Really great content and of all the companies Linus could support this one is an absolute no brainer. The conflict of intrest issues were covered well and I think LTT has enough consumer trust to deal with that. Weeell, okay, playing Devil's Advocate: Linus becoming a shareholder for Framework doesn't BY ITSELF mean he's "backing Right to Repair", it means he's funding a company with a Right to Repair ethic. And that's fine, there's nothing wrong with that, but again, BY ITSELF, it's a capitalistic way of solving things. Actually backing Right to Repair means lobbying legislators to enshrine a _Right_ to Repair. EDIT: Huh, so apparently despite the _two_ fully capitalised "BY ITSELF"s, people still think I'm saying Linus has never ever supported Right to Repair in any other way. Don't know what to say, are people just trying to get offended?
@@lodgin The capitalistic way of solving things is almost always the best way of solving things. Legislation requires enforcement and controls and therefore costs money and will make always some people unhappy.
I was ready to buy one today after seeing Louis Rossmann's vid on this but I prefer a 15" screen and I have to have a discrete graphics card as I use it for video editing. As soon as you guys make that happen count me in. I've repaired thousands of PC's and laptops in my day and this move to fully integrated, disposable systems is one of the worst trends I've ever seen and it's time for it to come to an end.
With you there on the screen - I have a beefy desktop for graphics, video, etc. that I can access with Parsec if I need the power, but I really want a lightweight Linux machine with a large 1440p screen and outstanding battery life for writing code on the go, but they are surprisingly hard to find.
@@nathanupchurch7549 Have you looked at Chromebooks? I've rooted a lot of those to linux and they have amazing battery life. The Google Pixelbook has a very high res screenbut it's not that big. There has to be someone that did a high res 15" screen you could do something with.
I'm fine with 13" screens but need 2in1 functionality and a touch screen. But I'm very hopeful that the framework team will eventually produce those options.

I really admire Linus quite a bit. He has taken a passion for technology and entertainment and turned it into good paying jobs for 30+ people and financial stability for himself and his family. Now he is using his wealth to invest in a company he believes in. He has surrounded himself with a talented team and they consistently produce quality content that is always entertaining and informative.

I don't think its that they don't care. I think its more that their business model is based on planned obsolescence. They want you to replace your machine instead of repairing or upgrading it.
@@ashanarchy7255 I’m not even sure about that-most people own laptops for around 5 years, which to me goes well beyond the time frame of planned obsolescence. It’s IMO more to do with economies of scale- it’s probably a lot easier to mass produce a laptop that has 6 possible variants than one that could have dozens.
I agree. I was very much concerned about the profitability and sustainability of framework, not a very profitable business model to survive. The push from Linus will definitely change the situation. Businesses are black boxes that money just disappears into, and stuff sometimes comes back out. So, Linus takes the time to explain it in detail for those who simply aren't going to understand what he's talking about. ... There's also the legal component. He needs to spell out in detail exactly what he's doing, so there's no ambiguity which could be abused in any potential lawsuits. A bit of public CYA, if you will.

A person talking about how they are so impressed with a product that they bought a part of the company is pretty common, but I guess it's better than flogging a product without disclosing their business dealings with the company. It's just not refreshing.

Ethical would be to not invest. There are no ethical codes that talk about how to handle conflicts of interest you have purposely embraced short of to say you should get out of them quickly. Disclosure is for people that have found themselves in an unintentional conflict of interest (realizing that a relative is in your direct reporting chain at work), and industries where it's economically unavoidable and the risk is low (real estate agencies, large organizations that have firewalls in place to mitigate the COI).
I bought one and it's very nice. They made some design choices that I would have done differently, but in terms of construction, it's really nice. No complaints at all. I'm thrilled this company came along.

Wow this video does such a good job of showing how much work and money goes into running a physical product business. It's all of the same stuff I've dealt with when running my own store.
Even companies that are solo self employed, and non-product selling (services etcetc) there is a lot of overhead, maintenance of tools, etc. Might be some difference in profit at the end, but thats always more of a country to country (an state to state) difference. LTT did a good job with explanation :)
Kinda reminds me of gaming companies that mostly doesnt need to deal with all that anymore and still wanna make games more expensive., but that's another question entirely.
@@DPedroBoh They still have to deal with cuts from their publisher, the platform they are selling on, refunds, oh, and the big one - taxes. But the actual reason they keep trying to increase their profit margin so bad is that their investors don't want to see sustainable profit, they want to see growth. It's the reason why if a sequel to a game makes the same amount as its prequel, it's seen as a failure despite being profitable. It's also the reason why Nintendo's Super Mario Run was seen as a failure, despite also being profitable. I've mostly stopped playing AAA games in favor in indie titles as those are still developed and managed by passionate people.

because its pointless (have always been the downfall with modular gadgets) Noone is gonna change ports over and over again and if the laptop breaks majority would buy a new laptop simply because they wants something new. Even if they released greatly improved components majority of people would not go and buy the upgrade kit instead keep the laptop as it is and give it to someone who needs it then buy a new one. What the market needs is companies who dont try to make it hard to repair their products and provide the parts required. not modularity. With that said its a wonderful product and they got the repair ability but the market is not asking for modular laptops
Same thing for phones vis-a-vis Fairphone. Samsung or Apple could make a repairable phone that doesn't rely on exploitation and that's more refined and cheaper than a Fairphone, they just don't want to.

