Are you still studying and can you help me understand why my Tourette's has come back (after 40 years of not having any tics.)
They're calling it rare TD now, after I received a Maxolon for a migraine. I've looked up tardive dyskinesia. And it seems like that could be the case, however, it also feels like Tourette's because I have exactly the same motor tics I had when I was 13 and younger.
Toes, shoulder, eyebrows, bubble feeling under my top lip. Also my back and legs Twitch all night..
Ok so the biggest reason that I would like to speak with somebody who might understand this whole serotonin and dopamine thing, is because this is the medication that they give to pregnant women for nausea. It's not recommended in some countries for children under 10 due to the nerve damage side effects. Yet recommended for the foetus.. I'm not sure if you've heard of this medication or can help me understand what it might do to unborn child if, it has done this to me and others. They say things like these disorders can be genetic. I think by genetic makeup not really like metoclopramide ingredients.
The doctor has told me p.s., this is irreversible

I've been on SSRIs for almost 15 years. I wouldn't even recommend these medications to my worst enemy. Very little is known of the extent of the long term effects on the brain. Over the years my symptoms has just gotten worse and it's extremely hard to quit because of the severe side-effects it causes. Dizziness, electric shock sensations in the brain, anxiety, depersonalisation, sweating, balance problems, trouble walking, nightmares etc. The list goes on and on and on. This is a 40 year old medication and now just serves as a massive cash grab for the pharmaceutical companies. Recent studies show that serotonin might not even be linked to depression after all and that SSRIs are pretty much as effective as a placebo for treating mental illness. There will come a time when we look back on SSRIs the same way we look back on the medical use of heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine today.

Well Holly, maybe the doctor thought it would be obvious. Or maybe they just don't have time. It is annoying I know. But every medication has a side effect. Antibiotics really mess up and destroy healthy gut flora, which can lead to a whole host of other health issues. People should be taking B vitamins regardless of whether they had a course of antidepressants. If not done so already, I suggest you get a full blood test check what other deficiencies you may now have.

@Touko Fukawa Talk to your prescriber about it! There's lot of medications out there, it could be you just need to be on a different one, or perhaps on a different dosage.
But it IS a common issue with anti-depressants where it sort of... sucks things out of you? I guess? I'm not an emotionless robot, but it's harder for me to want to do something creative since I've been on sertraline. I mean I love not feeling like I want to kill myself constantly anymore, but I miss the days when I felt like drawing as well.

@@1978UA I have heard about similar studies and I appreciate that you're spreading the word about psilocybin therapy, but it is still a very relatively new science and I don't think science has had a chance to legally make these experiments accessible to alot of people that may/might not find alot of either pros or cons to that level of therapy yet. I like the prospects of the studies becoming more widely spread out, but there is still so much negative stigma surrounding the treatment because of the culture it represents. And as somebody that took mushrooms recreationally over the years, I'll admit that it's the culture that is often romanticized by the rec users that has made our science teams/government legislation boards full of doubt about the positive medical aspects and perhaps not taken these studies seriously yet. Idk, but I support the progression of that treatment the more we find out about it as limited as the clinical trials seem to have been in recent years.

John, have you ever heard of 'poop out' i.e. the idea that for some people it suddenly stops working (Paxil/Paroxetine) after many years, I suppose this can happen with other SSRI's, I sometimes worry about that and so tapered to a low dose of only 5mg but life is tough on 5mg, I tried 2,5mg and all manner of demons raise their ugly heads, depression, anger, sadness, worry, stress etc etc, this is my sticking point he 2.5mg stage.
Im 55yrs so started taking it around 28yrs of age and was on 20mg as well initially, the last 7yrs tapered down to 5mg from 15mg (at some point I dropped 5mg)
Ive read that the amount of serotonin circulating around in the brain lessens over the yrs of taking SSRI's, so Im not sure what this means the lessening of this pool of serotonin, does it then dry up eventually?
The reason poop out is frightening is that 1. Depression will return with a vengeance and 2. Withdrawal or discontinuation syndrome sets in, wow - those 2 would knock anybody out. So I keep my drop to a minimum, but at times do wonder and think Id be happier on 10mg or even 7.5mg.

I also had horrible migraines for the first couple of weeks, but on sertraline, and that seems to be quite common, especially if you’re already prone to headaches and migraines. But I’ve had that with every single SSRI that I’ve tried, and the side effect does go away for me after the third week. I really hope you can find something that works for you 💕

Fluoxetine takes longer than other SSRIs to start working - 6wks as opposed to 3-4. Feeling worse for 1-2 weeks (not 6-8!) is to be expected and they should inform ppl of that, but you shouldn't 'tough it out' if it's making you massively depressed or suicidal, and worsening migraines is probably a deal breaker for many :/ But it's quite possible a different SSRI would affect you differently, it's weird how different each can be for different people. (e.g. for me personally, fluoxetine is the only one that doesn't make me sleepy, oddly since that not very common for SSRIs, and lexapro/escitalopram was the only one I couldn't drink on.)
Wishing you lots of luck, it's great that you're gonna see a psychiatrist!

