    I loved the tone and enthusiasm of this woman. She spoke the words of the only version of the Quran that I have ever read, one which protected women. Sadly over the years I have heard so much negativity supposedly from the Quran or Hadith that I began to wonder if I'd read a fake translation. I have worked with muslims and found them to be both friendly and charitable, and wish more people would judge them not for their extremists, but for the people of faith. I am a Sephardic jew, not a Zionist, and my people found safety and acceptance amongst Islam. It was the Christians who instituted a pogram against us in Spain leading us to seek safety elsewhere (then the pograms of Russia and Germany). Until her death, my grandmother stood up for the people of the Book. I admit that I have made mistakes and assumptions about Sharia, and that some of it was done from fearmongering in the press. We need to talk to one and other, especially when so many fanatics exist to damn all the People, when the L-rd our G-d would stand for all of us, let us seek the heart of G-d not the selfishness of man, so that the word of the L-rd our G-d will show us the way through compassion, understanding and our ultimate oneness under the Messiah to come.

  • @gbaili
    @gbaili 9 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    Before I was a wife and mother, I was Muslim. I had value even then. When I became a wife and mother, my worth didn’t suddenly shift and depend on that. And if I am no longer a wife or mother, I will still have purpose. Allah, the One who created me, said:“And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.” 51: 56 This is my purpose. This is what I am supposed to do with my life. However, when we talk about Muslim women, it is usually in the context of her fulfilling her “purpose” of being a wife and mother. But what does this mean for the women who do not fit into either category? Does it mean she is not fulfilling her purpose in life? Does it mean that she has no value? That she is worthless? Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) was not a birth mother. Maryam (may Allah be pleased with her) was not a wife. And Asiyah (may Allah be pleased with her) was not a birth mother and her husband was Fir’aun. Yet, these women are praised. Why? Allah says:“And Allah presents an example of those who believed: the wife of Pharaoh, when she said, “My Lord, build for me near You a house in Paradise and save me from Pharaoh and his deeds and save me from the wrongdoing people.”
    And Mary, the daughter of ‘Imran, who guarded her chastity, so We blew into (her garment) through Our angel, and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures and was of the devoutly obedient.” 66:11 We need look no further than the incident of slander against Aisha to see an example of her unshakeable faith. When her parents told her the rumours and they had no other words for her, she said, “I cannot but repeat the words which the father of Prophet Joseph had spoken: ‘fa-sabrun jamil’: I will bear this patiently with good grace.” And when the verses were revealed that declared her innocence, the first thing she said was, “Alhamdulilah.” She didn’t thank Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). She didn’t tell her parents: “I told you so!”While it is indeed honourable to be a wife and a mother, it is problematic to single out these roles as the honour of a woman. Once we do that, we’ve taken away her fundamental value that comes from her having faith (imân). This value that she has is independent from any role she may carry out.“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.” 49:13 Allah says: “Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women, the believing men and believing women, the obedient men and obedient women, the truthful men and truthful women, the patient men and patient women, the humble men and humble women, the charitable men and charitable women, the fasting men and fasting women,the men who guard their private parts and the women who do so, and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so - for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.”What’s beautiful is that these are all characteristics, not roles! And Allah says: ‘And whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while being a believer- those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged, (even as much as) the speck on a date seed.” 4:124 And “Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to have a good life, and We will surely give them their reward (in the Hereafter) according to the best of what they used to do.” 16:97 So a Muslim woman is striving to please her Lord, even when fulfilling her roles as wife and mother. Her value is not placed in her servitude to her husband or her children, but to her Lord. When we talk about men, we don’t say that they were created to take care of women and that’s it. So why do we tend to focus on the same for women? We take a few hadith and the rest become irrelevant. We know the Prophet (peace be upon him) encouraged men to marry virgins, but looking at his (peace be upon him) example, we see that he married women who were not virgins. He (peace be upon him) didn’t see them as worthless. When Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) explained why he married a previously married woman, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “You have done well.” (Bukhari) And he (peace be upon him) said, “The one who looks after and works for a widow and for a poor person, is like a warrior fighting for Allah’s Cause or like a person who fasts during the day and prays all the night.” (Bukhari) What if we took some hadith about men and made them the criteria to judge a man’s worth?“The best of you are those who are best to their wives, and I am the best of you to my wives.” (Tirmidhi) So what if a man doesn’t have a wife? Does that make him worthless? Does that make him the worst of men? Of course not. On what basis do you then judge him? The same way we should value the women - “Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you (who has the most taqwa).” Noble Quran Chapter 49: Verse 13

      +Lisa Power You must know that this is not true. In the Prophet's time there were people who joined his ranks as Muslims, but during a attack by enemy forces, they will desert to join the enemy forces to fight their fellow Muslims, to do which they will have to renounce their Muslim faith. The verse in the Quran refer to this. Any American, British or European soldier who does this is war is subject to martial law, i.e. death. It is interesting that the faith you so vehemently criticize requires me to research and think before responding to you, in peace.