If there's one thing I've learned over my years of watching LTT it's that Linus is, at the core, a hardware nerd. Therefore I both understand the wish to invest in Framework and that even with that, he'd still be excited about cool laptops from other manufacturers. Framework succeeding means those other manufacturers at least taking a look at making their devices more modular and perhaps laptops might get some sort of modular standard just like the ATX standard which helped make the PC the dominant computer it is today.
As loudly as I am rooting for the repair movement (and as a tinkerer myself), I can not unsee the industry moving towards more specialized, efficient hardware that is joined in SoCs, like Apple's, backed up by the cloud backbone. I want to be able to change my own screen and battery but the computing modules are gaining more diversity in function, yet are joined in a single chip for efficiency. With the energy crisis not going away anytime soon, I can see many of us switching from our energy hungry desktops to the more efficient laptops, yet demanding the ability to customize and expand. Of course I'm sure Linus made its due diligence, but, damn these are exciting times 😯😯😯.
This is so hard to find in mainstream media. Honest, transparent, direct. Could you please have them ship to LATAM as soon as possible? I´d love to buy this and just upgrade it for years on end.
I really love that Linus so passionately uses his audience and financial resources to help grow a company that is literally built around right to repair!
Or, he is lying and just taking advantage of amateur engineers that don't understand anything about software support. The company will go under in a year or less, linus will own some of their patents, and sell them for more than he went in for. It's a classic move by unethical business investors that take advantage of moronic engineers.
If there was ever a product I wanted to see you invest in, it was this one. Hopefully with LTTs support, this product can breakthrough where others have failed.

The amount of confidence the Framework team has overall is astounding. These people definitely are not afraid and the publicity they're receiving from their fresh ideas I'm positive are doing nothing but increasing their confidence moving forward. I'm amped to see what they have planned for the future, and I can totally see myself buying a laptop from them whenever I decide to retire my MacBook.
I really love how honest and transparent Linus runs LTT he is always up and front about the business. He keeps a good balance of “yeah we are a company” and “intimate persona”
Oh wow. Those closing remarks gave me goosebumps. "If Framework reneges on the promise they made to me, my break up with them will be swift, absolute, and in public." My man. I'm fully behind this. Looks like my next laptop might be a Framework.
Seeing Linus give his full support to a brand like this I feel really gives the tech community a lot of confidence in Framework. I can't think of another youtuber/influencer whose opinion on tech I respect more, nor one that has been so transparent to the fanbase. I can't wait to get my hands on one of these computers in the near future, hopefully there's an AMD variant at that time.
Agreed, on both fronts, AMD have somewhat earned my respect and trust with the work they have being doing on AMDGPU opensource graphics stuff, and make better processors across the board for all things than the (X86 based) competition now (especially on power draw to performance, which matters in a laptop) and while I don't always agree with him/his team/ their video choices damn if they don't do a good job of telling it how it really is most of the time. I'm also hoping him/ his team do their magic on a 'MNT Reform' a similar repairable premium laptop concept, but with opensource being the priority over outright performance, on paper its somewhere around a Pi3-Pi4, which is great for lots of tasks, maybe even everything you do that isn't gaming in theory at least - plus it has a trackball (and I like a good trackball)... If/When I actually need to replace my now stupidly old Toughbooks it will be with this Framework or the MNT device as it stands...
Just placed my order, viewed your review several months ago and love the idea of being able to easily repair and replace components and hope the company all the success in the world.
A small advise, I was looking at the website and it said my region (Germany) was not available yet. I can't stretch this enough but framework should look into selling in this market as soon as possible. Barring other issues Germany (and the DACH-region as a whole), has a huge diy market and is extremely environmentally conscious and something like the Framework notebooks are definitely needed here.
Yuup. Went on their website to look at it, but they don't have a german keyboard layout atm. But I'm so looking forward to their products in the future and would love to buy one, if it fits my needs.
I wish i could say the same about Denmark and the rest of Scandinavia, but people here are too infatuated with their Macbooks, for a DIY centered laptop to take hold :(
This transparency just gained LTT like a million respect points from me. All youtube companies should be this honest.

