The grille that everyone is complaining about is what looks good. It’s new, bold, and stylish. What looks weak is the rear quarter window shape. BMW should have kept their signature shape there. Take a tip from Porsche, they have never changed the signature egg shaped rear quarter window off the 911.
Great video. This car is terrible value for money though. For £10k more you could get an entry level 911. Crazy.
It actually looks really good in black
Hi Joe. In this video and the last one on the BMW M440i you were able to test a blue and a black car. Which of the two colors did you like the most?
That spec is brilliant. Red calipers, full shadow line exterior, makes this Coupe look superb. Great coverage Joe.
You have never lived between 35° degrees of latitude. Black bakes cars between those latitudes.
Yes, but the grill. Oh my, that grill. :(
@@machtschnell7452 park it in a garage...
The front end of the m440i is very aggressive and gorgeous.
The car looks great to me, I personally love how aggressive this new car looks and as a previous non-BMW person I am placing an order on the new M4C.
exactly my thoughts, finally a BMW I like xD
haha true I the new models are the only ones I think are good looking. the old ones look cheaper but more elegant still somehow? I think the shadow line package makes a ton of difference in relation to that.
As a previous none BMW person I am placing an order, on the new M4C. Yeah right!
@@c3bam1 he literally posted his m4 months after his post 3 years ago loL?
That grill has started to grow on me. I like it more than the previous version. Very sharp and modern
I’ve just bought one of these in that exact spec and your enthusiasm for it has got me that bit more excited about picking it up. Can’t wait now!!! Really great review as always.
I've driven it, in white color. Love the handling, love the performance, love the rear, but will never forgive bmw for the grill. I will never get used of it ... and as you do Joe, I also respect your view.
Video and pictures don't do it justice. In person it looks great.
This is what I have said from the beginning. When I went to get my new M440i, xDrive Coupe, in black (black, in my opinion, is the color that looks best on this car) from the BMW dealer, I simply said…. WOW !
In the videos, a lot of shots, a lot of images, as you said, don't do it justice.
I've seen 'the grille' in a showroom (M4/M3). It looks absolutely fine. In all black it really works. Changed my view from initial photographs.
I liked it since I saw it. This is really modern and better than anything before.
I love how often Joe mentions that he’s 6’4 in his videos, so proud about his genes
Nothing to be proud of if you’re a petrolhead. I’ve spent years squashed into single seaters I don’t really fit in, and I’m only 5’10”!
It’s useful to know when you’re tall, many cars just aren’t comfortable.
Hi Joe I finally received delivery of my M340i. I got the San Marino Individual blue metallic paint at 6000 euro. I got the factory fitted carbon fiber roof at 3300 euro. I Gordon the Fiona Merino red full leather at 4800 euro. I cot the carbon fiber diffusor and m performance and carbon fiber mouldings at 5500 euro plus a whole lot of other extras. The car has just come in short of 90,000 euro. I have Michelin Sport 4 S non run flat tyres 225 front and 255 rear. This car is really really fast. Anyway I love it. Keep up your great and honest reviews. Photos to follow
Love these videos, Joe is one of the best car reviewers on youtube!
For sure. So pragmatic (but also passionated, we can feel it)
Am a great fan of your reviews. As I said, along with Rory, you are the best car presenters on YT. Thx for uploading.
Just hope he doesn't turn into a shmee, a show off in other words 😉
without doubt the best car presenter on any media source
I feel like I'm on a bit of a Joe Achilles rampage at the moment. Saw a video, watched and was really impressed with your presentation style, your honesty, and likability so I pressed that like ;) Noticed another associated video, and another, and I'm really enjoying your style. Who thought someone could make a 900mile road trip around England enjoyable enough to get through a 15 minute video? Keep doing what you're doing and reviewing cars that are within reach of your audience... I'm looking forward to watching many more!
I love the feel of a solid fast and heavy car.
I love the grill. The body on this needs a few more lines to give it some aggressiveness to match the grill.
