I LOVE your hummus, it's a game changer!!!! I hate the Beyond beef because when I try to cook with it it has such a strong cat food smell and it lingers long after cooking! When I bought a Beyond burger in a restaurant didn't smell bad at all, so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong!
Please, feature your family more, they are so funny! I've only been vegan for 4 months but I have to agree with your parents already, I'll choose a lentil bolognese over beyond beef every time. Plus, they are much more healthy!
I love these types of videos because it proves that you don’t have to be rich to be vegan!! It’s such a false narrative that people pass around-and these videos help break that and show the truth ❤️ love it!
Thank you Natalie! Yes, so many plant based staples like lentils are so affordable, as well as so tasty if you have a few cooking tips up your sleeve. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Yeah it's interesting. Having lived in Asia 10 years and come back to the US 3 years go, what stands out to me is how heavily we productize lifestyles in the US. Being Vegan has almost become a product - or maybe it's associated with expensive products in bougie stores or the special aisles of whole foods. A nation of Indians has a vegan population who never needed "beyond" anything, for example. (for the record, I'm not vegan, but it frustrates me that non-vegans understanding of cooking vegan is influenced so much by what they see in products and marketing).
I ate plain legumes and grains for years. Saved a fortune. Specially cooked recipes taste all the more better when you learn to enjoy plain food for a while
that's so funny because I'm white and I had people that I called aunties and uncles that weren't blood so I guess it doesn't just stop with brown people, stop anti white racism.
Okay no joke, I made this tonight with components from both recipes. One of them being the addition of cashew cream. At the end of the recipe I go to grab the cashew cream from the fridge that I had made that morning. As I am measuring it out I'm wondering why it is so much thicker than it was when I made it in the morning. I figure it must be what it does when refrigerated, so I proceed to add it to the sauce. I mix it in and go to put the the container back in the fridge only to get some "cream" on my finger. I lick it and realize to my heart dropping horror that it was the hummus I had also made that morning. :( so anyways I just continue on, I taste it to see what the hummus did to my poor sauce. To my surprise it was still pretty tasty! Nisha, you have a bullet proof recipe the even when I'm on edibles I can still make a mean bolognese. Thank you!
Okey your comment made me laugh out loud. When I first read that you added hummus to your Bolognese I was like nooooo. But I’m glad it still was tasty 😂
Wonderful - that made me laugh cos I do things like that! Actually I love a dollop of hummus on soups, stews and other hot dishes. It’s very versatile x
I had to go back to watch the ”burn up the van” part, it was hilarious 😂 your parents are so cute! Thank you for this, I am SO trying the first one with the cashew cream but minus the wine, and will use a different pasta. Not a fan of fettuccine either.
I’ve made the lentil bolognese many times since you first shared the recipe with us, and made it for guests twice, and it’s proven to be a true “go to” recipe that is quick, easy, and always delicious. My husband makes the fettuccine from scratch, using good quality semolina wheat, and I had already, on my own, experimented with using Beyond Beef instead of lentils (I cook with Beyond Beef all the time, I usually have a pound or two in the freezer, it’s a direct substitute for most any recipe that calls for ground beef) but, like your parents said, for this recipe the lentils are the right answer. I’m going to try red wine instead of vegetable broth the next time I make it, see how that changes it. Thank you for all the great recipes, and thank you for the wonderfully upbeat and encouraging videos on how to make them. Tomorrow night I’m going to make your tomato and white bean casserole, trying it for the first time.
Hey John! So glad you've been enjoying the lentil bolognese recipe and it's become a go-to for you. I am super impressed your husband makes his own fettuccine! I am sure that takes it over the top. Definitely try adding some red wine before adding the rest of the liquid - it really boosts the flavor!
Any video featuring your parents is a gift to us... their commentary cannot be topped 😂 Also can't wait to try out these recipes! I haven't had bolognese since going vegan 2.5 years ago so I'm eager to make it!
I love everything about this video! Your facial expressions and humor, your cooking tips, your family and family friends! So much wholesome and funny goodness.
I made the pantry one with red wine and omg. It just was so good, gave me so much comfort as a new vegan😍 thank you so much for your recipies ! It’s just amazing
Omg your parents are so adorable!! I live in Italy, and while my bolognese is probably not authentic at all (being from UK and vegetarian), I've been taught to start with soffritto, which is finally chopped onion, carrot and celery. I do feel quite lucky to have fancy pants pasta waaay cheaper here, but honestly I'd swap it for Indian food any day (shhhh!)
