    Hey Jay, I have to say that I have almost zero aggression issues with my big haps. They have all got their little spots and ranking, as well as they have all been one unit for a very long time. You gave some real good key points, but in my experience, they don’t come anywhere near the aggression level of some Central and South American Cichlids in regards to aggression. Anyways thanks for sharing

    HELP! Jay, I have a 75 gallon tank with 22, 2-3 inch mbuna in it and I havr three dominant males in my tank and they kept all thr rest of the fish pinned to the top right side of tank. One controlled left side of rockwork, one controlled middle and one controlled right side. Also they were beating up one smaller one. I just, moments ago, removed all the rockwork and now there's only sand in the tank, no rockwork and nothing for the fish to hide behind. Was this too much of a radical change in their environment to the point where they might die considering their was so much rockwork prior to this change and also will this work to reduce and even stop the aggression. My temperature is 76 degrees Fahrenheit and that hasnt seemed to work to slow these 3 fish down in the slightest. I know that time will tell the story in this situation but if you could give me your input and advice from your experiences and knowledge it would be much appreciated. Thank you, all the best... Brandon

  • @fishrrelaxing9361
    @fishrrelaxing9361 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I’ve never really had an issue with over aggression in my tanks and I keep males and females together heavily stocked. The only issue is having to remove the female once she’s holding cause if you don’t break the pairing they will become supper aggressive and super defensive and any two working together is enough to fight and kill any fish of any size..
    I do think the scheduled feedings are super important to keep aggression down. As is filter cleaning and water changes.. I can always tell when my nitrates are getting high cause my fish get a little more aggressive then normal. Once my nitrates hit 40-60ppm
    Range the fish’s attitude changes.
    Even with spawning pairs I’ve been successful in dropping paired aggression by simply moving decorations once a week to make them reestablish new territory. This only works while holding though.. once the female drops they will have now mercy for anything else in that tank less then 4’ away from where they drop the fry.
    I’ve only ever had one death and I wasn’t home so maybe the fish died on its own idk.. but it was a Texas cichlid in my mixed mbuna hap and South American tank. It’s setup all wrong by normal standards lol. It’s about half mbuna but have lingstoni venustus in there as well with the South Americans. Likely to change soon though cause my green terror and one of my jacks is finally getting to a decent size however one of the venustus is already 7” plus and isn’t even concerned with being tank boss and is easily the largest fish in there. None of the others mess with him yet but the tank boss is actually a 4” johani lol.. they are nasty little fish. Green terror has been #2 since the day he went in the tank and was only 2”then. Odd thing is I don’t ever separate females and males in any tank no matter the species. I run about a 2 male to 1 female ratio except in my community tanks where I run the proper 5-1 female/male ratios for breeding and don’t have issues other then I can’t give fry away fast enough. Just now getting to the point I have enough extra tanks sitting around to setup some fry tanks though. However I’ve been very successful in both breeding and keeping aggression in check even with spawning in a 60g tank with 40 or so mixed cichlids in it. (Finally got them moved to a 125 last weekend bu they spent the better part of a 6 months in a tank way too small and way too stocked to the point I was having to do daily 80%+ water changes to keep nitrates under 30ppm. I was running 17x filtered turnover on that tank though with 2 wave makers and cleaning filters regular though.
    So what I come to is... I think it is a lot more about husbandtry, and actually paying attention to what’s going on then anything else. I don’t watch tv much in the evenings after work. I spend most of my free time sitting in front of various tanks for various amounts of time and enjoying them. (At least when I’m not having to do maintenance on them lol).. I currently have 7 tanks (another 4 in the garage im working on) and stagger my schedules so I work on one everyday soon as I walk in the door. I think this gives me a little more hands on time with each one then most likely have and it’s more a routine then anything so no longer even a hassle. Routine is key.. just like planted tanks like lights on timers fish like themselves like a routine as well. I may miss a feeding by 30min day to day or a water change by an hour or so but it always happens at the same time on the same day every week. I think this is one of the most overlooked and best things any keeper can do is keep to a scheduled routine if it’s 1tank or 100. No different then feeding your dog or cat at the s,e time every night and walking then one last time before bed at the same time every night.. fish are no different then any other pet. They just get stuck living in a glass box.
    Want to add after watching a second time.. I keep all my tanks at 80-81* for simplicity. I could alter each specifically for the perfect range like my planted tanks would be way better at 76* but I like to keep everything as consistent between each tank as possible. Same filters, same heaters, same temps, same water chemistry etc.. the simpler it is the simpler it is to maintain several tanks at once. As for territory aggression linke my mbuna tanks.. I buy the fake rocks from petsmart that look like fake holy rock with 10+ holes each and leave most the rest of the tank wide open.. since they are all forced to find territory in the same spot (one hole on top of another) they seem to take much less space as territory. They will dig the hell out of my sand bottom making pits in open spaces but I just rake them over daily when I feed. Only time I don’t rake them is when I can see breeding activity..

    I have two OBs in my 125. One is always chasing the other until it hides up in the corner of the tank. Neither one has fin nippage or damage, just the one almost always hiding. The aggressor only chases that other OB. So my question is, do you think that adding maybe two more OBs it would spread the con specific aggression out?

    • @Jaywil07
      @Jaywil07  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t know. Could make it worse for the rest.

    • @chrispalmer9802
      @chrispalmer9802 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jaywil07 Hadn't thought of that. Just weird that the other OB is the only one he chases. The one getting chased has alot more color than the aggressor if that could have anything to do with it.

    You can buy all the cool fish, you can be the world's best decorator and most knowledgeable person, but it means nothing to me as a Subscriber when there are children involved.
    You handled your Son with ease, he is intelligent and responsive and interactive. To me that means you spend time with him, quality time and that gets you a subscribe from me. Obviously you are a good Dad and I can't give you a better higher compliment. I can't wait to catch up on your videos, you ever come to Canada you have a friend and a place. is a 20 gallon too small for these 4 fish? i noticed that its kind of hard for them to get away from each other if one is bullying the other. i've been saving up for a 60 gallon and was thinking of waiting another month before i buy it , but I am starting to reconsider buying it now . they don't usually fight like this and they are ExTREMELY calm now that the light is off , so that is helping!
