The Next Smash Roster Will Look Like This:

- In today's episode I cut down the smash roster to just 40 characters. There's no shot smash can balloon any bigger in size than where it's at now so cuts are definitely necessary. I'm going to look so foolish if the next smash is Smash Ultimate Deluxe.

I seriously dislike the "the general population of today won't know about xyz." One of the things I like about Smash the most is that it's basically a gaming encyclopedia. There are many games that I love that I wouldn't had known about if it wasn't for Smash. And educating people about older/more obscure games, especially through its roster, is not a bad idea imo.
this is why I believe Sakurai has always took suggestions over the internet more for entertainment rather than crowdsourcing the next Smash roster. Few people asked for Terry Bogard but that was his pick (plus Nintendo having a good relationship with SNK, making the latter more than happy to throw in as many songs and cameos as they could cram into one DLC update) to educate the younguns not just on what used to be Street Fighter's biggest competitor, but the entire history of the Neo Geo, and by God did he make sure to go in as much detail as he could. I salute ye Mashedpotato Samurai.

It would be nice if clone characters stayed and kept the movesets as a legacy to the old versions of the characters that need to be updated.
It'd be cool to have Funky Kong playing like how Donkey Kong has been just "beeg monke" in all the previous Smash games, but with his personal surfer dude swagger.

I dont think there is gonna be that many cuts, cutting most 3rd party charcaters (keep the bandai-namco ones bayonetta, sonic and ryu) and some semi-clones like pichu, young link, toon link, dr mario falco, lucas, chrom, lucina, maybe roy, wolf and lucario. The rest stay, this is already a lot of cuts, I agree that putting everyone again, defeats the everyone here purpose, but I dont think that means they need to cut in half only clones and character that are hard to get because of contratual reasons. Until today smash only cut semi-clones and characters that for one reason or another were hard to put on the game I dont think thats gonna change

I disagree that Lucario will get the axe, if anything, Mewtwo is going back in the box as Lucario is A. More popular (at least if polls are to be believed), B. Been more consistent in the franchise (Introduced in Brawl and made it onto the base roster of 4, whereas Mewtwo had to be added in as DLC and was missing between Brawl and 4), and C. Helps diversify the Pokemon representation so it isn't _all_ Gen 1, which I'd argue is very important for a long-runner. Say what you will about Fire Emblem, but at least its characters represent the full scope of the series' history; meanwhile, of the 8 (11 counting Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard individually) Pokemon representatives, 4 (7) of them come from the same games, and I'd argue it's really closer to 5 (8) because Pichu is an extension of Gen 1 nostalgia. Additionally Joker stands a good chance of returning given he's another SEGA character like Sonic and Bayonetta. For some reason I also see Hero somehow sneaking in there if only because to my recollection Square was less cagey with the Dragon Quest stuff in Smash than they were with Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts, plus Dragon Quest games are seeing main series releases on the Switch. I would HOPE Snake and the Belmonts stick around too because they feel almost quintessentially Smash Bros. by this point, but Konami is Konami, so we'll see...

I am not gonna lie, I tottally forget that Joker is a SEGA character, with that said Bayonetta and Sonic being both SEGA does help, because is 2 character for the legal trouble of 1, this wasnt my reason to make them the exceptions. Bayonetta is a nintendo exclusive and Sonic is THE 3rd party character to add, has been in all games since brawl, rival to Mario, etc... So I am still not sure about Joker.
I also think Hero, Megaman and the Belmonts have a decent shot, maybe not all 3 at the same time, but at least one of them.

