Yes Corm is correct ;) These guys i find grow best in partial shade. My full sun ones are always short but my partial shade ones grow 8-10ft and keep up with my Musa.

Thanks for letting me know what to do. I just got my first one this year and wasn't sure what to do when winter gets close here in mid Missouri. It's doing great. Most of the outdoor plants here do very well because the high humidity that makes it so hot and miserable for me, does wonders for most of my plants. Thanks , again!!

I find that they grow better in the ground... but if you have a massive pot it shouldn't matter... if the roots are too constricted the plant slows down...

as long as it doesn't freeze it might be ok... that's something I want to experiment with myself. tropical bananas tend to show signs of cold damage when the temps go below 10c or 50f ... usually my garage stays above 5c... it would be interesting

These plants grow better in the ground... but a Large pot works good too... I find that they grow a little slower in a pot... dig them up when the temps start dipping below 50F .... not sure when that will happen in your area... when the temps drop the growth slows... and below 50F it will start getting black spots.
I'm a Texan, and--last winter being the exception--there are LOTS of people who over-winter them in the ground. Cut the leaves off (as in this video), wrap it in a layer of burlap, then wrap Christmas lights around the trunk, followed by a layer of insulation. They successfully survive the winter in ground this way. I have a friend north of Salt Lake City who has huge palm trees in his yard that manages to overwinter them successfully up there in the land of ice and snow by the same method.

You make it look easy. It takes a lot of ambition to winter non-hardy plants every year. That knife was either really sharp or the leaves were as soft as they looked.

Hi great video. I have one of these plants and I live in the UK so the temperature is probably cooler than where you are! I've had my plant for a couple of years and then this year I heard you could put it outside. It has done really well. The temperature outside especially in the evening is starting to get quite a bit cooler 10° - 7°. I am going to do what you just said and I will definitely not water it in storage. What kind of soil do you use for the storage. I don't have a basement but I have a garage that has some light. It can get quite cold in there indoors but guess the temperature can reach 3 degrees do you think I should find somewhere warmer? Thanks

Hi Bill, This is the first year I dont need to buy new bananas. I dug 3 of them out last fall and i have just replanted them back outside. My question, I have one that is about 5ft tall I cut all of the side leafs off last fall. Since I cut them off I am guessing about 4 ft high or so will be nothing but a stalk ? Should I cut the plant down maybe to 2 feet or so so it will look better?? If so, Should I wait until it gets growing good ? Thanks
+ToddLB4567 great question... and you're right... that will be bare stock... this is a personal interest thing... if you want height don't cut it back... eventually it will sucker and will fill in the space if it's a musa... Ensete does not sucker are readily. If you want a shorter more full looking plant chopping it back after it starts to take hold is an option as well.... I personally like the "trunk and height"

I'm in zone 6b... I think you're much warmer and might not have to do much at all... winters here can get severe with occasional temps getting down into the -30's C.

I give might light but I have friend that give them no light... if there is no light... make sure that you don't water. Because the plant will not be photosynthesizing it wont require much moisture. when I have mine in the grow space I really decrease the watering to when the soil is Completely dry... too much water and you risk having them rot. Since they are fast growers maybe 2 months after the leaves start to grow.. start them in pots so the soil temps stays warm... that will help... then plant them out ... I have just put mine in pots... and am sliding them outside on the warm days

+PlantzNThings I watched the entire series of your Ensete division, in fact, I cut mine down yesterday, digging it out today and trying it myself. My only problem is that the base of my 1-year old ensete is about 12" wide. Depending on the pot size I may not have room for all 4 quarters. If I remember correctly, the pups only grew on the cut side of the quarter so I will not center mine in the pot. Hopefully I'll get away with 10" pots and will be able to use all 4 quarters.

If I could control my temp i would have the area where the dormant plants are stored between 10-15 degrees Celsius

it should be fine in the pot as long as the garage stays above freezing.. and the pot stays pretty dry... too much moisture will cause rot

as long as the temps don't go below 5-10 C ... i don't see why not... many people seem to be able to store these dormant... I have yet to try

My only problem is that the base of my 1-year old ensete is about 12" wide. Depending on the pot size I may not have room for all 4 quarters. If I remember correctly, the pups only grew on the cut side of the quarter so I will not center mine in the pot. Hopefully I'll get away with 10" pots and will be able to use all 4 quarters.

Ensete bananas typically don't produce offsets... that being said... you can propagate them using corm division.
@@PlantzNThings first of all thank you for the response.. so if I'm understanding right it will produce pups and once it produces pups you can go ahead and cut them away like a regular banana plant. ?? Am I correct in this ??
