      I have the dsl40c creamback and the 50c origin which I like it doesn't have those dsl highs, I appreciate lower gain amps pushed a tad more. If i want evh i go the dsl or higher gain. It has that plexi bell like tones with zero fizz:)

      I am quite surprised that the 10inches speaker gives more cream and bass than the 12. Is it the cabinet effect or tubes vs solid state circuitry ? Anyway Origin for vintage, DSL for modern tones . I play vintage. Johan , how do you compare Origin 20 with 2525 Jubilee ? I used to have the 2525 but sold it , back to my Vox AC15HW1.

    honestly the DSL sounded real good. A lot more clarity. Some might find it too trebly, but you can roll that off. I never liked the fizz on the DSL i had Rented. Ultra gain was toooooo much. Sounded good here. Origin was good, but sounded a little like a blanket was over the speaker. Vin30 would make it sound great I imagine.

    Both sounded good in their own right, but I far preferred the Origin if I had to pick just one. The difference to me was even more pronounced with Simon and the single coils. The Origin sounded so sweet and creamy compared to the brightness of the DSL. The DSL would probably cut more in a mix, but I go for the Origin. You keep tempting us with that Amos V. There was a period in the 1980s when Epiphone had a thing with Gibson explorer type headstocks. Kramer, Jackson, and Charvell guitars were all the rage. They all had pointy, 6 inline headstocks (then came the pointy reverse headstock craze for a few years). I think Epiphone borrowed the Pointiest Gibson headstock style to stay relevant . Epiphone made some strange guitar models during that time. A friend of mine had an HSS strat style epiphone with that explorer type headstock. They made Telecaster type guitars as well.

    Johan, not sure how this amp slipped passed me but tonight I played the Origin 20 combo amp tonight at Guitar Center, then I tested out the Vox AC15C1 and Fender Deluxe RI. I was completely blown away at the tone palette coming out the Marshall Origin 20. I thought I was gonna buy the VOX AC15 but now I am not sure sure. There is something magical about Fender Guitars through a Marshall amp that is next level greatness. I used my tele this evening and it was magic and also love the fact that it was simple, no effects other than some gain (perfect for a pedal board) Another bonus feature was the 3 toggle High/Medium/Low output switch, gong from 20w-3W-0.5W. Just WOW, Marshall has really stepped up their game with this series

    • @cgavin1
      @cgavin1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@oscarmejia8495 Yes it is. The 20 is cathode bias. The 50 has a trim pot. People seem to be opening these amps up and seeing mosfets and IC chips and crying foul but this amp has power scaling, DI (which is honestly pretty rubbish) and speaker emulation. The only criticism is the input headroom is pretty big, so if 'plexi' tone is your goal, you will need to punish it with a pedal or two to really gun it. Personally, I have found that the amp distortion is wonderful (in full power mode + boost engaged) but you will be need to dime the master volume and that means pushing serious DB's. Its crazy (painful + tinnitus inducing) through a half stack without a boost or overdrive pedal to do the heavy lifting. Actually louder (in terms of sheer BAMF) than my AC30.

      Could maybe be fixed with a larger mid pot, tgen you have more flexibility with the mids. I did this to my marshall clone, very good for fine tuning. Go to 100k or 250 k mid pot..
      You can see it in action in the Duncan amp tools tone stack simulator.. At 1 you have less mids, at 5 like its cranked now.
      For less mids stays between 1 and 3 on the mids..
      For the DSL one could do thecsame pot and stay between 5 and 10..

    In this format the Origin really nails the classic JTM 45 type fat tones BUT you never took advantage of the DSL20's fat tones available on the Ultra Gain channel with the gain dialed in at around 3 to 4 on the gain knob and backed off to about 7 or 8 on the guitar volume. The DSL20 is one of Marshall's most versatile little guys once you know how to take advantage of the abundant array of sonic potentials it's capable of easily delivering.

    I think it depends a lot on what you want out of the amp and what kind of player you are. If you want that vintage sound, and don't need tons of gain from the amp, the Origin might be your best option. I noticed you were on the clean channel on the DSL for almost the whole shoot, only switching over to the distortion channel (red light) for a moment. That was the moment when I said, "That's what I'm talking about!" I have a DSL 40c, and I tend to use it either full-clean or with a lot of gain, using a pedal to push the clean if I want some crunch from it.