@@DemonKyle that's actually completely fair, I hadn't considered that
Linus backing this company is literally giving a huge monetary support to Right to Repair, indirectly. And that, I do support.
Arguably even more important is the industry support, hopefully getting them more inroads with manufacturers, which I assume is exponentially more important for a modular system like frameworks'
Really great content and of all the companies Linus could support this one is an absolute no brainer. The conflict of intrest issues were covered well and I think LTT has enough consumer trust to deal with that. I rarely use laptops except from my company so I wont be jumping on this product but I can see a ton of appeal. Ironic that ifixit is the sponsor but this is the one piece of modern electronics that really doesn't need their kits.

I was ready to buy one today after seeing Louis Rossmann's vid on this but I prefer a 15" screen and I have to have a discrete graphics card as I use it for video editing. As soon as you guys make that happen count me in. I've repaired thousands of PC's and laptops in my day and this move to fully integrated, disposable systems is one of the worst trends I've ever seen and it's time for it to come to an end.

@@dailyshadow I feel like thats due to Framework prioritizing the repairability part of making a laptop rather the spending that R&D money on performance. They both have their values and here's hoping Frameworks laptops will be powerful enough that most people are happy to use it from watching TH-cam videos to using cpu-intensive applications.
Even if the framework surpasses the Mac book in performance in every metric, the Mac book still has the vendor lock in of the Mac Ecosystem.

Besides, Apple has its own ecosystem that not just makes all apple devices work well with each other, but also makes working with any other system practically a nightmare.
The honesty in this video was astonishing, I remember listening to your thoughts a few WAN shows ago and I didn't expect you to go through with it. This is awesome, Linus.
What did he say
he needs stickers, linus branded old laptop tech....
what wan show was that? i thought i listened to all the most recent but i don’t remember them discussing that.
I actually really appreciate Linus giving us the big picture on how the business works, and where it overlaps with the tech industry. Linus is more transparent about his business operations with his viewers than I honestly would expect from someone in his position.
Agreed. He's had quite a bit of experience in the industry, and it's great that he's explaining it to those of us who don't have that level of experience.
@@ILoveHandles Well it was a severe oversimplification of production in a Capitalist market and financing growth. I would not use this as info for how to start a business. Linus has a tool that isn't afforded to most businesses. He has an ability to market things and get more eyes on them for absolutely free which is something your new business would not be able to do in the same manner. Someone just looking to start a business shouldn't really be looking that far in to the future of the business. You have to get the thing up and off the ground before any investors will be interested. No, if someone is wanting to start a business and simply hasn't because they don't have the knowledge. This isn't the knowledge you need. I'm not saying its bad information, but your company has to go a LONG way before you can ever dream of paying off loans with stock in your company. So not really starting a business information at all.
@@darktheories1758 While I don't deny any of what you said about his unique position for generating attention at low cost, or any of the things like trading stock being more a late term, big business matter, what I was specifically referring to was more directed at where he was talking about operational costs and production/distribution cycles, profit margins, etc, which I maintain are very relevant concerns to any business at any level.
I think that is the best way to show how good these are. If Linus, who has access to literally everything invests and buys it

The last line of the video is so true: "The only reason other companies can't do this, and Framework proved it, it's because they don't care". Smart of Linus to put it at the end of the video, but wholeheartedly support Framdwork and Linus' vision. I'm looking to buy a laptop sometime this year or next year, if Framework releases a $2.5-3k AMD laptop, I'll buy it on the day it launches ❤️
I'd say it's more about them not wanting to than not caring. They care about their profits so why sell people something they can fix and upgrade for 10 years when they can sell them a new laptop every 5 years?

because its pointless (have always been the downfall with modular gadgets)
Noone is gonna change ports over and over again and if the laptop breaks majority would buy a new laptop simply because they wants something new.
Framework laptops looks cool, but I hope that they will have "XL edition" with bigger frame, more slots and numpad.
Well, if they do well and aren't destroyed by anti repair advocates like Apple. An XL version may very well be on the horizon
And it's here now!
Guess what?
I remember the stream where Linus was trying to get approval from the audience on if he should invest in framework or not, I definitely support your decision Linus.
And after that stream i thought he would have chosen to support them in a different way. But i support his decision nevertheless, as long as this makes the RTR movement gain more traction .
@@marijnl If companies like Framework succeed in the free market, an "RTR movement" won't even be necessary anymore and repair-unfriendly companies like Apple would either keep digging their own graves or naturally adapt to the rising demand of modular mobile devices.

Therefore I both understand the wish to invest in Framework and that even with that, he'd still be excited about cool laptops from other manufacturers.
