    I look at the A-wing and all I can think is "this was built from an F-14 model kit!"
    Seriously, the body of the A-wing is LITERALLY the middle section of an F-14! It's the forward half of the glove area that contained the F-14's variable sweep wings.
    The front prongs of the A-wing are crafted from the top of the F-14's engine inlets, too.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's pretty funny. The torpedo tubes are the slots for the F-14's winglets.

    A quick note of the Vallejo Primer: I've used this stuff extensively, both for model kits and for miniatures, which has given me some familiarity with it. If you wait roughly 24 hours (give or take) for it to cure completely, it can be sanded; the key though is that curing time. If you try to sand it before that, yeah, it tends to peel off in strips and chunks. Its nice if you have the time to let it cure thoroughly, but if its a project you want to get to right away it can be a bit of a pain.
    Also, something else that should be said about this stuff; in most Vallejo paints people tend to put some sort of non-metal bead in for an agitator which is usually fine, except apparently with the primer. There's another channel I'm subscribed to, Dr Faust's Painting Clinic, where in a video he shows that somehow even a glass bead managed to cause some sort of corrosion, contaminating his white surface primer in the process. I've no idea how it manages to do this, but just a heads up for anyone thinking about adding some sort of agitator to the Vallejo Surface Primer.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the info! I might give the Vallejo primer another try, but I'm really happy with how the Tamiya Surface Primer performs for the moment, even if it is a bit more expensive.

    Enjoyed the video and the build. As far as the issue of scale is concerned for the pilot, of course, I can no longer remember the source, but I heard an interview with, I think Adam Savage, where he said the photographic model was built with an oversized pilot figure to make it more noticeable for photographic purposes. The pilot in the filming model was not to scale with the ship.

  • @krashkow
    @krashkow 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    On the issue with scale of the pilot figure: Bandai likely scaled the pilot to the current official canon measurements of the A-Wing starfighter, which has a length of 9.6 meters. The official sizes of Star Wars ships were not firmly established until West End Games started making the Star Wars role playing game, starting in 1987. Some of the sizes WEG established don't exactly square with the studio models, but they are what has become canon (with one notable exception being the Super Star Destroyer, which WEG pegged at 5km long, but has more recently been re-revised to being 19km long, due to the fact that it's gargantuan screen presence in ESB puts it well beyond 5km in length if measured against the established 1.6km length of the regular Imperial Star Destroyer).

    • @Neitenth
      @Neitenth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      krashkow The real problem is that the official size is wrong. Even if you ignore pilot size its size relative to other ships in RotJ puts it at 15 feet long.

    • @Neitenth
      @Neitenth 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's also a full-size prop of a newer A-Wing in The Last Jedi and it's nowhere near 10 meters.

    • @k-874
      @k-874 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's weird... We see the A-wings in the movies and you can clearly see the pilot can barely even fit in the cockpit yet the official stats and numbers makes it a little bigger

It has the back section of the X-Wing molded in to it. You can see it at 15:58, in the upper quadrant, to the right of the dividing line. Thanks for your wonderful videos.

    I think I missed the grey you used for the tower? Is it just a stock medium grey? IIRC you used Ghost Grey as the shadow colour on your Death Star models, but it was a lot smaller. Also, did you use White Grey as the base white for all your Bandai Star Wars fliers? (Star Destroyer, Snowspeeder, Falcon, Slave-I) Keep up the good work!

    Chili..Is there anyway that You could show all the paints and weathering products that You used at the end of the video. I noticed that You did that with the Republic Star Destroyer video. It helps Us novices in choosing paint schemes and such. I try to match up the same paints that You used. I find Myself with pen and paper taking notes throughout the video. But a nice recap of products used at the end would be very helpful. Just an idea for future videos.

I'll keep doing an overview at the end, my fear is that a lot of people may have dropped out by then, ah well then they miss out. :)

      ModelChili Scale Models you can always keep track of what you use and when you upload the video you can list it in the description? I've been wondering also

    • @lt_walke4088
      @lt_walke4088 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@modelchili you could also just make a statement to the fact that you will list all additional paints and materials used at the end of the video and if need be as you point to the paint you can even flash to where the colour is. Have you ever thought of doing some 101 quick videos? how to black wash your model to be successful? start with a ship that is already painted to that stage and seal it wash it then remove excess then reseal it with the dull coat kind of thing.
      Also I realize you work with airbrushed mostly but do you have tips for those of us relegated to brush (and summer aerosol outdoor spraying) due to wives not liking airbrush smell and compressor noise?