    The DSL sounds more "clinical" -- you can hear each string in a chord and the overall tone has a nice bite that no doubt would cut through the mix in a live setting. The Origin sounds great, almost JCM800-ish in how everything is warm and buttery, which is ideal for rhythm. The solution obviously is for one guitarist in a band to use the DSL, and the other use the Origin. =)

    This is a very interesting comparison. What really stuns me is how good 'Amos' sounds through either amp. The single coils and the DSL just aren't a great match to my ears. But wow...that Epiphone is a killer sounding guitar! Thanks Johan!

    Love both amps.....I own the new Marshall DSL100 Watt head, sounds pretty amazing , although the eq section was better in the old DSL...but cranked up thru a 4x12, it's a beast!...

    I have the Origin 20 and had considered the DSL but just did not like the DSL tone at all, sounded too cold and sharp,(might have just been that particular amp tho) the Origin just sounds more classic vintage IMO.

    I have the dsl40c. The first thing to do is chunk the 70/80 speaker (its not as bad if you break it in) for a vintage 30 or greenback. Then roll the tubes, I'm using Mullard and Genalax, you'll find some awesome Marshall tones that make the price tag for the amp and upgrades seem dirt cheap.

    The origin definetly has a SOUL while the DSL is clean as a wistle. If you want to rock your heart out the origin is the bomb for that but if you want a cleaner tone with a versetile playability on a saturday with the band then the DSL20 is the thing for you. Personally, the Origin resonates with my soul. It would be awesome to just rock my heart out with it.

    If you’ve got a tele its just a matter of taste. I prefer the the origin cause highs are more tamed but the dsl offers more clarity on the expense of having to dial back the tone knob most of the time. On the other hand the humbuckers need the extra trebly sound of the dsl, the origin makes the flying v sound way too muffled to stand out in a mix. Also the dsl appears to have a way bigger headroom than the origin which should also be taken into account.

    The DSL is super bright and grating, all due to the speaker. Swap that Seveny80 out with something decent, and it'll sound better. But I'd still go with the Origin.

    Why did I watch this? I was perfectly happy with my DSL15 tone. Hearing these side by side...the origin sounds so much better. It's smooth and creamy.
    I want to go out and buy one now! As usual, great video. Keep 'em coming!
    I'm happy with my DSL setup. I replaced the stock seventy80 speakers in my cab with WGS speakers. It made a huge difference.

    I have a dsl and to me the origin sounds a lot warmer here. The dsl seems brittle on the top end but just roll the treble back and turn the mids up. I also cut a bunch of highs with a mxr 10 band eq.

  • @chucklakeridge7944
    @chucklakeridge7944 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had to go with the DSL20CR when I was looking. Liked the Origin 20, but found it was a one trick pony and the 1 x 10" speaker removed frequencies you cannot dial back in, whereas the DSL clean/disto channels give some options and replaced OD pedals. Now, if I were to level up wattage, I'd pick the Origin 50 over the DSL40. Weight is one benefit, but the bigger cab and 12" speaker open her right up. I just don't need it (yet!).
    On the DSL20, first day I swapped out the 70/80 speaker and it made a big difference. Tried different speakers - Greenback, Creamback Neo, Swamp Thang and Tonkerlite. CB Neo was perhaps the traditional best fit, but settled on the Tonkerlite because it suited both channels, but also gets louder before saturation on the clean.

    I gave a dsl20 combo on loan for the next month. Honestly it’s a really good amp. I keep reading about the Celestion 70/80 being a crappy speaker but I find it to be very good and it’s not broken in yet. It’s sound fantastic turned up loud but I can still get great tone with the master turned down on the low wattage setting.

    • @dingusfuzzklonnkt2755
      @dingusfuzzklonnkt2755 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A greenback or warehouse veteran really adds to the overall sound quality of the amp. The 70/80 isn't a bad speaker but it kept the dsl series in the target price area. Loading it with a greenback or creamback would have added atleast another $150 -$200 on the amp. That's now putting the dsl40c with a creamback close to $1000 after taxes. That's a lot to ask for an Indonesian made amp. Buying a used dsl40h and finding a used 2x12 v30 thats broken in showcases how great the amp is for under $600.

    Again, as usual, nice one man. Although, whatever switch you flipped at the 4:min mark (on the dsl. Rhythm to lead I would imagine) is how they should be compared no? Up until then it was difficult to assess what the dal had to offer. I will keep watching. You rock friend!

    I only briefly saw the Origin settings, but I found what I think is the best for these amps. Master 10 - Boost on - Gain 2 to 4 TMB according to your ear and guitar. Control volume and break up with your guitar volume. I didn’t care for the preamp distortion, but this is a different amp with the MV cranked!
