Marshalls are not known for high gain at all out of the box. Even a JCM800 is more ACDC than heavy metal. So they all need a boost anyway. Even my DSL is not that high gain. Fully dimed they can be relatively high gain but that's compared to a Fender not anything Mesa like. From the demo this has about as much gain as my DSL401.

yeah, me too. I just replaced my DSL401 combo with the 50w version of this head to pair with the 4x12 I also use. The DSL is good but a bit fizzy. This sounds more like the JMP Master model I used to have.
I kept hearing people saying it was a good clean pedal platform and harsh gets thrown around, I hear a Marshall, a vintage style Marshall, plenty of gain for that sound when you crank it. Crank it!
Great demo! I just put a Marshall Origin 50 combo on lay a way. The easiest way to make this amp an absolute Plexi is get a MXR 10 BAND EQ PEDAL boost the highs and mids, then boost the gain on the pedal a tad bit, that way your amp is still stock, and just use a greenback.
Not sure about the Origin but my DSL likes to have the Master volume on full and preamp us3d to control volume and a boost tondrive the preamp plus boost low end and mids slightly with an EQ in the FX loop. Gets a nice Plexi style sound and this amp is way closer to a Plexi so I think this should work well too, volume near max, gain low, booster before the ampnand an EQ. Most effective in the loop, that lets you really shape the sound. The DSL is a bit shrill and fizzy so I cut the highs and boost the low end. Tube screamer up front.
Great Review of this amp! Your playing really complimented the amp and vice versa. You answered the questions that bedroom guitarists want to know. Best review of the this amp hands down. Thanks!
Good job, you actually dialed in a solid plexi tone. When it comes to vintage, single channel amps the "more good" knob is the Volume knob. A lot of classic crunch tones are just clean channels played bone crushingly loud. I've seen a lot of Marshall amp demo's that sound terrible simply because they've got the master volume knob at 3. Oy... It's settled then, I'm gonna need to find a practice space outside of the apartment...
I always use the volumes in reverse on Marshalls. Master full, preamp low, boost with pedal, EQ in the loop to take care of any unpleasantness, usually cut/boost highs or lows depending on the amp. They sound way better with the power tubes working hard and the pedal takes care of the pre amp. So unless you can crank it on both volumes always set master near full first and use gain or channel volume as the actual volume control.
@@seanbrooks2583 can this amp be driven at lower power modes to get that sweet tone at low volume? Thinking of getting one but it would be mostly for practice purposes
Hands down the best demo out there! You actually show all of the amps knobs and what they do! Great Demo! Hoping to pair one of these with my 2020 les paul tribute that just arrived! Cheers Owen
Excellent review and playing !! Just got one ! The guy didn’t know it had been modded ! I plugged in and was like why is there so much gain it’s not supposed to have that much ! And the effects loop has been disable so I think it’s the Headfirst mod and the push pull is now set to when you pull it out it’s like stock left in it kicks in the gain !! A lot of gain !

Thank you mate! Very kind of you to take the time to comment. Make sure you have a power attenuator or very understanding neighbours to get that bad boy cranked up! Cheers!
Hey Dan, I have a origin 20 and love it. I also have a SV20 and I run them wet dry. When you start looking for a "proper" Marshall, check out the SV20, I wouldn't call it budget but much more usable than the big brothers. Got mine for $1000 and it has all the sound and feel of an SLP, doesn't push air like a big ine, but I'm not Bonamassa or Ritchie Faulkner so I can't use amps like that anymore. I'm an old plexi player from the 80's and they feel and sound incredible. Maybe you can get Marshall to send you one. I also just traded for the 2525h Jubilee. The whole studio series is great. Wish the had them 25 years ago, my tinnitus wouldn't be so bad. 🤘👹🤘
Recently I’ve thought about heading down that Marshall highway as well. This model popped up on my radar and I definitely am interested in grabbing one. I feel like a lot of the other demos of this amp seemed a bit stale and like they were trying really hard to get a good sound. You’re nailing tone easily. I’m definitely going to grab one of these and probably just ad a pedal in front to kick it a bit more and get a little modified modern tone mixed into it. Then again when you hit that 9:17 mark, it’s pretty damn close to what I’m wanting! Awesome video!
Thanks, good demo. Bought it and am very gratefull. Basically the sound through youtube is impossible so I checked the DSL comparisment and went for the origin although I liked the DSL more. But this is just great for anything. Tubes work with this mans setting instructions.
