      I have a question, I have Origin 50 combo... you put presence and treble at max (okay, you set tilt at 5) - how come it's not harsh and fizzy? I have that problem with my Origin...

      It's probably the speaker, I use the Torpedo Cab M with the simulation of a Bogner 4x12 loaded with greenbacks. For my taste, greenback speakers are the way to go with Marshall amps

      @@TheGuitalian sounds great! I just got one. What settings are you on for your opening lead solo? Sounds perfect! Also, have you tried the fx loop? Mine drops volume dramatically and doesn’t sound good at all. It actually works better as a volume booster for solos if I only put a clean boost pedal in the loop. Otherwise, it’s useless

      Most of your tone comes from pedals which you covered very briefly. I wish you would talk more about which pedals you are using and where are you connecting, front or back? I bought an Origin 50H and it doesn't sound like most of your tone. Thanks

    The tone you got at the 5:00 mark is a great tone. Especially, for a sub $500 20watt amp. The kids on a budget, or even adults wanting a bedroom amp are in a GREAT era of gear. Absolutely, nothing wrong with this amp. And, if you're good with a soldering iron, Headfirst made this amp sound beyond spectacular. Watch that video, and you won't believe your ears, and what's actually possible with a 20w amp.

    Great review! I think the idea of an amp like this being for a "mature" player is a really great point. I remember as a kid playing through someone's single channel classic Marshall. I had no idea how to handle the amp and why the older guy I was jamming with sounded so much better on the very same setup.
    I hadn't yet developed those dynamics, pick attack, or *feel* that can really bring the best out of a low gain single channel amp.

    Just got to play a 20 watt combo. I agree with the review completely. I think the best way to describe the amp is touch sensitive in the manner of Joe Bonamassa, Roben Ford, or Larry Carlton. Using the guitar volume and tone knobs and pick attack changes the sound dramatically. Want clean-ish? Back off the volume and your attack. Want more gain? Harder attack and more volume. Want more still? Take your choice of boost, over drive, distortion, or fuzz pedals. Most pedals were designed around these amps to begin with.

    I like the amp, I have the 50 watt combo but I removed the amp from the speaker cabinet and I have it installed in a head cabinet on its own. I have a Randall for Metal, for everything else this Marshall does the trick. To optimize the gain, I have an attenuator. That way I can keep the volume at a reasonable level. None the less I like the tone, distorted or clean.

    I was told by Marshall that the Origin 20 and 50 are both A/B circuits, both use 3ea 12ax7's and 2ea EL34's, but the 20 puts out much less power because it's power-tubes run at a much lower voltages, and so will see longer power-tube life. and a pedal platform, I like it! and I have well over 30 vintage tube amps!

    Finally someone who knows how to handle this amp^^ So many "reviews" where they dont really are able to get good tones out.
    I have it myself since 2 years, its really versatile. I use it for Hendrix stuff nostly but it can do a lot.
    The only downside for e is that its abnormal loud. Even on 5 Watt, it wont be possible to play alone/without the whole village listening in.^^

      @mrt7476 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@gretzkyan sure. An EQ pedal would get you full control over all frequencies - much more than you could on the EQ section of the amp. When you boost the volume on the EQ pedal (when the amp is already overdriving) you will push the tubes even further, and get a more aggressive drive-tone. Try it! The Boss GE-7 is cheap and does the job.

    Had the 20 but got rid of it and am now considering getting another one and modding it. The cleans are really good on this amp as well as a basic / lighter crunch rhythm for classic rock when pushed, but the circuit just didn't have enough gain in it when I need to get up into that seering solo territory to cut through the mix. "Headfirst Amplification" in Australia created a JCM mod for this thing that sounds AMAZING which I'm now considering...

    For me, the one I had did not break up and saturate like my Plexi replica. It was kind of brittle in the high end and losse in the low end, which would be by design. It would have been good for a edge of break up dynamic tone though, especially at the price. My Plexi sounds quite old school, but the O20H was even more old school like early JTM I guess. I just ordered a mini Silver Jubilee head for more modern tones and will not mod the Plexi to do Jose mod type sounds, so I have both (I think if I mod the Plexi to do more modern sounds I might lose some of the Plexi-ness, so I will leave it alone).
    Italian huh? My dad's family were from there. Brescia where they had been for over 1000 years after travelling all the way from Bergamo lol. They moved to England in exile during the revolution. We are in NZ now. We mostly forgot the lingo, but not the cooking and eating.

