    I love how much the chipping really brings out the character of the Y-Wing. I always imagined them as the shitbox work horse ship of the rebellion.

    I am in the process of buying 3 or 4 of each of these Star Wars kits as they are works of art right out of the box. I plan to build one for myself, then one for my Grandson placed in a display case and save one for myself to build again as you pointed out, they are such a pleasure to build and really do look magnificent!

    Lovely model building, great job!. That sponge technique is a simple yet very effective way to get the chipped finish. I think it's much easier, and better that the salt and hairspray method. I have enjoyed watching this one and others of your videos. I watched your A-Wing video and was inspired to get my own build going. One thing that surprised me about this kit was the choice Bandai gives the modeller between a plastic canopy with no clear windows, and 3 all clear plastic parts to be painted if you want an open canopy. I plan to use the plastic canopy without the clear plastic windows. I guess that option is best for seeing inside as there is limited visibility anyway, and you would probably get a better view of the pilot. What do you think? Please keep making these great build videos. All the best to you from The Philadelphia suburbs in USA :)

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks John! I usually go for the open canopy frames for these kits as that was how they were built for ILM to eliminate reflections, so it's more realistic if you want to go the studio model route, but less realistic in real life, so it's just down to preference really. And yes, the pilot is a bit hard to see even without the clear plastic!

      I've been on a hunt for the perfect yellow hue as I am building the Y-wing represented in Rogue One. What I came up with is Tamiya XF-4 or Vallejo Light Yellow or German Yellow. The latter gives it that already faded weathered feel to it. Just in case you decide to build a gold squadron y-wing. ;)

  • @abledog006
    @abledog006 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    One of my favorite SW ships. So glad I purchased two... I'm going to have to do a 'Red Jammer' as well. Did you do a gloss coat before you applied the decals? It looks like you're using a flat paint & I understand decals work better on a gloss finish. Either way, a beautiful build!! I also like the way your vid's are done. I think the music loop works well... not too loud, or overwhelming, just a nice low key tune that keeps the audience from hearing background noises while you build. I like the amount of info you look to give as you build. I saw another vid someone else did on this kit without music.. it was a little difficult to hang with. Your video's are well done.. keep 'em coming!! :)

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback. :) Yes usually I do a gloss coat before applying decals, but since they are so small on this model I didn't think it would make much difference.

    great build! as a huge y-wing fan, i gotta get this. If i may ask, why you didnt do any wash? would it look too agressive on a smaller ship like this? i just thought the details could be brought up littlebit more in the exposed part, and the cockpit seams too. Thanks for the video, i enjoyed it a lot! also taught me few cool techniques like the chipping.

    Do you use acrylic paint & if so do you have to spray a primer to get the acrylic to stick?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and no. :) I find Vallejo acrylics will stick just fine if you leave them to properly dry. Having said that I tend to use Tamiya primer as it speeds me up a bit.

    Nice job. I really think well done sponge chipping ends up looking better than "true" salt chipping just because of scale. Salt grain is just too big for something this tiny. Sponge can make dots so much tinier than salt, it matches the scale of what chipping would look like on a giant ship like that.
    I liked your video overall too, no obnoxious music, calm clear voice, clear video, good explanations... altogether a well made tutorial. I can't wait to see how you did the A-Wing as that's the one I've already done so far.

    Ah, the very rarely seen red striped Y-Wing! There was one ILM Y-Wing filming miniature built that did have red markings but where it appeared in the original movie it is not known. In Lucas' original story the X-Wings had blue markings and the Y-Wings had red but that was changed due to blue screen problems.

    Really great video and awesome build, one question, is the gray por the frontal part of the fuselage different from the rest?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. :) Yes I used White Grey for the "head" section and engine caps, and a light grey for the rest. The reason is that the original Y-Wing design should be all covered up with plating, but the rebels left the body exposed to make it easier to maintain or something, that's why there's a slight colour difference.

      They can seem like it, have you looked at the cheapest options? The one I'm using now was the cheapest compressor/airbrush combo I could find online, all up it cost me about NZ$200, which is the cost of a couple of good model tanks.