Loving this. Bought a 50w recently, and I can attest to the fact that all the nice tones @Dan Leggatt is getting from his 20, I can get from the 50 - albeit insanely loud!
two origin 20 = you can get a bit of volume going if needed but more tonality control esp if you start using different setting on each head i dont use the gain though pedalboard instead
I thought this was a very good review, with detailed insight and tips of this Origin amp, but once I saw that Lava lamp in the background, I just knew it had to be an EXCELLENT review! HaHa! Thanks Dan, Seriously, I learned a lot from your take ...
I bought this amp off the back of this interview and I really like it. Putting a greenback in my cab was borderline essential for this amp though. Took it from searingly bright to classic marshall grind.
I have heard people say you need to roll back the treble on the EQ and turn the presence up instead to smooth out the highs but it does sound pretty good.
Thank you for an easy transaction and making sure it arrived safely mate! It’s a bit overkill to have and not be gigging it but I’ll definitely give it a good home.
I have watched this review many times and getting something out of it each time that I missed before. An excellent review with fantastic sound. I'm pretty much set on this head and it's matching cabinet. Thank again.
I stuck an MXR classic overdrive with some EMG’s and this thing really rips. Very underrated. Also, this is my first Marshall and my first non metal amplifying my collection. This amp also pairs well will green backs and v30s for a thrash tone.
This was a great demo! I've been looking for an inexpensive backup for my Suhr Badger. You make great points about how Marshalls work in general that I think a lot of people doing demos skip over or just don't know.
Finally someone that’s honest enough to say it’s not for the bedroom guitarist! Seems most other demoers either live in the middle of nowhere or are deaf. That said it sounds pretty darn good. Best demo of it out there. Subscribed.
Yeah damn straight. At home I get this going in a shed at the end of the garden. Still needs an attenuator if you want to really crank it up later in the evenings.
It is refreshing to watch a review where the reviewer has taken into consideration what the amp is actually all about ,, reviewers tend to grab that preamp gain ,, pin it and then complain that it sounds thin ,, spikey ,, boomy ,, wooly whatever ,, here youve made the amp sound like its supposed to ,, its not a silver jubilee,, its not a dsl ,, its not a jcm 800 etc etc etc .. its an origin 20 and it sounds great ! If Marshall was going for a vintage sounding ,, affordable, retro looking amplifier ,,,,voila !!! Awesome review !!
I have the Origin 20 combo and I love it. I'm running it in tandem with a JC40, both clean, driven by my pedalboard. The 20C alone is nice, but the two together blend perfectly for me!
Hey Dan that was a really great demo. There was a lot of useful information in there especially as I’m about to buy one of these today. Cheers man looking forward to the next video!
9:16 Exactly what I thought. Maybe with a little boost in front of the amp, we got that "brown" that all we love. We really got it... Your review helped me, a lot, to my decision. TKS
Great review! I own one in the combo format. Indeed, it isn't suitable for bedroom settings. I owned decades ago a 50W head (1973) with the 8X10. This amp gives you a very good impersonation of the real thing. I do not play publicly any more (yep, I'm that old, lol). It can be used at bedroom level on the lowest wattage however, it needs a boost pedal (the EHX LPB1 would do; I use a Danelectro Texas Trouble between the guitar and the amp). But! It won't truly sound like wide open. It'll come close enough if you don't want to acquire a practice amp. After decades of trying practically everything, my at home setup is the Blackstar Debut 10 (must be heard to believe) or through a cab, (a good one makes a big difference), a EHX 5MM pedal amp with your fav pedal. In my case, the very affordable Boss DS-1 works great.
I'v had a bunch of marshall amps & bought this to do something different. I have a 4-12 marshall cab with 100 hundred watt 16 ohm 1970 eminance spk wired to the 16 ohm output. This makes the amp all most imposable to distort making it perfect for pedals in the studio (which is were it lives). I have tried it with a 4-12 20 watt green backs & it does the live marshall thing perfect. just my 2 cents.
Great playing, thoughtful insight and some incredible tones you pulled out of that thing. Would be interested to see what you could get with EQ in the effects loop.
