  • Major depression has afflicted humankind since time immemorial and has caused, and continues to cause, immense morbidity and lost hours of work worldwide. Depression is a common condition and can have more serious consequences, leading to other mental conditions that can have fatal outcomes. Studies have shown that depression affects the likelihood of survival after heart attacks and strokes, as well as the degree of control of diseases such as diabetes and HTN. Fortunately, we have an extensive selection of medications to manage depression, but many of these cause side effects that are intolerable to patients or fail to relieve symptoms completely. Wellbutrin (bupropion) is one of the medications used as an alternative or adjunct to failed treatment trials, and many patients have derived relief from Wellbutrin (bupropion). However, there exists a dark side to Wellbutrin (Bupropion) that many people are unaware of: the potential for abuse. In this video, we examine this lesser-known feature of Wellbutrin (bupropion).

I have history of stimulants and other drugs abuse, MDD, anhedonia, no motivation to get out of my bed. I tried snorting bupropion once (150mg tablet) and its nothing to compare with amphetamines or cocaine. High is unplesant and short acting, instead I just started to take bupropion as prescribed and this med changed my life in every aspect. No more depression, no more lack of energy and no more drugs craving. I'm on theraphy now, changed my bad habits and i feel optimistic first time from very long time.

@@GodfearingGuy101 I've waited 6 weeks for full effect. It's normal to feel ups and downs at the beggining, but it should stabilize soon. If not you can bump your dose up or ask your doctor to add another med for better response. I'm also on low dose of mirtazapine (15mg) and it seems to work synergistically. Good luck!

Same. I also had a pretty bad case of OCD while on it. I stopped taking it last week after 6 months with the goal of managing ADHD. Clearly it didn't help. Too much norepinephrine in my brain resulted in me reacting to the most mild critiques and disagreements as if I were being attacked by a bear. Took a few days to completely leave my system, but once it did I felt so much better. I'm disappointed in my doctor for downplaying the anxiety risk. If you already struggle with anxiety, I would say Wellbutrin is not for you.

Took Wellbutrin around the start of this year and almost immediately developed severe tinnitus. I quit cold turkey after a couple of weeks but the ringing persisted. It's been steadily improving since, but if I knew my life could be so negatively impacted by this drug I would've stayed far away from it. The only side effects of Wellbutrin I've observed are that my skin got slightly more oily and hair gets greasy faster.
Also, SSRI drugs just made me really numb, helped with depression but I couldn't function normally, so I was just my depressed self unable to complete daily tasks, but didn't feel so bad about it

i personally have been suffering from post ssri sexual dysfunction (pssd) for almost a decade after a 10 month treatment with citalopram. i know many people who suffer from post ssri syndrome in a more severe form than i do, i.e. with symptoms of emotional dulling and anhedonia and cognitive dysfunction. there are young people among them who have taken a drug for all in all mild problems, and not severe depression or mental disorders. I wonder how a doctor can be honest about this and continue to prescribe these serotoninergic drugs in abundance, which are also becoming more and more widespread off-label. and how can a patient really assess the risk-benefit ratio before prescribing, as long as there is no epidemiological data to tell how widespread the risk of PSSD is and doctors continue to fail to inform before prescribing, and even to deny the harm done.

I snap at my family; it’s like I have a shorter fuse. Also I “zone out” just stare off into space while someone’s talking to me and I’ll even say “uh huh”, “oh really?”, “Yeah”, etc.. then I snap out of it and say “sorry I zoned out, will you repeat what you were saying?” 🤦‍♀️

I relate to zoning out but tbh I’m not sure if it’s the drug that causes it. I feel like it could be the case that wellbutrin made me notice it more when it happens instead of it making it happen more. I think it might even be thinkable that I was constantly zoning out before but because it starts to subside now I notice it because my focus shifts. I’m at my second/ third week 150mg per day. So far I noticed that everything feels a bit off. Also I have some weird feeling of nervousness without being nervous (I know that sounds stupid but I cant describe in any other way, it’s kinda physical but there’s this weird sensation of pressure in my abdomen too) All in all it’s awkward but my head seems somewhat clearer, I am less emotional in situations that I would normally be inappropriately emotional in. My doctor thinks this might be due to anxiety and depression (I don’t think I’m depressed) so I just got prescribed Wellbutrin and this comment section is making me nervous.

Unfortunately my experience wasn't good. I used bupropion and noticed an initial increase in motivation, but over time It completely altered my ability to express empathy. I also became extremely combative. I could see a shift in my personality but I thought this side effect would diminish over time so I continued while it only got worse. I stopped before I lost the ability to rationally acknowledge this wasn't my normal behavior. I've experienced everything from opiates to stimulant medication like phentermine that acts on the same neurotransmitters and nothing ever caused such an extreme out of control reaction like bupropion did for me. *Not to say it won't work for others, this is just a cautionary tale of my experience, since it's supposed to be a mild antidepressant*

@IssBugs-qt8ed That's interesting. I sought treatment to help navigate down regulated dopamine receptors that resulted from the discontinuation of long-term opiate medication treatment. After the two year withdrawal period, I never returned to what my normal baseline was prior (If that makes sense), but I would not call it depression in my case because I knew what was happening and why. The theory was bupropion could help, but overtime it just felt more like navigating your reality under a constant excess of norepinephrine, That was useful in some regard for physical motivation initially but trying to navigate your daily interactions feeling like your in constant fight or flight mode was not helpful and most likely a precursor to a manic episode according to the doctor, but who knows. Some people believe that it's a sign that the medication is working and that you're actually developing the ability to be assertive instead of passive, but I don't know that I agree I just know it is somthing to be aware of if people decide to try this, the new found irritability/aggression isn't always just a side effect that will go away if you stick with it and could impact your relationships & life in a negative way if your not paying attention. I don't have a strong opinion either way and I'm definitely not a doctor or someone qualified to really understand the intricacies of what's happening in the brain though so idk lol

Huh. I did notice that I'm slightly less empathetic on the medication. But for me, it just means I'm less sensitive I think. And stuff doesn't bother me as bad. I don't ruminate on my own mistakes as hard or as long. And it is harder for other people to manipulate me.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience though. I've been on meds that didn't agree with me before. And that's no fun. And I feel like this is another reason that more medications need to be researched. And we need to check for genetic factors that could help figure out what meds work best for which people. The whole trial and error thing is no fun.

Hello sheilabrennan4481, when it comes to medication, anything above the recommended dose is considered a high dose. If you’re taking a dosage at the upper limits of normal, that too can be referred to as a high dose as opposed to a lower dose. Like all medications, Wellbutrin could be and has been a miracle drug for some, whereas, for others, it could be the source of severe side effects. Of course, if the medication is abused, the likelihood of side effects increases significantly. Thank you for watching.

From what I understand sexual pleasure and energy fall under the dopamine umbrella. So do these medications indirectly help with dopamine? Now this is probably a few years down the road but it sure will be nice when we can take a blood test for dopamine and the rest of our crucial chemicals that keep us happy and everything else they do. • @DrKevinLowe

Hello joshgeyer7941, one of the dangers of any addiction is the effects it has on your ability to function in your relationships, both at work and at home. These obviously can affect your productivity. There is also the risk of adverse effects on your general health, which is extremely important. One of the most important steps towards recovery is recognizing that the problem exists, and you have already declared that fact. You are therefore well on your way to recovery and I hope you are able to maintain that momentum moving forward. Have you sought professional help? I wish you continued success and hope to hear full recovery from you in the near future. Thank you for watching.
