    I’m so glad you brought this up. I love Greek mythology so much and watching Disney Hercules I saw so much I didn’t relize the first time watching it. But there was in Greek mythology a time that a girl became immortal when she proved to be a hero to be with Eros ( god of love) she is then made a goddess to be the immortal wife of Eros she was mortal turned immortal.

      But to be fair that myth is about insecurity on the self and how we all engage with each other through love and what losing love will make us do to gain it back. But still my favorite myth

    I think that at the end, the movie is trying to teach a moral lesson about how Heroes don't act in the promise of Reward, they do so out of the strength of their character.
    Throughout Herc's Hero-Montage where he takes-on the remaining 12 Labors after the Hydra, it's explained that Herc's hero-status has become quite lucrative for him and Phil, as they're able to effectively shill-out Herc's image for brand-recognition and endorsement deals. In essence, this became entangled with Herc's heroism; Herc himself never seemed to be greedy or desire the money as much as Phil did, but that didn't change the fact that he'd effectively gotten something out of being a Hero. But not only that, I think that Herc's mindset was always off...While Herc wasn't expecting or demanding a financial reward from his hero work, he WAS still expecting to be rewarded by having his God-Hood restored...
    I think that's what the movie was trying to establish; because by the end, becoming a God didn't even matter to Herc. All that mattered was undoing the damage he caused and saving Meg. And it got to the point where he was willing to sacrifice himself in order to save her, and that's what being a True Hero is...doing what is right, knowing that you gain nothing from it, and it could even put yourself at risk...
    THE PROBLEM IS...Herc already did something that qualified as doing that before. When Hades unleashes the Titans, he commissions the Cyclops to go to Thebes and kill Hercules. When the Cyclops arrives, the now De-Powered Hercules presents himself to the monster, knowing that he can't possibly win. Effectively speaking, he is sacrificing himself to - I should think - give the people a chance to flee (as there's no guarantee the Cyclops would stop even if Hercules died.)
    But then when Phil comes back and inspires Herc to fight back even without his strength...he STILL manages to beat the Cyclops and send it toppling over the edge. Effectively speaking, this should've cemented Herc's position as a True Hero, and yet the only thing that comes of this is Meg getting hurt, thus breaking Hades' deal and restoring Herc's strength.
    The argument can be made that Herc wasn't really acting in behalf of the people of Thebes or even to stop the Cyclops; that instead he was feeling sorry for himself after being betrayed by Meg, and simply wanted to die because of how bad he felt. So in the end...it's an interesting topic to debate over Intentions vs. Actions. Does Herc sacrificing himself to give the people a chance to survive really become tainted just because he wanted to die?

    • @jessieBird96
      @jessieBird96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, to all of this, with an added, he did still get something out of defeating the cyclops, even if it was just getting his powers back after Meg got hurt. It's pretty clear that true sacrifice was what was necessary, it wasn't until the fates were literally in the process of cutting his life string that he got his god-hood back. I feel like if he had gotten crushed by the pillar that Meg saved him from, he would've gotten his god-hood back, although we'll never know.

    Being a hero (in the muses eyes) and being a god aren’t the same thing. Anyone can become a hero but to become a true god you have to truly sacrifice yourself for another. Hercules doesn’t do this until he agrees remove his powers for meg, meg gets injured, Hercules gets his power back as the contract is broken and then Hercules jumps into the river of death here there is a chance he could without his god status being returned. As Zeus says in the movie- a hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength but by the strength of his heart. So in the case of God’s they need to sacrifice themselves completely for love to be a true god. Otherwise any of those wood be heroes Philoctetes trained would be on Olympus. However short a length of time.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      But I have some issues with that. But, as Zeus said, you must be a hero to become a God, and the Muses are the proclaimers of heroes. So, why create that plot hole at all? Why not just say the Muses are goddesses of art and inspiration?
      Also, what did the GODS do to be worthy of being a god? Were they once humans who changed their status? Many stories about them go on about how cruel they are, and the movie only shows them like aristocrats who sit on their butts partying while Greek citizens are put in harms way. For that mater, how were there earthquakes and floods and all that if Zeus already locked up the Titans?!
      Anyways, if Hercules was born a god, why did he need to prove anything? What did Hera prove to have her status? Or Hermes? Sure, Hercules had that poison drink, but it comes off like committing suicide changed him back more than saving Meg. Hmm... so if Pain and Panic had killed him as a baby, would he have just returned to God status anyways? Interesting idea to consider! But, overall, I still take issue that Zeus didn't just TELL Hercules the full story rather than have him frustrated and grinding out heroic deeds that didn't matter.