Thank you 👍 I’m considering doing a follow up video featuring more pedals as I keep getting asked about good ways to boost it. If I do it, I’ll chuck an EQ in the loop too 👍
You do a great demo and explanation of what this amp is and what it is not. I have a Jubilee 20w and I’ve spent plenty of time in front of “plexi” Marshalls and this is a great amp for the money. And since there are a lot of these available used based on many people misunderstanding how to use them, you can score one for a great price. However, it does divide folks but you’d be hard pressed to find that “Marshall” plexi tone for this money in any amp out there right now. 👍🏻
I'm considering getting the Marshall Origin amp to primarily use with pedals. I have a Boss ML-2, HM-2 and an MT-2 pedal, and intend to swap between these pedals for my distortion needs. I do quite like the slight overdrive-ish sound you from the amp get with the gain at the low to medium setting. I really just want a good platform for my pedals, as I want to use pedals to create my sound and also be able to quickly and easily change between effects like clean and distortion. I've heard people say that the Marshall Origin series is great for pedals.
I'm hearing a lot of late 50s Tweed Bassman characteristics in this tone. With the gain knob in the pulled position this has a very nice 1987 X sound. It's a great budget amp head.
You said it… underrated!! I have the 50, put a power soak on it, it allows me to crank the master up to 7-8…Angus to Eddie!! RUN, don’t walk and get one before they realize it’s TOO affordable!! Great video!!
Have the 50w head and run it into pair of 100w cabs. Is enormous and is everything those old JTM 45s sounded like in 60s. It also does a great Bluesbreaker in this guise. Think Kossoff, Cream and Robson.
I bought the 50. Picked up a mojotone cab used for a great price. Picked up 2 creambacks and my pedal board sounds fine to me. Would i love a a super lead but for my budget it rocks
Dan: amazing playing, amazing style, amazing sounds, thanks for the video, it's definitely certain I will buy this amp... I was looking for info and I've really got it!
Just picked one of these. I really value your opinion. Mainly because I agree.😂. Some criticism is based around the idea that the bass is too clubby or there’s too much high end and so forth. I agree with your statement that this is a great amp with a highly interactive tone control. I does take time to get used to. I brought it home and let it sit without turning it on for about a week. I had other obligations. Since then I’ve had time to spend about 20-30 minutes at a time to play with this dude! I believe it’s important to have a couple of gadgets to help you get the most out of it. I have a speaker soak and a pre amp. That way I can crank it up without disrupting my kids from their bedroom gaming experience.😂 The pre amp allows me to have that third boost setting for the ZZ Top/Jake E Lee/EVH sort of thing. So yeah it’s the trendy sort of thing but it’s not a TUBE SCREAMER (touché)! Lately I’ve been pulling the gain down to 6-7 and the master on 8-9. It’s really amazing how different this is from diming everything on “eleven”. Anyway, hope this helps. Yeah. Apparently Mikel B is the only person/TH-camr who understands what a true plexi sounds like 😂(❤ya Mikel!!!). I share as heck don’t. But man this things sounds like a Marshall and a good one at that. Cheers!!!
There's only one way to play this, power amp driven flat out. control the volume using gain / guitar vol. Put a tube screamer in front, set to a small vol boost, nothing wild, and you've got Angus Young wireless tone nailed.
After watching this and the tone i bought one. Very very underated. Running through a two notes capacitor. Dound unbelievable. But Dan i get you on the low level. You have to have this amp cranked WOW. great review
Mate this is a great review. I'm looking for something to go alongside my Countess that has a bit more grit - but my playing does not compliment Marshall amps at all and have always struggled dialling them in but I am determined to find the right one...
Thanks man! This is a cool amp for sure, I can totally see that it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. For the money they go for used I don't think you can go wrong to be honest.
Thanks for the excellent demo. Just beginning Origin 20 research. Love it’s tones and now understand I’ll probably need a Two Notes (+$500 ish) to get what I want out of it at home. Have another couple tube amps that are also tending to justify a Two Notes.
Man this has to be the best most real to life demo I have heard of the origin 20 head! Thank you! I use one as my main amp and have it running through a two notes captor x with an oversized mesa rectifier cab running to front of house, and it runs through a cheap marshall 4x12 for my stage volume. I do however disagree with the comment on the effects loop. Yes you are driving the power tubes a bit but thay doesn't seem to muddy the time based effects as much as going straight into the front end. Either way enjoy man! Great choice for an affordable marahall amp
Totally fair call! I think I was probably a bit hard on the loop in this video. I just wanted to make it clear that it wouldn’t behave as people expected it to if it was run like I was doing in the video. But you are right. Sounds like a cool rig. I’m looking into the Captor X as I’ve still got the original. Some great features on it. Thanks for watching 👍
@@DanLeggatt you should definitely think about the captor x. It's great for silent recording..... though then again of you are running thr regular captor into wall of sound I guess maybe you aren't getting that much more.....
