Farewell to a KING: A Tribute to NEIL PEART

  • We are trying to grasp the reality of the news that “The Professor” Neil Peart has left us.
Considered by many to be one of the best rock drummers of all time, along with penning impressive lyrics, Peart was renowned for his proficiency, his technical expertise and unique performance style, expertly weaving together techniques from different musical genres, blending jazz and big band with hard rock. He was inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1983. Peart‘s writing also extended beyond music: He penned a number of memoirs exploring his life and travels.
RUSH finished their final tour in 2015; Peart was done with the road and eager to spend more time with his wife, Carrie Nuttal, and daughter Olivia. He would never be seen on stage again.
We feel numb and in disbelief. But there’s no denying that the cause of our grief is gratitude - that such a genius raised the bar so high and delighted us in so many ways. We are all so much richer for his life, for what he shared with all of us. Go listen to a RUSH album, or three or four.
We say Farewell to a King today… but his beat will not be stilled. #NeilPeart #TheProfessor #Rush #Legend #RIP

Peart was referring to the garden of memories within our minds. Tend to your garden, feed your cherished memories with the water of your tears. Take time to keep the memory of those who have passed before you alive, vibrant, in love. Keep the memory alive. Just as you are doing here, listening to this music, to these words. A great mind, a great spirit, a great heart whom we have all come to love and adore has passed before us, and he has taken his garden with him, and told us of ours, to take with us~ Neil, you will never know the treasure you have provided to so, so many of us, but it is real. Thank you Mr Peart.

I’m currently 32, I started playing drums when I was 11. I had been playing for a few months and I heard Tom Sawyer on the classic rock station and I asked my dad who was that the drums were so awesome to me. He said that’s rush. So I bought all the cds at Walmart that week and got dvds I could and I would try to imitate him because I was infatuated with his drumming. Then 2 years later they came to my home town to play and my dad got me tickets for my bday. I remember seeing Neil run out when they opened and saying there he is that’s Neil Peart. I still play drums w many different bands and genres of music but he was truly a role model and influence to me as a child. We are so lucky to have had him. Rest In Peace Mr Peart. There will never ever be another.

The Garden is such a fitting sendoff to one of the greatest drummers of all time. Rush has influenced me as a musician since my mid teens. Through Neil's lyricism and powerful, creative drumming, he has influenced generations of not only drummers, but musicians in general. The slide show of Neil through the decades made me realize the true dedication and commitment the three of them had - not being drawn to the "glittering prizes and endless compromises" of the music industry - just believing in themselves and their music. This is why they were able to make incredible and timeless music for more than forty years. I was able to see them on many tours, and each show was mind-blowing. I never met Neil, but I felt like I lost a friend when he passed away. This one was tough to digest. His drumming will continue to influence countless generations to come. His beat will carry on. RIP Professor, you are greatly missed.

“We are only immortal for a limited time” -“The Professor”, Neil Peart
He contributed largely to pulling me out of a near-suicidal depressive state and encouraged me to continue drumming, which has led me to success I could’ve never foreseen a year ago. From the bottom of this young heart, I love you Neil. Thank you for everything. You are and always will be my Number 1 inspiration in this and all future lives. ❤️

What a lot of people fail to realize. This band and Neil in particular made most of their albums on TAPE, certainly all the originals, no click tracks, there was no way to digitally fix mistakes. As a drummer I have listened for miscues, a little slip, an unintentional accent. All hoping to prove he was human, lol . Any musician that has spent time in a studio can attest to the stress and absolute dedication this takes . He certainly among the greatest drummers and has inspired millions to pick up the sticks and give it a go. Myself included. I will never reach his level and I'm ok with that, A special human being that found 2 other special human beings and they created something over 40 years that will indeed reach into the next millennium. To his band mates, I'm so sorry for the loss of a great friend, To Mr Peart, your work is done here sir, Thank you

Lisa! Shame on you! You used 'Neil' and 'miscue' in the same sentence. Grrrrr! To your point, those three dudes put together the epic 'Xanadu' while on tour; fleshing it out...working out the kinks. Then - because all three were superhuman - they recorded it (all 8 to 9 minutes of it) in a single take. Flawlessly. I'm always humbled by that whenever my paradiddles lack the sufficient diddle. R.I.P. Professor.