Pac-Man deserves to stay. He’s one of the most iconic video game characters ever and was *the* huge hit in arcades. And if it wasn’t for Pac-Land, Miyamoto would’ve lacked the inspiration he needed for SMB1. Besides that he’s also very recognizable.
Mother nowadays is more relevant than you think. It’s got 2 comic book from 2019-2022, recently 2 sets of plushies, a bunch of other merch in 2023, the release on the virtual console (there was a *huge* demand for it) and there’s a lot of stuff coming in 2024, since it’s Mother‘s 30th anniversary.
With its ever growing fanbase I‘d say Ness (and probably Lucas) are more recognizable than ever, more so than characters like Fox.
There are so many users with Ness PFPs I run into on the internet at the most random places.
Besides that Mother also played a significant part in Pokémon’s creation (Itoi founded Ape, who later worked on a lot of the early Pokémon titles).
Mother also influenced a lot of popular modern indie RPGs like Undertale or Omori for example.
So no, Ness has more going for him than just the OG 12 argument.
And the reason why Lucas is there is because he was originally supposed to replace Ness, but when Sakurai heard Mother 3 wont be leaving Japan, he brought back Ness.

Your Pokemon roster is definitely messed up. It should be Pikachu, Charizard, Mewtwo, and either Lucario or Greninja (who are the top 2 most popular Pokemon). The fact you kept Jigglypuff and Incineroar but cut Charizard was alarming. Also odd that you cut Lucario due to “poor execution”, but advocated for changing the execution of other characters like Luigi. But the rest of your roster is pretty spot on imo
Yes thank you very much, Pikachu Charizard and Mewtwo are basically the three most famous Pokemons of the franchise.
Also why cut Pokemon trainer when it serves as a unique fighter that adds diversity. Playstyles should be taken account as well, not just representation

Just remove Lucina and Chrom keep everyone else they’re all very unique from one another and some of the most well designed characters in the game. Why would you be so adamant about cutting clones when they take mich less work to design.
IMO the Miis need a new moveset, likely inspired by Miitopia. The RPG aspect translate perfectly to Smash. Maybe have Mii Adventurer (based on Miitopia), Mii Athlete (Based on Wii Sports and maybe also Wii Fit) and Mii Civillian (based on games such as Wii Party, Tomodachi Life and Wii Play)
I like the idea of the mii fighters and their costumes but It would be nice to have just a normal mii with moves from the actual games too

I think it's a solid list, good reasoning for what characters are cut, but one addition: Steve, only because Minecraft is one of the best selling games of all time and is iconic, and totally not because I am biased due to wanting him in for years before he was added
I’d say little Mac should be considered because punch out is a big legacy title from Nintendo that was up there with Mario and Zelda in its prime.

If I may I would like to share my opinion on the Zelda Portion.
Link should have 2 variants, one like we see in botw and totk, and one like we see in other Zelda games. Ganondorf should have a complete rework where he is swapped out with the totk version.

Some of these cuts hurt (side note if you ever try XC2 again Chapter 4 is the low point it's all up from there) but I think this is an overall good selection
I am completely fine with this, only because my main, Incinaroar got in. Plus less sword fighters is always a plus

I think they might be cut but not the reasons they think it might be.
One being that aftter Ultimate there is no guarantee who’s gonna stay, it wouldn’t be surprising if they cut even characters that hailed from Nintendo consoles like they did on Brawl/Smash 4.
The other being the original intent for the XB2 characters which apparently was to use Rex/Pyra, which possibly meant Mythra was not even considered at first. They are in such a weird state and hence the doubt if they’ll come back

@@dylansmith5206 Smash Remix, a hack of Smash Bros for the N64 has Peppy, Slippy, Falco and even Wolf. Though to access Peppy and Slippy, you have to press up on the d-pad while selecting Fox for Peppy and Falco for Slippy
Super Mario franchise is _the_ most recognizable franchise here; I disagree with it having only 4 fighters as it’s underwhelming. Daisy and Yoshi shouldn’t be cut as they’re the most recognizable after the main 4. Bowser Jr. also shouldn’t be cut as he’s the second main antagonist, also has 7 Koopalings for costumes which is perfect

I would argue that Pac Man would most likely make it in. Bandai Namco has developed the last 2 games, so it would not be crazy to assume they would work on Smash 6. Most likely the easiest 3rd party license they could get.

