I donated to the Dreamfall Chapters Kickstarter, and one of the stretchgoals was that the developers would livestream them playing all of Dreamfall in one sitting. You can't imagine how fun it was to see their frustration at their own stealth-section and them admitting that it probably was a bad idea.XD
I don't see why a game where the main character is the 'Fastest Thing Alive' has to have a stealth section where in any normal situation, he could run right through it without getting caught, even with running right through the stealth lights. Sonic could run away when those bats show up, but NOPE! Gotta give up on life!
***** I thought the controls were slippery as fuck despite the Parkour being better than how it is in the HD version, and the forced gyroscope controls at points made it even worse. Then to have bad level design based a lot around bottomless pits and forcing you to use the Wisps to complete the stages instead of SONIC just ruined the game for me. Thank goodness the Wii U version had an update to let you use the control stick for the most part.
Personally, I thought that the forsaken fortress in windwaker was actually a nice change of pace. I'm going to make a bunch of people really hate me right now, but my least favorite part of most Zelda games is the dungeons. Zelda is my all time favorite game series, but for some reason, I just feel like dungeons are a chore. People always complain "I hate Windwaker because there are so few dungeons" but I am all to happy not to go do the same chore about 8 times. Windwaker is a unique game, because it actually feels like a story to me. What do you think Lord of the Rings would be like if they went into the mines of moria eight times? Windwaker is different than other Zelda games. Sometimes, you don't do a dungeon to get an important main quest item. Sometimes you revisit dungeons. While I will admit, the forsaken fortress isn't my favorite part of windwaker, you have to admit it feels awesome coming back to it later in the game and beating the crap out of everyone.
For me one of the most frustrating stealth sections in a game was in Octodad Dadliest Catch. Trying to be stealthy in a game where the controls are weird on purpose is not a fun time.
Yeah, but the AI in that section are hilariously oblivious, so it's not all that hard and still fits fairly well with the tone of the rest of the game, since everyone in the rest of the game is quite oblivious as well.
I highly disagree with forsaken fortress it's meant to show how much you've grown throughout the game by sending you in without a sword it just emphasizes how weak you are early on and when you come back later you kick all the ass
+Lexi “Dalexi The Great” B like I said it just show how much you grow throughout the game yes from a gameplay standpoint it should but from a thematic standpoint it works very well
Yeah, great, but it's boring as fuck. Zelda stories are never super interesting to me, I would rather just get a move on. Forsaken Fortress doesn't get a move on.
This is, IMO, your greatest countdown so far. Really outdone yourself! :D And thanks for making these, there is really nothing I'd rather end the day with than a RL countdown video.
All I remember from Indigo Prophecy is "Don't move or I'll shoot!" "Don't move or I'll shoot!" "Don't move or I'll shoot!" That was the one that stood out in my mind the most, but I did remember a semi-stealth section in Professor Layton x Ace Attorney. To be fair, it was all still a puzzle, but the premise was that you were sneaking around guards. It was both cleverly done and frustrating lol. Another one that stands out in my mind because I did it recently was the Skyward Sword stealth section, but I actually thought that was pretty fun, so... Thanks for the list!
The first time I played through the Forsaken Fortress in Wind Waker, I thought that the game was ripping off Sly Raccoon. That game came out one year before Wind Waker mind you and it has exactly the same elements: A barrel to slowly sneak around in, guards with lights that will kick your ass if you're discovered and of course small ledges against walls to get across. I pretty much pretended I was playing Sly Raccoon for the Forsaken Fortress and never minded it again for the rest of the game.
The forsaken fortress in Wind Waker is what caused my 6 year old self to get rid of the game, only to severely regret that decision and then get the game again 14 years later.
