I have the turquoise version of this. It is wonderful for allowing me to focus on a single game without any distractions. Great for evening game play right before bed.
I think I can' at least try to explain the reasoning behind this being kept on the market, and I honestly applaud Hyperkin and other companies like them for continuing to do this. First of all, not everyone, such as elderly people wants a modern game console that you have to have internet access to play, but just wants to enjoy their old school games they grew up playing without all the hassle and frustration of configuring a brand new device and paying hundreds of dollars to do it. Then you have people like myself, who are totally blind, but grew up at least wanting to try playing these games because all the neighborhood kids did, and so it sounded like fun, and while with some of these games I never got far with, it was fun trying, and sadly, Nintendo, unlike Microsoft's Xbox with it's Narrator feature, which speaks what is displayed on the screen as far as menus and the like, has no screen-reading ability, so consoles like these and purchasing the cartridges I want are a must if I want to continue playing them.
While I do appreciate the usb c charge port I would've liked to see some other changes to make it feel worth it to upgrade from my sfc version where they first introduced the 16:94:3 button. If they would've gone the extra mile to make the usb c into a display option than compared to the a/v then I would consider it. Also wish they would sell replacement parts for the device like a button set so you weren't stuck with the gold if you didn't want it, a new display glass for when it's all scratched up or cracked, heck if they just made a nice durable case for it they'd have more money from me. The supaboy is genuinely an amazing product for people like me that enjoy being able to play home console games on the go and use the device for testing purposes when on the hunt in the wild. If they would've kept doing the portables like they used to with both nes and genesis I'd have more hyperkin products in my home.
Loved the review, as always!! You mentioned the pallet issue. Regarding that have you tried CONTRA III ALIEN WARS, have they fixed the pallet on the top view levels?
Out of all the clone consoles out there this seems to be the closest to being a perfect replica of the original, but I wonder if it would play region locked exclusive games and modern reproductions like the ones from Retro-Bit. Still, it's really weird how the design hasn't changed a lot since the first model, a smaller version with HDMI would be just perfect.
So, I own one. I haven't tested using a RetroGen on it because I unibtebtionally sold my only Genesis game, but it is designed to play PAL ganes and I think even Japanese carts, and as a proud owner of a Gebeology and Thracia Repro, I can confirm it rubs Reprocarts. I plan on getting the Earthbound Halloween Hack too, so I'll get back to this comment when I do.
I boight a Hyper Beach with a dead battery out the gate, but the Black Gold I exchanged it for is pretty great. Has a raw edge on the top of the screen, and I can't get the wrist strap in its place but I love it alltogether.

I have the old version of this black gold edition, and I keep getting artifacts on the screen when I play my super game boy. The super Nintendo and super Famicom games don't have this problem but game boy games do. The super game boy menu doesn't have the artifacts, but the Gameboy games within it do. Do you know how long the manufacturer warranty lasts? If you were able to return yours, then I could probably still return mine.
Hey Rock Solid how you doing brother I was actually going through videos and I thought that you had done a super job of explaining and displaying the supaboy and I'm sure you heard the stories of million times of a poor kid not having much growing up but when they came to video games I grew up not knowing much about video games being a kid of ladies and'90s you know it was kind of hard in my local town so I grew up buying the games that you could purchase any grocery store being the black and white LCD games you could usually get those for five six seven eight dollars by the way my name is Cruz I wasn't introduced to Nintendo to late 1995 and then the Game Boy until 1999 when my mom actually bought me one when I bought my first Nintendo I was 10 years old of course once again mom had got it for me second hand but I was appreciative I know that I'm older the time has passed and I'm not able to get what I want you know of course after all the bills are paid you know you kind of budget yourself so you can get you a little something every time you can so I was thinking since I ran across the video and they're not a lot of videos out there by the way explaining this console so I appreciate your work in an effort to keep us informed I mean and it is true what they say if you know where to search you can find stuff because TH-cam is a great source of knowledge about everything in the world if you know what you want and what you're looking for my question is this because I do want to buy myself a Superboy but I want to know if it can be upgraded and make better as far as the battery life you know the playing time and you know just the overall longevity of the system because batteries can be upgraded to get video game systems like this more playtime better screens and my particular case I want to buy this system because I didn't have access to a lot of portable gaming back in my day so now that I can I rather enjoy it my question is can the battery and screen be upgraded because I know there was more battery life and a better screen you can get more out of your system than with regular stock options and I had also heard it mentioned in a video that I recently seen that the connector that connects the supaboy? Hey Rox , on my Supaboy-S I totally agree with you about the location of select and start buttons , , USB-C is an interesting new option, my micro USB charger has never had a problem on my Supaboy-S , , the market for this is TRUE nostalgia gamers that are starting to Hate downloading based media , tactile real cartridges ,I wonder wich channel will put a GameGenie through it's paces on the Supaboy-S ??? 👍👽👍