    • @Ikajo
      @Ikajo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Fangirl Dionysus was actually a mortal demigod in Greek mythology who was exalted to godhood after the war with the giants. Also according to Greek mythology, Poseidon was also the god of earthquakes. Then again, the Disney movie is so far removed from the mythology it is ridiculous. Granted I've learnt most of my mythology from reading Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan. He keeps things close enough to the myths that you learn stuff. Apparently Heracles was a jerk in the myths.

    • @joerees6468
      @joerees6468 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The Fangirl The way I see it they meant the muses are proclaimers in the sense of the word that they simply tell the public the stories of the heroes. They don’t have any official capacity. Basically just gives the story a fun narrator cos they’re telling the story of Hercules. Wouldn’t make much sense then narrating the film without that line
      And I think the whole ‘who is a god?’ is kind of an automatic thing that happens. And Zeus can’t force it to happen but he’s the one who can prevent it from occurring.
      Also the gods were born gods. The same way Hercules was born a god but then he was given a mortal potion to make him mortal so he couldn’t interfere with Hades’ plan.
      An alternative idea I have about the whole god thing is that Zeus suspected something was wrong and that a big event was going to happen because he knew someone took Hercules. He wanted Hercules safe on earth/ as a last resort to save the world in the event that something major happened.

      Plus giving the fact in the Disney film Hercules it was implied most of the hero acts was for selfish reasons as Hercules thought he was being a hero but let most of it get to his head and not realizing it until he had to save Meg for the right reasons

  • @deannacallahan1072

    The condition in the movie is that hercules proves himself a TRUE Hero on Earth; which happens when he offers to take Meg's place in the river of souls. Hades hadn't counted on him surviving retrieving Meg's soul.

    Actually what made Hercules a true hero was that he was willing to put Meg's well being above his own. Becaus up until then everything Herc did was about becoming a god.

      True. He's been doing this for all the wrong reasons. Until he had to learn and grow. Which his character growth. So Zeus didn't lie. He got character growth, which I like he learned and grows.

  • @MrMegaSuperDuperMe
    @MrMegaSuperDuperMe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I think the issue about Hercules not becoming a true hero even after all those monster fights was because for most of the film, all Hercules wanted was to be a true hero so he could rejoin his parents on Olympus. Even though he's a good person and he did really want to help people, deep down, every heroic deed he did was only for the purpose of rejoining the gods. That's why he got upset when Zeus said that his deeds weren't good enough when he bragged about being made an action figure. Heck, when Hercules first met Phil, he said and I quote, _"But if I don't become a true hero, I'll never be able to rejoin my father, Zeus."_
    But when Hercules saved Meg, it was a completely selfless act. He wasn't thinking about rejoining the gods, he was only thinking about an innocent person's life at stake. So when he tried to selflessly sacrifice his life to save Meg's even though that meant he would never be able to return to Mt. Olympus, he was deemed a true hero and became a god. Hades even told him, _"You get her out. She goes. You stay."_ He knew he would never get back out again, but he jumped in anyway. And that completely selfless heroic act is what it took to restore his godhood. At the end, Hercules learned what's truly important to be a true hero.
    Just think of Superman. Superman isn't a hero because of all his powers and accomplishments. Superman is a true hero because he's completely selfless when he's saving lives and fighting bad guys, always adjusting his power to keep everyone around him safe, even if it could cost him his own life in the process. A good example of this is Superman's "World of Cardboard" speech from the Justice League cartoon. Superman isn't a hero for fame, fortune, or some other ulterior motive. He's a true hero because he genuinely cares about the people that he protects.
    *_"A true hero isn't measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his heart."_*
    ~ Zeus, Hercules(1997)
    Also, I always considered Hercules losing his godlyness at the end to be Hercules himself willingly giving up his godhood by himself. That would make sense with the line that he said right before he gives it up. "A life without Meg, even an immortal life, would be empty."

