Before every season starts (I'm a professional charter skipper) I always watch 2 or 3 videos to "psych in", and to see how other skippers are doing it on different boats. You're video, your explanation, your chill approach and your clear breakdown is stellar! Thank you very much.
Im doing charter as well. I just looked at this. For the same reason. My helm is too far away from the stern cleat, so i use the winches to bring it backwards
Nice clear instructions. But dont get fooled that it works often like that, there are 100+ different situations (wind, current, boat shape and props, thrusters, marina situation, wind shades etc). After sailing for 60 yrs including single around the world, im still learning.
The best video I've seen on docking -- and departing a dock -- in windy conditions. And singlehanded! "Trust the process," he says. "You're not in a hurry." Highly recommended!
With a long keel boat you have to almost entirely rely on your bow thruster to steer, or the marina RIB if you don’t have a bow thruster, and as the man said in another video: don’t be afraid to call the marina for a dock hand and even a RIB to help if needed. Far better show a little humility than taking out your neighbour’s stanchions and life lines etc.
Truly one of the best examples of this topic I have seen, very nicely done. The emphasis on securing the windward line and keeping a bit of forward power on is something I don't see many other people teaching docking techniques talk about. I also was very interested to see how you just let the windward stern line fall into the water while leaving the slip, everything I had always been taught was never to let the dock line hit the water while the engine is running but I can see how that can be incredibly useful in a single handed situation. Thanks for sharing.
"No drama" indeed. Very nice to see how experience, planning and preparation can reduce the drama in these potentially stressful maneuvers. Another point when not single handed is crucial - communication! Must make sure everyone knows the plan and is able to execute on it.
Outstanding video! The approach, methodology, and clarity are all top-notch. I'm really impressed and can't wait to see more, perhaps with a focus on docking using rings next time? It would be captivating to see how you adapt to the added challenges and time constraints
Best docking and med moor video I've ever seen! Amazing explanation while showing the maneuvers and great clear video showing the hands on what to do and how to do it correctly. Based on the flag, it had to be a 20+ steady wind and getting that boat in and out flawlessly on a med moor is impressive!
Absolutely great video. Should be shown to lots of maria employees in Croatia (they are known for yelling "Mooring mooring! and trying to give you the mooring before you even had the chance to fix one stern line, and even pulling the lazy line up towards the prop and shouting "stop engine, mooring!"). Also for skippers who do not have that much routine it can be valuable :)
Very good information here. When I started boating, the instructor told me there are two things you need to do to dock properly. First: bring the boat to zero speed at neutral and study what the boat wants to do. This takes just a few seconds, the boat will usually not do what you want it to do. Then you need to apply corrections. Sometimes on your lucky days, you pretty well don’t need to do anything, just use the current and wind in your favor and the boat docks itself. Seconds: When you realize that what you’re trying to do is not working ABORT FAST or else the situation will just get worse
Even though l'd consider myself to be a pretty experienced yachtsman, l found this video to be excellent! I especially like the way that there were no big muscles needed! 🙂
Very well explained and demonstrated! Even your simple explanations and pointing out that preparation and observation is the key plus starting all over again if something goes wrong is the best advice one can give.
Wow, fantastic knowledge and techniques from someone who is obviously a master at his craft, thank you for sharing this, very helpful indeed. I'm just getting back into sailing again after 47 years being away from it, and am looking for a good school to go to, so I will be definitely checking out your Seven Seas school, and I've subscribed, thank you.
Well done and well explained. We had our last trip last week in Croatia and also did some practice with moorings and docking under wind. Preparation and instructed crew is key!
My hat off! Very nice video. It took me a couple of years to learn what you just taught in a very good way. Single handling a 22000 kg boat a bit like yours. If I can add anything, I did change my position when starting that long calm reversing into the space facing backwards. If the boat allows it is very easy to stand looking aft and of course, you need access to your engine control. Even for those really tight harbors where helping a bit with a bow thruster is needed it becomes very intuitive and like moving your " tail" with the thruster. This of course when crosswind is so strong that you are revering in with an upwind angle to get into the space! The other add is to instruct crew or passengers never to try to use hands or feet to fix any problems, Fenders are the only things to be used and in the worst case boats can be repaired, feet do not grow back easily! Thank you, excellent!
