That's what I want to hear. These trucks have had this reputation for some time. Going to look at a single owner, 2012, TRD crew cab 4x4 with 60k miles.
Don't really care about the TRD part but the truck is priced right and comes with all service records. Will let you know.

@@400hpmustang Of all the Tacoma's, the 2.7 liter 3RZ-FE 4-cylinder engine is proven to be the most durable of them all. It replaced the famous 22re engine which was/is equally as durable, but the 3RZ has a good bit more power due to being larger. The 3RZ-FE was made from 1994 through 2004, a 10 yr production run. They have a heavy duty steel timing chain & gears vs the timing BELT used on the V6's. The 3RZ also was produced before the variable valve timing that requires that nearly water-thin oil. I bought a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 with 3RZ-FE engine & automatic transmission brand new. 20 yrs later and 362,000 miles on ALL original engine & drive train, it runs as good as ever. I just replaced the timing chain & gears plus the balance shaft chain for the very first time.........which is "a no-no" because they should be replaced after 150,000 miles. If a timing chain OR belt breaks on ANY overhead cam engine, you drop valves on pistons, busting the pistons & now ya need a total rebuild. Many gripe about the 3RZ "lacking power". The easy fix is INSTALL A QUALITY STAINLESS STEEL ( preferably ceramic coated ) LONG-TUBE HEADER. ( The factory cast iron exhaust manifolds always crack anyway. ) I've installed headers on several V8's I've owned yrs ago with no other mods.......I noticed a slight power gain, but nothing to brag about. But I'm here to tell anyone, I have never seen an engine respond so well to a header only, like the 3RZ-FE. It really brought this thing to life.......even better than when it was brand new. It's now much quicker from take off and decent power gains throughout the entire rpm range. It even causes the automatic transmission to be more responsive by downshifting easier with only a decent "poke" of the throttle. Had I known what a difference a header makes in performance for this thing, I would've done it years ago. My buddy is a Toyota tech/mechanic. He knows everything about all Toyota's. He says the 3RZ will outlast all of the newer engines with variable timing. Sure, the VVT Toyota's are durable as well, but not nearly as much. I'm just about convinced this little truck is going to outlast me......and I'm 59 yrs old, lol. Best vehicle purchase I ever made, hands down. Cheers.

I am a committed Toyota owner for many years. It is a vehicle that you just typically service (maintenance) and rarely if ever have to repair (something died or broke). They are head and shoulders above all vehicles, in my opinion, due to their quality and engineering designs. I have seen many Toyota's passed down after being driven by the primary owner with hundreds of thousands of miles on them, but still reliable and start consistently, to others in their family because they are so cost-effective to own over American and other foreign makes (Japanese, Korean, and European) That's my 2 cents after having worked in the auto repair industry for 30 years. Thanks for reading my response, but I know not everyone shares my thoughts and agrees, which is cool. Take care and be safe, and wear your mask out and about for consideration to others!

Toyota gave me a new frame and new rear leaf springs in 2019. Eleven years out of warranty. Contrast that with Subaru that had a bad engine problem for 13 years and they would only cover them during the warranty period.

If you get aftermarket cheapy headlights, they aren't bad for the money, just make sure you take some silicone adhesive around where the 2 halves come together. You can see the sealing they used, but just to make sure, as water getting inside these are one of the big bitches about them. Again, can't beat the price. I paid $75 for 2.

I like the tacoma, but the frontier has a box frame and they never had any rust issues. The only real problem with frontiers is the factory radiator split internally. This causes the coolant and atf fluid to mix, causing transmission failure. So either get an upgraded radiator, or a manual transmission.

2007 with 120000 miles. Leaf springs and unjoints changed no charge on a Toyota recall. I Changed alternator and shocks at 95k. Well maintained by myself otherwise. Red paint is baked off in Texas sun. Frame is perfect though in dry Texas. It has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

I’m an original owner of a 05 TRD PreReunner. None of those issues. Replaced broken rear shock and u-joint after 10 plus years. Temp/compass gauge went out and resoldered the old cold solder- twice. And a month ago gas gauge died. Sending unit was good. Low mileage 180k plus. Fender flair paint faded after 18 plus years outside 😢

I have a 2006 with 157,000 miles on it. I never had any of these problems. Because I live in the Oregon and Washington area, no salt is used on roads, even today it looks almost new on the underside. The dealership replaced my rear leaf springs as the recall and added another spring. Its now super strong and can hold up to 2300 lbs. as long as you aren't getting too crazy on hills. The only issues I've seen are the plastic head lamp covers, they are slightly fogged on the top side. But its not related to heat from the bulbs. When the truck is all cleaned up, I've had people think its only a few years old.

I'm just glad most of the parts he mentioned are very easy to replace, my main worries is the life of the engine and transmission which its unsurpassed by any other manufacturer, and it's what makes Toyota number 1 over Ford, Volkswagen, benz, Subaru, chevy etc... especially knowing that american cars have more plastic on the block and more unnecessary electrical components that could go wrong its a win for the manufacturer and a loss to the buyer.

  • @UnkleAL1962

I love my 2005 TRD, it has never left me stranded but has the following issues - it blew through the AC compressor at 85K and now it has gone again at 157K. I have been fighting P0420 code which is catalytic converter so I put Iridium spark plugs in it and it went out for a year and came back. So then I cleaned the throttle body and it went out for 8 more months and now back again. So I will try the TPS sensor as you say. The frame was replaced in 2014 which is unheard of for any car manufacturer, and I do the Krown rustproofing treatment and I have no rust living in the north rust belt. It still shifts smooth as butter and and has excellent lights compared to new cars but they are getting smokey so maybe I will try your 1AAU headlights replacement. But I must say, I call this truck "Stormy" as it will trudge through any snowstorm or heavy downpour and always feels safe, it has a killer heater and it just feels beefy. It continues to have good power up our steep hills in this area, and can tow a decent trailer. I know I haven't changed my photo but I gave up my Silverado for this older vehicle, and it has been a good experience.

#1 is the blower fan. Known issue for these trucks. Many of us are on our third, fourth, or fifth one now. Toyota has upgraded them a couple of times to try and resolve the issue.
The A/C will only work on certain settings, usually high.
The pigtail wiring and the blower fan often need replacement at the same time.

I remember the 1st gen Tacoma trucks and these 2nd gen trucks, as a kid and teenager. For more economy than a full size truck and still having adequate hauling capability, you can't go wrong with these Tacoma trucks. However, if you don't need it, just get a Corolla or a Civic. It's from my experience, man.

I love it and will never give it up. I modified it a bit. Get 21 mpg. in the city and 24 hwy. Special plugs, maintain MAP sensor clean, Throttle body clean, Oxg. sensors clean. Tire pressure is the most important. Tacoma is an extremely reliable truck.

I have owned my 2011 4X4 for almost 10 years and now have 255k miles on it. I have done just standard maintenance over that time. The only things that I have had to do multiple times is u-joints on the rear drive shaft three times. Front brakes twice, rear brakes twice because one of the axel seals started leaking and saturated the shoes. The rear leaf springs were recalled and replaced. I have not touched the shocks, ball joints or tie rod ends. I have never done an alignment either. The last set of tires I put on were Michelin LTX A2s, and they lasted 95k miles.