      +Bruce Wayne Indeed!!! Your comment has made me feel content. Somebody needed to say that. It was over-due. And you know what, this comes from the cultural context... people need to start separating their culture from Islam. It is the culture which has formed such baseless, soul-crushing (for those women who can't conceive) jahil perceptions. A person's worth is in their characteristics. And the worth of a role is a different topic.

    • @yaseenn.mohamed1246
      @yaseenn.mohamed1246 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Lisa Power +Lisa Power None of what you said is in the Quran. Some of it is in the Hadiths (check on Wikkpedia for its meaning if necessary). Addressing the accusation of paedophilism, Muhammad's first marriage at 25 yrs was to Khadija (ra) then 40. At 50, when Khadija passed away and he lost the protection of her family, he married Ayesha (ra), then 6, that offered him her family’s protection, while she continued to live with her parents. He also married, almost simultaneously, Sawda (ra) 5 years older than him, instead of a, say 18 yrs old woman. These are not the actions of a paedophile. He consummated with Ayesha when she was 9. He was carefully watched by friends and foe alike all the time and there is no record that he related with another young person.
      The marriage of young girls was a common practice until the early 20th century. A Wikipedia search for the youngest mothers lists 109 and only 2 are Muslims. The rest are almost all Christians. “At the start of the nineteenth century in England, it was legal to have sex with a 10 year-old girl.” In Scotland it was 7 yrs. “Most states (in the US) codified statutory age of consent during the 19th century (as) 10 years.” Until the 1960s, 7 yrs was the legal age of marriage in Delaware.
      The Canon Law compiled by Johannes Gratian allows meaningful marriage after 7 yrs. Until recently the Vatican sanctioned marriageable age for girls was 12. The Prophet Issac (pbuh) at 40 married Rebecca (ra) at 3. The Jewish laws Mishnah, Sanhedrin, Talmud and Old Testament approve a man to have intercourse with a girl any-time after her age of 3, betrothed or not, for it was one way to ‘acquire the girl.’ Joseph the Carpenter was 80 - 90 yrs when he married 12 yrs Mary, mother of Jesus (praise and peace be upon them). A few years ago in ‘Kiryat Sefer (Modi’in Illit) town in Israel a 13-year-old girl was married off. In ‘Yavne’el in Israel 12 year old Jewish girls were married off. Child marriage was the norm in Christian and Jewish society until recent times.
      The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) married Ayesha 1397 yrs ago and the culture he lived in expected him to consummate that marriage when she reached puberty; otherwise it would have brought shame to Ayesha’s family of something being wrong with her. Marriage and consummation has been of public interest, even to this day in some societies. It was his marriage to young Ayesha, a highly intelligent and vibrant person that made it possible for us to have fine details of his life forming a significant part of Islamic history and knowledge. No other prophet has this advantage. An older woman of that time would not have remembered such detailed observations as Ayesha did.
      Why judge an event that happened 1397 yrs ago when our grand parents or their grandparents almost always married very young.

      Yaseen N. Mohamed And as french philospher Montisque said in his sixteenth book pages 245-246 "women in hot climates (such as the arabian desert) are mature at the ages of 8, 9, and 10... Non Muslims keep going back to this "point" even though science debunks them and proves to them she was a women not a girl... But they have nothing. Let alone the fact that the prophet's worst enemies at that time didn't see this as an issue which proves she was a women.

    As far as verses in the Qur'an about killing, all have to do with capital punishment, self-defense or pre-emptive strikes against an aggressing enemy in a wartime situation established by the state (not individuals or rogue groups). These qualifications are revealed through context by reading & understanding the verses that come before/after and the circumstances surrounding the revelation of the verse. Now back to my question for a 3rd time: Where is the Islamic text that teaches HONOR KILLING?

    A quick note about polygamy to add; polygamy mainly serves the women, not men. We are taught, through bad example through society and people who made it the other way around, that polygamy serves only for sexual desires of man in women, but in its heart is a service to women.
    You still need to be just to the other wives you marry, you still need to spend on them and their children and you still need to concern yourself about her parents, her family, and whatelse. This is burdensome to men, polygamy is mostly a service to women.

    I disagree with her on one point though. As far as I know a man does not need a permission of his first wive to take the second one. He naturally mustn't disregard her opinion and make her unhappy with his decisions, however, strictly theoretically speaking there is no source I know of that speaks for what she stated regarding that matter.

    Also, it's way more stressful for women these days if you look at it. If they're the child bearers, they have to raise them but yet work full-time to ease the man in paying rent etc? Doesn't seem that equal. You can take equal responsibility to taking care of children but isn't it easier if both focus on one & not try do both? So the man keeps the family protected & provides while the woman is the root tree of the family & home. You both are then providing & meeting both ends.

    Because of this type of attitude I don't think many Muslim men take their women or their honor seriously. Or just because it isn't a problem for them directly, they don't want to stand up for the rights of others. So I think Islam is like many other religions where it is nice on paper but people will always take any good thing and use it with impure motivations for the worst and most oppressive outcomes possible. Not just Islam but most religions I see this.

