Can consciousness be explained *without* materialism?
I have never heard someone attempt to do so with any kind of consistent logic; there just seems to be the acceptance that “spirit,” or whatever, is an explanation. It is not. An explanation makes something clearer by using something we already understand, and nobody has shown that they understand spirits - they just make claims

Some Non-dualist thought argues that everything is consciousness and is only not clear to western ears because we already presuppose materialism. It took me a while of many conversations to kind of grasp the concept and my only objection is that it’s unfalsifiable, which is only a problem if you presuppose materialism and the scientific method.
I’m not convinced btw, I’m just trying to steal-man the position.

@@DeepDrinks Unfalsifiability should be a problem regardless of materialism.
I was thinking specifically of the consciousness-only concept when I wrote my post. It does not explain why things work the way they do.
For example, the development of the mind with the brain over time (age of person) and in relation to the health of the brain (surgery, brain damage, etc).
Consciousness-only doesn’t explain the need for sleep, nor the lack of consciousness while we sleep.
It doesn’t explain why there are varying levels of consciousness with varying brain complexity, e.g. comparing chimpanzees to dogs to humans.
*There is no apparent reason for a consciousness-only setting to even have brains or the concept of a material world.*
Why can’t two “Consciousnesses” communicate without the material world?
One defender wrote that the experience of tone and space happens within the consciousness, but that does not explain to me why consciousness has physical location - from all perspectives. I can tell you there are rainbows and unicorns on the other side of the door, but if it’s a door to a port-a-potty, you’ll see the same shit that I did.