There are more than 3 grappler types in Ultimate you know. Ice Climbers literally do almost nothing useful outside of their grab game and their neutral is AIDs. Even their entire zoning kit with desynchs centralize around getting the grab. Just an example. The term grappler usually relates to a character who centralizes around landing a grab for their maximum punishment yield or to play their advantage state in general. There's about a dozen of these in Ultimate.
I'm expecting the original 12 to make it in and no one else.
I think the Miis would be better characters if instead of being bland "fighter archetypes" they actually had moves that reference games they were in.
(Also, Nintendo, please give us a Mii costume for the classic legless design, please)

I disagree with some of the credentials here, but you ended up with a roster I wouldn't be completely mad at. I do think Pac-Man should be there though, out of anyone he feels like the weirdest gloss-over if Sega and Capcom are still fair game. Since Namco is actively working on the title I suspect he may even be the absolute safest one. Generally I believe the final roster will be more generous to third parties but lowballing makes for a more interesting conversation.
I know that these cuts are hard though and limiting yourself to 40 limits the flexibility here. I guess the one other pick I'd probably vouch for is Pyra / Mythra, on the basis that Xenoblade is one of Nintendo's more recent successes and they're another pretty relevant Switch-era character equivalent to Min Min or Byleth. They're also a pretty strong execution of the tag-team / transformation mechanic which is otherwise absent now. I feel like all three of the first party Fighter Pass guys will come back. Good on you for giving Animal Crossing its due as well.
Personal bias, I'd miss Little Mac a lot but I get it under these confines. I still think his legacy and his niche on the roster justify themselves but I'm not sure who else you would cut here. I also really don't agree with the logic of K. Rool being "part of Ultimate's identity" being a reason not to bring him back? Like you said, that doesn't apply to Ridley so I don't think that matters here. It's easy enough to understand why DK's villain is less safe than some of the others just by nature of the series not being as active and K. Rool not being as much of a staple anymore.

I think cutting Megaman and Pac-Man immediately made these cuts invalid for me. You can't just cut Pac-Man of all characters. I'd say he's one of the three most recognizable characters in video games (the other two being Mario and Sonic), and he's a Bandai Namco rep on top of that, which, you know, they also help develop Smash as a whole. As for Megaman, I just think he's the better of the two Capcom franchises. Also, compared to Min Min, he's definitely the cooler zoner when you know what you're doing. A little bummed about Trainer and Sora (my main at this point) being cut too, since the former's a really cool and unique character and the latter is the most requested character, at least from the Sm4sh Ballot, but I don’t think they have priority over the other two. I'd probably cut Isabelle and Min Min for Pac-Man and Megaman, mostly for iconic status and so Sonic isn't the only goofy looking 3rd part character. Other than that though the rest of the cuts seem alright.
Im not considering the opinion of someone who didn't even bother getting all the DLC characters.

I imagine the game would split into multiple, just based on series. There would be a Pokemon Smash, a Fire Emblem Smash, a Splatoon Smash... Metroid probably wouldn't work, because it has like 0 characters if you don't include Space Pirates, but anyway...
Actually, chances are ALL Nintendo-owned characters stay, and it'll mostly be 3rd party characters who are cut. Of course, some 3rd party characters will stay (Sonic, Pac-Man, Mega Man, Ryu, etc) but certain other ones are likely gone (Sora, Snake, Cloud, Sephiroth, Hero, etc, but even then you never know about having one Square Enix rep, most likely Cloud or Geno as a newcomer and one Konami rep- such as Simon Belmont). There's no reason to cut any Nintendo-owned characters though- except for possibly Lucas- unless Mother 3 comes to North America within that time- and it likely will!
The characters I can see getting cut are Dr. Mario, Pichu, Young Link, Shiek, Zero Suit Samus, Snake, Toon Link, Mega Man, Corrin, most of the Fighters Pass (exept for Byleth, Min-Min, Steve, Pyra and Mythra, and Seperorh), and maybe the echo fighters.

