    I literally just watched Shrek this afternoon. While I fully agree with your analysis, I have always seen a glaring flaw in the fairy godmother's plan (assuming that she is the one who placed the spell on Fiona). The flaw is that once Fiona was cursed (she has to be cursed no earlier than 4 or 5 and was not born with this condition because she actually knows the words to the spell) she was destined to always be an ogre. The spell specifically says that "By day one way, by night another, this shall be the norm. Until you receive true loves first kiss, and then take loves true form". First off, true love is a complete, mutual love. Charming only truly loved himself for one. And the only way to fully and truly love someone it see everyone of them and accepting, supporting, and loving them all. With this logic, loves true form is the form of an ogre because only in true love can you see past someone's rough exterior and see the pure soul in side.

      i get exactly what you mean, but you know if we do assume Fairy Godmother put the spell on Fiona she could've created the words to the spell for that exact reason! Knowing it won't be true love between Fiona and Charming so she could have had it where the ogre spell wears off ONLY if prince charming kisses her so (in her plans) it would trick Fiona into beliving it is actually true love even though it really is not.

    I'm pretty sure this is cannon but it was just never properly explored in the films, it's a blessing to have you hear explaining and piecing everything together

      Aww, you're too kind! I'm sure I'm not the first to figure out Fairy Godmother set the whole thing up, but, until recently, I never questioned why they added in this whole extra step with the tower. Not to mention, dragon wasn't there when Charming went through, but what was he going to do to subdue her? That's always left me curious! 0.o

    • @adolfodef
      @adolfodef 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe the reason Charming took so long to get into the castle was precisely the need to defeat the she-Dragon in a way that was both safe and looked awesome [the precise conditions and requirements for this "step" may have took much more time than expected]; as her mother´s whole masterplan (that took many decades, probably involving herself getting pregnant, or adopting and raising a human boy), to eventually becoming The Queen; should not fail because of his incompetence or a lousy mistake.
      -> Alternatively: She truly loves her dumb son and would never risk his life against a fully sized dragon without multiple safeties in place.

      I love the video! And yes I wish it was explored more in the films and perhaps showed a backstory for Fiona, I.e. the curse and life in the tower since she was put there as a child

  • @meganmarchionda1165
    @meganmarchionda1165 6 ปีที่แล้ว +121

    Yeah, as aged I realized how messed up the whole Fiona thing was. And if we're going by the Shrek Muscial verse (yes it exist) then Fiona was there since she was a little girl and for twenty years. I consider those separate universes but Shrek 2 implies Fiona was young when she sent away.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      You are correct! I remember in the play Shrek and Fiona pass each other on their way to their fates as kids. But in her diary she writes about going away to the tower as a girl.

  • @adolfodef
    @adolfodef 6 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    Queen Lilian is a human, Harold is a frog -> Fiona is half human, half frog.
    She was ALWAYS an ogre (a compatible hybrid); then she got "partiallly fixed" with a spell that _supressed_ her frog aspects during the day [maybe casted before she was born, or inmediatly after (before Lilian could see her)].
    The same spell needed for the "turn into human" potion on Shrek 2 was a suplemental magic for the whole plan on "having her living a lie" for the rest of her life.

    Seeing that SHREK is the title of the movie, that might "force" viewers to pay more attention to the backstory of Shrek himself. Instead of other characters. So this video is kind of an awakening to see the history if Fiona. so glad that you're peicing iy together and explaining it to us

    Also, the older you get, and the more you watch these movies, you find lessons that I do not think were even meant but very important to have. Some of the obvious are "Never judge a book by it's cover", "good things come to those that wait", "winners never cheat and cheaters never win", but the one that I learned today is so profound and obvious, I am surprised that it took me this long to see it (I am old enough to have gone with friends and saw this in theaters. I was in highschool). The lesson was "Beware what you say, one person's "curse" is another person's life".

      Isn't is strange? The whole first movie she's just a princess locked in a random tower and no one knows or cares why. Then they show Fiona's whole backstory and it's like, wait a minute...

  • @StrongRex
    @StrongRex 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Don't you remember what happened to King Harold at the end of Shrek 2, when he took the hit for Shrek from the Fairy Godmother? He was turned back into a frog. And he was deeply ashamed of being a frog, which fueled most of his behavior as a human throughout the movie. It was likely that as a frog, he fell in love with Lillian and the Fairy Godmother knew about this, therefore making a deal with him that if she turns him human and he gets Lillian, any daughter he has would marry her son and the throne would be passed down to him. When Fiona is born, I can see Harold initially trying to back out of the deal (likely because he wants his daughter to marry for love rather than obligation), and the Fairy Godmother cursed her so she turned into an ogress at night, and set it up to where ONLY Charming would rescue her. I'm sure she took many extra steps (like, notice how most animals in the Shrek universe are able to talk? What if Fairy Godmother took away the Dragon's voice, promising to give it back to her if she killed everyone else who tried to rescue Fiona but allowed Charming to pass?)

    • @YellowBear-kx1ff
      @YellowBear-kx1ff 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Lisette Garcia Actually, she was a fortune teller in an alternate opening for Shrek 1. In this opening, Fiona was born an ogre and that was the reason she was locked in the tower. She escapes the tower and comes across Fortuna. She gives Fiona a Beauty potion which has no effect but it gave her her curse as a side effect. And in the final version, some people have theorised she was the witch who put the spell on Fiona.

