Thanks for the video. Will be interesting to see how you get on.
I have 3 Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' I bought in 2022, that I overwintered at work in a sunny stairwell. It does get chilly at night but probably never as low as 5C. They never went dormant, just slowed right down. I avoided watering as often, as they weren't growing as fast, but I noticed that like yours, the leaves that did grow were long and thin compared to those that grew in the summer.
Once the weatger had warmed uo again, they were still alive, had been getting more light every day, with roots, growing faster again... they were definitely looking desperate to be back outside.
The best part was they looked good from day 1. As soon as they looked settled in and growth was strong, I cut back some older leaves hoping more nutrients went to new growth.
While 2 remained in pots and grew moderately, one went into the ground in a sunny spot and grew rapidly, with the new leaves being longer and much wider, with lots of colour. Apart from more nutrients I also think the one in the ground had more consistent water... the potted ones dried out fast.
So I am overwintering them at work again this year, and they will all be in the gound prooerly as soon as it is frost free again this year. I believe as long as they aren't too big to bring indoors, this is a better option than dry storage for me. I can't wait to see how big they can get this year- really spectalur plants for an exotic jungly feel.
I hope yours do well and get massive this year 🙂

I am sure that the bigger one will be okay the other I need to see, in February I'll plant the ones I have in the basement to give them a kick start, If they have survived that is 🙂and depending on how they are all doing, i might split one of them by the end of the year, we'll see

Hi Wanda I hope the surgery went well. They would not have survived outside, Winter here has been a bit of everything from Snow to floods and we had ice rain this morning, which made driving such a joy 🙂

We have six in the house, some are doing better than yours, some way worse. It's very hit and miss but as long as they see it through to summer who cares right 👍

Absolutely, I hope that they are going to make it, I am not worried about the bigger one, but the other well we need to see.

    Hallo Jochen,

My banana doesn't seem to be doing as well as yours. Very tall and quite a skinny trunk. Do you call it that?? Dare I say...no girth. Huge fricken leaves but they keep dying off and haven't seen a new leaf in weeks. I've had to prop it up against another tree on the corner. I think she may be a goner before I can get it outside. Time will tell.

Girth is a issue my Banana is not as thin as I want it to be either, but it really shoots one leaf after the other however I do feed them each week, which I usually don't but I thought they are not getting enough sun so the least thing I can do for them. However as you saw one looks a little shit and I think it has some freakish disease so let's see

I hope yours stay alive long enough to make it into the garden again. I definitely noticed that being in soil vs being in pots made a huge difference to how thick the pseudostems grew last year.
They barely grew during the winter and the leaves did get look a bit unwell, especially ones that were nearer a window where they got more light but were maybe colder at night. However, I think it may still have been a better choice than storing them completely dormant, simply because they kept their roots. But I'm no expert - just learning as I go.
I will definitely get all of mine into soil this year and will buy much bigger pots for overwintering at the end of autumn to try and keep as much of the roots as I can... it's not what most experts I've seen recommend but I think its worth experimenting if it means they might get off to a faster start. 🙂

@@damianeadie510 just like you I am no expert, I just learn by doing, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. this is the first time I took in my banana, however i also have been feeding them, a little but some anyway, I do let them dry out between watering. I am going to continue what I have been doing with the big one the little one i am changing it up and see what happens. fingers crossed