@@RainbowPlantLife I am in love wth you!! seriously your channel is sooo inspiring and all your food looks so so delicious thank you for such inspiring recipes all you and Max are very cute and you are super funny too! I made your pb cocoa mix for my toast SOOOOO GOOOOOD xxx
First off... I love the family panel. Your parents are so cute!!! I use the beyond burger meat for Boglanais sauce.(My husband is a meat eater fyi and doesn't even know.) Learned from an Italian women when we lived in Italy for 2 years. She tought me to take canned tomatoes, drain the liquid into a pan and simmer with seasoning, and roast the tomatoes in the oven to carmilize them. OMG !! The umamai overload is huge pay off. She used red wine in the sauce, we were drinking with the meal.
Ooh i love that tip! I’ve done that before for marinara sauce (separate the liquids boil it down, cook with oregano and chili flakes, and then cooked the tomatoes down separately...but never tried roasting the tomatoes). I am so excited to try that!
@@RainbowPlantLife haha exactly! To be honest, when it started, I fast-forwarded the video to the end to see your parents' reactions before watching the recipe. Really enjoy their reactions/comments! :)
I tried out the lentil Bolognese recipe, but I sorta made a hybrid, I added the cashew cream to lentil version, and I didn't have balsamic, so I threw in apple cider instead. Tasted amazing all the same ❤ Thanks for the recipe, simple and scrumdiddlyumptious
Just ordered your instant pot cookbook and received this afternoon. Wow it’s amazing. I’ve been plant Based for over 12 years and you are by far my favorite youtubers. Not putting the other youtubers down but your clarity and ease of your recipes leaves me wanting more. Thank you for all you do and your giving heart. 💗
You can add some fine soya chunks (almost the size of lentils) to get the meaty texture. I usually fry these chunks in a bit of olive oil and a bit of vinegar till it is just about to burn a bit..it gives that smoky/meaty odour/flavor
Your parents are the best! I remember your mom saying "Oh hummus is not my favorite thing"... Loved the honesty. And your dad adding that extra spice... Identifiable!
OMG Nisha, I made this tonight and I bow down to you for such an excellent recipe. I made the first one (without the Beyond meat substitute) and used red wine. Served it over chickpea spaghetti and it was absolutely devine. This will definitely be in my meal rotation from now on. Thank you so much
I just love your panel videos! Your guests were wonderful, and your parents rock! My vegetarian kid does not like "Beyond Meat". She says that as a vegetarian she doesn't want a meat replacement; it goes against the basic principles she's trying to follow. She says she didn't give up meat to try and find meat substitutes. We buy really expensive dried pasta, and use it with homemade Arrabiata from Marcella Hazan.
Your kid is wise beyond her years; it took me years to figure out that meat substitutes usually just end up being as unhealthy as the meat itself anyway. Also not mention making me kind of nauseous how close they taste to real meat (especially beyond meat)
I love when you have your family/friends as the taste tester panel. Great honest reactions and comedic! Thanks for the tips at the end. I'm excited to try this.
Those look really good! The other I made some lentil bolognese pretty similar to yours, but I used canned tomatoes and added some carrots for extra veggies, and a tiny pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg and sugar to cut the acidity. Even my picky vegetarian grandpa loved it! Also you should try making bolognese with TVP, my grandma hydrates the soy in soy sauce first, and then adds a full garlic head to the sauce, it's really amazing!
First time making this tonight, I made a hybrid version between the budget and fancy version, basically added wine and cashew cream to the budget version. OMG outstanding dish loved it!
I love it when you bring your cute little parents in as your taste testers. They make no bones about how they feel about your dishes. It's so fun. You are a great cook. My family gets really excited when I say, "It's a Nisha dish."
When your dad said "burn up the van" I swear I died. He seems like a right class act! Also I just made ur vegan lentil curry with basmati - currently eating :) xxx
i found your lentil bolognese after a google search a little while ago and it’s my favourite dish at the moment i always add some veggies like grated carrot and celery into it as my parents were always trying to get us to eat more veggies when they made a beef bolognese so it reminds me of that and makes it healthier
Your videos are really helpful and I love the taste testers! Any video that features them is a favorite! I took your advice and got the oven thermometer. My oven temp was under by more than 40 degrees at 400!