      @@unabonger777 Yeah, I have a bunch of old Mullards in NOS condition, plus some old 6CA7s etc. However, providing the tubes are working as designed, they do not make a huge difference brand to brand etc. Far more of the tone and character of an amp is in the circuit design and component values etc.
      Check out the changes this Aussie fella makes to the circuit to get it to sound more like a hot rod JCM800, which the OR20 does not really do due to the circuit being so different to classic ones, i.e. OR20 does not have same the preamp stages, plus it is not fixed bias. Tube changes ain't going fix that. th-cam.com/video/Q_hiXjOS1Y8/w-d-xo.html

      @unabonger777 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@aquilarossa5191 In my experience tubes can be the difference between sounding good or not. Yeah, if you don't like the character of the amp tubes won't help. You aren't going to get power tube saturation out of a pair of EL34 running at 20 watts anyway, so the tone of this amp must be in the pre-amp. I don't see anything better at this price range, though. It sounds pretty good.

    • @aquilarossa5191
      @aquilarossa5191 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@unabonger777 I am not too familiar with the exact points of clipping in a OR20, but generally you can get a pair of EL34s to clip in a low power config. A common way is called power scaling, or voltage mods. It reduces the clean headroom of the valve, so it saturates earlier. That's how builders get power amp saturation out of lots of amps that have a low power mode. The principle can be seen in reverse with higher voltage. Clean headroom for a pair of EL34 can be as high as 60 watts, or higher headroom in a 18v overdrive pedal is another example.
      The FAQs from a mod maker explains it quite well. londonpower.com/power-scaling-faq/

      IIRC, early Hendrix was JTM 45/100, which was Marshall's first 100W (actually 80W but peaks close to 100?), and also used KT66. It was 68 or 69, maybe late 67 when he switched to the Super 100 (EL34).
      If I got any of this wrong, please correct.
      JTM 45/100 was used by many in the mid to late 60s, and that's the tone I'm after; hoping my inbound Origin 50C gets me there. If not, next up Ceriatone.

    This is the best video. Sounds great. I’ve tried to record mine, I have the origin 50h, but it doesn’t sound very good when i record it, in the recording it doesn’t sound the same way I hear it.
    I mic the amp, use a 4x12 cab, sure 57 microphone, focusrite 3rd gen interface, epiphone Sg standard, FL studio. I don’t know what is wrong, maybe it’s too loud still at 5w, maybe the mic is too close, maybe it’s my interface, maybe the mic isn’t good enough, I don’t know. Thank you

      Hi Don, thanks for your comment.
      Regarding the recording issue, I don't think it's the gear, unless something is broken. I suggest to you to keep experimenting with the mic placement until you get the sound you want. It's not an easy task cause the mic placement does massive differences on the final sound. Cheers

      The 20 is right on that edge of being not loud enough but the 50 may be too much. The tone of these amps jump in at high volume. Smaller clubs it would be ok, but with louder/bigger crowds, you might have to mic it. Just depends on where you play. For band practice, it definitely will hold its own. The cranked 20 will get you that tone, but the cranked 50 might be too much

    • @TheGuitalian
      @TheGuitalian  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on your expectations. If you want a full sound like the one I’m getting on this video, yeah, it will be too loud.
      The thing is that if you use a 12 inch guitar speaker it will always be loud if you want that typical full guitar sound, especially on lead and crunch tones.

      @@matt926uk1 Seriously though, no I haven't. Couple of reasons: 1. They are in many cases more expensive than my amplifier, sometimes by orders of magnitude. I'm not that rich. 2. I find it distasteful and silly using digital to record analog. There's a reason why we use tube amps and its not because they are practical. I'm sure digital can sound just as good or close enough as makes no difference - but it won't FEEL like analog.
      That said..
      I was talking to Kid Anderson recently on here about his setup in his recent Greeny tribute:
      th-cam.com/video/gHNB-XYcm_g/w-d-xo.html
      He's using my favourite amp (a 70's silverface) dimed in to an OX and the recorded sound is all IR. In fact he said he frequently doesn't even use a speaker in the room for recording.
      I can't deny that sounds great.
      I just don't like it. :P

      @@cgavin1 That Albatross cover does indeed sound great.
      Fair enough man If it's not your thing.
      For me, recording at home it's the best option, I can't play too loud but love valve amps, I think they still sound great used like this (slightly better than my helix) but I agree in a perfect situation you'd want to be all analog.
      I have a captor x and I run various valve amps into it and out through my studio monitors, I think it sounds great and I'm having a lot of fun anyway.
      I do think it's a bit silly having a valve amp and only turning it up to 1 or 2, that's like buying a ferrari and only driving at 30mph lol.
      I don't know about the 'feel', it's supposed to be there with them but with latency and everything it's a different experience, not the same as being in the room with a roaring amp and having the guitar and speaker interact.
