@@arabmunnywhen sakurai added marth he wanted to pad the numbers out. So he made clone characters. And he saw that a new fire emblem game was being made and looked at the main character roy, and thought that he would be perfect in smash. But due to a rough development Binding Blade released in 2002. A year after melee. So technically speaking, roy is the only character that originated in smash
Roy is an absolute BEAST in Ultimate, and not only that, his English VA Ray Chase does a phenomenal job voicing him (most notably with his Star KO scream, which is perhaps a bit TOO realistic-sounding for a game like this). Overall, he got done so good in Ultimate!
Ray Chase as Roy is amazing, also thanks to him voicing Roy he voices my main in two different fighting games I play, which honestly makes it even cooler for me personally
Damn Honest you really come a long way, love these videos recently. You really hitting your stride. Kinda like Roy did in Ultimate (see what i did there), ok nvm
Honestly even though melee roy is a player dependent and potential character. He’s like mid high or low top tier. Unlike Marth who’s a top top tier. Smash for Wii U and 3DS He’s a mid high for me not good not bad Ultimate he’s a tank with a sword.
Thank you for the content, I enjoy watching your videos and admire your confidence (you speak directly to the camera like a presentation). I usually never put compliments in the comment section, so hope this helps the algorithm.
It's been almost a WHOLE decade, and Undertale OST still brings me the same emotions I got when I first played the game. Nothing can be so affective and meaningful than those memories.
Roy was my favorite character to play in Melee. I loved fighting people on tiny stages like Yoshi's Story and Super Flat Zone and just wiggling the C-stick to knock anyone who came anywhere near me into the blast zone. I loved overcharging the explosion sword and hurting myself. I loved all the palettes other than his default color, not sure if green or gold was my absolute favorite but the only one I didn't care for was blue armor with purple cape.
I love Roy, but I'm not gonna lie to you. If there's an alternate universe where Sakurai put Leif in Melee instead, it would be a better world. The best Fire Emblem Lord wouldn't be so underrated.
Yes I can in fact confirm when I was 7 both me and the rich friend with a game cube both wanted roy over marth cause fire AND we thought only one of us could play roy at a time so it became a fighting point who would play the boy
Terrible in Melee and 4 due to poor approach options combined with an absolute need to approach as well as being terrible combo food in two games where and a goddamn beast in Ultimate where he got buffed to high heaven and is able to take advantage of SSBU's new mechanics that seem almost tailor made to fix Roy's biggest problems Now he's a super fast, super strong combo character that can literally combo you once and then destroy you off a single whiff punish. One of the biggest glowups of smash history this side of Smash 4 Mewtwo
Roy may not be the best in his own series, but He will always be the best Lord to me, I hope one day when there is a Binding Blade remake, that they give him more development, mostly sticking to what Sakurai had in mind for him and what his design reflects!
Same, as a kid i didnt even see his flaws, (now i definitely do😵💫😵), all i saw was the coolest character in the game and i loved him i still do idc. Melee roy might suck but he will always be my favorite, hes my boy😉
Absolutely love what they did to Roy in Ultimate. I tried playing him in Smash 4, but he didn't do well enough against the meta at all, so I just used Lucina instead. In Ultimate, though, he still has big flaws, but he's actually really fucking good, egen if the public definitely overrates him
I always loved Roy since i first played melee as a kid. I just thought he was so cool (and cute🤭) i didnt care abt his flaws actually i didnt see a lot of them i just saw him as my favorite character. I always lost to my brother, a marth😡, but hey🤷♂️. I was upset when he was taken out of brawl n i didnt care for ike. I was happy he was in smash 4 but he still hadnt reached his potential and i knew it. FINALLY hes in ultimate and HES GOOD! Hes good!🙏🔥ppl dont understand how much he deserves it he sucked for YEARS, forgotten in brawl, always overshadowed by other swordies. So yes he deserves everything he got in ultimate and he BETTER be in the next game when that comes out in 2027 idk who knows. Basically in conclusion, ROYS OUR BOY🗣️🔥💯💯
Melee: Roy Has elements that are banned, but low speed against Marth leaves him behind, and his range was ridiculously low for a swordsman. Brawl: The character was removed to bring Ike, but in the code plus the mods Roy had good tools but difficult to use. Sm4sh: It is a Low Level Mid Tier, but the buffs are evident but it still retains the weaknesses of Melee, its range was slightly improved but its Neutral Special made it super predictable. Ultimate: I still think he is Top Tier, since he is capable of giving problems to Steve, Aegis, Kazuya, Rob, but he has problems against Sonic and Joker, but he still has good options.
While this version of Roy is incredible in how he's fast and strong, I kinda wanna see how Roy's whole "fast and strong sword character" trait compares to another character with that same trait but split into two characters as one, being the Aegis. I've seen this version of Roy be seen a combination of both Pyra and Mythra before they were added in Ultimate on March 4, 2021. (as we're getting close to that three year milestone as the announcement is exactly one month away from now!). And thank god we got this version of Roy and unlike Marth, he didn't lose his Japanese Voice should you switch your game's language to Japanese!
While I do love Roy being very much a clone of Marth for lore reasons, I do like Smash finding ways to deviate Roy into being more of his own fighter instead of being just Worst Marth Sure hope they continue that way of evolving movesets of clone characters in future titles
I always liked Roy in Smash because of his fire sword, his red hair and especially his hothead, aggressive and energetic personality. The latter of which isn't even present in his own game or series at all.
As someone who loves roy, ive always heard this and kinda avoided learning about his game bcuz i dont want the perfect image i have of him to be ruined. I know hes kind of a weakling until the end of the game where he becomes op but thats about it. I know he canonically gets bitches tho, so thats fire
Everyone knows Zain's legendary Donttestme run, and how Roy is amazing is Smash Ultimate, but I just want to highlight this set from Smash 4 that didn't have that much high-level Roy representation th-cam.com/video/pab_TgyQCBE/w-d-xo.html
If we were talking about Roy in FE6 he is pretty much a copy of Marth in his own game, a lot of characters in Fe6 are actually very similar to shadow dragon its kinda ironic. Life imitates art.
Melee Roy was an unfinished mess, still my favorite though. Smash 4 Roy had a lot of potential, and he's very underrated in my opinion. Smash Ultimate Roy go unga bunga.
Me personally, I always thought he’s closer to high tier than low tier in 4. Towards the end of the meta he’s been actually getting decent results and has a really high player base in the Mexico scene. He’s not Ultimate Roy who’s like top 5-10 but I’d say he’s a legitimately solid character.
I genuinely hope in future smash games they totally rethink the fire emblem characters they include. It seems like people overlook how difficult it is to pick out characters as reps from those games, considering protagonists are often one-and-done. These protagonists also tend to have similar mechanics, where the rest of the cast represent such a wide breadth of character archtypes, specialties, and gameplay strategies. While the number of characters currently included is bloated, I would argue that this might be 2 slots. However, what characters are included should represent more significantly varying movelists. This might be too much, but i feel like a better way to represent several similar characters would be with alt costumes over wearing out people who have literally no clue or interest when they could just show cool shit

