I think that's what people are calling out. It's very clear that it's "super important" to make CERTAIN characters actually look like themselves (never mind the personalities and such, which a lot of times they ruin to insert their woke propaganda in place of the original characters), whereas they treat other characters like "blank slates who can be replaced by ANYONE", while constantly saying things like, "white people have no culture".
It's pretty hard not to see a pattern. They've even recast REAL PEOPLE who were white as black, and fantasy Hitler youth type characters as black, where it clearly makes NO sense.
People aren't racist for calling out blatant racism when they treat people of one skin color constantly completely and utterly different than every other skin color.
When I play FFVII, I expect Cloud to look like fucking Cloud. If I turn on FFVII, and he's suddenly a Lithuanian woman, I'm not playing that game - and it's not because I hate Lithuanian women, it's because that's not Cloud.

Mermaids would probably be countershaded like Sharks, whales, and dolphins imo. Countershading allows marine predators to control the water surface with bidirectional camouflage. For any prey below, the white underbelly blends in with the sunlight from above, while for anything above the dark back allows them to blend in with the darkness of the depths below. So if anything, the little mermaid should have some kind of severe vitiligo.

There's a reason why a lot of fish adapt similar shapes, it's because being human-shaped with hair just creates unnecessary drag. Every mermaid should look like a weird seel-like creature with human body fat for buoyancy or it's scientifically inaccurate.
No singing, either. Human speech wouldn't carry like that, only squeals and clicks outside of the human range of hearing. Imagine it:
A large seel-like creature floats into frame. The music starts up. It's making a sad face...

If I remember correctly, the Ghost in the Shell live action movie raised eyebrows because the production company kept releasing promotional material explaining that the characters weren't actually Japanese in the original material (even so far as getting the creator to go "Well she's an android so I guess it's okay"). And then there was the CGI tests to give Scarlett Johansen "Asian eyes". I didn't care at the time cause it seemed like a disastrous cash grab, but it made me wonder why they were going to such lengths to justify their casting decision.
On a related note though, when I was younger I tried auditioning for roles that specifically called for Japanese actors. And I'd find out later the positions went to white actors on the grounds of "we went with the most authentic talent" or to a different Asian nationality because "audiences can't tell the difference." So realistically, the lesson here is just that productions will do whatever they think will get them the most profits and then find a way to justify it later if it raises any controversy.

Character is a Scarlett Johansson looking robot, but in Flashback at the end of the film we learn it has actually a brain of middle age japanese woman. Also if I remember corectly Scarrlet actually plays different character then in anime, she has different name I think. Didn't knew about CGI eyes controversy, that sounds cringe. But it's clear Scarrlet got that role only cause shes a famous name and not many asian actors are.

Since Melissa McCarthy is Ursula, I wonder how they're going to handle Vanessa? Since Vanessa is supposed to closely resemble Ariel (enough so that Prince Eric believes she was the girl he saw when he woke up), but since Ariel is Black, and Melissa McCarthy is both white and fat, what will they do? Will they still have Vanessa be white and have it just not make much sense? Will they have Vanessa be black, and if so, would that be considered some kind of pseudo-blackface since it's really just Ursula in a disguise? I honestly thought they'd hire a black actor to play Ursula so this wouldn't be an issue.
I feel like the fat activist community will also have a huge problem if Vanessa is thin like Ariel, even tho that's how it is in the movie. I wonder if they'd go so far as to make Vanessa fat just to avoid the possible backlash? Or remove the Vanessa storyline altogether (the worst possible timeline).

Walsh's take of "OH BUT IF WE MADE PRINCESS AND THE FROG A WYPIPO YOU WOULD BE MAAAAAAAAAD" is a false equivalence. In the Princess and the Frog, Tiana being black was integral to the story. She experienced discrimination that was strongly implied to be born out of racial prejudice. She also grew up in New Orleans' black culture.
In The Little Mermaid, it literally makes no fucking difference if Ariel is any other race than white. She's a fictional creature in a fairytale setting. You could argue that maybe it's weird a very small population of non-human creatures is racially diverse, but it doesn't matter. The movie tells the story of Ariel being thirsty for humans, it doesn't delve into mermaid immigration and ethnic census. She could straight up be a vaguely anthropomorphic fish like Flounder and it wouldn't matter.