Had this agreement with my brother the other day. Most car designers aren’t idiots. The new golf mk8 the new BMW grills, the new 2020 defender all look lovely irl and really catch your attention on the road.
The only people who hate it are keyboard warriors who are salty they will never have car less than 6 years old
The car looks great, perhaps BMW unveiled this now since they want the buyers to get used to the look of it. Perhaps they know they need the larger grille for upcoming electrics and their sensors? Maybe to appeal to emerging markets? Either way they figure it will grow on people. They look good in person better than I expected, though I prefer the smaller.
Joe your honest and complete review gives another perspective about the new 4 series. For the weight is really surprising how fast it is and economic not being an handicap. Nice one for being the first that makes all the difference.
Great vid Joe. Like the previous model, I think the gran coupe will sort out the three everyday issues with the coupe - stiff springs, boot hatch opening and rear seats. I’ve got the current 4 series GC and simply love it
Black is definitely the best colour. I’ve seen two in the wild, didn’t like them. Eye catching - yes, beautiful - no. There is a difference between growing non you and just getting used to it. Side profile without the kink it’s not a BMW but an Audi A5 coupe. But I am sure it’s a great car and drives very well. As an e93 owner I’m interested in the launch of the cabrio with soft top. Great video as always.
Trying to figure out this worldwide obsession with black...black paint, black rims, black everything, tinted glass, murdered out, mafia/gangsta style...does everyone want to be Batman all of the sudden, is there a Black Cars Matter movement I haven't heard of? Thinking about practicality, the only time a black car is clean is when it's in a showroom, under bright lights and being dusted off every 30mins, furthermore black hides most all the design lines and details. Under the sun, black accumulates more heat than a brighter color would. Black rims look like you're running steelies, or no wheels at all and let's be honest as soon as you start driving they get dirty, no matter what type of magical coating you apply. I know this because I owned a black car with black wheels, garaged, ceramic coated...loved the car, HATED the paint. IMHO, unless we're talking about a huge vehicle that needs to appear smaller/under the radar or a hearse for that matter, there's absolutely no reason for black paint. Each to our own I guess.
@@MrDimkur I meant for this car with this specific front design :-) I had multiple black cars and yes, black is a nightmare to maintain... Especially during UK winter
@@MrDimkurbro just had a 200 word rant about a colour damn
This is the correct spec. Thank’s for your videos, always enjoy!
The car is great!!! i just bought one and it’s absolutely gorgeous…
The all black spec definitely takes away from the utter wretched nastiness of the grill and front end in general.
Maybe it’s this spec but the grill has started to grow on me now. Great video 👌
It feels weird saying this but... that grille is actually growing on me (I know, im ashamed to mention it too)
Dude, you can get used to anything eventually, including abuse and torture.
4 years later and it has finally grown on me.
I have been fine with the grill from the beginning. We criticize manufacturers for everything looking the same...
I won’t try to convince someone to like the grill, but hate when some try to convince me that it’s ugly.
Haha totally agree. Same story every time a car is radically redesigned. First they complain and say it’s hideous, then by the time next gen comes out the same people talk about how beautiful the previous gen was.
Yes black. Black is the color that keeps my eyes from bleeding when I look at the front of this car.
the Black color does hide/ mask that grille.
Shit that grille is similar to the Bugatti , which is also ugly.
BMW instead of pressing the issue, just cut your losses and revert back. Don't let pride get in your way, do the right thing.
@@MrGreenelight Or you could just buy an M340I and stop whinging.
@@MrGreenelight that’s what im saying
@@MrGreenelight agreed. That grill will certainly increase Audi sales.
Y’all are so dramatic. Grille ain’t even that bad fam
Pick my M440i up in four days all being well. Slightly excited!
Awesome, bet you can't wait!!!
