    Google Bend Radius & Set Back - you will find more information than you ever wanted about the subject of where to put the 'bend line' on the part to achieve the proper end dimension. This is a required basic task for an A&P Aircraft Mechanic certification. A subject that I studied diligently and then promptly forgot after the air-frame written exam. Thankfully it wasn't a task on the practical exam. What I remember is where to find the information when I need to bend up a part. Your video has inspired me to make a knob for my press. I will have to go back to your other video to refresh my memory on the extensions. Enjoyed as usual!

    I used some adhesive backed felt to quiet my press down, but I placed it on the inside surfaces of the part that moves up and down rather than the two side rails. I also use a large magnet to hold my handle to the press. The drifts and knob are a nice touch.

    I did something similar on my press to the handle you made. I removed the roll pin and installed a set screw in the handle hole. I made mine about 1 1/2" and knurled the circumference of the knob. It works well. Just another way of doing it.

    Loved your ideas but do not own a lathe so i improvised built the bracket out of some body panels had laying around but your idea of making those extensions i took an old 20 ton cyl. cut the shaft then welded a sleeve so it would slip over the one on the press welded a nut on the side to put a bolt threw it to secure it to the arbor then you could just un thread the shaft to your desired length .Your knob it to is a great idea what i did was took a pull start handle off of a dead lawnmower they look to be the same size hole just knocked the spring lock dowel out of the relief valve measured were to drill the hole put it in to place it worked out fine your ideas always inspire those out there to do the same but just more cost efficient to us.

    Yet again Lee you are sowing seeds for me to copy some ideas. I did make a small knob for my hydraulic release though yours is nicer!.
    Perhaps a hole cutter or annular cutter could have been useful for your hole making - although nothing wrong with trepanning and that worked real nice.!
    I must do like you did to cure the awful float noise on the cross beam. Also I have yet to make some extensions (your drifts).
    Nice tweaks :)

    Amazing video as usual, I have exact same press, updated with air over hydraulic. If you want to punch holes in sheet metal, with your machining skills why not just make a set of punch dies for the press? Bet they would turn out awesome. A pleasure watching you work as always.

  • @Roy_Tellason

    The first thing that came to mind for me when I saw the holes you wanted in that sheet metal were punching holes in metal chassis for tube sockets, way back when. I used "chassis punches" made by Greenlee, which aren't exactly cheap but you really don't need that many sizes in the long run. I suppose it'd be possible to make something of this sort, but don't know how you'd go about hardening them...

    Some thick phenolic material on the rails would take up the slop and last forever.... Nice knob! What do you recommend using as material for the drifts??

  • @johnmilner7603
    @johnmilner7603 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would have made a stop ledge on the front upper support that's in line with the top of the pump jack rather than having a wide spot sticking out that you could run into. Or you could have drilled a small hole in the shafts and used a small round magnet placed in the hole so it can stick to the side frame of the press. For the release knob I would have knurled the end for your fingers to grab. I don't have a lathe or I would make one but my lathe is at my HS which I used for 4 yrs in machine shop back in the early 70's.

  • @MaturePatriot
    @MaturePatriot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The knob stock looks to have been faced in the lathe. If you had center drilled it, you could center it in the mill with a center. (too many centers in that sentence) Great work overall.

    Another method for cutting those big holes would be a hole saw ...I only know about those because I am an electrician and we cut lots of holes in sheetmetal for conduit fittings....they work great! Really fast though probably not quite as clean as your lathe work ...just lots faster! I probably would have screwed the sheetmetal on to a piece of scrap plywood and then used hole saw (metal cutting saw of course) and just go right through ....then just dress the hole with a fine file and maybe some sand paper

  • @tamiamibusch

    I took apart the jack and flipped it to allow getting rid of the cross members. You need to take apart the jack to add a pickup tube for the hydraulic fluid. I just could not stand how wobbly the factory arrangement is .

    Lee, I have a 10 in clausing 4900 lathe that somehow the top gib is broken and need a new one. Could you build it for me as my grinder and mill are not totally set up. Clausing sent me a drawing and I have 4 inches of the 6 inch gib. 😁😁 It is not available and my skills are not up to snuff yet.

    I'm just wondering are these valve really "petcocks"? I always assumed petcock to be a valve to remove fluids like on a motorcycle or generator fuel tanks for example ...Or at the bottom of a radiator to drain coolant etc ...I'm just wondering if that is really the correct term for a hydraulic release valve which is a closed system?? I don't know it just kind of sounds wrong to me is all

  • @josepeixoto3384

    Man,you know your stuff; just seeing you run your finger on that fresh cut, showed *some*experience...
    (edit, after seeing the whole thing): I would not add anything outside of the perimeter of the u-channels: it's just waiting to grab your shirt and skin;
    And you don't need that: you enclose the u channel with some sheet metal on the outside,and you have all the enclosed shelves you need; i am a car mech,not a machinist, but if i saw that in my shop,i would have it taken down *NOW*.

      @@melgross a lot of people don't have the tools to make things, plus would be quick cash for the maker. There's so many attachments for trucks, tools etc so what's the difference...?

      Mike Finto these are all pretty simple things to make, and unless you’re just a mechanic, buying a press for bearings and such, making these tools shouldn’t be a problem.

    I like the mods you've made. In case it sounds interesting to you, here is another TH-cam video of someone who made some interesting mods to his 20-ton press:
    th-cam.com/video/oC63WyaoXN0/w-d-xo.htmlm25s
    th-cam.com/video/oC63WyaoXN0/w-d-xo.htmlm45s
    There are a few mods in the video, but by far the most interesting mod, shown at the link, is where he replaced the 20-ton bottle jack in the press with an alternate 20-ton bottle jack that includes an air-motor allowing the jack to be operated by air pressure (in additional to the standard pump handle).
