Sitting here and stumbled on to this. Now that Neil has passed, I'm so moved by this video. I've been a professional drummer in a rock band (in the 80s) in the studio and know the process well. Its so emotional to see Neil being himself joking around and then watching the intensity and emotional response from him as he's playing this song. At this point in time, Neil is not a young man and yet, playing at this level even for a 25 year old would be a work out. It's good for a drummer's soul to see this dear man do what he was born to do.... To me, watching him behind the drums.... it's at that place he is home....

+panda44r well said. In the late 60's when I began to play a kit at the ripe age of 9, I was playing Beatles, Cream, the Who, CCR and the like on my way to discovering Ian Paice when 'In Rock' came out. Paicey served me very well throughout the early to mid 70's. Then I bought 'Fly by Night' and the rest, as they say, was history. My progress from 1975 through 'Moving Pictures' was astonishing. Being self taught, I had no idea of my potential, but those 6 years emulating "the Professor" turned me into the drummer I became and I thank Neil Peart for that inspiration. I was lucky to see Rush on 4 tours in a row starting in 1978 with 'Hemispheres' through 'Signals' in 1982 and now 2018 marks my 50th year as a drummer.

Amazing, one of the best drummers on the planet, best lyricist, and the most under rated author out there---his books are truly more well written than the vast majority of "well known" authors/writers. Though I truly hate to see the touring come to an end, you almost have to tip your hat and just say thank you for the decades of giving the world such incredibly awesome music. There will never be another 3 piece rock band that will touch what these guys have done. Peart just seems like the most down to earth guy, always smiling with a great sense of humor, and such quick wit. Really going to miss seeing them every year:( Thought it was so cool to see so many young people, 20 and under, at the last Rush show I saw, their music is truly timeless, wish them all the best in their "retirement"---hope they live long and prosper:)

Yes...indeed...it is MIND BOGGLING to think of what Neil has done within his career(s) and also how he has conquered tragedies that would have been insurmountable to/for many. The 'drums drive' he shares with us on the outside is a reflection of the thunder he must have had inside, just to carry on and with so much poetry and grace. Neil is a lesson in living multi-dimensionally and has had such a great part as Rush, in my life since 1979. I was watching a video, and laughed at the end, where right after a show(with Rush) Neil SPRINTED out the venue and took off! Off(on his bike)to the next show. Not out of ego...THAT is just the reality of his life and the place he has earned. Seems like he would be a great man to know. I have seen Rush nine times over the years and am very thankful for the great; deep music and meaning of 'it all'. I hope Neil has a great rest of his life. He sure has given us enough. Glad i was born and in the right time for Rush. I used to wish that i was his neighbor ...maybe i might have scored some 'hand-me-down' DRUMS ! :D:D:D

As 2020 draws to a close, this video brings a tear to my eye. Mr. Peart was not a friend but we did meet a few times. He was very generous with his time and talent. I was having an issue with adapting to a new technique and he gave me a few ideas on how to erase my old habits. He loved what he did. He loved being a musician. He loved being a writer, he loved being a motorcyclist. And for all those things, we have much admiration for him. Rest in peace Chef Elwood. You forever will live in our hearts. I know this video is from 2013, but that's ok. It is a historical document now.

And with Rush.......dozens of songs. He plays these parts flawlessly and accurately with every show. Truly one the world's greatest drummers, creatively and technically. (IMO) RIP Neil.

God blessed this guy with such a wonderful life. The joy of his playing he gave to so many people. The influence he passed to countless drummers, myself included. He was one of the greats who lived and shared such a great life. Neil reached the pearly gates and once Saint Peter saw him Saint Peter did an insane air drum roll from the 6” concert all the way down to the 18” floor and asked Neil…”tell me how you did that one fill”. He was a good man that lived a great and blessed life.

What an honor to have a brilliant, but shy and introverted human guesting on two of your songs. As a fan of his for 40 years, the now common and predictable words like "influence" and "poet" become almost not enough for what he meant to his fans. But the dignity, strength, respect, ingenuity he gave the instrument will be felt by millions in coming generations. I've always loved this song as it means a lot to me in a personal way. As this was nearly the final sessions of his life, it's nice to see him spread his wings with other musicians. thanks to him for a life well lived and a vapor trail that will continue to light skies across people's imaginations.

+HomesliceDrummer I'm a huge Neil peart fan, rush is my favorite band, but if I'm wrong someone correct me, but "the professor" doesn't apply to his drumming at all, he is called that because of how much he reads, he is worldly, well read, and an intellect, that is the true meaning as the professor, however most would think it is because of his drumming

When this was released nearly 8 years ago, I had only discovered Vertical Horizon within the past year. I was addicted to their sound from the moment I heard their sound. Neil became an inspiration, my only inspiration for many, many years, after the release of 2112 in the late 70's. As a drummer myself, I could not believe that one man could pull off those drum techniques.

When I was a sophomore in high school I was reading For Whom the Bell Tolls right around when the Rush album Signals came out. The second to last song is "Losing It". I like to believe that it was partially inspired by Ernest Hemingway's struggle with writing as he got older. The last lines are:
Sadder still to watch it die
Than never to have known it
For you - the blind who once could see
    The bell tolls for thee.
More than any other band, Rush was the soundtrack of my younger years. The music was great, but the lyrics were what really hooked me. As I've gotten older, songs like Losing IT and The Garden become ever more poignant - RIP Neil Peart

vsribar I know how you feel. By your mentioning of those particular songs I can tell you must have a genuine love for Neil and Rush. I have listened to those two songs so much the last few weeks since his passing. I have cried several times and even tear up watching any video with him in it.
I like my whole family are musically inclined. I fell in love with playing jazz trombone. My oldest son pissed away an opportunity to play for the Marine Corp Field Band. I wanted to pinch his head off. Anyway back in the day watching Neil on MTV inspired me to play the drums. In fact I just got off my set from a 2 hour session. I don’t watch Tv I play music after dinner. I have been working on the Signals album. Playing with Neil as he teaches me along with my ear buds in and volume on high. Been listening to them since about 1986. They rarely got changed out of my radio unless someone wanted to listen to a different band. I never got bored with them. They never came out of the tape deck very long.
With Neils passing I feel almost as I have lost a very close family member even though I never physically met Neil. In fact I have had several relatives that passed away that meant much less to me than Neil does. I was sad when he retired but I’m now so very sad he’s gone. I hope you enjoyed me sharing my love for Neil and the rest of band. Rip Neil in the sky
