    I feel like there was a good reason why Disney chose to make The Little Mermaid using stylised, cartoony line-drawn animation and not horrifying, uncanny hyperrealism. But no, it was probably just because of technological limitations.

      Hand drawn 2d has more soul by default. It can be done in 3d, but the tendency too often is how realistic can I make this 3d model.

      It takes obsessive, passionate people to make a hand drawn animated movie. CG movie making has gotten so accessible that any pack of rascals can slap one together.
      Of course once in awhile you get obsessive, passionate people with computers, and we wind up with absolute treasure like Arcane and Spiderverse and Puss in Boots

    I hate that they call it live action. This remake went through more computer work than the animated film did lol.
    How the animals look is enough proof that this movie is going to suck. Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle have no emotions. They're so overly realistic that when a sad scene does happen, you won't be able to tell. Good job Disney. Really bringing in the magic here.

      Sebastian really sticks out because he does the duty of being both the comic relief and one of the original movie’s main emotional hearts. So you want to make sure that he can express every emotion.
      I loved Sebastian in the original movie, you can tell he wants the best for Ariel and can understand his want to be respected by both Ariel and the king, but it’s more centred on him than what Ariel wants.

    I'm now scared to see what Stitch, Jumba, and Pleakley are going to look like in the upcoming Lilo and Stitch remake. Chris Sanders has a unique art style that only animation can translate so perfectly. This photorealistic CGI trend is going to make them look hideous.

      I don't think we'll be getting ugly redesigns. I'm pretty sure for that one they'll just make 3D models of the classics and texture them realistically. Like with Pinnochio but more like Detective Pikachu this time. It'll be the wholly different issue of the characters looking uncanny because they weren't designed to look appealing that way.

      The fish he is portrayed as is called a "Sargent Major" a very common reef fish in Florida, and Caribbean. They are a type of Damselfish and not at all related to flounders

    Realism was never going to work with Sebastian and Flounder. Expressiveness aside, they removed those two SO far from the actual animals to make them look appealing in the first place. No crab has a head like Sebastian, they just gave him it 'cause crab faces are horrifying.

    about the weird griany filter on mccarthy, it looks like it's a photo retouching trick, basically when the photoshop guy (lol) is taking off the blemishes and imperfections in the face it ends up looking weird and too smooth, bc as they remove blemishes pores and other natural details also disappear, so the finishing touch is to add a filter/texture thingy on the skin so at quick glance the skin has pores again. of course, when you zoom in looks VERY strange

    The fact the Mario movie put more effort into the Cheep Cheeps by making them actually faithful to the games (as well as the Maw Ray eel from Mario 64) really says a lot about what those horrendous and hideous realistic designs Disney is doing for Flounder, Scuttle, and especially Sebastian.

    I love that Disney still pushes advertisements for this, telling people to buy tickets as if this wasn't rightfully crapped on as soon as it was announced. I wish I had the confidence that companies nowadays have because I'd be ashamed to go anywhere near other people if they knew I had a hand in creating this. It doesn't matter how good I got paid, no amount of money is worth sacrificing my dignity.

      I feel like one of the reasons ugly Sonic got the complete design overhaul was because Sonic has been the meme 'bad' thing for a long time now and I suspect Sega wouldn't want a movie released remembered as the thing to dunk on for the next 30 years. Disney execs know people hate these designs, probably including the animators fighting for their lives to make them work alright, but it will make 1 billion dollar thanks to normies so they don't have to do anything.     Not that this would have saved the movie or anything, but if they were gonna choose a real fish to base his design on, why didn't they choose a pufferfish or porcuinefish for Flounder? They look pretty goofy in real life and I think you could get away with being somewhat expressive with that kind of design.