  • @TheHongKongHermit
    @TheHongKongHermit 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is a really lovely video. Nice and relaxed, shows off your process very well. Loved seeing it all come together at the end. Have you considered adding a slight bit of weathering to the turbolaser tower? At the risk of detracting from the A-wing itself, the tower paintjob looks a little flat right now. Mostly because it's right next to that exquisite paint job on the starfighter.
    Definitely going to check out more of your videos. Very soothing stuff.

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, really appreciate it. :) Yes the simple tower is intentional, like you say it probably would detract from the A-Wing and I just treated it like a stand really. If I had a diorama in mind I probably would have detailed it a bit more.

      They have a 1/144 scale trench diorama out now.
      Just a shout-out if you want to avoid doing some extra work.
      Really, the 1/144 scale is probably the way to go for space and cost considerations. They're selling up to three TIE's (Vader plus two wingmen) in a kit and Y-wings and X-wings in pairs in some cases I believe.
      The space those 1/72 kits are going take up builds up quickly. The 1/144aren't as nice close up but from a distance they can still come off well if you're careful with the painting.

    Really great video, thank you for sharing. I would appreciate your advice, I've been trying to prime my white pieces in Stynylrez gray, and then paint them with Vallejo's model air white. How did you get your coat so nice and clean? I keep having gray patches in mine, and I'm worried I'll overspray and end up ruining the panel lines and rivets. would appreciate any help you can offer!

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always found Model Air White to be a bit tricky, it's quite thin and you need to take a lot of care when spraying. For the A-Wing I actually used Model Air White Grey, which is a lot more forgiving.

  • @dbroadwayvfx
    @dbroadwayvfx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I bought Vallejo Model Air White Grey because I wanted to try it out after seeing it on this video. I sprayed it down just as you did, but I got horrible orange peel. However, after about 12 hours the orange peel smoothed out to a good coat. But then when I put the second coat on, I got orange peel again, but it didn't smooth out as nicely. Did your paint go down smooth? Maybe I have a bad batch?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm I've never had that happen with my Vallejo paints. I sometimes get it when spraying too much clear coat from the Tamiya spray cans. Maybe you put a bit too much paint on in one go?

      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've used the same colour on the Y-Wing, Slave 1 and Falcon kits and it all went down fine. It's a shame you seem to be having bad luck with it! I've found that problems can be really tricky to pin down, there's so many factors that could influence the result, and as you say, it might just be a bad batch.

    Chili! I finished painting and have just put on the gloss clear coat! I have a question about the wash. When you put the wash on the A-Wing did you let it air dry or did you use a paper towel?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! With the Vallejo washes I always let them dry enough so handling them doesn't smudge it up. Then I use water or a bit of acrylic thinner to wipe it down. I imagine enamel based washes would be a bit different.

    Hey ModelChili, using your video as a guide to paint my A-Wing. You know how this kit has a nasty gate mark right on the side of the canopy? I sanded the area down and polished it back to clear sheen. Weeks later, though, that portion of the canopy got cloudy. How did you prevent this from happening with yours? I'm thinking a clear coat on the canopy will help?

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I just left it on mine, so can't really help you there sorry. Maybe try repolishing?

    • @lon242
      @lon242 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, will try to get it polished and clear again, and then lay a clear top coat on top, to prevent the plastic from "oxidizing" / getting fuzzy again. Hopefully that'll do it.
      Thanks and keep up the great vids. I was looking to build a Space Battleship Yamato as well, looking forward to checking your build out.

    I don't believe you covered it in your video but how did you paint or color the clear engine thrusters that are inside the two thruster assemblies? Thanks!

    • @modelchili
      @modelchili  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just brush painted those with Tamiya clear yellow acrylic, they're small enough that the brush strokes don't really show up.

      Tommy Lakasi I haven't built the Resistance X-Wing so can't really say. I'd guess this has fewer parts.