@@JoeAchilles1 Yup! My first ever BMW too after years of Leon Cupras and a 3 door, manual, Golf R mk7 - unfortunately, the mk8 just wasn't doing it for me so after much deliberation, the 440 won out over my other choices. Just slightly excited as it's in what appears to be the uncommon Dravit Grey! Glad to see you've managed to keep your head above water through such dreadful times! Keep up the great videos!
60k on the second hand market buys a lot of smiles that won’t weigh the same as a moon.
I loved the front from the very beginning and it looks stunning in reality
Just got mine this past weekend. Black with black interior and black rims.
Great review as usual. Thank you for the great content. I do like the 4 series and the grill is really ok when you see the car in real life. Wanted to buy a M440i xdrive but I will go for a M340i xdrive instead: I have a quite steep garage entrance and the 4 can barely make it, with the 3 no pb whatsoever. Beware of the front overhang of the 4. It is also has a little less ground clearance than the 3. Since I have a 6 year old the 4 doors will just be more convenient. Will go for this spec (full black) but probably with vernasco cognac leather. Ordering the car next month, I can’t wait! Cheers from 🇱🇺 Luxembourg
Great point with the overhang. You may have saved some buyers from something they hadn’t thought of.
Came across your review of the M440i in black.
Was really impressed with the spec and booked a test drive of one in Inverness.
I eventually bought it and it turned out to be the same one you tested so thanks for the great review.
Found another video of a BTCC driver ragging it. Not so impressed 😢
Being an owner of a 2015 335i M sport, I got to say that BMW did an outstanding job with the interior on the new generation. The exterior is pretty nice too. I saw one in person last weekend and I noticed the rear calipers look cheap. They looked like any other calipers on much less expensive cars, and cheaply painted. They should use the same type as the front ones.
People hate on cars when they can't afford it.
It is true! It's growing on me massively, especially in this spec.
Would definitely agree with the looks, when I first saw the pics I thought it looked horrible. Saw one in a petrol station the other day and it looks alot better in the flesh.
Awesome vid Joe I swear they just keep getting better and better :)
Jeez - £950pm + 4k down for an m4 comp is mental when you can get an m5 comp for £930pm + 10k down.. Queue the discount wars
All blacked out with red calipers❤️... In this spec the entire front is honestly gorgeous . The rear also stunning. EXCEPT.... from the A pillar back, no proper shoulder line followed, no character... I see a Genesis coupe between a and c
Black is the best choice imo. The grill is also less noticeable.
Looks so great w the blacked out grill and overall
The grill is starting to grow on me
I saw a 4 series with a cerium grey grille and it looked hideous. The grille isn’t sharp looking. It’s weird. Here in this video, the grille is blacked out and looks better.
Is it me or have new and used car prices gone through the roof. And this before coming out of Europe. Many folk are paying huge amounts on PCP and HP in the most troubled times!
I couldn’t do it again. Looking back paying silly money just to rent someone else’s car. I get that it suits some people. But paying 500 odd quid a month to rent a car. Not for me.
Yes, whilst I have no issue with getting a car on PCP so long as you can afford it. My dad was looking at the M135i and dealers were coming out at nearly £500 a month for a 1 Series. That’s just ridiculous
I managed to snag an LCI 18’ plate N55 M2 with the all important icon LEDs for £380 with 500 down. Happy with that deal!
@@adam11145 sick deal that! Hope you enjoy that sexy beast 👌🏽
Another brilliant review by Joe. Very informative and covers all the info from ride quality, performance, price etc.
Keep up the great work Joe. 👍
I have to admit in Black, the new grille does not look as ugly. Interior looks 👌
Been waiting for this video ❤️❤️
Of course the press car is black on black to hide that grill. Great review Joe!
The new M4 is the most gorgeous BMW in production now. Hands down.
Guys who criticise the new grille know nothing about car design. 🤷🏻
Great video joe 👍🏼👌🏼 always comes to your videos to learn about the new models
This grill looks so good. Its done a complete 360 on me. I love this package and for the saving over the m4 comp its very intriguing.
After a 360 you end up where you started. Just saying.