Excellent video with a clearly communicated process. A couple of things I would do differently. 1. When leaving I would not leave such a long trailing line, but adjust it prior to leaving to the right length. It is absolutely fine to drag a line when going ahead. However, if for whatever reason you needed to go astern before recovering the line then you risk it fouling the prop. 2. When you are preparing to return. I would sit stern to the wind as this minimises drift and also means you don’t have to worry about the bow being blown off. If you drift too far then simply engaging reverse will return you to your original position. Indeed it can also be possible to stay in gear against the wind and maintain station. 3. Rather than using a bowline I use a bite with the return on a Genoa winch. This way I have a longer line if required and a quick and simple way to reduce length. When backing against the lazy lines I can then easily transfer the return to the cleat. Also means you don’t have to swap out the bowline.
Thank you very much Alexandros by far the best video I have seen on single handed med mooring or any other docking for that matter. I will seriously consider you and your school for training.
Very well done ... "Be Prepared and keep calm" is also what I tell myself all the time when doing habour manoevers. Nothing must ever be done in haste. :-) excellent video.
Brilliantly instructive. Preparation and slow are definitely key. Saildrive or shaft/rudder? I was seriously impressed with the steering control in reverse. My shaft/rudder is a nightmare in anything other that absolutely perfect conditions - about 5% of the time!
Hey. Great and very clear instructions. I really liked the phrase "do it methodically". Can you show the proper method for replacing the windward line with a slip line? 🙏
Awesome, always wanted to see this done single handed, thank you very much, super calm and supreme. I wonder how the process works if you don't have moorings but need your anchor. Also: I always keep the boat in reverse at 1500-2000 rpm to fix the backlines, and only as soon as the crew tells me the backlines are fixed and their hands are out I stop revving. With the method of thrusts, I know you did because of the wind, but it looked a little bit dangerous, because you would have 1500rpm equivalent of strengh of the morrings pulling the boat forward while you are trying to fix the backline (and have your fingers in there).
Everything you mentioned is correct, sometimes when I do it alone, like in the video, because of my confidence with the lines I manage to do the hitch before the recoiling, but of course the proper and 100% safe method is as you mentioned and this is exactly how I teach it.
Great video ... I enjoyed that. Will you be able to do a video of when the wind is coming from ahead, and the bow is being pushed a little differently ?

Very good! i love these videos! I was out sailing yesterday and had more then 25 knots of winds. And was gona dock against a pier to fuel. The wind was directly from the side. So i had to decide wich side of the pier i should go for. To have the wind help me to the pier and then have a harder time leaving it or use the other side of the pier to have a harder time docking but easier to leave. I took the right side wich had the wind blowing me in towards the pier. The docking was pretty easy, but i had a hard time leaving now. The wind was about 20-25kt directly to the side. I was singelhanded.
To the last video I explain the technique to go alongside very smoothly by backing the boat to the dock. th-cam.com/video/8DzrZi2e_cI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ZlAHNPILitNrRHCo I don't know if it was possible to your case but taking a decision like that usually depends of a lot of factors
Nice job. What is the advantage of using the short bowline line to do the initial docking? Wouldn't it make more sense to prepare a slip line that you can throw over the bollard? This will give you a bigger target so that you can throw the line at the bollard from a metre to a meter and a half away. Are you concerned about a longer line fouling the prop?
Both works fine, you do whatever makes you feel more comfortable depending of the conditions. For that specific case I wanted the length to be predefined and not very long so I will just engage forward and hold the boat to the wind. To shoot a lasso usually requires longer line so you may have to pull the slack in a bit before you forward and that is pretty much multitasking
When dropping the windward stern line into the water, is it a good idea to shift to neutral while you move out (assuming you have enough speed for control) so as to avoid fouling the prop? Or do you just let it trail behind
Nice video. On leaving the mooring id rather leave one mooring line for last. It pulls me away from the wall and while I walk back to the wheel the mooring line sinks. Strange bowline. I tie single normal bowlines since 1969 and never failed!
