  • Playing Guitar... Guitar Players! What Inspires You to Play Guitar? Where Does The Inspiration Come From? What's Your Story?
In this latest video as part of my ‘Recording’ playlist I take a look at the possible reasons why individuals pick up the guitar and ask the following questions.
1: Is music something you just enjoy for what it is?
2: Is music something that helps you through challenging times?
3: Is music a platform to release inner tensions, conflict, emotions, political rants?
4: Is music part of a deep spiritual experience or journey?
5: Is music and music gear simply a commodity to make money?
Down through the centuries from the earliest recorded ancient records of music and instruments, music has been used for Relaxation, Entertainment, Spiritual Experiences, and of course, used to drive fear into an opposing enemy. During the 1970s due to ill health and a rather depressing economy, I had truck-loads of material to help me write songs to pour-out what troubled me. Looking into the lives of so many musicians and composers often reveals similar stories which have led to some of the world’s most popular songs. What’s your story? What inspires you?… Enjoy!

I got my first guitar when I was 11 (I'm in my 40's) and I hated it because it didn't make chords when I strummed it. 😂 I took it back up when I was 14 and had a Sears acoustic to learn on, the action was so high, you could fit a coaster under it. My interest was piqued by grunge music making the guitar more accessible. I never looked back. In my early 20's I was in a band and we cut a couple of records that we didn't sell 1000. I quit the band to explore my rekindled love for Christ and started playing with a Christian band that didn't really go anywhere. I largely gave up playing electric guitar because I was (and still am) the drummer in the worship band, but in 2019 my love for the electric guitar was renewed and I've been tone chasing ever since.
    Cheers Stu!

Hi Allen - Yes I remember those days of staring at my guitar and scratching my head thinking what on earth do you do, to sound like those records I loved listening to... ;-) That's an interesting journey regarding your Christian Faith. When I left the world of Rock N Roll and entered a church for the first time I was more interested in trying to find an answer for the existence of life, than the worship team trying to get me involved in music. In years to follow, my creative outlet would be turned upside down... ;-) Yes... chasing tone... that's what I've been doing these last few years... and I think I'm happy now... ;-) Regards: Stu

Music has always been about having fun, for me - whether that’s listening to it, reading about it, writing about it, or playing it. Learning and finding new ways to progress on guitar and recently building partscasters, is a constant challenge.
Ultimately, for me at least, playing with other people is what’s most satisfying - especially when lucky enough to find people who really connect (personally and musically).
Playing for an audience is another level and entertaining a crowd and getting them dancing and wanting more is definitely rewarding. I don’t play regularly (except at home) but have particularly enjoyed playing a few charity gigs - they’ve always been good fun.
TH-cam has become a new source of inspiration and enjoyment and the opportunity to share comments, with great channels like yours, Stu 👍

Hi Derek - Many thanks for chipping in with your own take on what inspires you to play guitar. I remember the time I began my guitar journey at 13/14 and my High School maths teacher caught me writing out chords and scales - he promptly ripped up my notes which ensued in a fight which led to my suspension... they just didn't understand that music was all I wanted to do... ;-)
Partscasters... lol, that brings back memories... I was always rebuilding a Strat I had back in the 1970s. My band mates would wonder what colour it would be this week and what shape I would cut-out of the body. It would finally be set of fire...
I agree, jamming with others, particularly when there is a spark in the communication between players can be really rewarding and just so much fun to do, but as you say... not always easy to find those connections.
I have no intention playing in front of anyone these days but recording in my own small studio brings a lot of fun and peace. However, in recent times I have been meeting a number of musicians and perhaps some collaborative work my ensue.
Yes, there's a lot of great talent on TH-cam and so many folks teaching every level of guitar genre - I remember when I started out, there was so little help available and often other guitar players would hide their favourite licks from you... you just had to try and work it out yourself.
Thanks for the kind remark Derek... take care and regards: Stu

@@derekclacton Hi Derek - Yes, I'll certainly share what I'm up to. I have written about 20 new songs / theme tracks that I'm developing. Hopefully my own process will be of some benefit to those interested and in turn get to hear what others are up to. There are a couple of regular viewers working on their own materials / albums - Hopefully they will share some of that. I don't talk about my old recording days back in the 70s because the recorded material is not uplifting - today is a different story... Regards: Stu
