  • Custom Shop Gibson Les Paul Special - Double Cut TV Yellow 1960s VOS (Vintage Original Spec) with Custom P-90s Historic Series - It's Just Such a Classic! & What a Machine!
    I’ve often thought this simple guitar model from Gibson has often been over-looked having somewhat been put into the shadow of the Single-Cut model, which in fairness was the first to be unveiled back in the late 1950s. The Double-Cut comes in both single (Junior) and duel pick-up (The Special) versions sporting P-90 pick-ups and in this particular release - fitted with a pair of Custom P-90s. I have done a P90 comparison against the 50s era Gold-Top, see that video review here - ( • Q&A:5 Gibson Les Paul ... )
    In many ways it’s simplicity is reminiscent of the Fender Telecaster, being a solid slab of mahogany with slightly rounded body edges albeit with a set-neck instead of bolts. The Gibson Junior, in both its single-cut and double-cut forms, was originally earmarked as the company’s "student" model with the initial price of the Les Paul Junior starting at $49.50 which would be over $500.00 in 2024. It's often said that the TV Yellow got it’s name due to that particular colour showing well on Black and White television. Certainly, yellow filtration is used in black and white photography to increase contrast and the faded yellow on the Guitar would meet ‘Broadcast’ safe contrast levels for television. As this particular guitar was purchased used (albeit it practically new) in this review I explain what to watch out for when buying used and tips to help avoid scams. Throughout this video I give an overview of the guitar and it’s parts along with some simple sound examples both clean, over-driven and boosted... Enjoy!

      Hi Eliminator - Nice, a genuine 61... I wonder how close the VOS model compares with the original? They really are expressive guitars and I think they often get over-looked. Regards: Stu

    That’s a nice sounding amp. I came for the guitar but the amp blows me away.

      Hi - Thanks for chipping in - Yes, it's a really nice amp... Bad Cat make a number of these in both head/cabinet and combo models. I have recently done 2 reviews on this Combo Black Cat model and it's extension cabinet - check them out via my playlists... regards: Stu

      Hi Marcus, thank you for the comment, always appreciated. I have seen the odd one selling for reasonable prices particularly if they are well worn. I have found that pairing the guitar with these Custom P-90s with the right type of amplifier makes a difference. Regards: Stu

    I love a double cut Special but the location of the neck pickup is what made me get a single cut. I realize it was moved farther from the neck in 1960 to strengthen the neck joint but I'd buy one if they offered a model with that configuration.

      Hi Max - Thanks for chipping in. I did consider the Single-Cut but the DC had a connection for me (early 70s) back when I first started where Gibson guitars were out of reach for most youngsters and a used LP Junior or Melody Maker could be more attainable by saving up hard and selling everything you owned ;-) However, I never did own either... That checking is quite drastic. I have a Gibson DC Jr with pretty much the same finish and hasn’t checked at all for 3 years.
    Really weird that it doesn’t fit in the case either!

      Hi Shaun - Yes it is pretty strange, certainly took me by surprise. We had a really nasty cold season last year and I'm wondering if that's what did it. The guitar still intonates perfectly so no issues there. I have seen this happen before on Gibson's and PRS - The case fitting? it holds the guitar well but the padding underneath is not as good as it should be, my other Gibson cases are good. You would have thought with this being a Custom case it would be better. Still... It's a great guitar to play... ;-) regards: Stu

    Sounds like a Rock & Roll Machine, Stu! Like both single and double cuts myself - the new strap button would be my preference too.
    For a Custom Shop guitar, the case should have been padded like the second example you showed but with the aged tuners, the finish cracking does add to the vintage vibe. Just as an aside, I always thought of VOS as Very or Vintage Old Stock - hadn’t heard of it meaning Vintage Original Spec. - always nice to learn something!
    Glad you found a dream guitar for your collection and had such a good buying experience 👍

      Hi Derek - Many thanks for chipping in and commenting. Yes, it's got quite a crunchy sound to it. I see on the Epiphone and some other manufacturers models they have put the button on the upper horn. While the addition was done buy a luthier for the original owner, it would be an easy job to do. Yes, the case, while otherwise an excellent tight secure fit just lacks enough padding at the heel for some strange reason. As you say, the lacquer checking fits with it's vintage vibe so as someone with relic fenders, I'm okay with it aging all by itself... ;-) I also understood VOS to mean the latter but as I was checking my facts that's what kept coming up... so we have both learned something... ;-) It was indeed a good buying experience, the seller was of a similar age and we exchanged stories from our younger playing days... he loved the little portable VOX amplifier I took to check the guitar as he had never seen anything like it before... thanks again Derek, take care, regards: Stu

      @@StuGuitarChannel I would like to recommend a pre CBS fender telecaster for you to be honest

      @StuGuitarChannel  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@aminahmed2220 Hi Amin - Ouch! That would be very expensive, so unless your offering to buy me one I don’t think that will happen… ;-) I had a quick look on-line and saw a couple for around $20,000.00… I bought a book on Telecasters with lots of great pictures of early pre CBS guitars and I think that’s about as close as I am going to get to one… :-) The closest I can get to a pre CBS design are the 2 Custom Shop relic Stratocasters (1957 & 1964) and green Custom Shop relic Telecaster (1961) I have previously reviewed - they are all pre 1965 designs. Have a great weekend Amin… regards: Stu