1) Link would have a totally new moveset based on BotW and TotK.
2) Toon Link with more unique animations and moves from Windwaker, Phatom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks.
3) Young link with the slingshot and bommerang... And he transforms in adult link, changhing his abilities for Bow and Arrows and bombs, with the adition of the graplinghook

If you think Samus is lame, you clearly have only ever fought bad Samus players. Her optimal playstyle has a ton of combos and beating you, and she can be really really creative. She plays like she does in Super Metroid or most of the other Metroid sidescrollers.

I actually think that the characters that should make it to the game should be based on their EXPLOSIVE IP. And not just from one country where the others don’t have access.
Japan needs to stop adding characters based upon the IP in their region and focus on the characters that the entire world historically wanted to see.

I don't like the idea of Jigglypuff making it in, I think Peach should be overhauled with a Showtime moveset, and Daisy with a Sports and Olympics moveset.
Lucario and Mewtwo have similar movesets and I think Lucario is more interesting (aura mechanic, not gen 1) and more relevant (2nd on the same poll that put Greninja first).
I think Fox should get Falco and Wolf-based alt models because they're basically the Ganondorf problem but without good source material or relevance. Same for Marth with Roy, Lucina, and Chrom. Also Ness with Lucas and Ninten. Dr Mario should have been a Mario alt from the start. Cloud is far too important to go, he's Ryu-level genre defining.
I generally don't like the idea of keeping the original 12 in these rebuilds because Nintendo never really had to cut anyone before. Now that they are, I think the ones who've declined in relevance should be first to go, even if that means getting rid of Captain Falcon. The die hard fans might not like it but they could replace him with someone interesting and important.
We will get new characters and the ONLY CUTS will be echoes, (Excluding Star fox characters bc it's the coolest first party Nintendo shooter) Young and toon link, Dr. Mario, (cause he is absolute garbage) and Dark Samus will be de-cloned.

40 characters is one more than Brawl. Saying it’s “being realistic” to cut that much is kind of ridiculous. One of Sakurai’s philosophies about sequels is that they have to look more grand than the previous instalment. He even made a video about it. The only reason people keep suggesting that this is realistic is because they can’t comprehend that technology has evolved since they were kids, because it makes them feel old.

Jigglypuff is a central part of smash, she *is* Sakurai’s glass cannon, also there is no modern smash scene without HBox, so cutting his main is very shortsighted.
Instead of remiving Snake I would add Raiden from metal gear rising, or if you don't want another sword fighter the add Big Boss as an Snake's echo fighter.

I highly agree with most of your picks, being Legend of Zelda should snip out Toon and Young Link, Pokemon with a majority of its choices. I disagree that Corrin should be removed from the game. While I like Fire Emblem, I agree some of the claims are valid like Lucina, Roy, and Chrom are all fighters using different gameplays of Marth's move set.
To bring up the reasons why one would want to play as her being:
1. They are your main: Yes, I agree. They are my main in Smash Ultimate.
2. You haven't played Fire Emblem Fates: I played Fates, all three routes. Sure, their plots and most characters are the game's weak spots, but I still had a lot of fun with the games.
3. You have a foot fetish: Odd character design aside, I don't play Corrin for that reason because I don't have a foot fetish.
Corrin has his/her own moveset, so it's not like he/she would be a lazy inclusion into the next game. I'd say Ike should stay, but I never played the games he's included in.
I feel if they have any new Animal Crossing Characters as fighters! I know Tom Nook would be a great edition! But I feel that their Famous Musician K.K. Slider should join the smash too. I also suggest adding a few extra MegaMan Characters in the smash besides MegaMan himself! Like ProtoMan, Bass & Duo. And also some MegaMan X Characters too like X & Zero. And the villains like Dr. Wily of MegaMan & Sigma of MegaMan X. One thing I’d wonder though if they put Sigma in Smash! As X finds out in MegaMan X3 after defeating Dr. Doppler that game after Doppler comes to his senses! Sigma’s Real Form is of a Computer Virus. So with that said! If they put him in the Smash! Would they use his true form or would they use his human form?
Am I the only one, who doesn't give a flying duck about Jigglypuff being in the original roster, and think it should be finally kicked out for good?

Her glass cannon play style is essential to smash’s DNA and almost every meta in the series.