I was blessed to see them no fewer than 25 times over the years, brought my younger brother, my children, his children into the mix. Nothing cooler than seeing RUSH fans bringing their children to shows for them to experience what we had for many decades. Neils passing was like losing a close friend, he touched all of us with his passion, heart, and determination to live life to its FULLEST. God Bless Neil. Until we meet again...
Loved Neil since 1979. He was the king of drums and lyrics but he was also a nice n funny guy. One memory I have is from early 90s. I was at a Rush concert I think in San Antonio. Towards the end of concert I moved to the right side of stage where Geddy usually plays. There was a guy standing on balcony there with his son. Neil sent his drumsticks to that kid as he exited.
    A stage hand brought them
I thought that was so cool cuz I used to take my kid to Rush concert as well. Rest in peace and happiness!

Mel Wilson, I had no idea that Neil really was saying Goodbye to all of us... I just thought he was saying goodbye because of the nonstop touring he had done in the 1970's. I was a Senior in H.S. in 1983, and I finally saw Rush in Minneapolis, MN. I'm sure now that he was suffering from Brain Cancer in 2012, but he was going to let us know of it. I can now see how it was HIS Swan Song, and it was such a moving tribute! Semper Fidelis

John Roos Neil was diagnosed midway through 2016. Life expectancy with glioblastoma is 1 to 2 years, which he exceeded by a year and a half. Had he known in 2012, we would have lost him several years ago.

    • @apieceofdirt4681
      @apieceofdirt4681 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

With respect, I don’t think that’s exactly correct. Neil didn’t have glioblastoma in 2012. Maybe he knew the day would come, sooner rather than later, that he would walk away from the music. He just lost the fire and wanted to spend time with his relatively new family. He was tired after 40 plus years. There was nothing else to prove. He and the other 2 members of RUSH finally got the respect they deserved. The sad part is, if the story is true and he suffered with his illness for 3 and a half years, that means he was only retired from RUSH for only a few months when he was given his deadly diagnosis. I’m sure in the end the only thing he cared about was not being able to see his young daughter grow up. His legacy isn’t the music. His legacy is his daughter because a large part of Neil’s humanity is alive and well in her.

@@usmcfutball As long as we're sharing, here's my story:
As a 15 year old I was laying on a couch in the basement of somebody's house I didn't know after a party the previous night. I was woken up when somebody put on the stereo and played "Broones Banes/The Trees." The beautiful opening guitar and then the intensity of the rest of the song really grabbed my attention. I asked somebody "Who the hell was that?" And they said "Rush."
Honestly, I'd never heard of them but that same week I picked up "Hemipheres" and their just-released "Permanent Waves" album and Iwas hooked! A friend of mine got tickets for their tour in 1980 and I saw them for the 1st time and never looked back. I saw them on every tour since then at least twice and as of R40, I had seen them a total of 37 times!
They were and are the soundtrack to my life. Even to this day, any time I listened to rush I always pick up something that I haven't picked up before or it gathers a new meaning to me that it didn't have before. Their music and Neil's ls lyrics are truly the gift that keeps on giving!🤘😎♥️

Mr. Peart, a musical and lyricist maestro and virtuoso who was and never will be, equaled. His legend is immortalized for the rest of the ages. All other drummers past, present, and future have no choice but to kneel in homage and respect. A musician that not only set the gold standard but, exceeded it. To me, his most admirable quality, despite knowing full well he was the best that ever was and ever will be, was his humility and sincere from-the-heart gratitude for his skills, his friends, and his family. 2112 hooked me on RUSH and I'm as rabid now as I was 40 years ago. His passing is a dagger in the heart. Besides losing a once-in-a-lifetime world treasure, mankind has lost a truly decent human being .

I have been a RUSH fan and a BIG Neil fan since the age of 15. Then in 2010-2011, I took a 10 year old stepson who was struggling with the ache of a Mom that left him, with me to see Rush on the Time Machine tour. He had joined the high school band searching for a way to cope and fit in and I guess take his mind off of things. He developed a love of the trumpet. But when he saw RUSH and especially Neil, he said to me, "Wow Dad, that totally changes my view of music." He is now 20, about to go into his 3rd year in college in pursuit of a masters in music. Plays in the college band, and in the college jazz band, which is where his heart is. He hopes eventually to become a music teacher himself after performing for a few years. All of this direction from a angry 10 yr old after one Rush show. I wish I could have thanked all three of the guys for that much help in getting him on the right path but especially Neil whom he thought was one of the greatest people, not only drummer.
I have to say, after all the struggles I had growing up and listening to all of those classic lps, THANK YOU! To Alex, Geddy, and Neil. Some of us may never be able to fully express how your music touched our lives.

The typical survival time for Glioblastoma once diagnosed is 12 to 15 months. Less that 7% survive 5 years after diagnosis and that would be with a lot of treatment and physical and mental decline. Clockwork Angels came out in 2012 so there is no way he knew.
