  • BMW makes major changes in the segment they created: The 2 door sports sedan. For 2021, BMW completely reimagines the G22 4 Series with a 48V mild hybrid system and much sharper dynamics that enable it to overcome sins of the past two generations, making it the gold standard once again. I really like the new design, you just have to see it in person, that will totally change your mind because the grill looks sooo awesome if youre standing right next to it and look from certain angles. The old BMWs now look boring to me with the small grille.

    I had the previous generation - at that time an instant beauty and looker - this one, I know the nose.....you know what? It is growing on me. If seen them on the road in Munich and the look good, better than I thought. Let's see how they sell.

    The car looks good! I hated the grille initially, but when you think about it, every other car it competes with is going to look boring in comparison. I love that it's always a deep discussion point. You can't ignore this car, no matter what you drive. That's what makes it cool IMO.

      The car looks boring! I'm a BMW 5 owner, but I would never buy a new 4 series. I'd prefer to buy an older model. The only thing that looks good on the new model are the headlights. BMW took away everything that made previous models look sporty and agressive. If BMW updates all their models the same way, my next car will be a Mercedes or Audi.

    Outstanding presentation. I purchased the M440i Convertible and absolutely love it. Just wish the Eco, Sport & Comfort buttons would all default to RPM in lieu of % and especially were positioned much more forward, so I don't have to take my eyes off the road to select a change while traveling. Subjectively, it could be considered a safety issue. Also, changing the Har Carman ie. FM to XM with a propensity to default to Spotify is annoying. To change back to XM the control button has to be pressed hard 2 to 3 times. I may have the dealership evaluate this. The $3700 headlights upgrade, etc. are a must as is to blacken the grill / mirrors and $150 upgraded top. The $500 charging is a waste when a $40 shelf purchase accomplishes the same thing. All in all, it is a great car to cruise on country roads.

    I know I’m in the minority here, but I really like what BMW did here. I like it because they did something different. I don’t want my BMW to look like every other BMW on the road. How many people stopped MM and asked him what he was driving? Most of the reactions he got were positive. If you’re going to spend 70K on a vehicle like this, aren’t you hoping to get that type of reaction when driving down the road. I know I do.

      And yet the interior is virtually identical to any other BMW. If they are going to introduce "controversial" styling on the outside then they should at least make an effort in the interior. To me, this is not a cohesive design and is a miss. This car is right in my demo and as it sits right now, I won't consider it. They need to up their interior design game, plus I think that the gril is ugly.

      The problem with this car, much like the 8 series, is that BMW doesn't really know how to do a GT car, which is what this has become. They have missed a chance to do something unique with the interior of their coupes. LC500 is the benchmark for cohesive design in the 100K and below GT coupe category and BMW misses the mark badly.

    This is IMHO the best 3-Series Coupe...er...4-Series that BMW has made since the E46. I mourn the loss of the tall greenhouse, but I like the "Baby 6-Series" (pardon e, "9-Series") design, because that's the car I like better anyway, and this one is less a hammer and more a scalpel.
    All that being said, I'd still rather have a Mercedes AMG E-53 Coupe. It has a significantly more elegant interior, I love the pillarless design, and it doesn't look like an evil Easter Bunny is trying to eat your bumper in a rear view mirror.

      it is bigger, heavier, more expensive..
      seat feels less comfortable, steering wheel is so chunky big now.. all 4 wheels also larger.
      and now its all wheel drive..
      u could save so much with used previous
      models available.
      only the technology & performance is better than the previous model.
      why would u still want it??

      Shin you just answered your own question. Why do you want it? You want it because the technology and performance is better than the previous model. I just bought one, it’s freaking amazing I can’t stay out of it. Only difference was I got the convertible. I think the seats are better, pretty much all of your knocks on the car I disagree with. What do you want to put 17 inch rims on it like 5 years ago? Bigger wheels = better wheels, I Love my blacked out 19’s.

    If you drive this car you will see why anyone would love it. Look what they did with the E450s...boring !
    This car has style...and the drive is incredible. It's BEST IN CLASS for the money.

    What I've noticed the past few years w/ BMW, MB and Audi is, the cars are engineered to be leased (not owned). Majority of people expect these cars will have costly issues once outside of warranty (while the domestics, Lexus & Acura are engineered towards long term ownership). Maybe better I say that German car engineering is focused on temporary perfection.

    I think you have to credit for BMW for trying to go bolder with the design. I think the nose is ok, I just dont like the rear haunches and the fact it’s pretty much identical to the 3 series inside (I like the fact they are sticking g to buttons). But for $70k... I would just spend more, wait and move up to the M4 or go for a C8 if it was my second/third car. In the end however, unlike me most people lease, so it’s all going to come down to the monthlies - that’s where all the games are played, especially with the low interest rates.

    You're absolutely right, 70k is a lot of money for a mid-tier 4er, that's current M4 money. Makes me wonder how far they're planning to push the M side of the family. Speaking of, whatyca think of the new M twins?
    As to your question, M, the Giulia is the only car I'd pick. The MY20 Quadrifoglio starts at 74k & my spec is at 77k. The question is, get a brand new MY20 with the updated interior? Or settle for a low mileage couple years old one and save a good chunk of money? What would Jesus do?

    Nicely optioned luxury grand turismo for $71,000? That's a steal. Comparing this to base 911 - or comparing optioned - the M440i approaches HALF what one will spend on a Carrera. And compared to my other dream GTs, the Bentley Continental GT V8 and the Ferrari GTC4 Lusso? There's a solid argument to be made that, for jet-setting across a few hundred miles without a jet, the M440i is all the GT one needs. I'll add that the M4 has always struck me as a tad OTT, a great sporting car for different tastes. I don't like the exterior styling. The snout is distracting and the profile, like its 8 series coupe big brother smacks of Mustang - not necessarily a bad thing (see 1970s and 80s Aston Martins) but not exciting either. And the Hofmeister kink is distorted into unrecognition. The 3 series is the better design. EVEN SO ... it's a fine car, well done BMW, and punches well above its weight.

    • @darrell9616
      @darrell9616 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would have to disagree. There should be something special about a good GT car that makes driving it an occasion. That isn't this car. Sure it's fast and handles well. But, there isn't anything special or unique about it. This isn't a bad car by any means, and it is competitively priced for what it is. But I'm looking at several other candidates before I'd consider spending 70K on this.

    I am an engineer and even though your great at explaining things, I don't understand what is
    hybrid about a vehicles that doesn't have electric motors powering the front 2 wheels.
    I own a M240i that has B58 engine, and a better pound to hp ratio, gets better mpg, and stock
    is 155mph max. Mine also does stop / start to save gas. please tell me there is something
    about the 48v that saves gas?

    • @MotoManTV
      @MotoManTV  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      HUGE point here about the cars we have featured on the show that have the 48v system: While, yes, they have the hardware to be able to improved efficiency, they are tuned for performance. This is the case with the multiple Mercedes we have featured, the Land Rover Defender and now this BMW. If I am reading the tea leaves correctly, they are iterating the 48v concept on more expensive cars - hence less focus on efficiency - and then we may see future models with versions of this system that are tuned for more urban, efficient use.

      Main thing I noticed about it is there is absolutely 100% full torque through the rev range. There’s no turbo lag anymore. It’s has quite awesome the gas mileage anyway. It is already at 29-31 highway and that’s fantastic for a 400 hp car.