I personally don't care if a fictional character a lá Ariel, James Bond, Batman, etc. is played by an actor with a different race compared to the original, as long as their good in the role then I don't care. If we're talking about fictional or historical characters where their racial/ethnic background is a part of the story, then the proper representation is important. Having a white guy play Malcolm X or a black guy play Bruce Lee, it would obviously not work from both a historical and story perspective. It's a tough conversation to have, mostly because the emotions surrounding it are so heightened that you can't really participate without it being civil or respectful.

As far as the controversy goes, I can see why some people would criticize Disney for making Ariel black. Having black protagonists is great and all that, but it seems like a very cynical way to be representative and get support for being politically correct when we all know the trope about gay characters in Disney that can be easily edited out for Chinese audiences. It's all superficial and cynical, so it just feels disingenuous, and then "Everyone who criticizes this movie for looking bad is racist" becomes the defense to gather support.
So again, not criticizing the fact that they made Ariel black, I don't really care, but it seems like the whole controversy was cynically predicted and probably intentional, just to drum up some PR around this movie that just looks wholly uninteresting.

The only problem is that they're doing this stuff in remakes all the time because instead of making new and good likable character, they change races of others and they count it as representation. Why can't you just have a brand new movie that has both a black lead and all black cast and make it entertaining with a good story and good characters instead of making terrible remakes with race-swapped main characters. Again this doesn't mean it's wrong to have someone who's black be a main character in a movie, but why, why does Disney do this though? Plus tbh we already know that even if they kept her white it would've been bad either way, just as a reminder that a majority of Disney remakes have been pretty awful.

Race swapping is only ok if the character's race isn't integral to the character's story.
Is being black integral to the character's story? Don't change their race.
Is being white integral to the character's story? Don't change their race.
Ariel's story is about being a mermaid that falls in love with a human. Her race isn't a part of her story, therefore it's alright to change her race if people really want to. I, personally, think we should just make more original stories about people of color rather than do race swap remakes, however, Ariel being black isn't the big atrocity or scientific inaccuracy that Matt Walsh makes it out to be. If they had changed her from a mermaid into another fictional creature, then that would be different, because her being a mermaid is actually integral to her story.
Also, let's be real, this movie is gonna suck because it's a live action Disney remake, not because any of the characters have been race swapped.

To be realistic, not all riffs and runs are "showy bullshit." Talented performers understand that strategically placed riffs are a form of emotional/dramatic emphasis. When an actor has to speak the same line more than once, the appropriate choice is to provide different emphasis on the repeated phrases to convey importance and emotion. Since Ariel sings that exact line ("wish I could be part of your world") multiple times in that song, the riff is strategically placed on the final iteration of the line to both differentiate it from previous iterations AND to provide emotional emphasis so that her desire to "be part of that world" is highlighted.

    • @zs4580

I love how these live action remakes will be looked back upon as the biggest stain on Disney's reputation. Like, the direct to video sequels were cheap trash, but they knew what they were, they were products made to cash in on the direct to video market at the time and nothing more. These live action remakes I would argue are worse because they take up SO much time and money and whatnot at Disney and they absolutely blow. I'm sure they'll have a cult following of kids growing up now who'll have a soft spot for them and, honestly, I can't blame them for that; I have the same affinity for some of the direct to video sequels or the Star Wars Prequels. That doesn't make these good. What I am taken aback by is just HOW ugly these movies are. They're either super dark with harsh shadows and muddy colors that make it look like an early 2000s horror movie, or they're so washed out and overexposed they look like District 9. The sheer incompetence of this studio to butcher their catalog like this over and over is baffling. The ones coming out now don't even have an heir of grandeur to them anymore. Mulan and Pinocchio in particular were unbridled disasters. I hope that once Disney gets all of these remakes already in production out of the way, they'll just stop and pit their focus back into their animated stuff which has always blown the remakes out of the water. Ralph Breaks the Internet may be an equally awful cash grab as the remakes, but at least it doesn't make me want to remove my eyes with a spoon.

I can explain the “wahrld” pronunciation. Usually singers do that to open up their throat. It makes singing higher notes easier, and is usually unnoticeable when you aren’t watching them sing.
This means she probably couldn’t hit the note while singing the “O” in “world”, and instead was told to sing it as “wahrld”.
At least, that’s what I assume as a person who has had voice coaching before. My father actually gave me that advice once for a different song. He was coached by the same licensed opera coach as i was when he was a kid, and got the lead roles in almost every play he’s auditioned for, so he knows how to sing.

    • @hentaayy3980
      @hentaayy3980 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I don’t think it’s that she couldn’t hit the note, seeing that she is very vocally capable. It’s just modern vowel placement. Even in the original, the singer doesn’t use a string o for world because it would make the line harsh:)