OK, substitution mania here because I didn't have some ingredients on hand: smashed chickpeas for the lentils and white wine (what???) for the red, and it STILL was amazing!!! I can't wait to make it again. Nisha, you are so wonderful, so creative, and so funny, and I love all your recipes and your videos. Congratulations on your fabulous work.
Tried the red lentil version. I was very sceptical about the walnuts but I like experimenting so I gave it a shot. It is AMAZING! Thank you so much for this! This is by far the best meat free bolognese recipe - and I've tried a few, even with meat replacement, crumbled tofu etc. This one is delicious! I can recommend it to everybody :)
This was so wonderful and wholesome watching your family's commentary. I have been on and off veggie for over a decade and also have a lot of veg friends. The friends that have been consistently plant-based for a long time all dont like the Beyond and Impossible meat substitutes, but it is great for someone like me who generally wants to eat more plant-based foods. I think it's a great 'transition' food or good to serve with a mixed group with some veg and some carnies
As a recent vegan convert (previously vegetarian), your videos are very helpful and educational. Recipes are presented clearly, with humor and stories. What’s not to love? My very favorite thing in your videos is YOUR PARENTS! They are adorable!
Great video- really enjoyed comparison, and will need to try both! Here's a little trick for opening wine. Firmly grasp the foil at the top, twist and pull. It will come right off, and then the cork will come out cleanly no matter what your decorating method is. Easy and elegant.
Love how you defined & explained both recipes ! Well, the best is the test taste !!!! Your parents are awesome and having sense of humor . Enjoy watching them 😍 how lucky you are for having them with you 🤗🤩💖💝
Trader Joe's has a fantastic organic red wine blend (Shaw) for $3.99. It's usually my go-to for weekday pasta dinners, but I somehow never thought to cook with it, so thank you for the inspiration! I adore your channel, thanks for all the content you put out there!
Hahahaha! I relate to that. I think that’s every Gujarati mom. 😂 All Italian pasta is too bland for them. We usually add what’s called the garlic dude dust from Gilroy to all pasta dishes and only then it’s edible.
Great video as always thanks. I love it when your family come on, so funny!! A great way to get cashew cream to taste even more like sour cream is to use a mixture of lemon and lime juice, so good. Your lentil version looks delish. x
Thanks Debbie, glad you enjoyed my family! I'm intrigued by the mixture of lime juice. I've used lime juice in cashew cream before but only when making a flavored one (like lime-cilantro-jalapeno). I am excited to try out your suggestion!
Omg your family is amazing and your dad is hilarious. I can't wait to try the lentil bolognese! I will probably add some wine too since my mom has always made bolognese with red wine and it adds a lot of flavor. Thanks Nisha! Love your videos :)
Your family cracks me up so much!! I love these types of videos. I think I'll use your lentil bolognese recipe to make lasagna tomorrow it looks super delicious 😍
I am not a vegan nor a vegetarian but I do take regular breaks from eating meat. So I’m definitely gonna try the lentil sauce! Looks delicious. Thanks!!
It's okay if you don't go fully vegetarian or vegan - if everyone just did meatless mondays, it would help a lot. Remember that the goal is reduction if you can 💛
I was taught to 'desour' tinned tomato paste by scraping the middle of the pan clear and frying it of there, with a small sprinkle of fine sugar. That gets rid of the 'tin' taste. I will definitely give this a go, with the sofrito suggestion, the wine (obviously!), and the cashew cream. I might even add a few coarsely chopped sun-dried tomatoes.
Hi Rainbow - I have cooked this recipe in several different ways now and the hybrid, no meaty stuff, recipe is the beast, I mean the best, no BEAST. Delisioso. One point - i cannot stand adding cream/milk/cashew to the dish (as the so-called traditional method) .It is meant to make it rich and creamy but , to me, makes it slimy. This is worse if you gave up milk because of this slimy feel. May I suggest adding a slack handful of soaked and finely chopped Italian dried mushrooms instead? This boosts the umami and enriches the meal to Michelin Star level. Mille grazie.