    @migueladolforomeroblanco7659 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great! I feel like making a lot of comments and questions, not all to you, but alas: first, the Y-wing was alwys my favorite; sure, the X-wing looks cooler, with those opening or folding so called "wings" -no aerodynamic work to do, so they are more pylons, may be?- but the cockpit, or "head" area, got me from the first time (yes, I watched it in cinema when it was fresh new. No, that wasn't 1977, because I lived in spain and the movie arrived like the next year. Still...)
    Second, I don't get why they don't include a glass for the cockpit. I "assembled" -you don't want to see that mess- a version at a lower scale, the hatcht -if ti is a hacht, and however that is spelled! (yes, english is my second language. No, it wont be the only issue about it in this texte, if I manage to wirte everything that I want) I don't see why, a much larger model, with so much quality of detail, shouldn't carry glass pieces. Sure, ModelChili would be right to tell me: "Hey, I didn't desing the model, just assembled it! You need to address Bandai"
    Yes. But still... :(
    Third: Err... I appreciate the originality of changing the decoration -something that I do all the time, or I did when -sigh- I could dedicate to model kits. But, as the former die hard Warie that I was -and you know what happens with former flames- I have to protest this time! The red squadron in the battle of Yavin was mde ONLY of X-wings! It would have been confusing, and risky, to have mixed ships in each squadron, with different velocities, manoubrabilities and other capabilities!
    Yes, time to tell me: "Go to sleep, seven years old in the body of a 45 lazy %&$"/°!" Sorry. ;)
    Forth: Now, man you are the MASTER you keep assembling very complex models al together before you paint them, and YOU KEEP PAINTING AL THE LITTLE, F***** DETAILS WITH NO PROBLEMS!!! I most deffinitively missed that memo.
    Fifth: Wow, I don't get it; you painted a beautiful detail in the front of the engines, just to cover it with the domes? I apologize in advance if it is rude, but I don't see the point on making a very nice job justo to render it out of sight. Well, maybe since you don't use glue in these models, it is not an issue.
    Sixth: Another laudatory message. Tell me the secret, let's be honest: do you use putty when the camera isn't recording? It is okey if those are "snap and (I forgot the other word) models which don't require glue, and I caan accept that the japanese can do very good jobs, but I DON'T SEE ANY F#"%$& SEAMS IN THAT MODEL!!!! Well, may be it is my limited english earing ability. do you remember that I mentioned english was my second language? I do much better reading than listening. Don't worry, Mr. Chili; you can't please all the audiencies.
    Eight (I hope you aren't bored for the live at this point): When I was trying to be a modeller, I wasn't the best or the most careful, so there were things which I never even attempted, and using those basic covers of painto to fix better the final, real paint was one (I guess I could have done aa better job that way, but alas; it is too late now). I can understand that painture gets better to the surface with a base below, but what I don't get is why you use THREE of them: grey, black, and grey. Is the final grey the begining of the final painture? Is the first grey THE base, nd the black is to help mke more visible the details? Mistery for me...
    Ninth (and last; I promise): The final look of the ship is awesome, but I think it could be improved, if you can take a sugstion from an ignorant, if the base of the model were also painted. When I write here "base", i mean the... english for "pedestal"? of the model. It -the base or pedestal- is obviously model to resemble some kind of artificial structure, which makes me think inmediately on any of the Death Stars that the rebels duly destroyed -and which reinforces my third point here; at least, from my point of view- and here is the thing: if the base resembled just a transparent star, as I remember for the Revell X-wing, it could remain transparent and still look at the proper level with the rest of the magnificent model. Instead, being an artificial structure, and having on top such a great modelistic work, could you consider to put at least shadows and the like in the base? Let's say those were my two cents. Great work all the same!

      Correction, the X-wing model wasn't Revell but ILM.

      And, as a matter of fact, I forgot two comments! The first, I wonder why the pylons holding the thrust vecitorizing plates, or what ever are what the circles at the end of the engines hold, are not darkened by the heated exhaust gases. The second, that R2-D2 dome looks amazing!!!

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! It really depends, sometimes it can be easier to paint before assembly, sometimes it's easier to paint after assembly. For the Y-Wing it's easier to build some of the sub assemblies first before painting, like I did here. :)
