    Phenomenal job, and watching your videos is so calm and soothing as if I were watching the old Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood. Plus, thanks to your videos and watching your techniques, I built and painted one hell of a nice looking USS Voyager. This same kit of the Falcon is next.

    That looks fantastic. When I was a young model builder the only reference I could was from model builder magazines, I didn’t have TH-cam let alone the internet to turn to. Now you’ve got me wanting to get back into the hobby.

    The bandai kits are by far the most detailed kits I have ever seen I have done the mini X wing and AT imperial walker as well as I got the R2D2 BB8 kit which I n thought were absolutely beautiful pieces..Very intricate....I got the RISE OF SKYWALKER falcon yesterday and when I opened the box I was taken back by the intricacy of the pieces..Detail to an extreme Especially for the size of it.Should be for a 70$ model.( I got on sale for 41$ ). HONESTLY if they had 2 I would have got them both...Also watching videos like yours opened me up to a whole new world of washes and streaking. I knew what washes are and use them in my dioramas but I make my own..The streaking I never heard of. I do believe I am going to use the MIG AMMO STARSHIP washes and streaking..I watched another video of bother DEATHSTAR BATTLE SCENE KIT and the results on the X wings were just astonishing. Nice to know of other products though for sure. Don't have much up here where I am in Massachusetts.All in all a great job done here..Very informative and helpful..

    If you ever want to repaint the model it can be taken apart fully & redone :) God bless Bandai for making us these super nice Star Wars kits

    One step you might've been able to skip is the initial light gray primer and then black basecoat. Tamiya and Mr. Hobby both sell a BLACK primer in a spray can. I use Mr. Finishing Surfacer 1500 Black for things that need a dark base, gray for light base.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm usually stuck with what I find at my local hobby shop. I never knew Tamiya did a black primer, that would definitely help!

    I was mad about plastic aircraft kits from a young age...I'm 51 now and have just built a 1:144 AT-AT by Bandai. I can't believe how well the kit pressed together. I'm am keen on this kit as well, but they are just talking about a huge almost movie accurate MF which has my mind racing a bit (mostly about what I could sell to afford it!). Anyway, great video, and I wish I had half the painting skills you do. Thanks for the upload 👌

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! Yeah the Bandai kits make modelling so much fun, they're extremely well designed and engineers. This Falcon kit isn't too expensive if you hunt around on eBay and find a Japanese seller, that's where I get most of my Bandai kits.

  • @axelfoley1768

    Nice bro, very nice! I'm not a modeller myself, but I have done Fighter Aircraft like the F14 Tomcat etc in my younger years, although I never knew how to do the paintwork, so I just relied on the decals and standard colouring of the kit for it's final look.
    However, I am a massive Star Wars fan, and your finished product looks good, real good. I was worried at first, but that was just the earlier stages when you were layering it. The final job is great.
    I checked-out a few other vids here on TH-cam from experts doing the same kit, and for all the expertise and meticulous attention-to-detail they did, I have to say that yours looks better than all theirs, more realistic yours is. You didn't try to overdo it, you just kept it simple but with good finesse in applying the paint/shadings/weathering etc. Final result is very cool indeed. It appears you are up there with the best. Takes a Kiwi to get the job done, I love the Kiwis, they kick ass. Keep-up the good work bro.

    Really enjoy your videos and tutorials, and I learn a lot too. One thing I did think whether you might have considered. The Falcon looked sooo good in black. Have you thought about doing a ‘mirror universe’ type paint effect where the Falcon is black and use the opposite colours that you use for the ‘normal Falcon’ to create shading/depth etc. So instead of light grey over black, do black over grey. And use white wash to create detail weathering on the black Falcon instead of black wash on the light grey. Think that could be fun. Great stuff to watch though. Thank you

  • @thepreacher88

    I'm not one for commenting on TH-cam videos but I like the way you go through the kits and talk about them helps in deciding if there worth the time (I've just started getting back in to scale modelling after doing table top) just as aside note most people don't know that the under side of the force awakens MF has the tumbler from batman dark knight rises inlayed into the pipes and gaps in the panelling as the 2 films were filmed very close together and the crews where in eye shot of each other so JJ decided to add it in and release a trailer showing this ( I found this in the imdb trailer back before the film was released) I bet Bandai missed that on this model though

    A nice model. it always struck me as odd that the black stains from the circular engine ports go center to center rather than along the center line of the ship which would be the flow line of the air over the ship.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      john tailby Thanks :) Yeah it does seem a bit odd, I like to think of the ports venting out exhaust in those angles even in space, so it has less to do with the airflow and more to do with how ports are aligned. That's my theory anyway. :)

