I had regular use of a 318i in the early 2000s and remember it as a lovely car. Not fast in a straight line but the handling was better than many sports cars I've driven. Fantastic balance.
Crazy prices at the moment, I test drove a 420i last week, £45000, I currently have a 2017 420i with around £10000 to pay off, but given the car is worth around £17500 private I won't be buying, 4 years ago I bought my 420i for £24000, 9 months old 3500 miles, lots of options were on it. Current prices are just way too high, they tried to tell me it is a shortage but I get the feeling dealers are just hiking prices to make up for covid.
40,000 pounds is cheap compared to Australian prices. We are hit with luxury car tax on top of GST which will be far more drive away price than the UK drive away price will be. Our 911 s drive away price is roughly $350,000 which is roughly 175,000 pounds, that’s why I have an M2 comp lol. New BM looks really great mate.
Saw one of these at my office car park...still not a fan of how it looks. But, thanks for sharing your thoughts about how it drives as well as the steering.

But I do a lot of driving for work, so this video really has reassured me I made the right decision and I’ll enjoy this car! I find it hard to believe that you're only doing 60 mph in some of those drive by clips, but we'll just keep quiet about it. LOL! Personally, I love the looks of this new 4 series Coupe, front end, included!
I recently traded in my Volvo V40 for a 420dx GT and very happy with it. PROS: Solid car and great brakes. Enough power in sport mode to push you back into the seat. In eco mode gas mileage is just over 40 mpg and it's a very comfortable ride (I live and work in a moutainous rural area). I have the brushed aluminum interior and the M sports seats, no regrets. CONS: My wife and teenage daughter complain that the back seat is too upright to be comfortable on long rides. The heater takes about 10 minutes to make a difference on cold mornings compared to the Volvo that did it in 5. I would like to have fog and cornering lights to see the edge of curvy mountain roads at night.
_Legal fun._ The new benchmark for manufacturers. Can the vehicle be pushed and kept on its limit without either killing you or getting you arrested. Like the MX-5/Miata, a vehicle with bags of _legal fun_ can be driven at its red-line without the aforementioned pitfalls of prosecution and/or death. Because, I think manufacturers are at the legal limit (safety, emissions etc.) with regards power, torque and top speed. I think manufacturers will have to look elsewhere, for another metric, to entice the buyer. _Legal fun,_ is where it's at!
Good point about the engine. Of course, more power is always better but the average driver who uses his/her car for daily commutes on congested roads doesn't really need it or maybe doesn't even want it. Yet they get a car that looks sporty and with decent enough performance to provide a little bit of excitement.
I listened to Joe's argument and felt it didn't substantiate the price. 40k for a 2 litre ENTRY LEVEL 4 series that does 0-60 in 7+ seconds (184 bhp lol!) is simply absurd, and this will be proven in the resale value. I believe this ballooning in value of cars is all due to people purchasing through finance and leasing. Higher pricing allows for larger monthly repayment prior to lease ending. I can't imagine why this car should cost more than 25-30k. It may look like a sexy coupe (to some), but the performance tells a completely different story. And as for the price of the M... I think I will stop my rant now...
Exactly, it wasn't that long ago when I purchased a 320i for sub 30k. It's the fact that everyone buys on finance that's causing these crazy inflated prices. You used to be able to get a new e92 M3 in 2011 for around £50k, the new M3 about to be released will be in the region of £75k!! A 50% price hike. I don't know about you but my wage hasn't increased by 50% in ten years.
Virtually every car maker makes you pay extra for paint. Even Tesla who offer many things as standard and have the shortest option list of all manufacturers.
@@SuperMacmac74 Not necessarily, the production cost of each color is not equal. Not charging more for paint would mean that the base price of the car would be higher and everyone would pay for it, even those who just want the cheaper base paint (regular black or white). Plus color is the biggest car differentiator there is. Some people buy the more expensive colors exclusively as they will be rarer and to flex their wallet. So by charging extra the manufacturers are actually complying with a market demand: the possibility to differentiate your car.
I drive an pld model (2018)430D MSport and bought it for the looks over a 3. Front end of this car is diabolical! Very good video Joe, one lesson that i have learn with the cars i have had, power is not everything. The weight, the fact that is not all wheel drive, the chassis and handling. And sometimes people like us cars fanatics :) we want always more power.
After buying one, I get the hate, but its unwarranted if your a BMW lover, once you take it out for even a test drive, I was sold asap, quick, comfy, not too much for a daily driver, I would have to say its the best DAILY driver I have driven in a loooong time, that engine alone is worth it, burn many cars stock off the line, in fact, I beat the shit outta a Corvette, which I thought they were quicker AND a NEW Supra, that was embarrassing for them despite being the same engine, BMW apparently understands quite well what they are doing. Great video, great car, love the FUNCTIONAL grille, the handling, the profile, the sound, the tech, I mean, I have to say its a 9/10 BMW if not a 10 for all around. I get the M4 is a "better" drive on a track, but I dont take the track to my shop, I take this guy, and its just perfect. I cant recommend them any higher, I do understand they are not as aggressive looking, which is nice in a way, you get to burn out others that have NO idea what you got under the hood.
Just so you know, the scratches in the piano black polish out easily with a bit of Meguires 205. I’ve got Paino black in my F30 Touring and it’s four years old now, but looks like new this way...

