You deserve to have the many viewers because you care enough to put out a quality presentation. The one thing I wish you would have covered is how to connect to your computer using wi-fi.
Tab 2, page 4: "Release without lens". When you shoot with an old manual lens with simple adapter, and there is no electronic communication from lens to body, you MUST have this setting enabled. That is, in this situation the camera thinks that there is no lens attached, and it won't shoot unless this setting is enabled.
Camera brands MUST pay you to ship their cameras with your user guide videos (Maybe a QR code?), this is way better than going through the ones that come with the camera.
I know this video is old but there's one important correction for the people looking to customize this (still) popular camera: Long Exposure NR *does* affect RAW files. It doesn't work like other forms of noise reduction where they only apply to JPEGs. Basically, if you take a long exposure (say, 30 seconds) then some pixels may get "hot" and display as bright red or other colors. Long Exposure NR counteracts this by immediately taking an equal length, dark (shutter curtain down) exposure after your initial/real exposure. It then detects these hot pixels in the otherwise black exposure and references their location to then subtract the hot pixels from your initial exposure. This way, the camera knows that it is removing a hot pixel rather than, say, stars in a night sky. The benefit is that your final image has faulty, bright pixels removed. It can drastically improve the quality of a long exposure photo. The downside is that your exposure takes twice as long to finish.
Ok Jared. I just bought my A7R III upgrading from my trusty old 5D Mark II and 7D. I've watched in total 8 Videos on the A7R3 some of which were actually in excess of an hour and I must say by far this is the BEST and MOST INFORMATIVE video. And to think it's only 34 mins. Thanks for this mate.
I am using it for over a week now and I LOVE IT! I was shooting with Canon 6D, and bought this one. For the first 3 days it was really awkward, but after I use it for one week I tried the Canon 6D again and I felt light I am using some ancient piece of camera. The A7 feel super intuitive after I spend 3 or 4 hours of learning the Menu and the way it works. I absolutely love it!
me too. I have 2x Canon 6Ds. a few days with the a7iii (only taking practice shots before my first pro job with it on Saturday), and the 6D seems like an slug-like thing from yester-decade.. the a7iii basically has night vision and the AF is amazing....i think i may have to sell all my Canon gear, get a second A7iii and another lens to be honest! the f2.8 24-70 GM is great so far..
Same here and totally agree. I also tested out the very inexpensive 24-240mm Sony lens for travel. I have G lenses too but I was blown away by this lens simply used on full auto for fast shooting on a vacation. Amazing quality. Just the a7iii and one all-purpose lens ... holiday heaven for me.
I was at our local camera shop with my son and I was asking about the trade-in value of my 6D when my son asked what camera I would trade it in on. I said the Sony a7III.. He said "Father's day is coming up and I want you to have the camera you want"... so he bought it for me on the spot. Goodbye to my 6D and hello to a shiny new a7III. This video helped me to set it up and I have to say it's a phenomenal camera!!

You did a great job explaining what you change and why. The why is the most important part for my purposes. Thanks again and keep up the great work. By the way, I listened to your pod about TH-cam and your channel. This is a good example of a longer video that I watched all the way through. You kept the segments short and to the point, which will keep the folks with short attention spans watching. Just my .02 thanks
Sony adicto I agree. i switched from Canon (40 years a pro SLR and DSLR user) to Sony in January 2017, and happy I did. Coming from Nikon and Canon there is small learning curve but once you set up your menu and custom buttons and functions you can pretty much forget the menu. It is all well worth it for the features and image quality of these cameras. Their menus are bigger because the cameras do more, simple as that. Cheers. BTW I own A6500, A7RIII and new A7III and love them for my professional and personal use.

In the video you skipped the ISO Auto Min SS setting. 3 years ago when I bought the camera and watched this video, this is how I learned the settings. Today I discovered ISO Auto Min. SS setting. You could have saved me this 3 years :D

Even though I just bought myself an A7R II this video was still VERY helpful as A LOT of the menu and settings are VERY similar or even the SAME! This is my first really good camera and my first mirrorless as I had been using my mom's Nikon D90 before this and just recently scraped up enough money to buy myself this new used camera and used lens (both of MPB) and the menu was SUPER initimidating! (An it wasn't even as big as the III).I really appreciate your recommendation on what you changed and what you kept the same so now I'm thinking I'm gonna go back through and re-arrange some things! I super appreciate all of your help with the photography community!