Saying it again, Top Five Methods of Flight. The remarkable features for each slot can be something like how you get it (godbird in dragon quest 8), how absurd the actual method is (township/boatship in bravely default/second), or even just how fun it is (that parachute/grapple thing in far cry 3)
Personally I've always been fine with Wind Waker's stealth section, it does cause the game to start slow, but sets up the story well, with your attempt to save your sister and defeat Gannondorf failing. Also I hope the two times that the stealth section from Metroid Zero Mission popped up weren't implying you thought it was bad, because it was great.
I just played Wind Waker for the first time recently, and after all the bad thing I hear....I didn't think it was that bad either. However, it was annoying at points, and I agree with Rabbid that the stealth is pointless if the mechanic will never show up again.
Nice video. I stopped watching your videos for a while, but coming back to this, you've definitely gotten a lot better at this. I'll definitely have to catch up on everything here.
I actually like the stealth section in wind waker, never felt it was too long, too hard or even tedious. Takes about 30 min to clearit and i find it fun. Unpopular opinion i guess..
It took me 2 hours... x_x Not because I suck at stealth, but I didn't know until about an hour in that you could use free camera with the C stick and couldn't find a searchlight.
My list is... -That one stealth section from Minish Cap where you need to avoid the guards around Hyrule Castle -That one stealth section from Ocarina of Time where you need to avoid the guards around Hyrule Castle -That one stealth section from Spirit Tracks where you need to avoid the guards around Hyrule Castle -That one stealth section from Majora's Mask where you need to avoid the Deku guards around the Deku Palace -That one stealth section from Skyward Sword where you need to avoid the Boboklin guards around the ruins on Eldin Volcano -Those four stealth sections from Skyward Sword where you need to avoid the guards of light around a new dimension created by the gods just to test if I can run fast enough to be the next icarnation of Link Hmmm... I can see a pattern there.
That one part from Ocarina of Time where you gotta save the stupid builders from the desert thieves. Seriously, why's there one for each era? And I would count the pirate base from Majora's Mask too but it is laughably trivial if you have the stone mask.
+Storm934 that wouldn't work since the experience will always vary from pure easy to as difficult as dark souls, also, engie and Medic are not meant for stealth, spy is, and even with spy, the experience is still always different, and even if you use the same strategies it will ALWAYS change, so this would not work for tf2 being on the list
Midnight Owl - Sonic Lost World. It plays in Silent Forest Act 2...which has stealth sections where Sonic has to avoid being seen by owls. Hence why it fits here.
I call bull on Forsaken Fortress... I actually had some fun with it versus the stealth section you constantly have to run through in Phantom Hourglass... that was repetitive bullshit... Anywyas, I still want to see *Top 5 Comedic Relief Characters*, not to be mistaken with Joke Characters...
+Boydon's Favorite Mouth Maybe but you still had to go through every single floor of the temple every time. At least in the Tower of Spirits in Spirit Tracks you can just do the new areas and backtracking is optional.
One thing I love about Abyss is if you mess up enough on the stealth section, you just get to kill everyone there instead. That was always my approach since I was pretty bad at it. Turning the enemies into mincemeat? Now that I can do! And I get experience for t! I got held up by the stealth section/following Pete in Days for years. Not because it was hard, but because I had a broken camera button on my regular DS Lite, I had eventually put the game away and kind of forgot I had it. Looking thru my game collection recently, I had found it again, and decided on giving that section another attempt on my 3DS. Nailed it in two tries.
You hate Wind Waker's stealth section? Oh boy... Try Four Sword Adventure's stealth section where you have 4x the chance of getting caught, there's no cover, and you need all of the links needed to go to the next screen...
Here's an idea for a top something-or-other: Top 10 fan translated games. Doesn't have to be to English either. Could be a game that was given a fan translation into Russian let's say and became well known due to the translated version. Emulators optional.
MultiBoxingKid Maybe. I hope he has, considering he knows about the Zero Escape games and Ace Attorney. I can wait for this list if it means for him to actually play the Danganronpa games and other visual novels, if I have to.
