@Oliver McCall I don't agree. There were many incredible shots from both sides (especially precise, touch play). XX played really well, at his normal level, I was almost sure that he would win, but Pitchford had simply his day.

give me example of aggresive play of Liam... I've seen Liam put xu xin to sleep with its slow pace and surprised with sudden acceleration, nothing more, just an average match
@@andrzejzet4625 Liam backhand changing direction switched off Xu Xin in so many points. I think that is the right tactic to play against left hander
The sheer impudence of that windscreen wiper inside out forehand against the world number 1 at 8:45 Xu looks at it in sheer amazement. Cracking match to watch- both players playing at the very top of their games

Anyone know when player names must be submitted for 2020 Olympics? Imagine the difficulty of Chinese coach having to decide which players he will be sending in male and female categories

This might even be a bigger surprise than when he beat Ma Long in the 2018 Bulgaria Open. Liam’s so unpredictable lol, he’ll beat some of the top 10 and then lose to some no-name players, and then repeat
I would say so because Ma Long wasn't fully fit, he went off to have a knee operation after that defeat. Xu Xin is in rude health and great form but Liam beat him fair and square. This was the greatest win of his career by a mile
That's exactly it. Xu Xin got a habit to lose to some maverick player like Gauzy and Pitchford, but is extremely consistent to thrash very young players

The Jayser I agree. He also played really well against Ma Long in the 2016 Olympics, giving him a big scare and being one of the first to get 6 consecutive points against him in a while. He beat Boll in 2018 too, and has a really bright future. He just needs to become more consistent lol
@@thomasliang1755 He needs to handle pressure better when he isn't the underdog. A few months ago he climbed as high as 12th in the world and then the weight of expectation seemed to affect him a bit and he slipped back down to being outside the top 20. Last week at the English Nationals, where he was expected to win comfortably, he started very tight and lost the first two sets to Paul Drinkhall. This game was easier as there was no pressure, he was expected to lose. To be a real top player like Boll e.g. you have to be able to handle that expectation and perform consistently, tournament after tournament, whatever the pressure. I think that's Liam's real challenge. We know he has the talent, we can all see it - the mental side is just as important.
I am watching Xu xin matches for a while, but this is the first match he lost. Unbelievable

Before I even clicked on this yesterday and before I saw he went to the finals, I had a feeling that when he gets up high in tournaments, Pitch brings it. XX was actually outplayed here, no doubts he brought his A game as well.

Pitch was absolutely fucking mental. His shortgame was on another level today and often he would aim his killshots for the short side of the table, a tactic typically used by Chinese and one I see more often off late by European players. That and in general great placement was key today. Pitch has so much potential but was not very steady in the past, I hope he can be in future and not fall short of his potential like so often in the past.

First time i saw Liam playing, i was thought this guy gonna be one of the world top because his impressive backhand. Since then i have not seen his forehand improment. Until he move to Japan T League , his forehand now is really amazing also. Now he play smartly. Impressive.

Pitchford executed an incredible plan here. Bobrow said it during the match, even when Pitch was putting it to the middle, XX was nervous because he didn't know when Pitch was going to send it to a wide angle. Pitchford's placement and unpredictability was incredible. He has exposed a LOT of weaknesses to XX's game. He was pulling off shots that even ML never does. This match is worth watching in full.
Liam was nearly perfect, Xu Xin was very good. I love Xu Xin, but big big respect to Liam Pitchford! Congrats! Hope he win this tournament now.

Liam's pitchfords forehand fades were incredible. He always went for xu xins backhand which made xu xin frustrated and used the backhands to always rip the ball and not use for keeping it on the table. Pitchford burned xuxin manytimes too. Deserved win for pitchford

Fabulous game ...Liam was fantastic ... Xu in the best shape was defeated. Amazing.
Best form but the frenchman did the damage . Very hard match and now luck for Pitch to secure close games . Xu was not at his best this match and this is interesting in TT , you can beat stronger opponent and lose to a weaker one so every time go and play at your best you never knew what you are capable and everything is possible if you get the grip over opponent's mind.
Great match. One of the best BH in the game but his FH was working today!
After the second set...very good game playing close to the table with fast closures and blocks on the table ... compared to a month ago it seems even better in terms

I saw Liam for the first time and thought that winning would be on Xu’s hand with no doubt before seeing Liam’s keen back hand stroke. In addition It seems Liam is very clever player as he figured out that Xu showed weakness on the ball to the body. Then his strategies were very clear, deep back hand stroke to Xu’s body to tie up his foot and then strong fore hand stroke to opposite direction... these combinations were absolutely stunning and worked well... because crowd walker eventually slipped out...

Xu Xin is my favorite Chinese player...I have always said Pitch and Gauzy in my opinion are two of the best in Europe today. The problem is the inconsistencies that both have at times which Pitch did not have today. Both are very smart players. Fantastic Match.

This is a great unbelievable tournament. Samsanov was in great form and beat LGY. Liam again in wonderful condition beating Samsanov and Xu Xin. WCQ in great condition beating ML, while FZD beating WCQ!

Fantastic match. Liam deserved this, he was putting XuXin constantly under pressure. For what I have seen, he has fantastic FH flick that just puts opponents off balance, BH diagonal is a killer. Thumbs up, looking forward to see the following tournaments...quite excitting with Gauzy, everlasting Timo Boll to be competitive with great Chinese

If this was the standard for round 32/16/8, I'd be satisfied. Sadly, its 1/2 and probably the final is gonna be like that.
PS: oddly enough, some old ittf videos are now 60fps ( I remmeber watching Hugo beating Fan Zhendong with this video quality, now its 60fps o.O).

@@sumitshrestha2986 These are probably the last olympic games of ML due to his injury and age. Xu Xin is only a year younger, but he didn't have an injury that affected him to Ma Long's grade, so he can probably play one more olympics.

Wow! Amazing win for Liam. He has been playing above his standard throughout this tournament. As for XU Xin, instead of playing like a super man, he seems more like a mere mortal with numerous unforced errors - still very hard to beat of course. Well done Liam and good luck!
He hasn't played above his standard - he has shown a standard he is capable of achieving when at his best. He was getting close to this a few months ago and then I think the pressure got to him a bit and he dipped again but now Liam is looking better than ever. He looks like he really believes he can beat anyone - on his day when he is timing those backhands, he can.

Liam choosing to return serve to the backhand of Xu, or a bit to the middle was probably one of the smartest tactics he used, Xu loves to go to the forehand as the next shot and this hampers him. Also very good execution and patient to play the right balls, didn't give Xu xin the rhythm he typically enjoys.
Congrats to Pitchford! Xu Xin played amazing tennis until now. Very good form Xu Xin but Simon Gauzy had brilliant play the round before and Cloudwalker was a bit tired may be , great opposition and now a great day for Pitchford he striked where it counts every single time ... even in fantastic form there will always be a player that can have the best of you in some given moment in time . I love Xu Xin's game but Pitchford was there to punish every time when the score was close and important. The focus of the under dog , fearlessness and hunger lead him to the victory.
Pitchford's strategy works really well. He flicked and punched to the XX's FH side, wide and long. Really good performance.
What surprised me is that Xu Xin could not adjust to that strategy for 3 games.
Usually Xu Xin would come up with a solution. But not this time.

Liam messed XX up with lots of variety and touch and then stepped in and played with high risk and aggression. He took his opportunity and played with courage and conviction.
