Excellent advice here. I'm replacing the R molding on my wife's truck. Came loose after a car wash. I don't understand why Toyota does not glue them down in the factory...oh wait. They want us to buy more parts!
Yep...My drip molding (long piece) comes off every time I go through the car wash. Putting it back in the track is just part of my "post wash" routine now...LOL. I've been considering using the double sided tape as well. Thanks for the tip!
Of course! I would say after having mine on for a few years, I would suggest using something more permanent than the double sided tape, it seems to be losing its grip over time.
Mine rood molding was loose but I caught in time before it fell off. I used 3M red tape which designed for outdoor body emblems which holds up very well for my roof moldings. I think the molding loosens up from all the vibration from the vehicle. I also feel that people who lost their molding in car wash. The molding was loose prior to the car wash and during the process the molding came off. Rarely does any one wax their car roof to check the roof molding.
Great video I just got a 22 trd sport that came with the roof racks. I've been trying to like them but I don't. So I'm doing the same thing. Your video is just what I've been looking for. PS I have a pair of roof racks for sale
Awesome, I would definitely go with a combination of tape and adhesive, just in case one fails over time. I wish these were designed better so they wouldn't come loose!
How hard was it to get the bolts off to remove the roof rack? I have read that they use red thread lock and you have to heat the bolts with a torch to loosen the red threadlock. Did you have to do all that or just remove the bolts?
Oh yeah, those things were a total PITA. Red thread lock was present and made them extremely difficult to remove. I actually stripped one and had to drill it out. Not easy at all!
I just installed a factory roof rack on my Tacoma. Keeping the moldings in case I would ever want to reinstall them. Didn't want to have to search for them or pay the ridiculous price dealer would want for a set.
I'm so sorry, I don't have the part number. I actually traded for these drip molding pieces when I sold my stock rack. It should be available on the Toyota website though.
Good question! I actually think the stock racks have a pretty good design, I like the way you can fold the crossbars out of the way when you are not using it. I just didn't like the aesthetics...I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I have Yakima bars on there now, and I really like the way they look, plus there are so many useful attachments that are available.
@@joshuabeiswenger2141 I didn't need to get the silicone out (luckily) because the Yakima racks don't use the holes to mount....they clamp onto the area of the roof on the door frame.
It looks like you have a GX in the background. If it's yours, did you notice if the rain guards are the same shape for both (not length obviously, but does the channel fitment look the same?
i noticed on my 07 4runner that the molding was coming up near the windshield, then water started to drip into the cap slowly. Would this possibly fix the problem or is that a windshield issue? Thanks
I'm not sure if a new molding would fix the problem...is it leaking into the cab of your 4Runner? If so, it might be a windshield seal, if not, probably just the molding. I would try to glue down the old seal if possible, the new ones are so expensive, and from what I hear, not going to fix the problem of what seems to be a design flaw on these things.
Hey man! Great video. Just noticed right molding is loosen on my wife's 4runner. Will fix soon. But my question is outside of your video's subject. What kind of watch are you wearing? If you don't mind. Thanks in advance!
Thanks, I love this watch! It is a Garmin Instinct. I've had a couple of smartwatches, and none of them have held up to the abuse I throw at it...this Garmin has had no problem. I highly recommend it!
Thanks man!!! Nice watch!!! I'll read reviews about them. I'm kind of between two choices: Garmin or Amazfit T-Rex Pro. I'll make my decision soon. Thanks for replying!!!
I would try to get used ones from someone that is going to put on stock racks...they are OEM and good quality if they are stock. New ones from the dealer are soooo expensive!
Hey Mark, usually the right side of the car is passenger....it is determined by the thought that you are sitting in the drivers seat, facing forward. I know it is somewhat confusing! You may want to reach out to whoever you are buying the part from to make sure. Cheers!
Toyota should issue a safety recall on these, had one side fly off on the highway narrowly missing a car behind me who had to swerve to avoid it. Poor thinking on Toyotas behalf
That's exactly what mine did on my '07. Saw something black flying around in my mirror and watched the drip moulding go flying. Thought "oh no! I better pull over and go grab that..." as it got ran over a bunch of times 😅
If you order a replacement set, the front and rear portion comes together. I'm assuming it would just be called rear roof drip molding. I'm not sure if you can order them separately. The replacements are really expensive unfortunately.
Don’t fill all the holes. How will you screw something into those holes in the future if they are filled? What if the next owner wants a aftermarket roof rack?

