  • Vox DA5 Classic Digital Amp with FX (Red) A Battery and or Mains Powered portable Amplifier.
When I started out in the early 1970s Vox Amplification was a Brand all budding guitar players knew about, and along with Marshall and Fender products, getting to own any of those was the goal for most. But when this Vox amplifier arrived in the studio, courtesy of a friend helping me back to guitar playing 40 years on… I was somewhat puzzled by the size of it!
Vox Amplification began life back in 1957 located in Kent, which is a County on the South and East Coast of England. As with most things British, it was eventually bought-over by another manufacturer overseas. As of 2024, the famed AC Models are made in China.
In this video review I take a good look at the 11 amplifier settings and 11 special effects settings and hopefully you will get some idea of what this little box is capable of. Despite its 6.5” speaker housed in a box you can hold in one hand, it’s surprisingly versatile and depending on the environment you are playing in, it does not sound too much like your playing in a toilet. Of course, small speakers and small enclosures often sound tinny and frankly - everything you do not want your guitar to sound like. Yet, play this in a carpeted (non-reflective) environment and you can get some fairly thick tones depending how you set it.
In this review I use a budget Fender Squier Debut Telecaster (see previous video review - • UB:35 Amazon - Fender ... ) and a Fender Custom Shop Telecaster (see previous review - • UB:25 Custom Shop Fend... ) going through all the effects available in quick succession and also a jam track test just to give some context as to how this little box can be used... Enjoy!

A great example of forgotten and discontinued gear that would be nice for beginners dipping their toes into amps and effects for a minimal investment. It sounds pretty good too. I like these because it'll help new guitarists figure out what they like and can then seek out other amps and effects. Good show Stu.

Hi Allen - As I mentioned, this was actually tossed into a rubbish dump but saved by a mate who dropped it into me. Our sound engineer put it on the bench and solved a simple wire break and the little Vox was back up and running. As you say, definitely a great little practice amp for someone starting out. It has a lot of very usable features to aid a practice routine. PS: How's the Tone X doing? found your favourite set-up yet? One of these day's I'm going to persuade you to try out an old valve amp ;-) PPS: I've got 3 guitars being dropped into me soon - I think you will approve... even if I think they look awful ;-) Regards: Stu

@@StuGuitarChannel Tonex is humming along as usual and sounds great! I may not have ever mentioned this, but I traded my AC15 for a guitar about a year ago. I love tube amps, but can't get over the flexibility and portability of my digital gear cheers brother

I just came across your channel by luck. Must admit I'm not young anymore. Probably classed as an o.a.p by some. 68 years old and just started trying to learn guitar . So don't know much about amps and speakers. But love your channel.

Hi Robert - Congratulations on picking up the guitar. My brother-in-law just recently picked up the guitar (at 80 years old) and is loving it! Do subscribe to the channel and hit the bell for notifications. You will find a whole range of gear review videos on my channel starting out at the beginning ( th-cam.com/video/pMpEMCRA9Oo/w-d-xo.html ) and working my way through all kinds of gear after being away from it all for 40 years. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask as I am always happy to help where I can... all the best and enjoy learning... regards: Stu

Hello Stu - I like Vox Gear but don't own any items but always seem to go to a Vox setting on my Amp Sim and my Boss Combo Drive foot pedal. Oh by the way my G&L Comanche is on its way. This Amp you are demoing is the business. Cheers

Hi Rob - I bet you can't sleep.... Lol - every vehicle that comes near the house, every knock on the door... ;-) I look forward to hearing all about it, along with lots of pics and a wee video clip of you playing would be good. Oh! bye the way - a mate of mine is dropping some guitars off - guitars I would never play... but definitely worth a review... ;-) Yes, the old Vox tones were something I enjoyed as a youngster but could never afford one - this little box is not really how I remember things but what can I say... another bit of kit saved from being trashed. Regards: Stu
