    This happened to me before. Being that my tank had been establish for over a year and no new added fish i decided to do a water change. 2 to 3 days later tank was still cloudy. So decided to take out all my rock work out of my 125 gallon tank thinking there must be lots of poop under rocks. And that's when I found the dead fish. But you know that's one of the great things about this hobby, We are always learning.

    My understanding about Methylene Blue is that you use it not in the actual aquarium, but in a separate container doing a fish bath. I was told that Methylene Blue is a good product, but should not be used in the actual aquarium because it can destroy beneficial bacteria.

    • @Jaywil07

      Meth blue promotes oxygen not destruction of bacteria but many meds do effect bacteria

    My tank has been set up about 3 months everything been good. I got new fish and add them. But one my original fish. Started acting skittish. Stayed at the bottom when I would be able to stay under the other fish 2 weeks later it died after a water change. Well I got another fish doing the same thing there mbuna do you think it’s stress. There about 2 inches big

    I’ve learned after so many years to not panic with ich! I raise the temp to about 82-85 degrees F and add a tablespoon of kosher salt (Morton is great - not necessary to purchase “aquarium salt”) per 5 gallons and do 20 percent water changes every 2 days. Replace the salt per the amount you’ve taken out until you see the ich start to diminish. Continue regular tank maintenance as normal after to gradually remove the salt. The key is, do not panic and add a bunch of chemicals to your tank. This is not necessary and in my opinion, they do more harm with stress/dying everything blue than good.

    • @andre2679
      @andre2679 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In closing, I’ve learned that the more I did with chemical products in panic, the worst things got. Calm down and keep it simple.

    so i have a 1000 gallon heated pond that i keep mainly south american cichlids. i’ve had it for years and have had no issues at all. I add new fish from time to time but never any problems. i am outside all the time with those fish and i pay close attention to what goes on. well strangely enough, last week i noticed a few dead firemouths.. at first i thought it was maybe a fight but by the end of the day i had lost easily 20 firemouths of all different sizes. i was devastated! the weird part is that no other species died, just the FM. i still have a few big adults left thankfully. i tested the water and the nitrates with pretty high, so i dosed the water with good bacteria and was able to get the nitrates lower.. no water changes though bc everything i’ve read says that can be harmful to well established ponds.. and it’s huge. i’ve never changed the water and the water parameters are always better than my inside tanks. but the whole scenario confuses me because every time I have ever tested the water the nitrates and nitrites were always at 0. i don’t understand why one would randomly get so high in a very old and stable eco system. and I also don’t understand why it didn’t affect any of the other fish. Like the electric blue jack Dempsey‘s. Or the angel fish. in my experience they are incredibly sensitive to nitrates and nitrites. why would ONLY the FMs die? i easily lost 20 that night and since then i’ve been adding chemicals the nitrates have slowly been reducing. this is the first time I’ve had to add any chemicals other than prime when I add water due to evaporation. everyone else seems fine. what happened?

    • @Shashankmk
      @Shashankmk 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      South and central american cichlids are very hardy unlike african cichlids. Africans are more sensitive.

    Great information Jay. We all get the over excited feeling when we get new fish and the reaction is to put them in our display tanks as soon as we get them. But you are 100% correct, trust the process. These fish are prone to disease and precautions need to be taken to protect your investment. Yes these fish are a huge investment especially in big tanks. It’s easy to compile a few thousand dollars in fish in big tanks and one moment of impatience can kill everything you have worked so hard to achieve. Keep the videos coming buddy.

    I have 6 tanks no fish loss from time I started doing water transplants. My main tank is 1yr and I have taken gravel and water from this tank everytime to start and cycle my other tanks. This has eradicated need for almost all products except slime coat. Fx 4 on big tanks. Also 55gal tank has about 9 females produced roughly 40 fry. Only deaths thru fights but no ich and no disease for months. Water changes 2x weekly feedings every other day because im grossly overstocked with about 22 adults 5 to 6 inches 17 teens 3 ins and all those fry. But the tall trees break the fights most of times. I had 1 electric blue fish die of an eye tumor though. I do medicate with general cure and fungus cure on occasion just for maintenance and I fill tanks with purified alkaline water from my kitchen. My husband says that its the water quality because the fish are very healthy for being so overstocked coats bright and clean and Ive used no added water conditioners for the whole time

    You need a TON of bacteria in your filter to handle the cloudiness in Cichlid tanks. You don’t need anything else just a proper 2-3 months cycled filter. Best to have two so that when you clean one the other is still running for at least 2 months to properly filtrate the water. I also had a lot of cloudiness but after two months the water was crystal clear. Even if the feeding session left the water very cloudy. Next morning it would be crystal clear. No additives. Just a very well cycled filter

  • @sharkbit61
    @sharkbit61 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Jay, nature knows best! I use only limestone rocks and aragonite substrate for my Africans to create a basis for a very stable environment. I get the careful treatment after much research/diagnosis but slow down and stop dumping stuff in your tank. It will clear. As they say in the hobby, only bad things happen quickly.

    • @Jaywil07
      @Jaywil07  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The substrate has nothing to do with the cycle. It was the phosphates. As far as the main issue it was not getting the fish to Qt and rushing them to the tank in excitement.

  • @majorbruster5916
    @majorbruster5916 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I am sorry for your loss. Quarantine is the key; if you are going to stock a very large tank where the fishes will be difficult to catch post-introduction, then isolating them in a smaller tank for 14 days minimum is important. Prophylactic treatment can be easily carried out. Some observations: Salt will not cure white spot. Methylene blue will treat ws but being a bactericide will also knock out your filter bacteria and kill your plants. Malachite green is better and so is acriflavine but the latter will also affect nitrifying bacteria and plants. All the more reason to carry out these treatments in a bare Q-tank. Activated charcoal does not remove INorganic salts, it has a great affinity for low molecular weight organics. Inorganic salts are best removed by water changes or, if you prefer to throw money at a problem, pass the water through a de-ionising resin. The cloudiness was caused by bacteria which are not removed by ordinary filtration. Putting in Chemi-pure blue would also have no effect on cloudiness caused by bacterial decomposition, and it has a similar effect to activated charcoal but via a different means. I fail to understand your confusion of columnaris disease with WS; the signs of each are quite different, however, treating with M2 was the right thing to do for Flexibacter. I feel you let your impatience get the better of you over some common sense, and that things would have worked out OK if you had followed 'the procedure'. All good things come to those who wait.