Perhaps you may be able to help me with this. Ive always wanted to try this device out, but since i cut meat for a living and have ginormous hands its tough for me to play handhelds. The only handhelds i can play for more than 10 mins are the original gameboy/gbc form factor and the original GBA. I cant do switch or mobile games, presumably because of the width and weight. (One being too heavy, the other too slim and light) Do you think given those examples, this would be playable for someone like me? Snes is my all time favorite console and no matter what i will one day buy a real snes but this would be a fun way to get my collection started. Also when you took it out of the box the plastic wrap made me think it was broken! I was scared for you lol i thought that screen was smashed.
The are four possible combinations of original/emulated hardware/software. I see value in three of the combinations, but have no interest in playing original software on emulated hardware. Just my opinion of course; people can play however they want.
@@RoXolid Ah. Maybe I'm thinking of their NES color palette. On some of the products the red is really dark. Way darker than the reds were ever intended to be. Nevertheless, they look really good on this product.
Seriously ? In 2024 no hdmi tv output ? composite is obsolete. And considering it has real controller ports (ideal to play on tv) i think an additional dock will be ideal.
i wish hyperkin have made a game boy advance in this form factor, cause the analogue pocket is too expensive, and the original gameboy advance has a very poor screen. i had the game boy advance sp, boy it don't feel like a joypad in your hands, especially L and R, very small and angular, painful to press and not intuitive.

How's the viewing angle on these newer model? I owned the older sfc version, and the viewing angle is not great. I end up doing a screen swap to a slightly better screen.
You can play with 8bitdo controller, I hear the controller is compatible with this console clone and to connect must to use an 8bitdo receiver for SNES.
You could, but I wouldn't recommend it. 8-bit dough does not support the retro gaming community from a customer service and engagement standpoint very well compared to other manufacturers. As such I would recommend other manufacturers controllers over there's as if you have an issue you're pretty much on your own and they ignore you
I don't think you can play niche games like Soul Blazer or Illusion of Gaia, and the ultra rare Terranigma, so it is very marketable even with the Switch.
Without a upgrade to 720p HD I can't justify a purchase of this hyperkin product. The 16bit boy by Gamerz Tek is bigger and has a 720p HD screen for the same price.
DOes anything like this exist for Sega Genesis or N64? I've seen other emulator devices that include various N64 games but for the few I have, I've never been able to get the to run in a PLAYABLE state. I don't understand how developers of these devices expect us to know which emulator and all the settings we need to set in order to run an N64 game in a playable state. No,no,no,no the Retroad 5 Plus is far superior even though it isn't USB C. The Retroad 5 Plus is a 7" HDMI out SNES Handheld that is over at Ali-Express and it also has adapters for other retro consoles like the GB/GBC Extension Converter for Gameboy/Gameboy Color. It's region free and has different aspect ratios as well. It comes with two wireless controllers but you can go wired as well. Trust me I own both and the Retroad is far superior especially with SEGA-CD support for Popful mail in English with the Everdrive MD Pro and the Retroad MD/Genesis adapter. You are really missing out. I use mine mostly with the GB/GBC Extension Converter and the Everdrive GB X7. I use my 8bitdo SNES dongle and NES/SNES Online controllers depending on what I am playing. It does have one downfall. It's a big beast that kind of gets heavy like pumping iron. Best playing on your chest in bed or on TV.

@@RoXolid It's a funny little game that's for any time of the year. You should look at something before you count it out. It's not horror. It's more cartoon like. I got it on PSTV as a last release. I think it was the last game for the system but it is a steal at 10$ on Switch.

Regions aren't an issue and Retro-but repros play perfectly fine as well

Still couldnt manage to put an HDMI port is baffeling to me. The fact that Gamerztek 8bit boy was able to do that i dont see why they couldnt... 🤷

Would be nice if they could do a portable genesis. I think Retro Bit is doing one that's basically a larger Nomad.
They announced a Nomad re-release in 2019 I think and still in development
I'd be able to test if Supaboy's compatible with RetroGen. . . if I hadn't sold my only Genesis game with the lot. . . I used to get the Supaboy. . .

The LCD screen viewing angle was always so bad on these. I wonder if it's improved at all.

No,no,no,no the Retroad 5 Plus is far superior even though it isn't USB C. The Retroad 5 Plus is a 7" HDMI out SNES Handheld that is over at Ali-Express and it also has adapters for other retro consoles like the GB/GBC Extension Converter for Gameboy/Gameboy Color. It's region free and has different aspect ratios as well. It comes with two wireless controllers but you can go wired as well. Trust me I own both and the Retroad is far superior especially with SEGA-CD support for Popful mail in English with the Everdrive MD Pro and the Retroad MD/Genesis adapter. You are really missing out. I use mine mostly with the GB/GBC Extension Converter and the Everdrive GB X7. I use my 8bitdo SNES dongle and NES/SNES Online controllers depending on what I am playing. It does have one downfall. It's a big beast that kind of gets heavy like pumping iron. Best playing on your chest in bed or on TV.

@@RoXolid It's a funny little game that's for any time of the year. You should look at something before you count it out. It's not horror. It's more cartoon like. I got it on PSTV as a last release. I think it was the last game for the system but it is a steal at 10$ on Switch.