    It's funny how Disney makes "family-friendly" movies from actual dark origins in the original books and historical moments. Especially about "Disney" princesses. Does it disrespect the original's masterpiece and history? But either way, it's one hell of a ride to end up ruining your childhood by finding the real dark truth about your favorite Disney movies.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You have an interesting point, BUT, stories being changed and retold to suit different audiences isn't a new concept. Even if you look up the legends of Maui, they change in different areas and over time, so there's no one consistent story anywhere! Even the Little Mermaid - read the original, then compare it to Disney's version, THEN compare it to Ponyo by Studio Ghibli. Crazy different!
      As for the real stories and finding them later in life, I think it's sort of fun. Like, oh my gosh, who would have ever guessed you could get Beauty and the Beast from THIS?! lol

    • @okami-chan9772
      @okami-chan9772 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol I know. I think I've read the dark origins like version of the Little Mermaid at my old elementary school. It's not a big novel, it's a thin one and it shorten the story a bit; plus it had a lot of pictures and words but not colored in much.
      I think the cover looked something like this:

      The Fangirl As a kid in the 90s, I also grew up watching Hercules the Legendary Journeys. I think people should be open to different interpretations to classic stories, legends, Fables, and folktales; such as Jean Coutue’s Beauty and the Beast, the 2003 version of Peter Pan, the 1999 version of Alice in Wonderland, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Ever After, The Company of Wolves, Excalibur 1981, and Snow White; A Tale of Terror.

    I saw the nod as more of Zeus accepting hercs decision over him having any say in the matter. And saw his godhood attainment being beyond simple heroics as with Phills whole Hero in the Stars thing. I thought all along it was under Hercs power and that Herc was willingly removing the shackles of Godhood and it's Olympic place to be with Meg rather than Zeus having any say in the matter. As for Pegasus ,Gods only know why he was allowed to stay on Olympus while herc was growing up.

    You have to remember this is Disney-fied Greek Myth. In Myth, Zeus was an ass, Hercules was the result of an affair, and killed Megara and his kids with her in a rage caused by Hera. And Hades is one of the nicer of the Gods.
    But if you want a theory, perhaps Zeus pulled a fast one on Herc for his son's Benefit. While Herc could have been seen as a hero, perhaps the mission was to make Meg a heroine and a potential for Godhood. Then Zeus lets Herc be 'mortal' (Still Secretly a god) and if he loves Meg his whole life... Boom! Both in Olympus. Maybe Meg takes the role of Hebe (Daughter of Zeus and Hera, Goddess of Youth and Hercule's Wife as a God).
    Also in myth, you just had to eat the food and drink of the gods to become divine.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      See, if Hercules was an illegitimate love child, I would understand the way Zeus blocks him from entering Olympus. But, having to stay within the confines of the Disney movie (or else NOTHING is coherent), then it doesn't add up at all!

      The story is rather nasty,but long story short...
      Poseidon raped Medusa in Athena's temple.
      Athena for some reason decided to punish the victim and cursed Medusa.
      Perseus later lopped Medusa's head of and Pegasus was born from the stump.

    I personaly always belived that his "hero work" at the begining doesn't count becouse Hercules does them with becoming a hero in mind, so he is practically doing them for fame which isn't verry heroic.

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think Herc fed off the fame, but that wasn’t his motivation. He would still do hero work if he was hated, but you can’t blame an unpopular kid for being happy that he’s finally accepted. 😂

      @aniflowers1998 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't really blame him. I just always thought that it was the most likely reason for zoes to not acept him as a hero. And I always found it kinda irritating when Hercules tried to convince him that he deserved it with the argument "I'm an action figure!" since that was never what heros where for me. Sure, all the marvel and dc heros get practicaly made to be sold as action figures, but I always thought that a real hero didn't need stuf like that. After all, they should be there to help the people, not to sell a bunch of merchandice. So I gues that's pretty much where my train of thoughts always came from.