I lost my moulding in a car wash as well for my 2015 RAV4. This is extremely helpful. Thank you!
Great, I'm so glad it was helpful to you! I've heard of so many people losing their molding in high winds or car washes. I hope yours stays put now!
I did also!
Bro, I JUST lost my top trim in a car wash too 😂
Yeah I lost mine in the car wash today & I didn’t know what to do but I’m glad I found this video
Right on thanks, now I can put mine back on, It's been sitting in my back seat for 2 months haha.
Sweet! I hope it came out well!

That's true! How often are we out there inspecting the roof molding! 😂
Thanks so much for making this video! It took me forever to find this! I absolutely hate the look of the factory roof rack that came with my Tacoma
Yes, I agree, the truck looks much better without those racks on it. I'm glad this was helpful for you. Cheers!
AWESOME video, lost my drip molding at the automatic car wash ... the blow dryer blew it out
Great, so glad it helped out! I heard about these things flying off in the car wash....good luck!

Hey howzit? Exactly the advice I was lookin for! Mahalo nui loa! 🤙🏾
Shoots!
Thanks for the video, wish my truck came with those clips. Ima just have to silicone them down.
Yes, I don't know why some came with them and some didn't!

Yes, good idea to hold onto them as long as you own your truck. The price that they charge for these are insane!
Has anyone found a link to replace these? Lost mine in the car wash and can’t seem to find replacement on amazon. 2017 Tacoma
Yep, was in car wash today and the passenger side molding came off my 2018 Tacoma about 12 inches in the front. Noticed the rest of it looked loose.
Darn! I hope you were able to save it before you hopped on the freeway and lost it off the truck!
Same truck same year same problem
@@AlonsonDoable Me too!🙁
Good video does anyone know if this process is any different for 2010 taco? Bad at reading and can’t find video
Thanks for the feedback! I'm not sure if it is the same as the older model, but it is probably pretty similar.
Thanks brother.
Happy to help!
Where did you get the weather strips?
I ordered through Toyota Parts on-line. My local, Hawaii, dealer wanted an arm & leg $$$$ Still was over 100 dollars.
I actually traded them to the person that bought my stock roof racks....he didn't need the weather strips!
Where online did you order yours? I live Oahu
Great video, excellent information. 🤙 Feel ready to install mine now.
Right on, good luck with yours! Thanks for the feedback!
Where did you get yours from
Hey brother how's that molding holding up 2 years later with that adhesive and double sided tape?
I would say the adhesive is better in the long run than the double sided tape. It is starting to lift up in a few places...I may have to redo it.
What should I use if I want to cover up the holes in the weather strip ?
Are the holes visible on the outside? I would be tempted to use the same silicone sealant, as long as it is UV resistant.
Are you able to share the part number for the rear corner pieces?
I'm so sorry, I don't have the part number. I actually traded for these drip molding pieces when I sold my stock rack. It should be available on the Toyota website though.

No leaks! And we have had a few very wet rain years here in Northern California. So far, so good! 😁
Hey - is the passenger side considered left or right? I lost mine in a car wash and not sure which one I need to purchase.

That is a good point. I figured silicone does not dry too hard, and shouldn't be all that difficult to remove. Maybe tape is a better option?
Can't see, too dark
These moldings are over 100 bucks a piece it's ridiculous
I know, I can't believe they can charge those prices. I guess they can until there is a good quality aftermarket replacement available.
Little exaggerated lol