@@MegaFregel 😂🤣 exactly right. It is the same car same grill just my views have shifted.
@@cephasmakuzva alright. I still think you mean 180 though 😄
@@MegaFregel Maybe ne changed his mind while spinning 360 😁
The affordable and daily drivable M car should be it’s tag line , of course it’s an M light but more in reach for the average driver and probably doesn’t drink petrol for breakfast 😃
But, when you pull up next to the full fat M version, youll think 'i dont care about the fuel or the additional cost'
I wish it was affordable.
@@richiesteavenson3633 Depends to be honest , I watched LLF’s M5 F90 build video where he discussed how it ate through a whole tank in just the 35 mins of filming, imagine that , of course it was a stage 3 or so but still on UK roads at least you won’t ever get to experience the top end of any M anyway , because they truly come alive after the national speed limit 😅😅
@@rare6499 Well if you ignore rent ,mortgage and essentials you can probably work full-time and live in it , it’s comfy enough .
@@KUDANTOURAGE haha so true mate. Seat reclines nicely...keep the toothbrush in the glove box.
You right joe, it does look stunning
It’s mad that 3 years later the grills now look acceptable and normal. I can remember being revolted by it back then.
2:50 huh?? Lol those wheels go straight bananas! What are you talking about? Lol 🤣
*This is probably the best spec you could get for the new 4 series.*
It is great and beautiful car!!! I love it!!!!!people will always talk but the facts are there, it is a great and beautiful car!!!!
BEAUTIFUL CAR. This is coming from a C63 owner. I LOVE BMW. Cheers!
I don't mind the grille. I think the plate helps break it up.
Basically the only way to get around that grill to have to car in black, and then slap a big plate on. And the rest of the car would make it look beautiful.
People worried about the front won't buy it. They also don't need to worry because they'll only ever see the rear.
I love the grill with the shadowline package and hate it without. Overall I think it looks a lot more sporty than previous body styles
Loved your gesture control 😁
Much better in the black! Hides the huge grill! Not that I don’t like the grill but it looks better black on black!
Just a question Joe: you state that 1800 kg for a 4 series is really not acceptable, yet the car has blistering performance and handles so well that you admit it feels much lighter. So, what is the problem? A lot of weight of modern cars is due to safety and comfort standards and usually the way to reduce it is by using expensive materials such as carbon which would lift the price of the car substantially. Aren't automotive journalists these days a bit obsessed about weight? If the car performs well and handles well, it might just as well weigh 5 tonnes, no? Or am I missing something?
I think the blacked out look makes the front end look better and I weirdly think the front plate breaks up the front end a bit and adds contrast..
The car looks really good in this spec!
The proportions of this car`s exterior are little strange.
Great video and review Joe 👍🏼
Honestly, Im liking the looks, even with the grille. Just needs some bigger wheels to fill the arches
Great content Joe. Well thought out and excellent presentation lad. 🇬🇧👍🏻
Definitely the best spec for this car. The grill looks almost bearable in this spec but I still wish it was smaller - like inbetween this and the new 3 series.
I just got the 340i a few days ago and love it. The practicality over the 4 series sold me and I personally prefer the looks. Nobody expects it to be as fast as it is.
Great car, great grille and great review. I have a 330i M Sport and I agree that the Assisted Driving is so intuitive and very relaxing both in urban driving and the open road and no more speeding fines! It is interesting that the weight of the coupe is increasing whereas the G20 sedan is considerably lighter than the previous F30. BMW still make the best drivers’ cars.
Not coming round on the grills but definitely suits a darker colour to help them blend in a bit. M-light cars are great all rounders but always leave me wanting for more. I’ll stick with the F80 until I can afford a new M5.
Great video and review Joe! Haven't had the chance to see one in person just yet...guess when I take my 3 in for servicing soon, I'll get that chance.