  • @jamesmcallister965
    @jamesmcallister965 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

  • @LokiJotunn
    @LokiJotunn 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work, my only thoughts on building one of these is when it comes to painting the engine exhaust fume stains I think the painting guide is kind of messed up. The exhaust fume stains would run pretty much parallel with each other and not at different angles. Basic principles of air flow in atompheric flight would cause the fumes to travel in the same general direction and given that there's no atmosphere in space they could only have been created in atmospheric flight.
    I'd paint the rear exhaust fume stains running parallel personally but that's just my personal choice, it doesn't detract from the great job you did.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers! I always assumed each exhaust blew out fumes in the same alignment as the vents instead of being caused by airflow. That's my interpretation! Either way, that's how it looks on the studio model.

    Hi, congratulations for the excelent work! The final model is very good and looks just like the movie. A few questions...maybe because my english is not so good I can't understand how you make the effect on the decals with the sponge...what did you put on it? And it seems that you put 4 paint layers right? Nato black, light grey, and finally white grey but it looks like there was another...what color did you use in that first one? Dark grey? What did you put on the blast marks? Best regards!

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! No problem I'll try to answer as best I can... There were 4 paint layers yes, the first was light grey primer, then NATO Black for the shadow coat, then Light Grey, then White Grey was the top coat. I don't show the first primer layer because it's from a spray can that I apply out in the garage. The sponge was just dipped in White Grey, then wiped away (so make it a thin layer) then dabbed in the appropriate places. I have a tutorial on this here: th-cam.com/video/pL63ztXjnm4/w-d-xo.html And the blast marks were done by spraying a small amount of black from an airbrush and then just using a bit of dry brushing to make some streaks. Hope that helps. :)

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use Vallejo acrylics, the Model Air range is best for airbrushes. For brushes I just pick any old cheap brand up from my local stationery store, they're all different brands. Vallejo White Grey was used for the base colour for the Falcon, anything else I'd have to go back over the video and check lol. I'm thinking of setting up a site where I can post all my builds and list all the paints and products used, but it just takes a bit of time and effort.

    Taking into account that the plastic of the model is colored, I am thinking of applying the stickers, then a semi-gloss layer and go directly to weathering, what do you think?
    P.S. Are the stickers still stuck on your model after all these years?
    Great video, greetings !!

    very good build, but i am sure that the soot from the back vents would just stick to the hull in a straight line, and not in the radial fashion you went for ( he says nonchalantingly while turning his back to the dozen of poorly weatered gundams on his shelf)

      Wonder what were tey thinking, maybe that it would drip down when the millennium is on the ground? Guess realism and fidelity to the source can't alaways get along.

    • @modelchili

      I think the vents just shoot out at certain angles in space, causing the weathering.

    • @georgemorley1029

      ModelChili Scale Models I don’t think it happens in space, I think it’s soot that comes out of the heat exhaust vents on the ground.

    Awesome demonstration. Inspired me to get back into modeling. I about to start my model this weekend. Just need a bit of clarity. I see you applied grey primer, nato black, Light Grey then Grey White. Did you apply a light gloss coat then stickers and another layer of gloss coat, then weathering? I know this was done a few years ago but hoping you might remember. Thanks in advance.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I always apply a gloss coat before applying decals (and stickers in this case), it helps them apply better. Then another gloss coat on top, which protects the decals and makes it easier to apply a wash for weathering.

      ModelChili Scale Models Thank you. But I dont understand why you paint it grey then black after applying the last color.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The first coat is the primer, it just happens to be grey. It's lacquer based and sticks to plastic really well, so that's my base coat. The black layer is just for shading. I cover the entire model in black, getting into all the recessed areas and panel lines, so then when I do a lighter white grey top coat, the deeper areas still show through as black which adds to the impression of depth and detail. Hope that helps!

    i have always wondered about the 6 round shapes on the back.
    everybody weathers it the same way you did, like the movie, but those are supposed to be solar panels.
    what kind of soot comes out of a solar panel?
    and, lol, what can account for that streaking pattern? each one with it's own direction?
    surely the falcon only flies in 1 direction at once?
    their non-parallel direction defies the laws of physics...

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're actually grill vents, you can see through them even on the studio model. The streaking pattern comes out whichever way it's blown out. Each vent is aligned with the streaking pattern.

    FYI on the silhouette "figure"... it's not Bandai cheapening out, but Disney flexing their greed muscles again. A stand alone model figure is still considered an "action figure", and is covered by a different license. So Bandai had to switch to the silly-ette or pay more money to Disney. :( I'm just glad and surprised they are still able to include the pilots. I guess they're molded in shape and therefore not action figures.

