses regen, too.
I think that only a tiny minority of people ever (want to) put their arm halfway out the window when its down and just leave it there... More of an issue is getting in and out of the front seats, especially if people have knee/hip/back problems. As for the glass roof that you seem to love: most people I know don't want/need glass in their roofs, and moving glass roofs are just something waiting to break (you mentioned the rattling sound, but there are also seal leaks that are common in glass roofs, and breaking glass from kicked up rocks or falling branches, etc., and they're hard to keep clean and add weight, heat, and cost to the car and reduce range). You and the rest of Out of Spec crew seem to give any BEVs with crappy instrument screens and iPads-glued-to-dashboards (flimsily mounted or not) a "pass", when I feel that -- from a driver's perspective -- it's imperative to have a good instrument panel in front of you with lots of information and shielded from the sun, and an infotainment screen that shouldn't need to be touched while the car is moving (meaning climate controls for fan and temperature as physical switches). That particular infotainment screen looks very flimsy and like it'll break off at some point.
This car is made for smaller people. In Malaysia, the local brands has a similar build, the B pillar is too far forward compared to cars sold for use in the US. The seating position for the driver is uncomfortable and the steering wheel don't seem to go out far enough. Most Grab cars that a locally made, I notice the drivers legs are close to the dash and they are close to the steering wheel.
What do you think of the standard of driving in the UK Dave compared to the USA ?
the little dog is so cute.
That's incredible for a base spec! Is the glass roof tinted?
Doesn't need to be
I am seeing loads of Volvo ex30's on UK roads. Try to test drive one Dave. It is the right size for the country lanes. It looks amazing in all black. It's another made in China EV so you will have to wait a few years to get a European built car in the USA.
CTB's are only on the Seal sedan, not on the Atto3 if i remember correctly
Yes, CTB is only on Seal, Song L (EV) and Sealion 7. Atto 3 was the first car based on Evo 3.0 Platform and unfortunately missed out on CTB. Seal & Song L were among the last Evo 3.0 and Sealion is on newer Evo 3.5.
The P on the car signifies Provisional. When you are first learning to drive and before you get your full licence you can apply for a Provisional licence while you learn to drive. This is normally for a maximum of 2 years. As long as you have a fully licensed driver sitting in the passenger seat and display a legally required red L on the front and back of the car. Some drivers also put an optional green P on the car, to let other drivers know that they might need to be a little bit more patient with them. Some drivers will also leave the P plates on after they pass, or just put them on after they pass, because it's illegal to keep the L on after you pass, to avoid being stopped by the police for driving on your own!
No, you have an L plate on the car when you’re learning in the U.K., you don’t have the p (probationary) plate until you’ve passed. It lets other drivers know you’ve just passed your test and can help you get cheaper car insurance.
@@geoffreyjones6019 Thanks, edited to give a fuller and more detailed explanation.
BTW the MG4 XPower is £37,000 brand new, but a pre-registered ex demonstrator with 2-3k on the odometer can be had for £27-28 ,000. All prices including sales tax.
That’s cheap!
You guys should fly to China to review EVs. It has 144 hours visa free option now.
I don’t have problems sitting in the Atto 3 and test my arms. I am 1.70 m tall.
frunk sold seperately
why dont you not push the chair forwards
I wouldn't take a rental car's configuration as "normal". Rental companies often order cars with unusual configurations that typical consumers don't choose.
I’m enjoying your travelogue, Mr. C. This Atto, however, is an ergonomic nightmare for western-sized drivers.
When do you ever need to rotate an EV screen from landscape to portrait? I can’t think of any use case other than looking at photos, which I’ve never done in my EV. Party trick?
Since used so little, why didn’t they make it manual and put the motor on rear hatch or money saved into a frunk?
I guess when using gps navigation.
Our model y doesn’t even have rear cross traffic alert or360 cam view.
There are 3rd party frunks available.
Come for diesel fuel cost savings, stay for the stringed instrument.
Cost?? Compared to the other available brands... A fracture for a lot of buyers!
BYD ATTO 3's name in China is Yuan PLUS, which is named after the dynasty. It is priced at 110,000-140,000 yuan (15,000-19,200 US dollars). It is the same price as the Corolla and is BYD's cheapest electric SUV.
Why cant tesla give you an overhead view with ultrasonic, best of both worlds like in this byd.
It looks like designed around average Asian person. They will have to modify slightly for average NA person to succeed here.
Aito3 is the smaller BYD SUV, so probably not right for you.
You are too big for this car.
BYD Sealion 6 would fit you better.
I think the united states should allow all the Chinese ev cars they make great ev's
The big 3 are gonna do everything in their power to stop BYD from entering the US market. They know their days are numbered if they ever have to go head to head against them.
Asian size are smaller than westerners. BTW atto 3 is a small car. Byd have larger models.
I also rented the Atto - but it was a nightmare. I had to drive during the night while snowfall. The Atto made 200km range in the cold and it took me 1hour to charge every time. Never again.
You used very diplomatic words for the drawbacks of this car Dave. Which is very nice of you considering the number of China bashers around. I would not buy a Chinese car at this moment. My biggest worry would be the safety factor. So many horror stories with the real estate in China. I am afraid we will see the same happen with their cars. Chinese philosophy is always to cut costs to be competitive. Which is a good philosophy when you do it without cutting corners. Which Chinese also like to do. This being said, in a few short years, there is a great possibility the world will be flooded with good quality Chinese cars at unbeatable costs. Chinese knows how to build and run factories. That is why our dear Elon choose Shanghai for his factory. And it seems he is very happy with his choice.
Giants need not buy the BYD Atto 3.
Tesla is superior in every way.
This is a car that we do not have in the USA, nor would I ever buy one if it were. You sound like a BYD salesman, LOL. I would rather hear more about the area which you are in at various parts of your trip.
Stay tuned. Lots of that coming! Thx for your feedback
Its not 0-60 in 7 seconds its 0-100 in 7.8 seconds correct the facts
7.3 seconds is the spec
B pillar is terrible. That alone is a deal killer. It can’t make up for any great things about the car. Clearly made for people under 5’-6”
I am 5'11" and own an Atto 3. I am perfectly comfortable in it. I don't put my arm on the window sill, so for me this is not a problem. My gripe with the car is the windshield tends to fog up when it rains.
Looks goofy inside. Won’t hold up in looks over time.
It's very 💩 indeed
You typed the same selfi emoji on all tree of the videos. You might own tesla stocks.
I would never buy a Chinese EV and support the CCP military. 100% tariffs are needed whether it’s built in China or Mexico. These cheap cars will kill the US auto industry causing the American taxpayer to bail them out. We’ve seen that before. When the US auto industry fails, think about the millions of Americans losing their job.
Can you afford an electric car?🤣🤣
@@user-to8wr4vv9z Absolutely. Bought a Tesla mS in 2017, replaced it with another mS late 2021, bought a Lucid GT late 2022 for a second home, but returned it within 30 days. Early 2023, I bought an EQS 580. Now, waiting for delivery of Aptera EV in 2025. My business could use a low price EV so will lease one this fall. 😀
no worries, chinese evs are coming, one way lr the other.
@@michaeljiang960 No one will buy them when 100% tariff and they are called unpatriotic.