By technicality, Roy is the only smash bros original character in the roster. He is THE super smash brother

I'll never forget how hyped I was seeing Roy return in Smash 4! I definitely like his Smash 4 and Ultimate moveset.

"Hold Out" you say? How very Roy like 😊
Short answer:
Melee: Bad
Smash 4: Mid Tier
Ultimate: Top Tier
Honestly even though melee roy is a player dependent and potential character. He’s like mid high or low top tier. Unlike Marth who’s a top top tier.
Smash for Wii U and 3DS He’s a mid high for me not good not bad
Ultimate he’s a tank with a sword.
More great honest content Zach! Roy had a huge glow up over the years for sure!
Competitive Roy is essentially a Pokemon evolution, each evolution making him stronger and more viable
What about Meta Knight then?
Ironic how the Guy who lived in Marth’s shadow back in melee is now on the Opposite end in Ultimate.

Roy in Melee always made me think of Little Mac in the later games.

Love ur content ma. Keep it up
Great Video!

I still want him in smash
Marth was actually considered for the first game due to his popularity, but got cut due to time constraints.
I see why he is better in ultimate now compared to Wii U. Great informative video :)

HOW DO YOU MAKE THESE SO FAST?!?!!? NEARLY AS GOOOD AS ASUMSAUS BUT WITH 100X THE UPLOAD SPEED?!?!
Roy destroying Marth is kinda ironic.

Mario and Pokemon have 8 characters each, people still want more for them, and FE is insanely popular in Japan. I think FE deserves the slots