Your bolognese recipe was my first attempt with red lentils. They definitely cook differently than other lentils but produced a much creamier texture. Family loved it! I’m eager to try it with the red wine to deglaze. As always, “Thank you” for your posts as they’ve made my vegan lifestyle so much more tasty! 😋
I lOVE this video of you and your family! I made and enjoyed the '10 ingredient Bolognese recipe' from the web site this evening. It was good and my only add would be mushrooms the next time that I try it. The wine deglazing was a must. Also, be sure that the lentils are really well cooked. A really enjoyable recipe thank you!
We have beyond meat burgers in South Africa but sadly I haven't seen the mince from them yet! I don't know if crumbling up the patties would work as a substitute for the beyond mince itself but your recipe honestly sounds lovely - both do! Thank you for always providing such hearty and fulfilling meals that don't have animal products or meat in them. Sometimes I run out of ideas and just run back to my tofu dishes
THANK YOU. I love your videos. I know this might sound weird but you make me smile and feel better about life, while teaching me how to eat healthier. Thanks for the fun positive attitude. You should have your own tv show. You are just as good if not better then the cooks on the food network. I am going to town tomorrow to get ingredients. Again thank you and all your family for sharing this recipe.
I made the first recipe today (with the wine) and ohhhhmyyyyyyyygooooooooodddd it's one of the best things I have ever cooked. I used to love bolognese before I went vegan 4 years ago and this was better than I'd ever remembered!!! thank you so much! I will say it took waaay longer than I was expecting but it was so worth it
Nisha, are you planning on doing a spring/summer meal prep video? I love your style of meal prepping with limited ingredients, but showing the different meals you can make!
Your version looks really yummy and I can't wait to try it out!! Thank you for the information on tomatoes paste...I had no idea the tube was better for flavor!! Love your recipes so much!!!
Thanks, Laura! I'm glad you are excited to try it out! If the recipe requires just a small amount of tomato paste, I don't think it makes a noticeable difference, but it certainly does when you use a lot of it.
"I'm not gonna touch no vegan food.." Omg your parents are hilarious!! I'm loving this format of a panel taste testing two versions of a dish and looking forward to more. Also wishing I'd watched this before I made the lentil bolognese pasta yesterday - though I did deglaze the pan (and burn up the van LOL) with wine. Gonna try this recipe again until I get it to look as dreamy as in this video :)
Very good, great work, both look very tasty! I would recommend starting with a sort of sofrito as the base of the sauce - so diced onion, celery, carrot and in bolognese I go with mushrooms too to bring a nice earthiness. Gives the sauce a load more flavour than just onions and a good way to up the veg content too. You can often find a frozen sofrito mix in the supermarket for a pound or two - really worth keeping a bag in the freezer!
Loved this! I was rooting for the lentil version and glad to know it won out with your adorable panel. Did you find an assistant yet?!? I live in Philly, but think we should cook together!!
So much goodness in one video! Thank you for sharing your yummy recipes, your funny family + friends, and even your kitchen mistakes (because now I won't feel like such a goof when I make my own).
Thank you for being willing to experiment on camera. I can’t wait to give the lentil bolognese a try. And like the rest of our community, I’m loving your panel and the taste test. Completely unrelated but I would love it if you could do a video showing how to make a large amount of aquafaba, perhaps in the instant pot. I have been baking your banana bread like mad and can’t eat enough chickpeas to keep up!
A note to people with sulfite sensitivity or allergy: citric acid is often made using sulfites as a cleaning agent; Beyond Beef contains potato starch which is also processed using sulfites to prevent oxidation on the potatoes; and of course red wine is full of sulfites (yes, even the « no sulfites added » type). For these reasons I will not be trying the fancier version of this recipe. However I am looking forward to the lentil based one, it’s on my menu list for this week. Thank you for sharing all your experiments.
I tried just a lentil-tomato-sauce bolognese-style sauce once before - it is seriously amazing (especially with Greek-style rice noodles), excited to try this one as well.
I absolutely Love your recipes and videos! This one was another great one! I was so curious who would win the challenge...Brava' Lentils with of course a nice Vegan wine for deglazing and good pasta. Thank you to you and your Awesome parents who raised a Beautiful, Smart & Funny daughter :-))))

Both look great but I would use a soffito (carrot celery onion) to make it that closer to traditional. Definitely would go the lentil one !