    Without watching the video yet:
    I think she was 'locked way' as a deal to the Fairy god mother and her son. It would be made look like he really rescued her, she would fall in love with Prince Charming , her curse would be broken and he'd become the next king

  • @TheRachaelLefler
    @TheRachaelLefler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think mainly it was set up as a test. The idea was supposed to be that the dragon would keep out everyone except Charming, and perhaps Charming had some secret potion or knowledge of a weakness of the dragon, making him the only one who could kill him. That way instead of it just being a forced arranged marriage that he knew Fiona would not accept, the king and Godmother arranged for it to look like a romantic rescue. Like what you said but I'm thinking it was not to break Fiona down so much as to build up a fake romance between Fiona and Prince Charming. To make him seem heroic in her eyes instead of as the narcissist he really is.

    Wow...I remember watching this as a kid, I didn’t really like Fiona’s first impression because it was the cookie cutter mold of a classic Disney-style princess that’d been forced down our throats for what felt like long enough. It felt like finding a dusty old hat tbh. I only started liking Fiona when she broke from that act and started to get real. Now, reviewing this movie as an adult, I can now see that all this time I was looking at what must’ve been a victim of indoctrination...being brainwashed into believing that being a dainty helpless princess and waiting to be rescued by a prince is what true love is all about. A form of brainwashing that inevitably Fiona finds the strength to snap out of...
    Also, yeah, the only reason I even like Shrek The Third at all is because of a crush I have on Artie (guilty ☺️).

    What I always wondered was, why was Fiona cursed in the first place? Did they ever explain that in any of the films? Did her parents make a witch mad or something? I always wondered if it wasn't the Fairy Godmother who did it in order to get her son on the path to marrying up to royalty.

  • @katmaw5910

    I roughly knew this already but hearing it, it simply makes complete sense. Am I the only one who (although I already loved that Shrek came first and made it clear to her of her true beauty) is EVEN MORE touched by Shrek's honest love for her?
    "But you are beautiful" now seems more powerful (silly, I know) than just a typical love-line.

  • @aseyafloyd2924
    @aseyafloyd2924 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I believe Fiona was born an Ogre and the king asked the fairy godmother for help to make her beautiful but the fairy godmother had her own plans so she put a curse and since Fiona was supposedly so ugly the king and queen sent her away till the curse can be broken and then the Fairy godmother would make sure that was her son and the son would take the throne so it didn't matter if Fiona was ugly or not

  • @bluebeanie561

    Not to mention the Fairy Godmother could've used the excuse of locking Fiona away as 'following the story' since that's how she'll get her 'Happily Ever After' to the Queen and King.
    I would like to point out that since little, Fiona was told since little before she was going to be locked away that in the tower that she'll be rescued by Prince Charming, married, and be taken to her family. And the FarFarAway had been following on what's their 'story', including the villains.
    Also, Fiona had a doll that only had a 'grateful damsel in distress' quote that she herself repeated to Shrek. A freaking doll!
    So was already taught since little to follow "her story" if she wants to be happy.

    okay I know this is an older video but this is something that has always pissed me off so first I’m grateful to finally find a logical explanation amongst many others who think they’re making sense without actually doing so. HOWEVER I still have the question of WHY they even let her live with her parents at all??? why was she not locked away either from birth or from the moment she was was cursed??

    The idea is interesting but big plot hole. In the 2nd movie, Shrek reads Fiona's childhood diary where she mostly talks about marrying Prince Charming so either: A) She wanted to to marry Charming or B) Prince Charming is generic term for a true love which shows Fiona already believed all that fairy tale stuff. B isn't hard to believe because in the 1st movie Fiona is all about the "Right way" went talking about True Love. The two reasons I would believe Fiona would get locked away is because "that's how it's suppose to be/it's a fairy-tale" or to keeping her from falling in love with someone else as she got older. I think the Fairy Godmother wanted to make a fairy-tale story for her son when he married (She is basically the person who makes them happen for everyone else so why not her son too?). Fairy Godmother is also shown to be a believer of the "right way". Plus, Fiona was kid when she got locked away as she wrote about it in her diary. Prince Charming was probably a kid too so I doubt Fairy Godmother could safely tell if Prince Charming was going to be a Jerk 15 years later.

    Wait, the queen DOES know about the king’s past. They represent the tale “the princess and the frog”. In fact, the Fairy Godmother helped the king turn into a human because he had fallen in love with the queen. That’s shown in Shrek 2, when the queen tells the king that she still remembers when they used to hangout at a pond or something like that. So i believe that what she doesn’t know is that the Fairy Godmother helped the king become human.

    Have you made a theory on white diamond or in other cases, her pearl? I heard how whites pearl used to belong to pink. And when our pearl noted" I was given to pink diamond a few thousand years after she was given the earth." Why would the diamonds wait so long to give her a pearl? I think that whites pearl was originally pinks pearl. And. A hint are all the diamonds pearls. Blue and yellows pearls both have their gems in the same location while our pearl's gem is on her for head and whites pearl had her gem on her navel. We can tell pink was a little immature so having the pearl that now belongs to white as her pearl wasn't the best choice. White made pink switch their pearls with our pearl who is strict and cautious. A more "perfect" pearl. And when pinks pearl was given to white, white saw her as an "imperfection" as to white being the most perfect diamond probably abusing now her pearl until she was practically a robot and leaving a scar.