Anything involving stealth in Grand Theft Auto is worst because you're used to being trigger happy with taking out enemies, but then a stealth section slows it down. Worst offender is the Freighter approach to the Merryweather Heist in GTA V
I actually find the silent realms from skyward sword more annoying and stressful than the forsaken fortress and was one of the few big problems I had with the game.
1. The enemies are too easy to defeat, even in large numbers. 2. Sailing is boring and very time consuming. 3. the treasure charts add an extra step to getting items and usually only have heart pieces and money. 4. Triforce fishing is a tedious chore that can't be avoided. Those are the main issues I have with it even after the HD remake helped me enjoy it more with fixes and adding Hero mode to make the enemies a little more threatening.
I don't care for its art style and ya It's my least favorite of the 3D Zeldas. but to me, the forsaken fortress was one of the few parts I actually liked.
Because konami HAS to put stealth in everything they make because "muh metal gear" And since they like stealth so much they also recently made a deck called "spyral" which is a deck based on both metal gear and james bond yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/SPYRAL
As stealth is my least favorite aspect of any kind of game, I was extremely frustrated by the stealth section in 5D's. My friend ended up having to get me past it just so I could progress and get back to the story and the *actual* gameplay that the game was built for.
The Dreamfall entry gave me flashbacks. I actually loved the Longest Journey, but the combat and stealth mechanics in Dreamfall had me watch the latter half of that game as an LP. The mere sight of the catacombs made me cringe. Ten minutes later, my stomach is still turning, so-- thanks for that.
I loved the stealth/predator missions in the Arkham series. There's something so satisfying about picking off the thugs one by one, causing the remaining thugs to panic and freak out!
Actually, instead of the Forsaken Fortress from Wind Waker, I would have the Gerudo Fortress from Ocarina of Time. At least in Wind Waker, Link has the excuse of not having a sword; in OoT, Link is very far in the game with the Master Sword and a huge supply of other gear but still just puts his hands up and gives up when he gets caught...
i got windwaker HD for christmas and i was enjoying it, save for the forced stealth section, and of course the revisit, it's such a difficult level to deal with
I just experienced the worst stealth section yesterday. It's in COD: Advanced Warfare. For the entire game it's "charge forward and kill the guys, charge forward and kill the guys." Then, out of no where, I need to stealth and not kill everything I see. And right after, it goes right back to "charge and kill" without ever mentioning stealth again.
Have you ever played the Incredibles video game? If not, I encourage you to check out level 14 "Violet's Crossing". Deffinitly a fitting candidate for this list. I ever only completed this level once after endless trial and error and then never touched it ever again. As far as I'm concerned that level is far worse than the forsaken fortress in Windwaker.
Hotline Miami's Stealth segment makes perfect sense chronologically from where it is, and the visual effects and stuff come together for it to fit in with the 80s vibe. Everything that you have played up until that point did in fact happen, just not when you relived it as Jacket. You were in a Coma after another killer, who we find out is called Richter in HM2, shot you and killed your girlfriend. As you've just awoken from this Coma, you're disoriented, bleary and dizzy, hence why you can't move too fast. This also means you'd be unable to fight off the cops, doctors and guards who you have to sneak past. I wouldn't call the segment well-designed, but in terms of story it fits in just fine.
I once borrowed Wind Waker from someone and in the time I had it I never got past the Forsaken Fortress. I still don't own it now but its something I'm reminded of literally any time someone mentions Legend of Zelda.
Everquest 2: Kunark Ascension introduced a Stealth Section that's part of your main quest ..... you get imprisoned and stripped of your gear on a pirate ship, and part of that quest is to get your F-king helmet back from a separate crew member while the rest of your gear is decorated on their captain!
Really random kind of comment out of nowhere on a video over a year old, but regarding the Forsaken Fortress, I find that it's a lot better when you're aware of the fact that there are only three places that you're actually put up against getting caught that you can't avoid: the central courtyard with the searchlights when you first get there, the room at the north point of the map, and the one guard just above there who's super easy to avoid with any patience. End up in any of the others and it's faster and easier to just get caught so you can get back to the jail cell, which is on the second floor so you can avoid the rest. ...Wish I could tell 10-year-old me that.
