  • The SupaBoy S is touted as a handheld Super Nintendo that can play your full sized cartridges on the go. The big question of course is how did Hyperkin manage to fit an entire Super Nintendo system inside this device along with the cartridge connector and a screen?

It's actually a hardware clone that uses custom chips. Same as SNES portion of the Retron 2, 3 and Retro-bit's equivalents. Only the Retron 5 uses emulation. People always assume these clones systems use emulation for some reason when the fact is they almost never do.

Video title lead me to believe it used the original components.

The screen aspect ratio is wrong. What a horrid device.

It actually not that badly build, clearly lacking knowledge of electronics. First it not a throw in screen like out of a back up camera like we do when modding other handheld, that just take off composite video signal. They actually design the display controller and integrated the display driver on the key controller board, instead of separate board like the last version. Has audio op-amp on that board as well. It becoming more refined. The issue with last version was they did throw in a screen out of back up camera and display controller was causing RF noise and causing buzzing in audio, they fix it on this version. One of the better clone and it not emulating It actually a clone.of the real hardware, so will play pretty most, if not all SNES carts with no issues. I wish they had this back in the day.

The sound didn’t work because the cartridge wasn’t in all the way.

FYI to those wondering: The batteries are lithium ion 18650, the naming derived from the cell's dimensions: 18mm x 650mm. They're ubiquitous in electronics like laptops, power tools, hobby models, electric bikes, etc... and puts out 3.6 volts, approx 2000 milliamps.

Disassembly shows that the wide screen can be replaced with a 4:3 aspect ratio screen, but still good console to play many retro titles, including famicom and nes with adapters, and genesis with adapters.

Dude thank you. I have not been able to find a tear down on this dang thing. The V2 and V1 of the system was grossly faulty with the D-pad. It had plastic poles reaching from the D-pad to the lower board and it wouldn't stop you from pressing all 4 directions which would cause all sorts of things from game bugs to getting stuck when moving in a circle with a shooter or a fighter. Finally they got smart, only the classic third time the charm on this one. Now ...chipped games, the old ones failed at that too mostly.

I have the Supaboy Sfc. the biggest con would be the screen is not very good, you'd think for such a small screen it would be sharp. the sound can be a bit muffled but you can just play with headphones. it feels very natural to hold it and it's a great option for snes on the go using real cartridges. you can also take it to your friends house easier than an actual snes. it plays on the tv like a clone console (because that's what it is) but it looks pretty good on a crt, I'd maybe not use that option so much because I have 4 snes already. .

I bet the PPU handles emulation-like features where this is bottom-up design as opposed to high-powered top-down designed emulators like retropie. I bet that's energy efficient too ... looks decent to me.