AT 12:50 SWT V/H af area is actually pretty cool. I turn it on and it let's you have independent focus areas for portrait and landscape orientation and it will switch automatically when using flexible spot focus so you don't have to keep joysticking back and forth.
You had a hard job for new beginner who is with Sony. I just got A7C but it's hard to set or use this new one. I learned a lot of this function. Thank you Jared!!
Just purchased a7iii... from Canon 7d to Sony. Picked up Sigma MC-11 converter and can now use Canon/Sigma/Tamron lenses! They are not perfect, some Sony 'features' are not available, but I primarily shot photos and LOVE it. Yes, there are a lot of settings... a lot you can customize... but, I plan on using this camera for many years to come, so I have time!! Plus will probably take a year to pay off! HA Just one more statement... took no time at all to start taking some fun and amazing pics. Low light blows away my 7d... eons ahead... so fun!

Thanks Jared, I could see you were nearly falling asleep due to its simplicity to you but you've helped a lot of people. This is my first camera (with the sigma 24-70mm 2.8 art). I now feel less intimidated by those menus and know where to find things, without reading the manual.
Thank you. I’ve had the A7iii for 6 months.... and I basically just use it on AUTO. But sometimes I hit a brick wall... and the menu system is so comprehensive (and therefore requires a high level of knowledge) that I end up stymied. I absolutely have to learn how to use the A7iii manually. I have to know what I’m doing. (The priority for me is the artistic result, the final photo.... not the tech aspects.... but I really have to know something of what I’m doing for the times I hit the Big Brick Wall). Your video was PERFECT as an introduction. Just PERFECT. Brisk, business-like, focussed.... exactly what I needed. The journey of a 1000 miles... etc, etc. This was my first step. MANY THANKS. Brilliant Video, Ty I think the release without lens is for allowing one to take images when a totally manual lens adaptor is fitted for M42 threaded lens or manual focus nikons etc.
Mine is ordered and I'm excited for my first full frame camera since I shot with 35 mm black and white. The a6000 that I'm currently using, will move to a backup. Thanks for all your videos. You are fun to watch and very informative.
Release without lens is essential when using adaptors that are not transferring EXIF data, ie cheap adaptor or vintage lenses. Most A7iii users will probably only use fully compatible A/F lenses but if you have other-make lenses an adaptor can greatly enhance enjoyment of a mirrorless camera.

Hi Jared. I just want to take the time to thank you for the incredible service that you provide for both amateur and professional photographers. I just recently discovered your TH-cam page. I recently returned from an Alaskan cruise vacation, where I used my Samsung s10+ for video shooting and my daughter's Canon Rebel XS for stills. I didn't realize how generic that camera was until I compared the shots with my cell phone pics. I used to be in the photo game some 30+ film years ago, using Canon AE-1 (which I still have, boxed away somewhere), but I had to get out of the game because I am also a professional musician and couldn't keep up with both "hobbies'. Anyway, after looking at my Rebel XS photos, I've decided I need to invest in a good up to date system and get back into the game. So I've been watching your channel. Probably watched 20 or more videos and now narrowing it down to which camera system I want. Although I really wanted to like and stay with Canon ( the EOS R or RP), this Sony A7 III is probably the one I will go with. It's a little more than I wanted to invest right now, but, I think I won't have to invest in another camera for at least a couple years or more. I won't be shooting professionally. I really appreciate your video reviews. They are very informative, lively, no BS, not pushing one brand over another, simply stating the realistic facts. I just watched a review of this A7 III from another TH-cam channel. It was so dry and dull that if I had seen that TH-cam review first, I may not have bought ANY camera at all! Anyway , thanks a lot. Once I'm back into the game, I'll be sure to invest in some of your videos and photography programs. Thanks. Also: I just read through a couple of comments below. Hey Jared. Solid video on thorough menu descriptions and recommendations. Just got my A7iii and it's a steep learning curve although I've been a Nikon user for many years. It is a complicate menu and your suggestions are greatly appreciated. I just subscribed.
The port next to the USB3 port is actually not a "video" port of sorts but it's labelled (as written next to it!) as "multi" port and yes, it also charges. Which is great as Sony themselves include...yes...an older fashioned micro usb cable to charge the camera.
I actually don't agree with people who say that menu system is complicated. Until I got my A7 III, I thought there are literally hundreds of pages. When I had Nikon D7100, I hated everything about it (including menus and controls) and completely lost my enthuziasm to pick up the camera. Sony, on the other hand, makes me want to shoot whenever I have a spare minute. And it feels like a gadget in a way, which is very appealing to me. My Nikon had to go but Sony definitely stays.
Kearress lol Fuji has a bad menu system too! I owned a X-T2. But better than Nikon. On the plus side, most new cameras have a My Menu or My Favourites shortcut so you don't need to keep diving into the menu! The Sony menu is extensive but logical unlike the Fuji or Nikon menu!