As you discovered- Volume is the key with this amp. At full power and master up, it's very good- not as good as actual NMV amps, but it's a lot of bang for the buck and 85% of the way there. At low/mid power and lower master like so many people want to set it, it sounds awful. I run both M20s and M25s with mine and tried a bunch of speakers, but don't overlook a G12H300 55hz , really nice with this amp when it's cranked.

I got the combo, sounds way better plugged into a 4x12 cab . I love it, cheers
ive had mine about a year now. Got the recommended 2x12 with it. Love it! Great vid too!
Great Review of this amp! Your playing really complimented the amp and vice versa. You answered the questions that bedroom guitarists want to know. Best review of the this amp hands down. Thanks!
Cheers Ryan! Thanks for watching 👍
Les Paul through a Marshall = Classic rock sound. I think the amp sounds good!
The very first Marshall since the JCM's, which I really love! (Opposite to my Silver Jubilee from 1987).
Thank you 👍 I agree with all the points you made. It’s still a very cool amp but I can see how it wouldn’t be ideal for everyone. Thanks for watching!
Great, to the point, demo. You nailed it’s features and what it is vs what it’s not. Just got my combo yesterday and I’m absolutely smitten with it!
Awesome mate! I was torn between the head and the combo but the head came up for the right price first. How do you like the speaker in the combo?
I have a origin 20 head and i love it. keep the gain and master pretty much always full blast and use the power selector to regulate volume.
Bet your neighbours love it! 😂
@@DanLeggatt even on full blast, half a watt is very manageable.
@@seanbrooks2583 can this amp be driven at lower power modes to get that sweet tone at low volume? Thinking of getting one but it would be mostly for practice purposes
@@benharper4942 its not super quiet, but its not unreasonable loud in the lowest power mode with the gain and master cranked.
@@seanbrooks2583 so you can get away with it as long as no ones trying to get to sleep😂 cheers mate, you dig the amp?
The AC/DC tone that I have been chasing for 40 years!
Hands down the best demo out there! You actually show all of the amps knobs and what they do! Great Demo! Hoping to pair one of these with my 2020 les paul tribute that just arrived! Cheers Owen
Congrats on the new guitar man! I think they will be a great match. Hope you like it loud 😂
Best review for the origin 20 on TH-cam. Well done 👍
Agree . This is a SUPERB and thorough demo done with class ! Great player , great sounds , excellent explanations . Made me LOVE the amp ! Can hear it properly here with some really good playing and proper use . Seriously looking for an Origin 50 head . None in stock at the moment . No used ones either . Thanks for the great video , bro ... very well done .
Thank you mate! Very kind of you to take the time to comment. Make sure you have a power attenuator or very understanding neighbours to get that bad boy cranked up! Cheers!
the price, the sound and your incredible demo
ordered for my 60th birthday!!!
an amazing sound
Came for the tones, stayed for the football to the groin
Thank you Dan for a great, detailed review! Just what I was looking for!
No worries! Thanks for watching 👍
Excellent demo of tones, supported by great playing. Just bought the Combo, used, and can't wait til it arrives
Why did you get the Origin if you liked the DSL more???
Loving this. Bought a 50w recently, and I can attest to the fact that all the nice tones @Dan Leggatt is getting from his 20, I can get from the 50 - albeit insanely loud!
two origin 20 = you can get a bit of volume going if needed but more tonality control
esp if you start using different setting on each head
i dont use the gain though
pedalboard instead
I absolutely love mine. I run it through a 23x29 plywood cab with 2 Celestion G12M's. So sweet.
I thought this was a very good review, with detailed insight and tips of this Origin amp, but once I saw that Lava lamp in the background, I just knew it had to be an EXCELLENT review! HaHa! Thanks Dan, Seriously, I learned a lot from your take ...
😂 Cheers mate! Glad it was a helpful video 👍 Thanks for watching.