I actually dreaded the stealth sections in Fable as well... I remember having to redo the stealth section a billion times because there wasn't any clear cover...
I actually do like the Forsaken Fortress, and you don't even have to go through the stealth sections - enemies are only on the bottom floor while you just have to go through the upper one. Kill the three bokoblins and go to Aryll, that's it. If you fall down, you're gonna have to sneak past the enemies, but only then.
The only one I have enjoyed was the one in Overlord 2. The green minions you control constantly run, so the pace doesn't seem slower. and you only hide from enemies long enough to back stab them, and they do not re-spawn when you are cought.
That 2003 Hulk video game, where the developers thought it would be an absolutely brilliant idea to put the occasional Bruce Banner stealth section IN A FUCKING HULK GAME It's even better when the justification for one stealth section is that Betty Ross is being held hostage and hulking out will alert everyone to your presence and get her killed...only to hulk out halfway through the level anyway with no consequences.
The Wind Waker stealth stage was great in my opinion. You actually HAVE to kill some of the enemies with sticks in order to stop the spotlights. It gives you a sense of accomplishment. After shutting down the four spotlights, you reach the top of the tower and get your sword back and satisfyingly kill a scarier enemy. Then, you are going out of the fortress by a giant bird from the beginning. After a long while in the game, you get to go to the forsaken fortress again. This time, however, you are fully equipped and ready to kill the enemies that you once couldn't. The forsaken fortress was a great stealth stage because of how great you feel after going the second time, being able to kill enemies. the barrel parts, well, don't be impatient...
I'm a big fan of stealth game from the get go, but I gotta say, in #7 you can start most combat with one or three stealth takedown if you don't go in gun blazing, There's even set pieces you can clear without being spotted.
i once played a Hulk game for PC, one level you were thrown in Alcatraz. wanna play as the Hulk? sorry cant do that! get caught by anything? start ALL over again. got anything to defend yourself with? nope. never played again... escaping the real Alcatraz would be easier than beating that level.
Ever play Pitfall: The Lost expedition? One of the last areas in the game is a forced stealth section. I don't remember it that well; it's been years since I played the game, but I remember being angry as a kid for having to go through it.
i found spirit tracks's stealth section both harder and more annoying due to the fact that you need to tap the screen to move, needing you to predict where the guards will go. AND LITERALLY EAFTER EVERY BOSS YOU HAVE TO GET EVEN MORE STEALTH!!!!!!!! the darkness ones are the worst
Yay! Finally, a top ten! And I entirely agree. Stealth games are cool, but having stealth sections in games that weren't built for stealth in the first place (a huge example is the first level in Ada's campaign in RE6)...definitely shows you the game developers ran out of ideas for a while. Seriously, that section was awful! It was way too easy to get caught, and once you did, the Ja'vo would absolutely mob you, making the game feel incredibly difficult even at low difficulties given that the Ja'vo had advanced and OP mutations, you had no partner, and of course...Ada's ABSOLUTELY shietty main weapon.
Top Out of Place Stealth Sections could easily be a follow up video. Sonic '06 trying to sneak into the station, and all the pointless stealth bits in Tony Hawks Underground would rank highly there. As well as those San Andreas ones
You know, I think Searchlight Sneak from Super Mario 3D World handled stealth missions very well, where the only penalty for being spotted is Cat Bullet Bills on your tail, some of which can actually be used to collect some stuff.
My argument for the Uncharted 2 one is that the game (especially on higher difficulty) actually uses a great deal of stealth. You can choose to go balls to the wall with your weapons if you want but you also choose to pick your enemies off one by one as carefully as possible so that if you do get caught you at least have to fight less of them. That and immediately after the stealth part of that segment, the dude pulls an alarm on your ass and all stealth goes out the window. So I think that tutorial level does a good job of teaching you every single aspect of the game: platforming/climbing, stealth and gunplay.