It’s a turn off big time. Ridiculous and unnecessary junk stuff. But... the autofocus options and behaviour of the camera is impressive. The bokeh is nice. The lenses are great. So I will keep it for the time being. I hope it is the camera of my dreams. I played with it last night and the focus system seems very reliable. The menu is a put off though. I’ve left it as you recommended. I’ll just tweek the obvious items. Thanks for this helpful guide! I just couldn’t cope with the Sony menu!
Thanks for this, man. It clears a lot of the physical aspect and interface of the camera . Even, for those of us that don't own it, yet. I've been considering the A7III more seriously, lately. The Fuji X-H1 has failed to convince me..ergonomically.. and Nikon's FF mirrorless is one year away... and we dont know if its gonna feature IBIS.. or even how the body will physically be like. As soon as i can get my hands on one of these.. and get a feel of its ergonomics.. i'll make a decision. The video gives us a better look into what it will be like, using a Sony A7III body. PS: and yes.. hehehe.. it helps ppl that already own it.. too :P The Menus are bad.. but not as BAD.. as they are known to being, imo. And i am not much into Sony, to be honest.
Thanks for the guide. I just bought the A7R III and was lost as to many of the settings and buttons. (My last real camera was an EOS Digital Rebel....so from around 2003...that I quit using when my phone's camera resolution surpassed the DSLR.) Previous to that I had a wonderful Minolta film SLR. This Sony has so many settings and buttons that I just needed a quick guide to jump start just practicing. I appreciate the relatively quick run-through of "getting started" settings and what each button does/can do without too much added or side commentary. Looking forward to the 11 day mini course!

10/14 spot metering point. Sony finally made it possible to meter where your actual focus point is, and not just dead center of the image plane. I bought one just today and it was the first thing I went and turned on. God I missed this feature.

swapped all my canon gear for the A7iii body and got a deal on a 24-105, this vid has been helpful and the menu system is not as daunting as the interweb would have you believe.
16:22 Exposure standard adjustment is useful if you want to always slightly over expose images to get more shadow detail. You can always add black, but you can’t add white.

I shoot a lot with Legacy lenses and this is an important parameter to change....

FYI It is Flexible Spot Medium with the M. There is a S and L option if you go left or right that changes the size of your flexible spot. Great Video!

They are not perfect, some Sony 'features' are not available, but I primarily shot photos and LOVE it. Yes, there are a lot of settings... a lot you can customize... but, I plan on using this camera for many years to come, so I have time!! Plus will probably take a year to pay off! HA Just one more statement... took no time at all to start taking some fun and amazing pics. Low light blows away my 7d... eons ahead... so fun!

Thank you. I’ve had the A7iii for 6 months.... and I basically just use it on AUTO. But sometimes I hit a brick wall... and the menu system is so comprehensive (and therefore requires a high level of knowledge) that I end up stymied.
I absolutely have to learn how to use the A7iii manually. I have to know what I’m doing. (The priority for me is the artistic result, the final photo.... not the tech aspects.... but I really have to know something of what I’m doing for the times I hit the Big Brick Wall).

Brilliant Video, Ty I think the release without lens is for allowing one to take images when a totally manual lens adaptor is fitted for M42 threaded lens or manual focus nikons etc.
Mine is ordered and I'm excited for my first full frame camera since I shot with 35 mm black and white. The a6000 that I'm currently using, will move to a backup. Thanks for all your videos. You are fun to watch and very informative.

Release without lens is essential when using adaptors that are not transferring EXIF data, ie cheap adaptor or vintage lenses. Most A7iii users will probably only use fully compatible A/F lenses but if you have other-make lenses an adaptor can greatly enhance enjoyment of a mirrorless camera.

3 weeks ago I bought me the Sony A7III and I found the manual so boring that I never read it and finally you explained me a bit the camera, thanks for that. But now I need to now how to make real awesome photos.

