Thank you for this one. This video came up at the exact moment that I was pondering what to play over the 4. I keep hearing people talk about using the caged system to find target notes but I feel scales, especially pentatonics, are easier for me to visualize. That’s because I spent years playing them and not really understanding them, but I know them in my sleep. So this is just makes so much sense to me. I also love the way you explain things. I am a big fan.

This is such a cool move. I remember this is where I departed from the primer because I felt I needed to learn modes to be able to play the mixolydian over the IV. Now, I know the modes in all the CAGED positions and this completely makes sense and sounds wonderful.
Got to tell you I been following you and your taught me a lot past 3 Vids on the Blues just got done studying the Major Ionian, Mix and Dorian and I like what your are saying in this Logic. Learning since my stoke I am I remember all this practice each day. Lucky

Ian, I've been stuck in the pentatonic for awhile now, playing all five boxes, and trying to keep it fresh. But it's starting to get stale, or boring. This is quite the eye opener! Hi Stich - It's been a while, I know. I really liked this one, and I felt ready for it now. I have the scales more under my fingers now (months of working on scales and memorizing songs), and that D Mixo was silky to throw in. I'm glad you finally mentioned at the end that the minor 3rd of the IV chord is not a good note in a blues solo. I'm not sure why you would say that minor pentatonic is one good option on the IV chord, when the note that makes it minor is a note to avoid.

Mr. Stich, I hope you get to read this AND consider this a love letter because in the last 2 days, I've watched 4 of your videos. I have learned from you more than I ever learned from all the numerous lessons I've received from no less than I think 5 instructors since I've when I first picked up the guitar 30-31 years ago. It all finally makes sense.
Some times I think my instructors didn't want me to unlock the secrets that I have seen in these 4 videos because they wanted me to keep coming back. One instructor was even one of the guitarists in the band Sponge. He would say to me, when I would ask him "how do these guys solo? they're up and down the neck with such ease" and he would reply "you really have to want it, man, you really have to WANT it."
Well, if he had just taught me what I've learned from you in these videos, who knows what life experiences I would have had by playing on stage at open mics or in bands? It's never too late obviously but I want to thank you because my way of thinking was always "what are my options(?)" and I would always be stuck in minor pentatonic on the I chord. It's superfluous. Now I have REAL OPTIONS-AND it makes total sense.
Before, my way of going up on stage for open mics would be to practice the hell out of a song by learning tab not having any idea what was going on. Then, when that was over, I couldn't jam because I didn't know what I was doing. the other guitarist would turn to me and say your turn and I would shake my head vigorously because I was completely clueless. Now, no more.

Really a great lesson Ian. So if I ge it right: when the blues is in A minor you can play the Mixolydian scale on the D7 chord. This scale contains the notes of the G major scale; which comes down to the Dorian scale of the Am. So it's like playing a Dorian blues, but only on the IV chord.
Maybe this sounds complicated but thinking this way makes it easier for me: play the major scale of scale that is 1 step lower than the root of the I chord.
I’m pretty much a strummer/fingerpicking guy, can’t solo at all and I’m afraid I’m too old to learn. But I do understand a little music theory and chord progressions and scales...enough to say that this was an excellent and intelligent lesson. I stayed till the end. I had to. Good job Stich.
Dennis -- you're never too old. I've been playing guitar for almost 49 years, and never even learned the pentatonic scale until almost 2 years ago. Almost immediately, I was able to improvise on demand without hitting > 50% "wrong" notes (and without being terrified when someone said "Kevin, take a solo!"). I then started to check out a variety of different TH-cam channels, to lean more scales and modes, and in my opinion Stich is the best, by far. For me at least, he offers the perfect mix of well-explained theory plus practical application to the fretboard. And he does it without being arrogant, even when he's unabashedly sharing his own strong opinions about things. All i can say is -- subscribe to this channel. It'll give you the knowledge and confidence to take your playing in new directions.
Never count yourself out like that , man! Soloing is about knowing what and where to play and putting your own melody and style over the chords. It doesnt have to be fast, at all, it doesnt uave to be super technical. Idk if you listen to Grateful dead , or any of the projects Jerry was in. He will almost always start solos by playing the melody of a verse or chorus and then start embellishing it with extra notes and techniques. It's one of the best ways to do it. I hope you have kept at it since this comment. Much love, enjoy the journey and always believe in yourself
@@nickdrey1200 thanks Nick for your words of encouragement. Your explanation about Jerry Garcia’s technique may be worth revisiting. I mean, aren’t scales just chords anyway, essentially the notes of the chord played individually across time?
@@DennisAnthonis what you are describing is an arpeggio, which is another very cool and useful tool. Scales are basically a container of notes of any given key. You can look at the notes in a scale to figure out what chords will be in the key. When you read a tab of a whole scale, its showing you a convenient place on the fretboard that contains all of the notes in that scale. Once you get a grasp of where every note is on your fretboard, you can basically start playing without being stuck in the "box", as the same note can be found in a few different places
You can also keep playing the I minor pentatonic on the IV chord, and add the major 3rd of the IV chord if you're after this note.
So awesome and so well explained. So a question-why do you change the jam based on the chord changes? In other words, why not jam in A the entire time? Could you jam in A mixo the whole time? Thx stich!