Im definitely considering the new 4 series as my future car since there is a bmw driving center a couple of hours from where I live and I could take it for track days over there which sounds exciting as hell
Awesome video as always Joe, in homage to you my profile photo is me in my Joe Achilles inspired Oakley (Valve) sunglasses while parked up in my Seat Leon Cupra 290 LUX with panoramic roof, next car will be the Seat Leon Cupra R ST ABT as a result of your review of one in Wales a while back👍 keep up the good work pal, regards Loza
Haha thanks man glad you enjoyed it! Also mega to see you're a Oakley fan 👌 Mate I still think about that CUPRA today, what a bit of kit 🔥🔥🔥
@@JoeAchilles1 superb 👍 My perfect car is an RS6 Avant like the black one you reviewed in 2016 but the Cupra Leon St ABT might have to come first, you never know though if I can get hold of RS6 Avant for £30k!
Best looking car right now
...just as I was going for the Audi A5, I saw this BMW 4 series and it was an easy choice. The look of the car inside and quality inside - at last BMW have made a game changer of a car. Stunning proportions and design at rear, sides and front. Smaller grill would have made this car perfect. Ii think it beats Audi in terms of looks and thats saying something. Audi interiors are superb. Great review Joe - I agree the alloys suck with BMW on this
I love it in black, with oyster leather it'd look awesome. I'd have blue calipers to match the laser lights. Daily driver, perfect car and we'll look at one to replace our 440i
Awesome video Joe
I love my M440i Gran Coupe!
Banger video as always Joe!
Another great video from Joe. But I guess it is no surprise as they all are.
I liked the part on the autonomous driving. That's a well worth addition to the usual review. Maybe it is something to develop in the future.
An extra point for the very clean car inside and out at this time of the year.
I wasn’t a fan when first images came out but having come and seen this one I feel differently. Introduction of number plate actually helps a lot but this spec also just makes it look so good. Would opt for a 3 rather than 4 but still a good looking car in person.
To be honest, the appearance has grown on me. I like the C-pillar design. The shape reminds me a little of the 70s Chevy Chavelle SS, which is a fave of mine.
Yes, and unfortunately BMW abandoned the Hofmeister kink when they did not need to do so. Si sad BMW chose to imitate 70s GM and Infiniti early 2004b styling. In the 60s and 70s, there was no such confusion even possible.
@@machtschnell7452 don't get me wrong, the trademark Hofmeister kink is one of a few reasons I'd go for an M2 or and M5 any day, I dare say the M2 is the most 'BMW' looking BMW for such a long time and looks perfect.
For this G80 series I think BMW are perhaps experimenting with styling here and it is controversial, but I won't deny it has grown on me.
Looks like a c class coupe from some angles
I think the same
Another cracking video keep it up mate.
Nevermind the grille which I can get on board with the rear quarter panel is so bland and dull. Looks like an Audi A5. Where did the sharp lines go?
totally agree
Yep, it’s a German Mustang now.
Saw one in person, you are spot on.
An A5 has sharper lines now 😅
I hate the end of the window line where it goes up slightly. Always disliked that about the Audi A5 Coupe too. Great video as usual Joe
It is the one of the most beautiful BMW. It is small 8 series. And the grill suits very much to this color and the overall package. I like it very much. Each Audi has bigger grill than this one. Plus great b58 engine. They did very good job with this car despite all comment this was the best marketing move.
Great review again Joe. Any plans to review the M440d any time soon?
I'm looking for a grand coupe 440i xdrive in tanzanite blue of the previous generation car. I have seen the review on another channel I can't find one in the UK anywhere.
Great Video Joe👍
Great Vid Joe, also, thanks for Including some info on lease costs 👍🏼👍🏼
This all black is the first time I've liked the big grill tbf
Beauty is on the eye of the beholder I saw this car in the real world I think it looks great
Wrong about the back seat space. I have driven a camaro since 2013 and there is way less space in the back of the camaro, I have fit people taller than 6 ft in the back of my camaro, and I recently test drove the BMW 430i and there was a TON more space in the back.