Hi Jared. I just want to take the time to thank you for the incredible service that you provide for both amateur and professional photographers. I just recently discovered your TH-cam page. I recently returned from an Alaskan cruise vacation, where I used my Samsung s10+ for video shooting and my daughter's Canon Rebel XS for stills. I didn't realize how generic that camera was until I compared the shots with my cell phone pics. I used to be in the photo game some 30+ film years ago, using Canon AE-1 (which I still have, boxed away somewhere), but I had to get out of the game because I am also a professional musician and couldn't keep up with both "hobbies'. Anyway, after looking at my Rebel XS photos, I've decided I need to invest in a good up to date system and get back into the game. So I've been watching your channel. Probably watched 20 or more videos and now narrowing it down to which camera system I want. Although I really wanted to like and stay with Canon ( the EOS R or RP), this Sony A7 III is probably the one I will go with. It's a little more than I wanted to invest right now, but, I think I won't have to invest in another camera for at least a couple years or more. I won't be shooting professionally. I really appreciate your video reviews. They are very informative, lively, no BS, not pushing one brand over another, simply stating the realistic facts. I just watched a review of this A7 III from another TH-cam channel. It was so dry and dull that if I had seen that TH-cam review first, I may not have bought ANY camera at all! Anyway , thanks a lot. Once I'm back into the game, I'll be sure to invest in some of your videos and photography programs. Thanks.
Also: I just read through a couple of comments below. Now I see where that word "haters" comes from. If they could do it better they'd have their own TH-cam channel and wouldn't be depending on your reviews. Geez!

Hey Jared. Solid video on thorough menu descriptions and recommendations. Just got my A7iii and it's a steep learning curve although I've been a Nikon user for many years. It is a complicate menu and your suggestions are greatly appreciated. I just subscribed.
The port next to the USB3 port is actually not a "video" port of sorts but it's labelled (as written next to it!) as "multi" port and yes, it also charges. Which is great as Sony themselves include...yes...an older fashioned micro usb cable to charge the camera.
I actually don't agree with people who say that menu system is complicated. Until I got my A7 III, I thought there are literally hundreds of pages. When I had Nikon D7100, I hated everything about it (including menus and controls) and completely lost my enthuziasm to pick up the camera. Sony, on the other hand, makes me want to shoot whenever I have a spare minute. And it feels like a gadget in a way, which is very appealing to me. My Nikon had to go but Sony definitely stays.
Roman Fierce I agree. Nikon has a garbage menu system. I could never find anything I needed quickly on my D750. The Sony is much easier.
Just try Fuji and you will know what good user interface is...
Kearress lol Fuji has a bad menu system too! I owned a X-T2. But better than Nikon. On the plus side, most new cameras have a My Menu or My Favourites shortcut so you don't need to keep diving into the menu!
The Sony menu is extensive but logical unlike the Fuji or Nikon menu!

Thank you so much Jared! I bought this camera the other day. I’m a Nikon shooter but I’ve heard so much about Sony A7 and the picture quality and the focus system I bought it! I hate the menu! It’s a turn off big time. Ridiculous and unnecessary junk stuff. But... the autofocus options and behaviour of the camera is impressive. The bokeh is nice. The lenses are great. So I will keep it for the time being. I hope it is the camera of my dreams. I played with it last night and the focus system seems very reliable. The menu is a put off though. I’ve left it as you recommended. I’ll just tweek the obvious items. Thanks for this helpful guide! I just couldn’t cope with the Sony menu!

I've been considering the A7III more seriously, lately.
The Fuji X-H1 has failed to convince me..ergonomically.. and Nikon's FF mirrorless is one year away... and we dont know if its gonna feature IBIS.. or even how the body will physically be like.
As soon as i can get my hands on one of these.. and get a feel of its ergonomics.. i'll make a decision.
The video gives us a better look into what it will be like, using a Sony A7III body.
PS: and yes.. hehehe.. it helps ppl that already own it.. too :P
The Menus are bad.. but not as BAD.. as they are known to being, imo. And i am not much into Sony, to be honest.

Thanks for the guide. I just bought the A7R III and was lost as to many of the settings and buttons. (My last real camera was an EOS Digital Rebel....so from around 2003...that I quit using when my phone's camera resolution surpassed the DSLR.) Previous to that I had a wonderful Minolta film SLR. This Sony has so many settings and buttons that I just needed a quick guide to jump start just practicing. I appreciate the relatively quick run-through of "getting started" settings and what each button does/can do without too much added or side commentary. Looking forward to the 11 day mini course!

10/14 spot metering point. Sony finally made it possible to meter where your actual focus point is, and not just dead center of the image plane. I bought one just today and it was the first thing I went and turned on. God I missed this feature.

swapped all my canon gear for the A7iii body and got a deal on a 24-105, this vid has been helpful and the menu system is not as daunting as the interweb would have you believe.
16:22 Exposure standard adjustment is useful if you want to always slightly over expose images to get more shadow detail. You can always add black, but you can’t add white.