Yes. Treble all the way down, use presence as treble. Master all the way up and use gain to add the growl you want
Nice one, Dan! Great to hear you're enjoying the amp. It's a really good one for sure!
Subscribed.
Cheers mate 👍
Thanks so much. Glad it was helpful. I do try and get acquainted with the gear before doing videos when possible.
Treble has to be turned all the way down, use tilt and presence instead :) Works fine for me and sounds smoother.
I have the Origin 20 combo and I love it. I'm running it in tandem with a JC40, both clean, driven by my pedalboard. The 20C alone is nice, but the two together blend perfectly for me!
Great video, playing, tips, and demo, Dan. You made the amp sound awesome. Thanks!
I'm with you Dan, never liked tube screamers...great in depth review!
We can start a club 😂 Thanks for watching 👍
I think that sounds awesome!! I been wanting one of these 20 heads for a while now
I got one for Christmas. I love it. Just wish it had reverb, but I guess that's what pedals are for.
Reverb would be a cool feature. I use the Hall of fame mini with mine.
@@DanLeggatt hi there! Congratulations for your review! Please let me confirm this, do you use the reverb in the fx loop?
hands down the best sounds I've heard from an Origin head on youtube... you just made me reconsider my 20 head with your tips ;-)
Cheers! Glad it was helpful
Hey Dan that was a really great demo. There was a lot of useful information in there especially as I’m about to buy one of these today. Cheers man looking forward to the next video!
Appreciate it man, thanks 👍
I have tried it with a 4-12 20 watt green backs & it does the live marshall thing perfect. just my 2 cents.
great review.....first time ive seen an accurate volume comparison....excellent !
Great playing, thoughtful insight and some incredible tones you pulled out of that thing. Would be interested to see what you could get with EQ in the effects loop.
Thank you 👍 I’m considering doing a follow up video featuring more pedals as I keep getting asked about good ways to boost it. If I do it, I’ll chuck an EQ in the loop too 👍
Best demo i've seen of an origin! Congrats!
Thank you! I’m loving it so far. Shame there isn’t any gigs at the moment to get it cranked up for real!
Great review!! Especially the Hans Moleman clip. Classic!
Personally I like the Origin over the DSL. Am I entitled to say so, yes goth both 🤠
DSL is on its way out.
Love my two Origen 50's in stereo with two 4x12's . They love pedals in front and back loop !
You should put the hm-2 into the fx loop acts as a preamp
I'm hearing a lot of late 50s Tweed Bassman characteristics in this tone. With the gain knob in the pulled position this has a very nice 1987 X sound. It's a great budget amp head.
Agreed, it’s such a cool amp for the money. Might not be bang on for a vintage Marshall but definitely gets close and has a bit of its own thing too.
the 1st Marshalls were basically copies of Bassmans with some EQ mods.....
@@yurimodin7333 yes they were and this amp definitely has some tweed bassman tones on tap...
Bet that can shake a few fillings loose 😂
I bought the 50. Picked up a mojotone cab used for a great price. Picked up 2 creambacks and my pedal board sounds fine to me. Would i love a a super lead but for my budget it rocks
I had the Origin 50 and had to sell it. Little to no gain. Just my opinion. I have the DSL 20 and love it.
Dan: amazing playing, amazing style, amazing sounds, thanks for the video, it's definitely certain I will buy this amp... I was looking for info and I've really got it!
Thanks for the kind words mate. I hope you enjoy it when you pick one up. Thanks for watching 👍
That way I can crank it up without disrupting my kids from their bedroom gaming experience.😂
The pre amp allows me to have that third boost setting for the ZZ Top/Jake E Lee/EVH sort of thing.
Cheers!!!
This was a really great demo of this amp! Great tones and awesome explanation of how the Amp operates!
Cheers Chris 👍 thanks for checking it out.
There's only one way to play this, power amp driven flat out. control the volume using gain / guitar vol. Put a tube screamer in front, set to a small vol boost, nothing wild, and you've got Angus Young wireless tone nailed.
Thanks, that was an interesting review. Nice playing too btw.
Cheers 👍
Excellent review
Best demo of this amp ever 👍🏻 great playing man thanks
Very good demo and comments…. and playing. I bought one partly based on this.
Great demo. Just bought one!
Im happy, put a SansAmpG2 and a Digital Delay and Baby Im ready to rock.! Origin20w is very nice indeed.