    All very sincere and valid questions.
    1) Men are permitted to "lightly strike" with absolutely NO harm and NO mark. "Beat" is a mistranslation. And this is a last resort. Muhammad never "beat" his wives, much less even "struck" them.
    2) The other wives must consent to it. This practice is the exception not the rule. It's a solution to women not being able to find men to marry because they naturally outnumber men in society or due to war.
    3) No, this is a CULTURAL practice not a religious one.

    First: Why is it in the Qur'an, husbands are entitled to physically harm their wives?
    Second: Why is men entitled to four wives yet women are expected to be virgins and loyal to one husband?
    Question time.
    Do you agree, women's place is in the house to serve the husband ?

    • @kausamsalam8543
      @kausamsalam8543 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Typically misguided questions, but I’ll try. Thanks. No Muslim husband that I know from many community members has harmed his wife with a religious okay. Allah says both genders are spiritually equal but different, and we Muslim women, (majority), are fine with the Divine recommendation that our husband takes care of us, and vice versa, and that if, God forbid, I ever did some awful thing such as cheating, flirting, or adultery, Astaghfirullah-(common among many women these days)-I’d have had no issue with my leader-spouse reprimanding me or lightly touching my hand to remind me of marital protocols. But that never happened, Alhumdullilah. And Islamic guidelines are practical, not just voice-based. Average Muslim man does not have more than one wife at a time-most don’t even marry a second time because Muslim men are committed to their wives and do not cheat on their wives as most people in other cultures tend to do (and hide). That’s because we have accountability in front of the One God Almighty whom we call Allah, (to whom Jesus prayed in the wilderness, Alaha). And as a smart Welsh imam once noted, there’s nothing in our Quran that tells women that they should stay in the kitchen all day and cook and clean for their husbands. My own dad often cooked meals and snacks for his beloved wife, my mom. And my husband often took my children to school or met with their teachers -and took responsibility for helping educate our children.
      As the sister speaker says, some Muslims choose the cultural baggage over the actual teachings of Quran. I tend to enjoy cooking and taking care of family when I could -and that was a blessing from our culture, and still tried to follow as many Islamic teachings as I could.
      As the sister says, women being allowed to participate in the politics and discussion 1400 years ago-women having property rights 1400 years ago -these are natural parts of our Shariah, (that “fiery law” prophesied in Isaiah -about those who’d praise God “with a new song” -call to prayer. Women in Islam were treated like queens and princesses by their doting husbands that many modern women do not know how to accept or appreciate. And freeing slaves is an atonement in Islam. Quran says it is better to marry a believing slave woman than a woman who denies God’s Oneness, and does wicked deeds, “though she may allure you.”
      How many women of today refuse to accept their husband’s leadership in the family, and how many women who despise men treat men like slaves and inferior creatures, taking away men’s masculinity. In Islam, we choose to honor our husband or wife -as much as possible and not let the tides of aggressive cultures take away from their innate masculinity or femininity. No woman needs to be like a man to feel confident in who she is, nor does any man need to feel like a woman to feel nurturing or kind when he chooses to be for the sake of Allah. 🌴
      Besides, the four wives allowance is only if a man is able to treat all four with equity, love, finances, and respect. If a Muslim woman chooses to work in her profession, she gets to spend her money however she chooses, while being blessed and protected by her husband’s hard work. Besides, in the Bible, people like Solomon were said to have 700 wives and concubines Astaghfirullah. That’s not the Prophet Soleiman that we know. Abijah in Bible was said to have 14 wives and concubines and lovers and David in the Bible was a stalker of a nude woman bathing--such things are not found in Quran or Islam, contrary to the phobic people’s opinions.

    Sister Lisa I have read many books big and small and watched videos on the topic in continuation to make some comparision. You talk is very good in terms of compact slow paced discussion presentation except towards the end.
    It will be wonderful if you can get some one to produce a new video in 10-12 minutes.
    1.Cut out the front intro and reduce some input from the end namely the
    Aslamia
    2. research project summarized in few words
    3. use red background under white and gold writing to enhance the contrast and greater focus
    tie up some loose ends .
    Re-title the video a bit crispier if can
    It will do great service to Muslims and non - Muslims.
    Your confident pose sincerity and non-apologitic stance come through positively.

    As for lightly striking the wife, it is not with the hand. But miswak(stick used for brushing teeth) so if with a wife disobeys the husband on a matter, then at first he is supposed to stop talking to her, if this doesn't help, then even he's not supposed to strike, but separate the beds and even if she doesn't listen, then is to lightly strike as a final warning before parting or divorcing.
    I'd recommend this video: /watch?v=K1FYvtjH5uM

I've studied religion for the last twenty years, I've read both the Quran and the Bible repeatedly first when I was 13, I've also read the Book of Mormon and the Bhagavad Gita and I learned how each of these books came to exist, something most believers fail to do. I read the Quran in English, I've heard that some things are lost in translation, you'd think the creator of the universe would choose a language more easily disseminated hu.h