I'd argue Forsaken Fortress does teach a number of valuable skills. Sure, the barrel sneaking isn't terribly worthwhile, but something like the use of disposable weapons is. It forces you to fight with those sticks, knowledge you can also apply to other such weapons, like a Moblin's spear, which can be helpful sometimes. It also teaches the player basic dungeon navigation in a place where you don't really risk dying much, as well as some simple puzzle solving and also testing if the player understands how to swing on ropes at that point. It even rewards the player if they go out of their way to explore and find the Heart Piece (as well as some rupees, perhaps).
Hey RabbidLuigi, since you had to play through all those bad stealth sections, you should play a Good game about stealth, ghosts, and other things. It even even has bits of Metroid Prime's eerie charm from time to time. It's called Geist. It's hard, but really good. As of many innovative Nintendo titles, It's a GameCube game. I recommend it.
"No Zelda game has been built from the ground up to accommodate stealth." Oh yeah? Then what about the stealth aspects in Breath of the Wild, like the noise meter or enemies line of sight? True it's not out yet but it's coming out soon...
The sneaking section in Deadpool It's in there because Deadpool thinks "maybe Mr. Sinister will really die if we kill him stealthily", and the section resets if you: a) get spotted b) fire a weapon c) attack Sinister while any enemy is still alive d) go anywhere near an enemy and the game thinks it doesn't like you right now
Was really hopin that Chamber of Secrets would be on here.
You don't understand. You just don't understand....
The PC version is safe of that...AND IS SO MUCH BETTER *ducks*.
Because there is the save point?
I do, Josh. I do.
Never played it.
Sounds like you need to teach me.

I know. I have both versions. At least in the 3DS version, you can still escape, and I actually like Silent Forest there.
Yes it is. I prefer how the 3DS version did the level but I hated that version overall
+TARDISES I didn't think it was THAT hard. But holy shit, doing the time trial of that level can go fuck itself.

one problem with that, tf2 isn't a game with multiple "sections"

I never had that much of a problem with Forsaken Fortress. The Yiga Clan Hideout from BotW however, made me want to snap my Switch in half.
My personal disaster is...
SPOILERS.
The Yiga Clan Hideout in Breath of The Wild. I am TERRIBLE at Zelda game stealth sections.
That sound the moblins make in the forsaken fortress when they get suspicious always scares the shit out of me.
Please do Top 5 Visual Novels!
Ace attorney is number 1. No questions.
***** I'm not sure if Layton technically counts as a visual novel, though.
+Chessmaster “Majora8J” Omeyrolx™ Does he even play enough Visual Novels to make a proper list?
Danganronpa and Ace Attorney aren't VNs.
Good to see you are finally doing top ten's, personally I prefer them over top five's.
Am I the only person who hates Wind Waker for many reasons, but none of them were the art style?
pretty much
yes
I just thought there was too much water.
Am I the only one that actually really liked Windwaker's stealth mission?
6:14 Does rabbidluigi watch Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood??
For some reason, I would now love to see, at least, a Top 5 Video Game Stealth Sections in Games Not Meant for Stealth.
What about the stealth sections in YGO 5D'S World Championship.
Why would you put a stealth segment in a game about playing card games on motorcycles!?!?!?
Because konami HAS to put stealth in everything they make because "muh metal gear"
And since they like stealth so much they also recently made a deck called "spyral" which is a deck based on both metal gear and james bond
yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/SPYRAL
OMG I remember those! Stopped playing the game for a while because of them ;-;
+İsmail Kerem Kabil Once they figure out how to implement stealth in a Pachinko game, they'll be set.

