Bottom line: maybe Subaru and their BFF Toyota might know a bit more about R&D and aerodynamics than these aftermarket body panel/dresss-up part makers out there.
dont give them so much credit i work in the paint shop for stellantis all auto companies have issues that we find out about later that we then go back an address things like this are overlooked easily.
I'm supposed to walnut blast the carbon buildup in my intake valves every 20,000 miles thanks to Subaru's absolute failure to mitigate a very common problem in their GDI engines. They are not the leading edge of design and function by any means.
You could stick some of that rubber door protector stripping around the circumference of the scoop. It’s a long U-channel so ya wouldn’t need to use double sided tape. 💡
I think that the weather stripping on the stock scoop is there to prevent this issue. Whenever I see something that is OEM, even if it doesn't make sense at the time, I still try to replicate that on aftermarket parts. It wouldn't make any sense for it to be a water seal when the scoop itself freely let's water in. It's painted and clear coated. It won't rust. I think you had the right idea I will just try to add the weather stripping to my scoop but I didn't go with this one. I just got the OEM + one from another site. Haven't isntalled it yet so we will see if I can avoid scratching all together. Also, side note, the paint on this car is so ridiculously soft that I am probably just gonna wrap mine. You can look at this paint the wrong way and it scratches.
Yea it's also the OEM one airs inside the hole for the scoop whereas the aftermarket one is just physically bigger and sits on top of the hood. Any vibration was gonna cause this issue.
Amen. Mine is garaged and only driven in good weather. No rain. Foam cannon and careful gentle washing and still small swirl marks. I'm very meticulous and still this paint is so sensitive.
I can understand how some people might be upset by this, but I'm like you. Little stuff like that doesn't bother me. I drive my car, I expect it to get knicked and dings.
I am a part of the same FB group. There are also posts elsewhere about this issue. I feel like this is avoidable at the time of install. Now to be fair, this should not have to be the case, but your solution of a foam gasket is one way. an alternative option would be thin strips of 3m clear protective film. I would put it around the rim of the part and around the rim of the hood.
WHY NOT USE A THINNER 3M DOUBLE SIDED TAPE FOR THE FRONT AND SIDES AND DOUBE UP THAT SAME TAPE FOR THE BACK PORTION CLOSEST TO DRIVER ?? WHEN COMBINED WITH THE FASTENERS WOULD THIS NOT PREVENT RATTLING WHICH LEADS TO SMALL PAINT CHIPS ?
im going to put 1/4 wide 2 sided 3m tape all around on the bottom outer edge of this scoop, not the side like original when i get it and not peel the other side so i can move it in place to align the screws. This is the issue is the bulge scoop sits on the hood, not down in the hood like the original so you have to raise it.
how about laying down some painters tape to wrap the entire perimeter of the opening? that might work.. thinking about getting this scoop myself, looks awesome.
This is not a guarantee or a solution, clear bra for the hood/front, this will also help out to protect against rock chips too. I also have a 3 year ceramic coating for the rest of the car as well. This is by no means within everyone'd budget. I just feel at peace knowing the paint has some protection against the everyday environment. If you like to tailgate though this might not be the greatest protection but who can avoid tiny rocks on the highway or roads when you have 1 lane or see them coming on the highway/interstate.
Thank you for making this before I installed my scoop. Please do a follow up to see if the foam or other solutions help, I'd love to have this scoop, but not worth damaging the hood imo
I'm in the same FB group, i have the solar orange VB that got the wrong color scoop. (blue) With a lot of back and forth about the subject on the group, i think I'm going to leave mine alone; i have not checked mine. Ours is a DD...i agree on the rock chips, i have so many that IDGAF anymore 😂 as it's pretty much unavoidable because she's a DD. Besides, too much removal and installing of the included scketchy screws will murder those plastic threads in no time making things worse. Mine seems to be secured so I worry more about the cheap hardware coming loose or worse, scoop flying off while driving. I'll be checking periodically to make sure its still on there properly.
Dude, I can't believe you even got the wrong color. It was an honest mistake but was funny and irritating nonetheless. I do believe the dimples is an issue and the fact that it scratches your hood is an issue. I also believe that it is blown out of proportion when people say their hood is absolutely ruined. I did get a chance to talk to you the people over at Noble and they told me that a fix is coming.

my stock scoop bounces around quite a bit on its own. I’d imagine the increased drag and high center of mass on the bulge scoop is putting quite a bit of stress on the seating. Is this mostly a cosmetic mod since you’ve got the FMI?

It was on Facebook. Basically little dents at the spots where the screw stalks are. If you tighten it even a LITTLE bit it pulls the plastic down causing a dent to appear on the other side.