I really can't understand why I would swap my e92 335i (N54) which costs me zero per month to own for a 40-50k bill for a base model. I have rwd, 340 bhp and 500nm with a 0-60 of around 4.5 seconds that would just leave this standing and Im sure is more fun to drive. I have memory seats which are largely the same, cruise control and all that good stuff, and an older but still similar looking interior. As nice as a new car would be, I can't justify putting another new car on the road and getting rid of mine at these prices. The cost of some of these new motors is just too much IMO, and I even prefer the looks of the e92. Id have to get an M440i to put my old car in its place (and performance wouldnt be all that much different Im sure) and they can be getting on for 60k now, bonkers.
Just got my new 420i - loving it & the grill grows on you. I agree with your initial responses. BUT I hate the lane assist/steering intervention. Though you can disable it, the display re-enables it next time the car is driven. Can you turn it off permanently?
I wasn't going to watch this article as I assumed they would have "given" you a fully specified M Sport 440i which starting from £52300 is way beyond what an aspiring BMW 4 series owner could afford. I was very disappointed with the way you denigrated the earlier 4 series 430i as if finding the extra finance to stretch to a 6 cylinder model was a mere trifle. Now you will be long term reviewing what most people can aspire to his will be a great series of articles.

Love your review Jo. Thinking of upgrading to 420i in Australia for my next car. That's enough power for me and I don't need adaptive dampers. Actually love the arctic racing blue with oyster leather like your press car.😀
SUBSCRIBED: Loving this 4 series content recently especially the M4 you’ve done today. Driven the 4 series coupe for the last 4 years and I absolutely love it! Maybe it’s time to trade in for the new version.🤔
Got a 2016 3 series with the same oyster leather, so far holding up well. I use basic leather wipes to clean the seats every month or two and there isn't any staining yet although the driver's side bolster is starting to wear. Never used any leather protect or similar although it's possible the original owner did. It is possible to put visible marks on the seats more easily than you'd ever notice with another color but no problems as long as they are wiped clean and not left for weeks.
New signature logo (bottom left) for the channel, very nice. I might have missed it, but I wished the torque figure was given without going to the YesAuto video. Got the power later on in the video though. Would it be possible to have the o-100 km/h tested with the V-Box in a future video?
Joe - I know there are a lot of people that want a brand new car, but buying 12months old means the biggest part of depreciation get swallowed by the dealers - All manufacturers are charging more because they are hiding the price hikes behind how much a month vs the actual price of the cars. The Dealers then want buyers to take finance too - they get commission from the finance houses. BMW defo a premium brand and better quality than VW, but your opening comment also makes me choke at how much VW are charging for a Golf ! Nice smooth motor you've got hold of though ;)
Great video Joe and some fantastic points. I guess it raises a great point. Why do we tend to relate speed and power to a great driving car? Surely the most important thing is how a car handles and how rewarding it is to drive. Yes speed is fun, but you get used to it and then you’re often just left with a dull car that goes fast! I also like how the car doesn’t make you want to rag it and you can just relax and drive it (unlike say an M car). I find the same in my M340i. Sure you can have fun in it and go fast, but it’s also nice to just cruise around in and is a very relaxing place to be. That is quite different to the M lites I’d say. I always felt that my M135i wanted me to rag it lol.
Thanks for watching as always guys ♥️ What would you buy for £40k brand new? Do you like my new logo?

@@JoeAchilles1 you’ve moved from Denham? Will miss seeing your M2 Comp around but glad won’t have to make my eyes suffer looking at that 4 series front end 😂
Hi Joe I still prefer the 4 door, how long before the M3 lands
BMW always makes a sexy coupe! Love this car
Just got my new 420i - loving it & the grill grows on you. I agree with your initial responses. BUT I hate the lane assist/steering intervention. Though you can disable it, the display re-enables it next time the car is driven. Can you turn it off permanently?
Congratulations man
Thank you 👊
As always with BMW styling, it's beginning to grow on me.
Can you go over how to use some of the features, as when you buy online it's hard to know how to use it please
Wow! Joe - I really wish I had your job. Thats one of my favorite machines!
Great car Joe enjoyed your video like the colour and the leather nice combination worth the extra looking forward to your next video mate
Once Joe starts talking he means business mate! 🧏🏾♂️race this long termer with one of Mats king termers 😆he gets. You guys certainly review vehicle’s thoroughly 🙏🏾🎧
Could not be arsed to scroll through all the comments would be good to see how close it comes to your 7 for economy!
I’m no economy freak just wondering what full to full tank range would be.
Love that 900 mile 7 vid must have watched it 5 times
Great vid great channel
Love your review Jo. Thinking of upgrading to 420i in Australia for my next car. That's enough power for me and I don't need adaptive dampers. Actually love the arctic racing blue with oyster leather like your press car.😀
You do the best car reviews ever.
I had the same car just black leather from bmw Hailsham when my m135i went in for service work’ loved the car
SUBSCRIBED: Loving this 4 series content recently especially the M4 you’ve done today.
Driven the 4 series coupe for the last 4 years and I absolutely love it!
Maybe it’s time to trade in for the new version.🤔
Great video and review as usual Joe, looking forward to more content on this new 4 series
I want to know how long it will take to stain the seats. And how easy/difficult it is to clean them.
- Please Do Some POV Drives On Different Kind Of Roads Showing It's Daily Performance And Capability That We'll Actually Experience Please, God Bless
Great run through, but finding one if these for 3k down and £450pcm isn't going to happen.
Just placed an order on a 430d 🤟🏻
Fantastic video Joe as always!
I enjoyed watching the Video. My favourite BMW Coupe
how does it during winter season? and which winter tires are u rocking?
Love that colour. I think one of these with the power outputs of the M135i would be interesting.
How "did" you find driving the car on B roads Joe? Too wide? Too big?
So, steering wheel not too thick?
I love the look of this car, and also the colour combination. Does it have Apple CarPlay? The new logo looks great Joe.
Hi joe is there anymore to come on this car?
Yes update coming in the nest week or so 👌
Another amazing video!
Logo is excellent