Gonna restate these countdown ideas:

-Top Five/Ten Morality Mechanics in Video Games
Actually, instead of the Forsaken Fortress from Wind Waker, I would have the Gerudo Fortress from Ocarina of Time. At least in Wind Waker, Link has the excuse of not having a sword; in OoT, Link is very far in the game with the Master Sword and a huge supply of other gear but still just puts his hands up and gives up when he gets caught...
When I was little Forsaken Fortress made me scared of Moblins for sevral years.
i got windwaker HD for christmas and i was enjoying it, save for the forced stealth section, and of course the revisit, it's such a difficult level to deal with
I can see your production values are going up.Nice
A stealth mission in a game called ''The Getaway Black Monday'' almost drove me insane.
I love your videos. You deserve so many more views and followers my man
Have you ever played the Incredibles video game? If not, I encourage you to check out level 14 "Violet's Crossing". Deffinitly a fitting candidate for this list. I ever only completed this level once after endless trial and error and then never touched it ever again. As far as I'm concerned that level is far worse than the forsaken fortress in Windwaker.
I'd like to see a sequel to your Top 15 Wii Games countdown. Something like a Top 10/15 Wii U or 3DS Games.

Well, hello there!
I don't think we've been properly introduced.
OMG, RabbidLuigi has played Dreamfall! First time I've heard anyone in the videogame countdown community talk about that series.
Oh look you finally made a video I can watch in 4 months
Where'd you find that version of Gerudo Valley you used in your end slate? That sounded sweet!
0:47 mmmmmmm
Do I have a problem? I wait on youtube at 11:59 on sunday because I get excited.
The stealth sections in Casltevainia; Lords of Shadow 2. Oh my god, those were unneeded and terrible. Especially when trying to get past pan's brother
The only one I have enjoyed was the one in Overlord 2. The green minions you control constantly run, so the pace doesn't seem slower. and you only hide from enemies long enough to back stab them, and they do not re-spawn when you are cought.
That 2003 Hulk video game, where the developers thought it would be an absolutely brilliant idea to put the occasional Bruce Banner stealth section IN A FUCKING HULK GAME
It's even better when the justification for one stealth section is that Betty Ross is being held hostage and hulking out will alert everyone to your presence and get her killed...only to hulk out halfway through the level anyway with no consequences.
Just watching the number 1 entry gave me motion sickness
I love the opening to the this video one of my favs from you.
I deeply connected with the thumbnail. I HATED that section of Windwaker.
Hey man, awesome stuff!!! Keep up the awesome work!!
For some reason you remind me a bit of Danger Dolan when I hear you talk. In a good way.
i once played a Hulk game for PC, one level you were thrown in Alcatraz.
wanna play as the Hulk? sorry cant do that!
get caught by anything? start ALL over again.
got anything to defend yourself with? nope.
never played again...
escaping the real Alcatraz would be easier than beating that level.
Top Ten Free Games.
We need this.
I'm so glad that Red Faction was mentioned on this list, it immediately came to mind....
Ooooh my god oh of my god you mentioned Lost Odyssey finally!
Granted in a bit negative light but you still did it!
A top ten video?! Praise PapaLuigi
What was the music playing when the countdown numbers were shown? It sounds like a Professor Layton soundtrack
"No Zelda game has been built from the ground up to accommodate stealth." Oh yeah? Then what about the stealth aspects in Breath of the Wild, like the noise meter or enemies line of sight? True it's not out yet but it's coming out soon...
The sneaking section in Deadpool
It's in there because Deadpool thinks "maybe Mr. Sinister will really die if we kill him stealthily", and the section resets if you:
a) get spotted
b) fire a weapon
c) attack Sinister while any enemy is still alive
d) go anywhere near an enemy and the game thinks it doesn't like you right now
About forsaken fortress, you don't even need to go to the bottom floor. Just turn off all the lights and it becomes the easiest thing ever.
"It looks welcoming if anything."
"The architect behind it is a masterful genius. What was his name, satan?"
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
For #2
Goddamnit, I saw the punchline of that intro coming right away and it still startled me.