Stich! Great lesson man! I can't wait to start working on this! But I've got a question! I understand Mixolydian and how it works here but my problem is stilllll my right hand. I can't seem to play a 12bb rythym I like. I'd kill just to be able to play a 12bb the way you looped in this video. I know all my 7th chord caged voicings and I can mix them up pretty well... I mimic what drum tracks are doing and that's helped a bit. But when I'm on my own, just me, my right hand sucks! I want to be able to play a killer blues rythym on my own!! 😫 I was gonna bring this up Thursday but maybe you have and suggestion or 2 that could help?

Do you have anything on the Albert box? If I were to play say that in A I would pretty much stay in the A box and use the Albert and BB box. I guess that's kind of simple and basic but it works.
Wouldn’t you look at that D7 chord and use the G major scale to give it a mix sound?
hi, cool channel, trying to learn the Mixolydian mode but it often sounds weird, currently trying Fire on the Mountain B Mixolydian, when I play Pentatonic it sounds off, try C# Pentatonic sounds ok, any suggestions, the chord progression I am using is B maj A maj

Hey Ian, I’m confused. At the outset of the lesson you said that one approach would be to play the minor pentatonic scale for each chord (A D E) in the progression essentially changing key. Why does this work? My instinct would be to play Am pentatonic over the whole progression.

Thanks Ian, appreciate the lesson. Question. When you did the myxolydian on the 4 it was a D myxolydian correct? Because it seems that the BB box was in A. I mean you probably could do an A myxolydian and a D BB box over an A blues but that wasn't the case here. Or was it?
Jerry Wilson an A BB Box would be on the tenth fret where the D mixo is, so they are both very similar. The A BB Box is where the root of the scale is on the 10th fret of the B string. So these two scales share a lot of notes. Did that make sense?
Yeah but it looked like your were playing the A BBb box( feels like another language) resolving on the F# ( the major 3rd of D). And listening to guys like you and other players, it is starting to sink in that the way you color up a 4 chord is a giant step to tasty progressions

No, the blues uses three different 7th chords which breaks the rules of traditional music. When this happens, you can do a lot of different things because the rules have been broken. One way is to treat each 7th chord as the 5 of the Key it would come from.... hence why a Mixolydian can work at that moment. Hope that made sense, I will address this in my live feed Thursday. In a blues, they are all 7th chords which can have the mixolydian on top of it

Aaaaarrrgggghhh! Listen: I dig a lot of what you do. You’ve given me more than a couple of good ideas for ways to improve my playing. Thank you, but... there are a couple of things in this lesson that are sending me up a wall.
1) At about 4:04, you refer to “a major third” but it isn’t very clear what you’re talking about. Having rewound to watch that section a couple of times, it seems you mean F#, the 3rd of the IV, but I’m still not clear on what the point is of what you were trying to say...
2) The B. B. Box. Ask any two guitarists and you’re bound to hear 3 opinions of where/what the BBBox is... Guitar World (www.guitarworld.com/lessons/bb-king-lesson-soloing-movable-bb-box) and others believe it is R 2 3b 4 5 6 in the major scale, and R 3b 4 5 7b, and the Blue Note (5b), (both on the 1 2 and 3 strings, natch).
3) You say (in other videos), “If you don’t play the 7th, it isn’t the blues,” as in one must play the I7 IV7 V7 and not just the major chord alone or it isn’t the blues. If I understand you correctly, I couldn’t disagree more and I believe Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and many others would also disagree with you. All have written songs that omit the 7 and rely on the major chords alone.
I’m not trying to be a jerk; I’m asking honestly and trying to learn something. As for #1 above, your explanations are usually excellent. This one confused me. On #2, your thoughts on the wide range of opinion on the BBBox and how you come to yours would be cool. On #3, did I misunderstand something? I believe that the dominant plays an important role in the blues but the blues’ essence is in the tension between the 3/3b. I’d appreciate your further thoughts. Thanks for your work.

Personally preferred the sound of minor pentatonic, the mixolydian sounds too much like jazz for my liking. I hate jazz.
It's pretty useful for hard rock and psychedelia. My interpretation of this scale is similar to a Indian raga modal, hopefully you'll outgrow your distaste for jazz, there's great things that come from that genre.
