Shokz Open Run Vs. Soundpeats Run Free Lite: Can this $29 headphone compete with the $129 Shokz?

  • I recently compared the Shokz Open Run to the Apple AirPods Pro, Power Beats Pro and JBL Tune 230 NC. I picked the Shokz as the best running headphones from that group for their functionality and ease of use for running. I was recently sent a pair of Soundpeats Run Free Lite headphones for the purpose of review. I decided to match them up to the Shokz. These headphones punch way above their price point. Thanks for the review. You eloquently covered a lot of ground. I've found that value type BC headsets mostly have very poor microphones. Can you compare the Soundpeats microphone? Oh, oh, and also the difference in sound leakage.

Technically the Soundpeats aren't bone conduction. They call it air conduction. But it basically means that the driver is sitting outside your ear instead of completely covering it, like with an over ear headphone, or in it (like with ear buds). They essentially have the driver in the headphone floating over the outside of your ear, rather than being in it or on it. To be honest, I really haven't used either of these yet for making calls. For that, I prefer to use my Apple AirPods Pro. those have better sound quality, good microphones, and I use the noise cancellation feature indoors. The Soundpeats do leak a lot of sound if you turn the volume up high. More so that the Shokz, since the Soundpeats have the drivers open to the air. The Shokz also leak sound at higher volumes, but it is less noticeable that the Soundpeats. I'll update this reply once I try using these for calls.

@@runwithsean Thank you Sean. There's a clear design difference of AC versus BC. Indeed, the SHokz are optimized for open ear use. Limited sound quality= less competition with surroundings :) & more volume before they vibrate. Thanks for pointing out the Soundpeats slight extra blockage of one's "earhole" BTW 75% volume? Consider the crickets Sean.

Thanks Sean. Had to try a pair of these since so many reviewers rave about them for the price... I won't use mine again. Uncomfortable, sound poorly, and it's awkward to press the buttons while actually wearing it. I've tried a lot of Bone and Air conduction headsets. Most are just $!@#. $hokz drives me nuts with the loud beeps, and skewed flat sound. redial instead of skipping forward or backward... Buy them for their noise cancelling mic otherwise, for music: G7, Mairdi, or H15

I hear you. Agree that none of these are the best for sound quality. I'm looking for ease of operation when running. That's why I prefer the button operation of the Shokz. I wouldn't pick any of these to just sit down and listen to music with.

They do show the battery percentage on your phone if you connect using the app. When I run , I usually don’t bring my phone and connect the headphones to my Garmin watch for music. So I can’t see the battery percentage without connecting to my phone and opening the app. So you can see the battery percentage if you use the app.

The Soundpeats definitely punch above their price with sound quality and features. But the Shokz are definitely a higher quality product. Especially for water resistance and overall feel.