    • @bluray7358
      @bluray7358 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ehhh I don't know if its that, (It entirely could be) but Bandai have been using tiny little sitting figures like that for Gunpla for a loooong time now in the Master Grade 1/100 line. Once they brought out the Real Grade 1/144 line they also included 1/144 scale pilot figures. So its likely that they are just using the same methods they use on their gundam model kits

  • @DaveRessler

    Great work on this and all your other Bandai kits! I've been using them as tutorials for building my own. One issue i've run into with Vallejo washes over a cured layer of Future for sealing, using water + cotton swab doesn't seem to remove much or any. Not sure if you use Future (I forgot if I heard it) but maybe it's an issue with that type of clear coat?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Glad they're helpful. :) Yeah we don't have Future here (not sure what a suitable alternative is) so I just use Tamiya Clear from a spray can for the gloss coat. I have noticed that applying the wash to a flat coat makes it a lot harder to remove, but on the gloss it just wipes right off, it's probably to do with how smooth the surface is on a microscopic level.

    • @cboyd1976
      @cboyd1976 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Ressler acrylic wash like Vallejo model wash needs to be applied over enamel/laquer paint. Rattle can clears are all laquer based so acrylic wash works great. Future is an acrylic clear so you need to use an oil paint based wash when using future as your clear coat. look up "fichtenfoo millenium falcon" for a great guide on oil washes.

    Beautiful work! I did some model building when I was a kid, but I'm ready to pick it back up more seriously. I've really enjoyed your videos and learned a lot. For this particular model you used stickers for a lot of the colored panels. Did you have any issues with the stickers peeling off when you used the various washes? Also, I'm shopping around for an air brush. Do you have any recommendations?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always apply a gloss coat over everything before applying the wash so didn't have any issue with the stickers. Yeah I always recommend just finding the cheapest compressor/airbrush combo you can find when starting out. That's what I did and I still use it years later. :)

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. :) Yes I mostly use Vallejo products, mainly because they're in big supply at my local hobby store, they're water based and smell nice. And yes all my washes are Vallejo, I used Light Grey for the main wash, and Oil Stains and Black for some of the detailed work. It's all up to personal preference though, I've done a bit of experimenting over the months before settling on those, it's always worth trying out a few products.

    I highly recommend that anyone building this beautiful Bandai Millennium Falcon, or for that matter any Star Wars ships should go and take a look at the Discoloration Weathering Tutorial series from FichtenFoo at this link- th-cam.com/video/wreblsPaUhU/w-d-xo.html It's a 6 part Tutorial series(each very short) that I promise you will be a technique you will want to use on certainly any Star Wars models, as well as many others! It's really that good, and a VERY easy technique that anyone, beginner to seasoned veteran can not only pull of, but will dramatically improve the look of your finished model. By the way, he is the same guy that started the model company "Industrial Mechanica" which produces amazing resin kits that are truly works of art themselves.

  • @2Xj372
    @2Xj372 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    So you put gloss coat on the model to protect the decals and stickers when you wash it right?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      River Chiang Yes :) It also stops the wash absorbing into the paint which can alter the colours.

    • @2Xj372
      @2Xj372 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ModelChili Scale Models I use Mr.hobby semi gloss and flat. I save the flat for the very last, and it's my first time trying out your technique. Is there a specific amount I can give judgment to whether the semi gloss is enough to protect the decals and my paints?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      River Chiang Once the gloss is dry, try adding a bit of wash or acrylic paint and if it can easily be removed with water or thinner without affecting the paint underneath, then it should be thick enough.

    Hi, very informative video, I'm going to be using it as a guide soon.
    One question: What did you do about the clear part for the thrusters, the big blue one? Was it inside the model the whole time you were painting it or was it masked or did you simply put it in later?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! Hope you find it useful. :)
      I didn't actually put in the clear thruster part. Since I didn't light it, you wouldn't see it anyway, so I just used the grill at the back, which is essentially empty.

    • @Zaekr2111
      @Zaekr2111 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Is it easy enough to take it apart to put in the blue piece late on?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm from what I remember it might be a bit difficult. The two clamshells that form the body click into place pretty tightly and you might risk breaking the plastic trying to pull them apart.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers! Yeah it is gravity fed. It doesn't really have a brand, it was literally the cheapest most basic one I could find on the internet lol, but two years later I'm still using it. I've had to swap out the airbrush a couple of times, but the compressor is still going strong. I'd recommend doing the same if you're starting out. I paid about NZ$200 for my airbrush/compressor combo, which isn't much to get started.