I was prescribed Mirtazapine for insomnia about 2 1/2 weeks ago. One of the big side effects for me was the elevated edginess and anxiety it created. It's done a great job at fixing my sleep nonetheless. But as soon as my doctor heard me mention the side effects she quickly prescribed Fluoxetine. Never ever been on it. And after watching this and all the things to avoid I think I further want to stay away from it and just wait for these side effects to wear off. Personally I think sometimes these doctor rush to fix every little problem with a pill and expensive follow up calls and visits. We forget there in a business to push things that may not always be the right thing for us at that time.

@Drew Jackson Before that, a year or two prior I tried venlafaxine. I absolutely hated it: nasty bouts of insomnia, hallucinations, mouth so dry I could choke! Horrid brain zaps too. The comparison to my experience with Zoloft is like night and day, with the Zoloft I experienced some bad nausea and felt a bit uppity, but the change occurred within a week and the biggest thing is my mood has entirely stabilised. I initially went on it for anxiety reasons, so I'm not sure if that's why one didn't work, but my doctor did mention I had depressive issues as well. I don't want to off myself every day at least now, lol. I'm a far more pleasant person to be around: I'm not angry all the time, I don't snap at people, I'm way more inclined to show concern at friends being rude or off to me rather than lashing out and becoming vindictive. I feel like I have the potential to become a good person now. Nothing like that happened with the venlafaxine, I just became ten times more anxious and felt absolutely dreadful.

I want to share my story so that others do not make mistakes. I suffered from serotonin syndrome after two weeks of taking Prozac, and then the doctor added another medication for me, which I took, and I had a panic attack, severe fear, and confusion, and I felt like I was going to die. I went to the emergency room in the hospital and met with another psychiatrist who had no experience. I told him, unfortunately, he said: I have anxiety that is not from the medicine. He gave me another medicine, so I believed what he said and I went into a coma due to serotonin poisoning. The medicine was withdrawn from my body, but I suffered from severe depression and anxiety after that because of this incident. I continued to suffer for years, and I am now fine, much better than before, and I am still recovering without any medications. An antidepressant. I love that you mentioned grapefruit. It actually slows down CYP450 too, which, from what I'm understanding, is a family (I think the cytochrome you mentioned may be in that family) of enzymes that metabolizes most antidepressants, anxiety medicine, and painkillers. None of those things will work on me unless I eat grapefruit, I had to figure that out on my own too after essentially experimenting on myself. 🙄 I ate half a grapefruit every other day and after 2 weeks I only needed a fourth of what I was originally taking. I went from still having panic attacks while on 2mg of Xanax (plus several other sedatives and medications) to only needing .5mg and I am now able to just use Kratom powder to prevent most panic attacks from happening. Grapefruit isn't super reliable though so I have a lot of trouble any time I'm needing painkillers. It's the worst at the dentist because they never believe me at first so they take forever and stab me so many times trying to numb me until they finally use a painkiller that is metabolized differently. 😑 All the painkillers that they've given me to take at home still won't work unless I take another 1,000mg of aspirin or acetaminophen too. I wish there was a cure for this kind of metabolism issue. Another person in my family has it too and it's just hell on us both. I believe something should be able to be developed from grapefruit to help people like us but it seems like it's a highly overlooked issue.
Also, before anyone assumes I just built up a tolerance from recreational drug use or something. No, I have never used recreational drugs and I've been this way for my entire life. My son may also be that way considering ibuprofen won't even lower a fever when he's sick. It's an issue that a lot of people who carry the red hair genetic have apparently.

Stopping Paroxetine was awful (took 3 months).
Rapid increases in dose may cause Serotonin Syndrome but this risk is normally pretty small. You are more likely to suffer other side affects like headaches, nausea. Fever is a concern.
Grapefruit interacts with a ton of medications. Most antidepressants have very little interplay with it. The mentioned CYP3A4 Enzyme is actually a whole family of enzymes. Unless you have a bad gene for the right version of an enzyme to metabolize your drug it is unlikely to affect you. Genetic testing is available affordably for this type of interaction.
St. Johns Wort is a serious risk. There may be a genetic component but it is very common in serotonin syndrome cases.
5-HTP is a serotonin precursor. It doesn't tend to interact unless people have rarer genetic conditions or are on TCAs/MAOIs. Most Tryptophan gets destroyed in the stomache. It is not stable in Acids. Bio-availability is normally 40% or worse.
Lots of medications interact with the CYP enzymes. Expect your pharmacist to notice as their software and training is to look for this; your doctor likely will not. This is why it is important to try to use the same pharmacy.
It is really bad to mix different types of anti-depressants without supervision. I currently use two. I am fine. But there is a real reason to be concerned otherwise. The TCAs and MAOIs are especially dangerous.

