    I just want to thank you for taking my guitar playing to another level. Going through the blues primer now and looking forward to starting the masterclass on Udemy. I have been able to understand and retain your lessons better than other instructors. I was drawn in bc I’m a big fan of the Dead and Phish. Really helping me get through the quarantine right now. Stay safe and thank you!

    Stumbled across your videos and have never looked back. Not only do you explain well but you don't patronize or treat us like idiots. Your enthusiasm is fantastic and the content great. Lastly your "occasional" mistakes only make your teaching MORE accessible as your not perfect. We all make mistakes and so do you. Keep up the good work. Respect from England!

I've been playing guitar for almost a decade now and to be honest I kinda pride myself on my technique and all that sort of stuff, but lately I've been stuck on the same licks and ideas and I couldn't bring myself to change this cuz I'm a bit lazy :(... but your lessons are just so fun and easy to understand... So, morning! now I am awake and able to leave a comment...
    I use this method more like a concept to do this 'call and response' thing with blues motives within a blues chorus and to contrast the pure blues scale sound.
    Let's say we are in a blues in A. As we know, Am penta (plus the b5) works fine for all Chords... I use the A major penta (plus the b3) over the A7 and the Am penta (plus b5) over D7 and E7. The A major penta works also for the E7 but I prefer minor to keep it simpler for two-bar-phrases.
    Simply major penta over the I7 chord and minor penta over the IV7 and V7 chords. Both pentatonics build on the root of the I7 chord.
    Cheers :)

    • @KeepItMetal100
      @KeepItMetal100 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct that the blue note in major pentatonic is flat 3 rather than flat 5, but I think that it's really common in blues to have like a major-minor pentatonic which includes both scales so 1-2-b3-3-4-b5-5-6-b7. Maybe also throw the major 7th to get the major third of the 5 chord. Then just hit notes from that big scale/bunch of notes according to chord played underneath. That's the way I think about it :D

    So when you call out a "7th chord", you're referring to the "dominant 7th (1-3-5-b7)". Can somebody explain why a "major chord" has a b7? My first thought would be maj7 (1-3-5-7).

    Confused of London,so what's the B.B. Box about,I thought it was major

    • @vojtechwolf5601
      @vojtechwolf5601 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you shift te BB box (i.e. the second position of a pentatonic scale) so that it begins at the root note (here it's E), then you're playing an E major pentatonic scale. The second way to do this, which is the subject of this video, is to shift the first position of a pentatonic (E minor) so that you play the root note (E) with your pinky. The fingering is the same as an E minor pentatonic, but you shift it down a third to C sharp. You're basically playing a C sharp minor pentatonic.

    how does a major pentatonic have a 4th? if the 4th is missing in he major pentatonic but not in the minor?

    • @StichMethodGuitar
      @StichMethodGuitar  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does not have a 4th. It is only a 1 2 3 5 6.... you need to add it which now makes it have 6 notes which people call a hexitonic scale. The minor has a totally different set of intervals... 1 b3 4 5 b7

    • @MetalDoraemon6
      @MetalDoraemon6 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StichMethodGuitar oh ok. Now i understand. But being major blues played with dominant 7th chord ( wich also have a b7) the major pentatonic even with a added 4th is missing the flat 7. Usually i use a minor with a major 3 being a passing tone to the major pentatonic. But even that way i feel incomplete, lack of character, missing that SRV way of playing ..

    Ah, the secret sauce.

  • @wheezystrat
    @wheezystrat 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What? There are many many many blues licks that cross both scales. In fact cats like BB King just mix the major and minor pentatonic (+b5). Even the artists you call "minor" players do this all the time. You get 1 2 b3 3 4 b5 5 6 b7 -- that is what people actually work with.
    I mean think of the iconic BB pick-up lick -- slide in on the 6th, play the 5th, the root, then climb down the minor pentatonic.
    Separating them makes no sense. People do the "switch" you are talking about in the middle of the *same phrase* all the time. That is the "blues sound" -- it is neither major or minor, but both. Unless it's a minor blues.

    • @wheezystrat
      @wheezystrat 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess I am taking it out of context having not watched all of your vids. I just think that telling people that the sound of the blues is strictly minor scales over dominant chords is misleading. Here is a guy arguing for blues tonality to be recognized as unique due to it being neither major nor minor but both: www.ethanhein.com/wp/2014/blues-tonality/
