    great topic u covered: i find braid very challenging to fish in very wavy areas compared with mono but do find them useful whenever i'm fishing in areas where theres lot of swell or in beaches where the extra thin diameter can make a differences

    Great video as always, and I know I’ll get ridiculed, but a simple ‘thank you’ when handed a baited up rod doesnt cost anything

    I used to go fishing around that area quite often, as we would go camping to that campsite almost every weekend, and its lovely to see someone enjoying the same beaches and fishing there is on offer around the NSW coastline

    Roger l use braid But with a mono 1 meter leader it works a treat. Thanks for your input on both👍

    As someone who only got into beach fishing 1.5yrs ago, I was unsure what I wanted to use : braid vs mono. I had reels set up with both.
    It became evident very quickly that mono had more disadvantages. The only advantages it has are negated if you use a shock leader of 1-2 rod lengths of fluoro or mono before the swivel/trace.
    If you can't tie an FG knot, then learn the improved slim beauty or a similar knot.
    Braid allows for lighter overall setups, with more line capacity on smaller/lighter reels. It also helps anglers new to beach fishing as the sensitivity helps discern bite vs wave action easier.
    The part about cutting your fingers on braid....if you have a shock leader, you are holding fluoro or mono when you cast, and I hold the line (braid) with my finger too to help detect bites....have never forgotten to take my finger off when hooking a fish and fighting it. That part I just found odd tbh.
    I think Roger is a great fisho, great teacher generally, and a top youtuber....but I feel his braid vs mono arguments are skewed. It's one thing to have a preference and state why, but at least explain the pros of braid properly- orherwise its not a true comparison.

    • @RogerOsborneFishing
      @RogerOsborneFishing  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks Biggies, I appreciate your comments. It is quite a big subject and there are many aspects to both mono and braid. Line capacity and castability for braid are big factors.

    • @biggiesmalls4873
      @biggiesmalls4873 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yep, many factors to weigh up when choosing one over the other.
      One point in favour of mono that you mentioned, and that others often don't, is that mono puts less stress on gear (reels in particular), so I was glad you mentioned that.
      I watched an equivalent vid on braid vs mono with Starlo. Similar vid from the opposite perspective to yours. He recommends setting drags a bit lighter with braid, and combined with 1-2 rod lengths shock leader , a lot of that issue was negated.
      I still feel that mono wins out slightly in this area.
      I think my main points re braid are the lightness , sensitivity and the learning curve seems less with braid too....which is something that might be worth exploring on your channel. You really encourage and inspire new anglers and teach basics on youtube and via your website. Might be worth experimenting with novice anglers.
      Or, even better- another youtube collab between yourself and starlo. Mono vs braid. Have each argue the reasons why they choose one over the other. Then swap outfits and have a comparison from both of you.
      Just a thought, but I'm sure plenty of people would be keen to see it.
      Cheers.

      @@biggiesmalls4873 Roger seems to be catching a lot of fish from the beach and rocks without using braid, fancy lures or a lot of products that are being pushed agressively by big companies. Plus I got tired of wind knots on my expensive braids and fluoro leaders. So Ive converted to mono. When I went to Fiji recently, with my fancy light rod, braid, fluoro leader and latest greatest lures. I was out fished by local grandma with mono tied to her finger 3 to 1. Go figure :)

    • @rickyp4008
      @rickyp4008 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @slash502 I recently moved from Vic to WA, almost everyone here uses braid. I've used mono since I was a little kid and thought I'd give braid a go. First mistake I made was spooling my reel like I would with mono, little did I know that braid needs something to create traction first (tape or mono first) 😂. Needless to say, I will give it a crack, but after years of using mono, my preference will likely always be mono over braid.

    • @slash502
      @slash502 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@rickyp4008 mine is spooled correctly, still wind knots are annoying. Especially when I go fishing with family, I spend all day fixing their lines. What I am against is the pushing of more expensive and newer gear by companies and other influencers. Constantly try to make us spend more. Roger markets his service and training too of course, but I like his down to earth attitude of catching plenty with just regular gear. I never see him trying to push a new lure or a new rod etc. Anyone can try to sell and make a living, but disguising misinformatiion in "entertainment" to manipulate the consumer is getting out of hand when everyone of us has a device to watch youtube, instagram and tiktok etc.

    Another interesting video, and man Jett is a gun! So great that you took him along and assisted him in ways that encouraged him along. He’ll remember it.
    I do more boat fishing than beach fishing but do love getting to the beach when I can to wet a line - great way to engage with the elements of nature.
    The Braid Vs Mono conversation is a good one to throw up. Some comments here already dissecting it and giving food for thought. Some fishing habits we learn over many years keeps us aligned to certain equipment/rigs/knots/hook choices etc etc. All good I say and I’m glad to be watching an honest appraisal of how you find braid vs mono. I also enjoy listening to others opinions that differ on the subject. The small amount of beach fishing I have done has been with braid and long leader. I also put my finger on the line but it’s more to the side than ‘under’ the braid so when I strike my finger is no longer on the line. Just what I’ve learnt. Love your videos and you showing everyone what you’ve learnt - that works for you.

    Only time I don't use braid down the beach if weeds around roger. Using braid is about getting your drag setting right. I even use it when trolling lures behind the boat getting better hook up than mono but if drifting baits I use mono. Your vids are tremendous in sharing tips.

    Thanks for the braid and mono comparisons.
    On the beach fishing the bottom if I need cast or avoid current drift I like circle hooks, stops me from taking the bait from the fish because too often I strike like mono.
    A glove is a must, a long Fluor carbon leader and I hate braid and weed.

    I prefer mono for bait fishing , mono for surface and subsurface lures plastics and mid & deep divers I prefer braid for bream and flathead & whiting I like mono becuase it’s way cheaper and I don’t get wind knots fishing with braid on light lures can be a pain if you haven’t got the wind behind you yea I’m talking about land based fishing not kayak or boats