For the withdrawals I used Benadryl to ease the discomfort like (brain zaps, fatigue, headaches, just plain yucky feeling). I have used paroxetine since my teen years. I’ve tried to go natural with OTC supplements vitamins, herbs and even therapy. But it has always been Paroxetine that does the job. I also have MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and believe it or not, paroxetine helps with nerve discomfort too. After arrival of my son I tried Cymbalta for one whole year (my neurologist recommended) and it did little to nothing for me. My chronic nerve pain and depression was still very present. I developed PPD (Post Partum Depression) really bad. So I was bumped up to 120 mg of Cymbalta (the highest dosage). It worked for maybe 2 weeks and still I was not myself. So I finally told my Dr that I want to switch back to paroxetine and indeed after about a month (20mg) 2nd month (30mg) and finally the 3rd month (40mg). Right now I can say I’m feeling like my old self again (pre-baby). I’m less anxious, and my depression has vastly improved compared to taking Cymbalta smh. Anyway, I hope what little advice I provided will help you. Just make sure to taper down. It’s brutal but you will get through it! *hugs* ☺️

No, really no. You took the wrong message because you're the wrong audience for this info [ETA: and it's honestly not stated/explained well here]. Grapefruit is a problem with almost any drug, NSAIDs carry some risks for anyone (be extra aware or just stick to acetaminophen/paracetamol). No doc on earth would dream of putting you on an SSRI and an MAOI, or tricyclic. You're not gonna just be randomly downing antipsychotics or lithium one day. And the vast majority of SSRI takers have no (additional) problem w/ drinking.

    • @adriennecloeter7394
      @adriennecloeter7394 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Basically everything has the possibility of causing interactions, whether you're using prescription meds or natural remedies. I've been on SSRIs for over 8yrs now and I've never had any problems aside from a higher dose causing some brain fog, so I went back down and was fine. I eat grapefruit all the time, take ibuprofen for pain, and drink alcohol and haven't had any problems. Wish he would give some statistics on how rare it is for these interactions to actually happen. Don't rule out prescription medications just because theres a possibility of side effects.

It’s flat out WRONG to suggest that discontinuation syndrome occurs only when you suddenly discontinue SSRI. I suffered severe discontinuation syndrome DESPITE carefully following my doctor’s instructions when discontinuing Paxil. This situation didn’t simply affect me, so much so in fact that class action lawsuits have successfully proceeded against Glaxo Smith Kline (manufacturers of Paxil) precisely because of this and other problems with this medication. You should have been more clear that no matter how gradually you decrease this medication, you may STILL suffer discontinuation syndrome. There are people who haven’t been successful in ceasing Paxil, because of this problem.

I was on paroxetine for 15 years. For SIX years I struggled with sleeping 12-15 hours a day! I could sleep 7 hours then fall back to sleep for 8 hours more.. The doctors & specialists couldn't figure it out why. I went gluten & dairy free for a year. I underwent many tests & different drugs, which had their own side effects, to figure out why my sleep was so messed up. None of this helped. It was debilitating. Everything around me was falling apart . I couldn't take care of my house or yard. The doctor didn’t taper me off just switched to another drug with the same issues. I also was on nsaids & opiates for severe arthritis. For several weeks after stopping the drug I experienced daily throwing up, diarrhea, brain zaps & daily weepiness. The withdrawl depression was so much worse than the original depression . It's been 10 months since stopping paroxetine and the the weepiness continues. Imagine that your feeling ok and talking to someone about something mundane like the weather and quite suddenly you're fighting off tears & sobbing for no reason. I've become more reclusive as this is very embarrassing. I did find out that paroxetine shouldn't be taken for more than 2 years. I also suffer from migraines & hashimotos. The drug had zero effect on the migraines .There has to be better treatment for depression than these drugs. Medical cannabis has worked better for me. The doctors prescribing these drugs don't really know in depth how to prescribe these drugs or how to discontinue their use. There are some people who have to taper off these meds FOR YEARS! Imagine enduring negative side effects from theses drugs and having to taper off for 3-4 years. If you doubt my experience just check out Facebook pages for support for patients trying to stop taking these drugs.

I can confirm what she said is TRUE. I was on Paxil for 3 years and had withdrawal symptoms for a year and a half. Horrible HORRIBLE side effects and withdrawals. Never again am I going back on anti depressants. I have been taking psilocybin instead and has helped me so much with my severe depression and anxiety. No side effects, withdrawals, or addiction. Best part about it is all natural mushroom. I suggest to start microdosing them. Take them at small amounts at a time because too much will do the opposite and you will have a negative experience.

One time, about fifteen years ago, my former doctor and also former pharmacy had one heck of a time communicating, and I wasn't as on top of my medications as I am now. I ran out of Celexa, and was out for close to a week. It got to where I was crying uncontrollably and feeling really terrified of my emotional state. I ended up calling the doctor on call to get the stupid script filled.
Never. Ever. Again. It was hell.
Don't do it. Skipping a day by mistake now and then doesn't seem to affect me (this is extremely rare), but there's a reason they say to never just stop taking SSRIs. Maybe this is true for SNRIs as well? I'm not sure.
I'm on two antidepressants, but with doctor supervision, and no ill effects.

LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life. I became a better version of myself
This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body. A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. Now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before."