Your videos are really helpful and I love the taste testers! Any video that features them is a favorite! I took your advice and got the oven thermometer. My oven temp was under by more than 40 degrees at 400!
Glad to hear that you enjoy the videos and the taste testers, Jeff! And yes, oven thermometer can be so helpful!
Loving the family love! I especially like it when you giggle at your Father's comments. Precious.
Outstanding quality video. Really good production work. Top tier editing. The host is the best part of the show.
I did the budget one and also added mushroom for texture it was yum
me too!! i added mushrooms too and it was GREAT.
These videos with your family are some of my favorite. Thank you for sharing them with us!
So happy you do, Marie! Have a great weekend!
Love the panel! Would love more videos like this
Glad to hear that! You can also find the panel in my recent brownies and hummus video :)
I make your lentil curry twice a week now usually and i still cant have enough from it!!!! So good
I love that you added recommendations at the end so we can incorporate a bit of each recipe, can't wait to try it!
Whoa that first recipe is almost exactly how I make my bolognese too, but I also add a piece of dark chocolate to the sauce. Love it!
"I'm not a pasta person" HAHAHAHA AUNTY IS KILLER
haha it's true! if it doesn't have spice, she's not into it 😂
Hahahaha! I relate to that. I think that’s every Gujarati mom. 😂 All Italian pasta is too bland for them. We usually add what’s called the garlic dude dust from Gilroy to all pasta dishes and only then it’s edible.
I just made the lentil version. I’m actually eating it as I write this. It is incredible!
same
Great video as always thanks.
Your dad is hilarious! I see where you get your sense of humor from. Love this video.
Tried the lentil bolognese, it was AMAZING 10/10, thank you so much!!!! ❤️
I just cooked this.. I can only say this: The best pasta that I have ever tasted in my whole life WOW! Thanks fo much!!! Nisha !!!!
Also your family and friends are so sweet, it's awesome to see them try your cooking
Your parents are so sweet! Loved seeing them involved 🥰
Just made the cheap version and oh my gosh it is delicious. I had to use canned tomato paste because needed low sodium. It was still awesome.
Bolognese is one of our favorites! So happy we can continue to eat a vegan version. We use the tube tomato paste as well.
Your parents are awesome. They remind me of my folks. Love your channel ❤ 💕
Your dad is precious. He just says ‘but behind her back’ that was it for me
Very good, great work, both look very tasty!
I live in Philly, but think we should cook together!!
i love your taste testers so much!
aww thanks Emily!
This is the third video I've watched featuring your family and I love them!!
So much goodness in one video! Thank you for sharing your yummy recipes, your funny family + friends, and even your kitchen mistakes (because now I won't feel like such a goof when I make my own).
Your videos are so great, have so much value, and probably take so much work... I hope you earn a ton of $$$ because it is so well deserved!!
OMG! I love your parents! They are so sweet and so cute! Family is such a blessing.
Trying out this pasta tonight so lets hope mine turns out just as delicious. Pretty basic version but I'm excited
“Don’t take that in the movie”😭 I love your mom she’s so cute
A note to people with sulfite sensitivity or allergy: citric acid is often made using sulfites as a cleaning agent; Beyond Beef contains potato starch which is also processed using sulfites to prevent oxidation on the potatoes; and of course red wine is full of sulfites (yes, even the « no sulfites added » type). For these reasons I will not be trying the fancier version of this recipe. However I am looking forward to the lentil based one, it’s on my menu list for this week. Thank you for sharing all your experiments.
I would enjoy all your dishes. Thank you for sharing your gifts. Love your talking.
I tried just a lentil-tomato-sauce bolognese-style sauce once before - it is seriously amazing (especially with Greek-style rice noodles), excited to try this one as well.
I love that you shared your family and friends..
Wow I really really want to try the cheap version! And really like that you guys compared them and told us how to improve the cheap version.
This veggie Bolognese is one of your finest recipes.
This is so amazing, I made this today and I was floored by the final dish! Mahalo Plenty!!!!
I love your channel I'm gonna try the recipes now thanks so much ☺️
Why do I love these taste test videos??? Your parents are so adorable!!!🥰🥰🥰
Your Dad steals the show! We love your videos. Thanks for the great recipes. Fun and informative.