    Hey this is just a question. Shouldn't Meg be a god? Hercules turned into a god after risking his life, completely aware, to save Meg. But, Meg saved him before that! She did the same exact thing Hercules did. The movie even states that Meg literally sold her life force to save another's. THAT IS TWO GOOD THINGS! Wow. Meg is getting ripped of. Not a Disney princess. Not a god. She's not even a hero! WHAT THE HELP IS HAPPENING HERE

    May be the fates didn't want herc to be a god for reasons ( likely associated with hades) ence why even after heroic acts he wasn't being turned into a hero.
    I agree that herc in the end degod himself so to speak

    Yes, I heard the part where Disney greek gods are separate from the myth greek gods but I couldn't help but think of a short myth I read a while back. I can't remember who the goddess in the story was, if I had to guess I'd go with Demeter sometime after the loss of Persephone, in the story, the goddess sees a baby boy and falls in love with it declaring it a perfect child and decides to make him a god. So while the mother is out of the room she takes the baby to the hearth and submerges him in some kind of godly fire.
    Naturally, the mother walks back in, sees some random lady throwing her baby into a dang _fire_ and freaks out. This makes the goddess so mad she changes her mind and then just before she leaves the baby and his mother she reveals that she's a goddess and would have granted her child immortal life had she not disrespected in the way she'd done. Completely rubbing it in her face.
    What kind of morel was that suppose to give I wonder..? lol It's probably supposed to be a morel about not assuming the worst of someone's motives, or at least that sounds better than, "let people burn your children." Or maybe it wasn't supposed to have a morel, who knows?
    In any case, becoming a god in ancient Greek myth, based on this one story, seems as easy as simply getting a god to like you enough. And since Disney was going the route that wouldn't make Zeus, for lack of better words, a total hoe, it's only natural that they'd have to come up with their own rules for becoming a god. Because Hercules couldn't have just been half human if they made Hera his mom. XD
    Oh, Disney, I love you, but changing that made some things in your movie way more complicated then they needed to be. At least the music was good.

    My thought is that Pegasus was able to live with the gods because he was a creation of a god (Zues) as a gift for another god (Zues's son). And honestly all of the gods seem to be the high society type. Making or breaking rules. Seeing lesser God's as nothing in comparison to themselves. True Hades wants to rule all. But he also lives in, and tells, the raw truth. Where as his brother Zues and the other God's live in a glimmer of fantasy. Like almost all Disney movies the raw truth is seen as 'evil'.

  • @Zale__
    @Zale__ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Herc's hero work done during the montage was not worthy because he did it with the wrong idea in mind. Remember Zeus said a true hero is measured by the strength of their heart. He did it mostly to get back into mount Olympus and thought that fame and fortune were the means with which to measure his greatness as a hero. It was not until he did not care about the fame and fortune and did heroic deeds for the sake of the people he did them for (the people and citizens he saved) he was not a TRUE hero. Also the muses as proclaimers of heroes means the telling of their stories, not ruling whether or not they are a hero.

    Hercules isn't a true hero when he saves the people because he did it for selfish reasons. He did it because he wanted to be a god not because he wanted to help them. When he saves Meg he does it selflessly, not caring about his own status or health. The difference is his motive

    • @TheFangirlWatches
      @TheFangirlWatches  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would counter argue that Hercules did train to be a hero because he wanted on Mt. Olympus, BUT he had a caring, desperate to be accepted personality, and I think that drove him more than anything else. He fed off the love he got from herowork. And, I still insist that it the Muses sing a song calling you a hero, then you’re a hero. If they decide who is a hero, they don’t throw that term around lightly.

    I have a theory that him and Ariel are cousins. But hates is also Hercules dad's brother who maybe fell in love with Ursulas mom and had her and her sisters. That's why Hercules and Ariel both make it out of the soul's thing. Notice that both are in water and I believe they are the only two scenes like that in the old Disney films. #jamiebolttheory

    • @willis1383

      actually, he is ariel's first cousin once removed! poseidon and zeus = brothers. poseidon's son = triton, zeus's son = hercules. triton and hercules = cousins. triton's daughter = ariel. ariel and hercules = first cousins once removed. so its not really a theory that they're cousins if you combine mythos and disney.

    I do believe Heracles may have had his love turn Megara immortal. Think about it. If Heracles earned his immortal back by willingly trading his life for Megara, then Meg surely earned it as well for taking the pillar to save his life. Like Dionysus rescued his mortal mother, Semele from Hades. And she was given immortality, now as Thyone. And besides, it is pointless for them to remain mortal, where they would be doomed in the river of Styx for eternity! 🎗️
