Hey Mark, mooie review.

    Great review!
Thankfully, Framework addressed most of the issues you pointed out: A more sturdy hinge, a more robust top shell, a matte screen and a denser battery. The best thing is that all of these ate available on their website as parts so you can replace them on your current laptop (no need to buy a new model).
That's what I love about Framework!

There is a 4.0kg hinge version to buy from framework which increases the force to keep the lid angle stationary on the go and in bumpier environments, but trading off the easy one-hand-opening.

And there is more rigid Top Cover available to buy from Framework.

It should be noted that I used only one of the new hinges... it helps.

It's awesome that most weaknesses mentioned can be fixed by replacement parts now. I know there are better and cheaper options out there but I'll definitely get a Framework laptop because it's good enough and I want to support it.

    Thanks for this review.
I have never seen/noticed a timeout for keyboard backlights until I noticed it on my Lenovo Flex. I didn't notice it until over a year had passed because I don't use them that much, but when I did notice it, it was VERY frustrating. I can say that when I want the backlight on, it is SUPER annoying having it turn off automatically (auto time-out). I don't use my laptop in the dark that much but when I do, I want to be able to see which key i'm hitting BEFORE I hit it. If I'm watching a movie, I just turn it off as that is very easy to do. If I'm using it, I want to be in control of it, not some engineer who isn't there and doesn't know my use case. Without the ability to turn off the auto time-out like it is on the Lenovo, this is just a horrible feature. The ideal would be for a laptop manufacturer to create the option and give the option to the user to adjust (auto on/off, delay time, etc). Just my two cents worth.
    Thanks again!

I rather the keyboard not dim by itself. You can dim it if you're watching a movie of you want, it's over an hour entertainment and 2 seconds activity to dim it. Meanwhile if it always does the dimming it would get on my nerves. Plus the arrow keys... That's the worst way to make them. You use up and down much more than left and right, yet they're the smallest. Thankfully I'm getting the 16 with the all rgb keys and macro pad

Great video! It's unfortunate but I feel that nobody can compete with Apple right now in the laptop market from a raw hardware perspective. I love the ideology behind the Framework but I can't afford to drop a grand on something that isn't the best I can buy for the price, and the battery life issues with seemingly all other laptops really sour things even more. Lets hope Framework can change that in the coming years!

As long as Apple does not take repair seriously, they are part of the problem, not the solution. They are the most active actor hindering the right to repair. We can't continue like this. I love how long an Apple device is useful, and they keep their value because of it. I hate the fact that simple repairs are costly and can only be done by Apple. There is only one reason to do this: stock price.

I’m in the same boat as you. I love the idea of Frame work and would like to get one… but Apple Silicon looks to be too impressive for the cost.
Even if the performance was good in this, it’s thermal management is not.

Depends on what you need. Ultrabook? Definitely. Workstation? Only if you need MacOS exclusive software. Their price per performance ratio is laughable.

@@SuperSybre I am with you here, but I understand him. Most people can rock a ThinkPad for 10 plus years without issue, perhaps upgrade the ram and SSD, that would give them another 3 to five years, until the screen fails and it is time to go.
For me, however, most of the time, laptops are decommissioned because I need more juice and better performance. And there is just not much I can do with the old laptop.
I know, I can still use the SSD, HDD, but not always the ram because usually the frequency is lower and would not be ideal for a newer CPU.
It would be a shame to throw the rest away because the screens, speakers, keyboards are still good. I just feel like I am committing a crime here. So I just sell them to my friends who need it for a happy meal.
I know there are cheaper options with the same performance, but it is not always about money. It is about recycling. I am willing to pay a premium for that.

Since the age of the Ultrabook began, I have not seen a single laptop where the keys don't come into contact with the screen when it's closed. Not from Apple, or Dell, or Asus, or even the obscure GPD Win max that I'm currently using. It is singly the most annoying thing about this age, but at this point I kind of accept it's par for the course. I feel like matte screens are worse for clarity, but better for smudging-- it's a tough sell.

The trackpad can be great. But I noticed after opening up a couple of times, a tiny misalignment makes the touchpad feel weird. Correctly aligning is hard and the whole thing is very sensitive.

Where is the hardware from? Is it Chinese build? The repair'ability' is nice, but with what kind of components? I would like to replace my hardware with 'Made in Europe' counterparts.

You're not going to be able to find anything. Let's just look at the CPU alone. There are two general types of CPUs in consumer-grade devices. x86 and ARM. ARM is present in things like phones, tablets, and other embedded use cases. Technically Mac computers are now on ARM as well with the M1/M2 chips. But they're basically a weird case on their own, so we'll ignore them.
x86 is the architecture used in PCs. Desktops and Laptops without fail, aside from Mac because they do their own thing, use x86. x86 CPUs are made by two companies. Intel and AMD. Currently Framework laptops only offer Intel CPUs. Now, technically Intel has a wafer fabrication plant in Ireland, and no assembly plants anywhere in Europe as far as I found. As far as I'm aware, you won't be able to find which plants your CPU was fabricated or assembled in, so you won't be able to know if it was fabricated in the Ireland plant, and it definitely wasn't assembled in Europe. AMD CPUs are made in Taiwan, so don't think you can find a European-made CPU there.
Basically, you're not going to be able to find a European-made CPU. Now expand to the other components in the computer, and you'll find similar stories throughout any desktop/laptop you look at.

@@emilymarriott5927 thanks for elaborating on this topic. Let's change the settings a little bit. 'is it possible to build a PC without 'Made in PRC (China)' parts in it? I would love to see a European brand, but if there is non of the latter it's a pity.
